It is shown that structural disorder-in the form of anisotropic, picoscale atomic displacements-modulates the refractive index tensor and results in the giant optical anisotropy observed in BaTiS3, a quasi-1D hexagonal chalcogenide. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies reveal the presence of antipolar displacements of Ti atoms within adjacent TiS6 chains along the c-axis, and threefold degenerate Ti displacements in the a-b plane. 47/49Ti solid-state NMR provides additional evidence for those Ti displacements in the form of a three-horned NMR lineshape resulting from a low symmetry local environment around Ti atoms. Scanning transmission electron microscopy is used to directly observe the globally disordered Ti a-b plane displacements and find them to be ordered locally over a few unit cells. First-principles calculations show that the Ti a-b plane displacements selectively reduce the refractive index along the ab-plane, while having minimal impact on the refractive index along the chain direction, thus resulting in a giant enhancement in the optical anisotropy. By showing a strong connection between structural disorder with picoscale displacements and the optical response in BaTiS3, this study opens a pathway for designing optical materials with high refractive index and functionalities such as large optical anisotropy and nonlinearity.

Supported noble metal catalysts, ubiquitous in chemical technology, often undergo dynamic transformations between reduced and oxidized states-which influence the metal nuclearities, oxidation states, and catalytic properties. In this investigation, we report the results of in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy, and other physical characterization techniques, bolstered by density functional theory, to elucidate the structural transformations of a set of MgO-supported palladium catalysts under oxidative treatment conditions. As the calcination temperature increased, the as-synthesized supported metallic palladium nanoparticles underwent oxidation to form palladium oxides (at approximately 400 °C), which, at approximately 500 °C, were oxidatively fragmented to form mixtures of atomically dispersed palladium cations. The data indicate two distinct types of atomically dispersed species: palladium cations located at MgO steps and those embedded in the first subsurface layer of MgO. The former exhibit significantly higher (>500 times) catalytic activity for ethylene hydrogenation than the latter. The results pave the way for designing highly active and stable supported palladium hydrogenation catalysts with optimized metal utilization.

Porous carbons are the active materials of choice for supercapacitor applications because of their power capability, long-term cycle stability, and wide operating temperatures. However, the development of carbon active materials with improved physicochemical and electrochemical properties is generally carried out via time-consuming and cost-ineffective experimental processes. In this regard, machine-learning technology provides a data-driven approach to examine previously reported research works to find the critical features for developing ideal carbon materials for supercapacitors. Here, we report the design of a machine-learning-derived activation strategy that uses sodium amide and cross-linked polymer precursors to synthesize highly porous carbons (i.e., with specific surface areas > 4000 m2/g). Tuning the pore size and oxygen content of the carbonaceous materials, we report a highly porous carbon-base electrode with 0.7 mg/cm2 of electrode mass loading that exhibits a high specific capacitance of 610 F/g in 1 M H2SO4. This result approaches the specific capacitance of a porous carbon electrode predicted by the machine learning approach. We also investigate the charge storage mechanism and electrolyte transport properties via step potential electrochemical spectroscopy and quasielastic neutron scattering measurements.

Atomically dispersed metals on metal oxide supports are a rapidly growing class of catalysts. Developing an understanding of where and how the metals are bonded to the supports is challenging because support surfaces are heterogeneous, and most reports lack a detailed consideration of these points. Herein, we report two atomically dispersed CO oxidation catalysts having markedly different metal-support interactions: platinum in the first layer of crystalline MgO powder and platinum in the second layer of this support. Structural models have been determined on the basis of data and computations, including those determined by extended X-ray absorption fine structure and X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopies, infrared spectroscopy of adsorbed CO, and scanning transmission electron microscopy. The data demonstrate the transformation of surface to subsurface platinum as the temperature of sample calcination increased. Catalyst performance data demonstrate the lower activity but greater stability of the subsurface platinum than of the surface platinum.

Nanoscale multi-principal element intermetallics (MPEIs) may provide a broad and tunable compositional space of active, high-surface area materials with potential applications such as catalysis and magnetics. However, MPEI nanoparticles are challenging to fabricate because of the tendency of the particles to grow/agglomerate or phase-separated during annealing. Here, we demonstrate a disorder-to-order phase transition approach that enables the synthesis of ultrasmall (4 to 5 nm) and stable MPEI nanoparticles (up to eight elements). We apply just 5 min of Joule heating to promote the phase transition of the nanoparticles into L10 intermetallic structure, which is then preserved by rapidly cooling. This disorder-to-order transition results in phase-stable nanoscale MPEIs with compositions (e.g., PtPdAuFeCoNiCuSn), which have not been previously attained by traditional synthetic methods. This synthesis strategy offers a new paradigm for developing previously unexplored MPEI nanoparticles by accessing a nanoscale-size regime and novel compositions with potentially broad applications.

The ability to alloy different elements is critical for property tuning and materials discovery. However, general alloying at the nanoscale remains extremely challenging due to strong immiscibility and easy oxidation, particularly for early transition metals that are highly reactive. Here, we report nanoscale alloying using a high-temperature- and high-entropy-based strategy (T∗ΔSmix) to significantly expand the possible alloys and include early transition metals. While high-temperature synthesis favors alloy formation and metal reduction, the high-entropy compositional design is critical to further extending the alloying to strongly repelling combinations (e.g., Au-W) and easily oxidized elements (e.g., Zr). In particular, we explicitly characterized a record 15-element nanoalloy, which showed a solid-solution structure featuring localized strain and lattice distortions as a result of extreme mixing. Our study significantly broadens available compositions of nanoalloys and provides clear guidelines by utilizing the less-explored entropic chemistry.

Despite the large number of reports on colloidal nanocrystals, very little is known about the mechanistic details in terms of nucleation and growth at the atomistic level. Taking bimetallic core-shell nanocrystals as an example, here we integrate in situ liquid-cell transmission electron microscopy with first-principles calculations to shed light on the atomistic details involved in the nucleation and growth of Pt on Pd cubic seeds. We elucidate the roles played by key synthesis parameters, including capping agent and precursor concentration, in controlling the nucleation site, diffusion path, and growth pattern of the Pt atoms. When the faces of a cubic seed are capped by Br-, Pt atoms preferentially nucleate from corners and then diffuse to edges and faces for the creation of a uniform shell. The diffusion does not occur until the Pt deposited at the corner has reached a threshold thickness. At a high concentration of the precursor, self-nucleation takes place and the Pt clusters then randomly attach to the surface of a seed for the formation of a non-uniform shell. These atomistic insights offer a general guideline for the rational synthesis of nanocrystals with diverse compositions, structures, shapes, and related properties.

Here we show that compressive sensing allows 4‐dimensional (4‐D) STEM data to be obtained and accurately reconstructed with both high‐speed and reduced electron fluence. The methodology needed to achieve these results compared to conventional 4‐D approaches requires only that a random subset of probe locations is acquired from the typical regular scanning grid, which immediately generates both higher speed and the lower fluence experimentally. We also consider downsampling of the detector, showing that oversampling is inherent within convergent beam electron diffraction (CBED) patterns and that detector downsampling does not reduce precision but allows faster experimental data acquisition. Analysis of an experimental atomic resolution yttrium silicide dataset shows that it is possible to recover over 25 dB peak signal‐to‐noise ratio in the recovered phase using 0.3% of the total data. Lay abstract: Four‐dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy (4‐D STEM) is a powerful technique for characterizing complex nanoscale structures. In this method, a convergent beam electron diffraction pattern (CBED) is acquired at each probe location during the scan of the sample. This means that a 2‐dimensional signal is acquired at each 2‐D probe location, equating to a 4‐D dataset. Despite the recent development of fast direct electron detectors, some capable of 100kHz frame rates, the limiting factor for 4‐D STEM is acquisition times in the majority of cases, where cameras will typically operate on the order of 2kHz. This means that a raster scan containing 256^2 probe locations can take on the order of 30s, approximately 100‐1000 times longer than a conventional STEM imaging technique using monolithic radial detectors. As a result, 4‐D STEM acquisitions can be subject to adverse effects such as drift, beam damage, and sample contamination. Recent advances in computational imaging techniques for STEM have allowed for faster acquisition speeds by way of acquiring only a random subset of probe locations from the field of view. By doing this, the acquisition time is significantly reduced, in some cases by a factor of 10‐100 times. The acquired data is then processed to fill‐in or inpaint the missing data, taking advantage of the inherently low‐complex signals which can be linearly combined to recover the information. In this work, similar methods are demonstrated for the acquisition of 4‐D STEM data, where only a random subset of CBED patterns are acquired over the raster scan. We simulate the compressive sensing acquisition method for 4‐D STEM and present our findings for a variety of analysis techniques such as ptychography and differential phase contrast. Our results show that acquisition times can be significantly reduced on the order of 100‐300 times, therefore improving existing frame rates, as well as further reducing the electron fluence beyond just using a faster camera. The effects of N-doping and the lithiation mechanism of TiO2 nanotubes were elucidated by integrated in situ microscopy and electrochemical measurements.

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) commercially dominate portable energy storage and have been extended to hybrid/electric vehicles by utilizing electrode materials with enhanced energy density. However, the energy density and cycling life of LIBs must extend beyond the current reach of commercial electrodes to meet the performance requirements for transportation applications. Carbon-based anodes, serving as the main negative electrodes in LIBs, have an intrinsic capacity limitation due to the intercalation mechanism. Some nanostructured carbon materials offer very interesting reversible capacities and can be considered as future anode materials. However, their fabrication processes are often complicated and expensive. Theoretically, using a lithium metal anode is the best way of delivering high energy density due to its largest theoretical capacity of more than 3800 mAh g-1; however, lithium metal is highly reactive with liquid electrolytes. Alternative anodes are being explored, including other lithium-reactive metals, such as Si, Ge, Zn, V, and so forth. These metals react reversibly with a large amount of Li per formula unit to form lithium-metal alloys, rendering these materials promising candidates for next-generation LIBs with high energy density. Though, most of these pure metallic anodes experience large volume changes during lithiation and delithiation processes that often results in cracking of the anode material and a loss electrical contact between the particles. Nanosized metal sulfides were recently found to possess better cycling stability and larger reversible capacities over pure metals. Further improvements and developments of metal sulfide-based anodes rely on a fundamental understanding of their electrochemical cycling mechanisms. Not only must the specific electrochemical reactions be correctly identified, but also the microstructural evolution upon electrochemical cycling, which often dictates the cyclability and stability of nanomaterials in batteries, must be clearly understood. Probing these dynamic evolution processes, i.e. the lithiation reactions and morphology evolutions, are often challenging. It requires both high-resolution chemical analysis and microstructural identification. In situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) coupled with electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) has recently been raised as one of the most powerful techniques for monitoring electrochemical processes in anode materials for LIBs. In this work, we focus on elucidating the origin of the structural stability of SnS2 during electrochemical cycling by revealing the microstructural evolution of SnS2 upon lithiation using in situ TEM. Crystalline SnS2 was observed to undergo a two-step reaction after the initial lithium intercalation: (1) irreversible formation of metallic tin and amorphous lithium sulfide and (2) reversible transformation of metallic tin to Li-Sn alloys, which is determined to be the rate-determining step. More interestingly, it was discovered that a self-assembled composite framework formed during the irreversible conversion reaction, which has not been previously reported. Crystalline Sn nanoparticles are well arranged within an amorphous Li2S "matrix" in this self-assembled framework. This nanoscale framework confines the locations of individual Sn nanoparticles and prevents particle agglomeration during the subsequent cycling processes, therefore providing desired structural tolerance and warranting a sufficientelectron pathway. Our results not only explain the outstanding cycling stability of SnS2 over metallic tin anodes, but also provide important mechanistic insights into the design of high-performance electrodes for next-generation LIBs through the integration of a unique nanoframework.

The effects of N-doping and the lithiation mechanism of TiO2 nanotubes were elucidated by integrated in situ microscopy and electrochemical measurements.

Recent calculations and experimental data suggest that understanding the local ordering behavior of Ni/Mn will be critical to optimize the electrochemical properties of LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO) high voltage spinel. In this study, we systematically controlled the evolution of Ni and Mn ordering in LNMO samples by annealing them at 700 °C in air for different dwelling times, followed by quenching to room temperature. The long- and short-range ordering behavior of Ni and Mn were analyzed by combining neutron powder diffraction, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) data. The results show that the fraction of ordered phase increases rapidly during initial annealing at 700 °C for 6 h, and accompanied by decreasing amounts of secondary phases. Annealing longer than 6 h led to the growth in size of ordered domains (i.e., increased segregation of ordered and disordered domains) along with a slow increase in the fraction of ordered phase. The dependence of open circuit voltages (OCVs) of the LNMO on the degree of ordering agrees well with recent calculations using the density functional theory. The increase in the degree of ordering increases the open circuit voltage (OCV) and the initial capacity but reduces cycle life and rate capability. The LNMO delivered optimal battery performances (capacity, cycle life, and rate capability) after annealing at 700 °C for 2 h. This partially ordered sample showed the respective advantages from both disordered and ordered spinels: better spinel-phase purity (thus, higher initial capacity) from the ordered LNMO and better cycle life and rate capability from the disordered LNMO. © 2014 American Chemical Society.

A novel oxygen vacancy assisted transition metal (TM) diffusion mechanism is proposed for the first time to explain the near-surface phase transformation in lithium excess transition metal layered oxides. Oxygen vacancies and TM migration have been observed at nm scale spatial resolution by Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy and Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy. Formation of (dilute) oxygen vacancies and their roles in assisting transition metal ion diffusion were further investigated using first principles calculations. The activation barriers of TM diffusion in the presence of oxygen vacancies are drastically reduced and consistently in a reasonable range for room temperature diffusion.

Control of structure at the atomic level can precisely and effectively tune catalytic properties of materials, enabling enhancement in both activity and durability. We synthesized a highly active and durable class of electrocatalysts by exploiting the structural evolution of platinum-nickel (Pt-Ni) bimetallic nanocrystals. The starting material, crystalline PtNi3 polyhedra, transforms in solution by interior erosion into Pt3Ni nanoframes with surfaces that offer three-dimensional molecular accessibility. The edges of the Pt-rich PtNi3 polyhedra are maintained in the final Pt3Ni nanoframes. Both the interior and exterior catalytic surfaces of this open-framework structure are composed of the nanosegregated Pt-skin structure, which exhibits enhanced oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity. The Pt3Ni nanoframe catalysts achieved a factor of 36 enhancement in mass activity and a factor of 22 enhancement in specific activity, respectively, for this reaction (relative to state-of-the-art platinum-carbon catalysts) during prolonged exposure to reaction conditions.

Tuning the anionic site of catalyst supports can impact reaction pathways by creating active sites on the support or influencing metal‐support interactions when using supported metal nanoparticles. This study focuses on CO2 hydrogenation over supported Cu nanoparticles, revealing a 3‐fold increase in methanol yield when replacing oxygen anions with hydrides in the perovskite support (Cu/BaTiO2.8H0.2 yields ~146 mg/h/gCu vs. Cu/BaTiO3 yields ~50 mg/h/gCu). The contrast suggests that significant roles are played by the support hydrides in the reaction. Temperature programmed reaction and isotopic labelling studies indicate that BaTiO2.8H0.2 surface hydride species follow a Mars van Krevelen mechanism in CO2 hydrogenation, promoting methanol production. High‐pressure steady‐state isotopic transient kinetic analysis (SSITKA) studies suggest that Cu/BaTiO2.8H0.2 possesses both a higher density and more active and selective sites for methanol production compared to Cu/BaTiO3. An operando high‐pressure diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy (DRIFTS)‐SSITKA study shows that formate species are the major surface intermediates over both catalysts, and the subsequent hydrogenation steps of formate are likely rate‐limiting. However, the catalytic reactivity of Cu/BaTiO2.8H0.2 towards the formate species is much higher than Cu/BaTiO3, likely due to the altered electronic structure of interface Cu sites by the hydrides in the support as validated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Improved methods for the flux growth of single crystals of the important battery material LiFePO4 have been developed, allowing the facile preparation of single crystals up to 1 cm across with well-developed facets at relatively low temperatures. The structural characterization of these samples by both powder X-ray diffraction and single crystal diffraction (X-ray and neutron) indicates that the samples are typically stoichiometric with a very low concentration of Fe defects on the Li site, though crystals with larger concentrations of defects can be specifically grown using Fe-rich fluxes. These defects occur through the formation of a Fe-rich (Li1-2xFe x)FePO4 partial solid solution, in contrast to the antisite defects more commonly discussed in the literature which would preserve the ideal LiFePO4 stoichiometry. The LiFePO4 defects are shown to be sarcopside-like (2 Li+ → Fe2+ + vacancy) based on compositions refined from single crystal diffraction data, the observed dependence of unit cell parameters on defect concentration, and their observed phase behavior (defects only appear in growths from fluxes which are Fe-rich relative to stoichiometric LiFePO4). The distribution of defects has been studied by aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and was found to be highly inhomogenous, suggesting that defect-containing crystals may consist of endotaxial intergrowths of olivine LiFePO4 and sarcopside Fe3(PO4)2 in a manner that minimizes the detrimental influence of FeLi defects on the rate of Li-ion transport within crystallites. © 2013 American Chemical Society.

The atomic and electronic structures at interfaces in thin films are typically different from the bulk and are vitally important in determining the physical properties of thin films. The interface between SrVO3, chosen as a prototype for vanadium-based perovskite materials in this work, and LaAlO3 substrate is investigated by scanning transmission electron microscopy, electron energy-loss spectroscopy, and theoretical multi-electron calculations. Extra electrons have been detected on the interface layer by comparing the energy-loss near-edge structures of V-L3,2 edges to those from the film far from the interface. Monochromated EELS and theoretical calculations for SrVO3, VO2, and V2O 3 support this conclusion. The extra electrons appear to originate from a change in the local bonding configuration of V at the La-O terminated substrate surface as determined by Z-contrast imaging. © 2011 American Institute of Physics.

Using a combination of vertical transport measurements across and lateraltransport measurements along the LaAlO$_{3}$/SrTiO$_{3}$ heterointerface, wedemonstrate that significant potential barrier lowering and band bending arethe cause of interfacial metallicity. Barrier lowering and enhanced bandbending extends over 2.5 nm into LaAlO$_{3}$ as well as SrTiO$_{3}$. We explainorigins of high-temperature carrier saturation, lower carrier concentration,and higher mobility in the sample with the thinnest LaAlO$_{3}$ film on aSrTiO$_{3}$ substrate. Lateral transport results suggest that parasiticinterface scattering centers limit the low-temperature lateral electronmobility of the metallic channel.
