Nuclear power is a high-quality clean energy source, but nuclear waste is generated during operation. The waste continuously releases heat during disposal, increasing the adjoining rock temperature and affecting the safety of the disposal site. Basalt is widely considered a commonly used rock type in the repository. This study of basalt's mechanical characteristics and damage evolution after thermal damage, with its far-reaching engineering value, was conducted by combining experimental work and theory. Uniaxial compression tests were conducted on basalt exposed to 25 °C, 500 °C, 700 °C, 900 °C, and 1100 °C conditions, and acoustic emission (AE) equipment was utilized to observe the acoustic emission phenomenon during deformation. This study was carried out to examine the mechanical characteristics, the sound emission features, the progression of damage laws, and the stress–strain framework of basalt after exposure to different types of thermal harm. As the temperature rises, the rock's maximum strength declines steadily, the peak strain rises in tandem, the rock sample's ductility is augmented, the failure mode changes from shear to tensile failure, and cracks in the failure area are observed. At room temperature, the acoustic emission signal is more vigorous than in the initial stage of rock sample loading due to thermal damage; however, after the linear elastic stage is entered, its activity is lessened. In cases where the rock approaches collapse, there is a significant surge in acoustic emission activity, leading to the peak frequency of acoustic emission ringing. The cumulative ring count of acoustic emission serves as the basis for the definition of the damage variable. At room temperature, the damage evolution of rock samples can be broken down into four distinct stages. This defined damage variable is more reflective of the entire failure process. After exposure to high temperatures, the initial damage of the rock sample becomes more extensive, and the damage variable tends to be stable with strain evolution. The stress–strain constitutive model of basalt deformation is derived based on the crack axial strain law and acoustic emission parameters. Featured Application: A fiducial marker reader system, featuring a novel marker design, has been proposed to guide mobile robots in accomplishing high-precision docking missions within smart factories. The implementation of this technology can provide a cost-effective and readily deployable sensor solution for automated docking in various scenarios. Accurately docking mobile robots to various workstations on the factory floor is a common and essential task. The existing docking methods face three major challenges: intricate deployment procedures, susceptibility to ambient lighting, and incapacity to recognize product information during the docking process. This paper devises a novel approach that combines the features of ArUco and Data Matrix to form a composite marker termed "DataMatrix-ArUco-Hybrid" (DAH). The DAH pattern serves as a fiducial marker capable of concurrently providing both target pose information and product information. Detection of the DAH pattern is conducted by a cost-effective fiducial marker reader system, called "FiMa-Reader", which comprises an embedded processing unit and an infrared camera equipped with a 940 nm fill-light to overcome lighting issues. The FiMa-Reader system effectively detects the DAH pattern under both well-lit and dimly lit conditions. Additionally, the implementation of the FiMa-Reader system leads to significant improvements in positioning accuracy, including an 86.42% improvement on the x-axis, a 44.7% improvement on the y-axis, and an 84.21% improvement in angular orientation when compared to traditional navigation methods. The utilization of FiMa-Reader presents an economically viable system capable of guiding mobile robots' positioning with high precision in various indoor lighting conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sulfide minerals (mainly FeS2) contained in lead-zinc tailings are easy to be acidified in the air. The acidification mechanism is that the tailing sand generates sulfuric acid and sulfate under the catalysis of oxidant, water and oxygen. The acidic liquid generated by the reaction will continue to react with metal oxides to form an insoluble precipitate.In order to reveal the corresponding changes of chemical properties and physical properties of lead-zinc tailing sand during acidification, a series of reaction processes of tailings under natural conditions were simulated by immersion test in laboratory.It is found through the test that with the deepening of acidification, the coarse particles of tailing sand dissolve, resulting in the decrease of iron concentration in the compound, the increase of fine particles, the increase of specific surface area, the decrease of surface friction and occlusion friction between particles, resulting in the decrease of internal friction angle, and the decrease of the safety of tailings dam. words.

Objective: The injury of the annular ligament can change the stress distribution and affect the stability of the elbow joint, but its biomechanical mechanism is unclear. The present study investigated the biomechanical effects of different flexion angles of the annular ligament on elbow joint stability. Methods: A cartilage and ligament model was constructed using SolidWorks software according to the magnetic resonance imaging results to simulate the annular ligament during normal, loosened, and ruptured conditions at different buckling angles (0°, 30°, 60°, 90°, and 120°). The fixed muscle strengths were 40 N (F1), 20 N (F2), 20 N (F3), 20 N (F4), and 20 N (F5) for the triceps, biceps, and brachial tendons and the base of the medial collateral ligament and lateral collateral ligament. The different elbow three‐dimensional (3D) finite element models were imported into ABAQUS software to calculate and analyze the load, contact area, contact stress, and stress of the medial collateral ligament of the olecranon cartilage. Results: The results showed that the stress value of olecranon cartilage increased under different conditions (normal, loosened, and ruptured annular ligament) with elbow extension, and the maximum stress value of olecranon cartilage was 2.91 ± 0.24 MPa when the annular ligament was ruptured. The maximum contact area of olecranon cartilage was 254 mm2 with normal annular ligament when the elbow joint was flexed to 30°, while the maximum contact area of loosened and ruptured annular ligament was 283 and 312 mm2 at 60° of elbow flexion, and then decreased gradually. The maximum stress of the medial collateral ligament was 6.52 ± 0.23, 11.51 ± 0.78, and 18.74 ± 0.94 MPa under the different conditions, respectively. Conclusion: When the annular ligament ruptures, it should be reconstructed as much as possible to avoid the elevation of stress on the surface of the medial collateral ligament of the elbow and the annular cartilage, which may cause clinical symptoms. Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is primarily a respiratory disease that has become a global pandemic. Close contact plays an important role in infection spread, while fomite may also be a possible transmission route. Research during the COVID-19 pandemic has identified long-range airborne transmission as one of the important transmission routes although lack solid evidence.Methods: We examined video data related to a restaurant associated COVID-19 outbreak in Guangzhou. We observed more than 40,000 surface touches and 13,000 episodes of close contacts in the restaurant during the entire lunch duration. These data allowed us to analyse infection risk via both the fomite and close contact routes.Results: There is no significant correlation between the infection risk via both fomite and close contact routes among those who were not family members of the index case. We can thus rule out virus transmission via fomite contact and interpersonal close contact routes in the Guangzhou restaurant outbreak. The absence of a fomite route agrees with the COVID-19 literature.Conclusions: These results provide indirect evidence for the long-range airborne route dominating SARS-CoV-2 transmission in the restaurant. In this paper, we develop a lower bound for the double slice genus of a knot using Casson-Gordon invariants. As an application, we show that the double slice genus can be arbitrarily larger than twice the slice genus. Fox conjectured the Alexander polynomial of an alternating knot is trapezoidal, i.e. the absolute values of the coefficients first increase, then stabilize and finally decrease in a symmetric way. Recently, Hirasawa and Murasugi further conjectured a relation between the number of the stable coefficients in the Alexander polynomial and the signature invariant. Close contact was first identified as the primary route of transmission for most respiratory infections in the early 20th century. In this review, we synthesize the existing understanding of the mechanisms of close contact transmission. We focus on two issues: the mechanism of transmission in close contact, namely the transmission of the expired particles between two people, and the physical parameters of close contact that affect the exposure of particles from one individual to another, or how the nature of close contact plays a role in transmission. We propose the existence of three sub‐routes of transmission: short‐range airborne, large droplets, and immediate body‐surface contact. We also distinguish a "body contact," which is defined with an interpersonal distance of zero, from a close contact. We demonstrate herein that the short‐range airborne sub‐route may be most common. The timescales over which data should be collected to assess the transmission risk during close contact events are much shorter than those required for the distant airborne or fomite routes. The current paucity of high‐resolution data over short distances and timescales makes it very difficult to assess the risk of infection in these circumstances. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most common primary malignant tumor of the bone in young adolescents and children. We explored the underlying mechanism of Aurora-B in promoting OS cell proliferation and metastasis. Patient and Methods: Bioinformatics was employed to predict the substrate of Aurora-B. IHC and Western blot were used to confirm the correlation between Aurora-B and NPM1. ERK/NF-κβ pathway-related proteins were detected by Western blot and immunofluorescence (IF). CCK8, wound healing, transwell, and Tunel assays were used to identify the cell proliferation, migration and apoptosis potential. Spontaneous metastasis xenografts were established to confirm the role of Aurora-B and NPM1. Results: Aurora-B promotes NPM1 phosphorylation on Ser125. The phosphorylation of NPM1Ser125 induced by Aurora-B activates the ERK/NF-κβ signaling. Further study revealed that Aurora-B promotes proliferation, migration and inhibits apoptosis via phosphorylating NPM1 in vitro and in vivo. Conclusion: Aurora-B promotes OS malignancy via phosphorylating NPM1Ser125 and activating ERK/NF-κβ signaling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) is emerging as a critical regulator in multiple cancers. Recently, lncRNA PCAT-1 was found to be up-regulated in prostate cancer and hepatocellular carcinoma, exerting oncogenic effects. However, the biological function and regulatory mechanism of PCAT-1 remain unclear in osteosarcoma (OS). In this study, we reported that PCAT-1 expression was also upregulated in OS tissues, and its overexpression was remarkably associated with tumor size, Enneking stage, tumor node metastasis (TNM) stage and metastasis in patients with OS. Knockdown of PCAT-1 suppressed OS cells proliferation, migration and invasion in vitro , and inhibited the tumorigenicity of OS cells in vivo . Mechanistic investigations revealed that PCAT-1 could interact with EZH2, thereby repressing p21 expression. Additionally, rescue experiments indicated that PCAT-1 functioned as an oncogene partly via suppressing p21 in OS cells. Collectively, our findings demonstrate that PCAT-1 is a new candidate for use in OS diagnosis, prognosis and therapy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Algal bloom has been regarded as one of the key causes for the summer hypoxia phenomena in the bottom water adjacent to the Yangtze River estuary in the East China Sea. Although a series of biological processes within microbial loop are involved in the development of oxygen depletion during the bloom decay, little has been known about the dynamics of microorganisms in response to the decaying process of the bloom through trophic interaction context. Here, we report some preliminary results of our observations about the response of microbial loop to the bloom decay, based on the onboard incubation experiments for 10 days during a diatom bloom near the Yangtze River estuary in August, 2011. Light and dark incubations were conducted to simulate the bloom decay inside and below the euphotic layer, respectively. In the first stage of bloom decay (Day 0 to Day 4), rapid response was found in heterotrophic bacteria (HB) and ciliate growth, which was in accordance with the decrease of total Chl a , indicating a “bottom-up” control at the early stage of bloom decay. However, the increase of heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF) abundance was rather inconspicuous, suggesting predation pressure on HNF from ciliate or other predator at this stage. In the second stage (Day 4 to Day 8), HB and ciliate decreased rapidly with the increase of HNF, revealing the release of HNF form ciliate predation, which suggested a “top-down” control. In the last stage of our experiment (Day 8 to Day 10), the trophic interactions were more complex, but it also implied a “top-down” control within the microbial loop. Meanwhile, virus had been monitored in the whole process of our incubations. It was found that virus lysed microalgae at the first stage, and lysed HB at the second stage. In addition, the bacterial mortality was principally caused by HNF grazing in the light-sufficient incubations and by viral lysis in the light-insufficient incubations. Our results suggest tight trophic interactions within the microbial loop in the decaying process of the algal bloom, which may assist our understanding of the role of microbial loop in hypoxia formation in coastal waters. Poor housing conditions are known to be associated with infectious diseases such as high Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) incidences. Transmission causes of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in poor housing conditions can be complex. An understanding of the exact mechanism of transmission can help to pinpoint contributing environmental issues. Here, we investigated a Hong Kong COVID-19 outbreak in early 2021 in four traditional Tong Lau houses with subdivided units. There are more than 80 subdivided units of less than 20 m 2 floor area each on average. With a total of 34 confirmed COVID-19 cases, the outbreak had an attack rate of 25.4%, being one of the highest attack rates observed in Hong Kong, and ranked among the highest attack rates in reported outbreaks internationally. Tracer gas leakage and decay measurements were performed in the drainage system and in the subdivided units to determine the transport of infectious aerosols by the owner-modified sophisticated wastewater drainage pipe networks and the poor ventilation conditions in some subdivided units. The results show that the outbreak was probably due to multiple transmission routes, i.e. by the drainage pipe spread of stack aerosols, which is enhanced by poor ventilation in the subdivided units., (© 2022 The Authors.)

The deposit of noble metal on titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been considered as an effective strategy to improve the activity of TiO2. In this study, TiO2 nanoparticles were prepared using a sol-gel route followed by heat treatment at elevated temperatures (573 K, 773 K, and 973 K). TiO2-Pt catalyst (1 wt%) was prepared by depositing Pt on the surface of the prepared TiO2 nanoparticles. TiO2 and TiO2-Pt were used as heterogeneous catalysts to remove humic acid with UV-light (120 W) illumination. TiO2 prepared at low temperature with smaller particle size and larger specific surface area had stronger activity on humic acid degradation. Deposit of Pt would favor separation of photogenerated charges and enhance the photocatalyst activity, but its coating of the active site also inhibited degradation of humic acid. The addition of H202 enhanced degradation of humic acid for more active oxygen produced. Low pH (pH = 4) was helpful to adsorb humic acid on the surface of TiO2 and, correspondingly, enhance degradation of humic acid (44.4%).

The chitosan scaffolds with different deacetylated degree were prepared in this study. The morphology of scaffolds were observed using SEM, and the porosity, the water absorbing swelling ratio and the degradation were examined both in vitro and in vitro. The results showed that the chitosan scaffolds with different deacetylated degree exhibited three-dimensional structure with high porosity. With increasing of deacetylated degree, their porosities were 93.46%, 90.02% and 86.71%, respectively. The swelling ratios of chitosan scaffolds were 820%, 803% and 772%, respectively. At the fourth week, the degradation rates were 30.44%, 22.08% and 17.10% in vitro, respectively; while the corresponding rates were 57.48%, 40.23%, 29.53% in vivo respectively. The degradation rate of chitosan scaffold was negatively correlated to deacetylated degree. Furthermore, it showed that the speed of degradation in vivo was faster than that in vitro. We concluded that controlling the deacetylated degree of chitosan can provide a well-matched degradable scaffold material for the reparation of cartilage defects.
