Late epic poetry did not find its inspiration only in fancy: it drew from contemporary historic facts in an allusive way and reflected the social life of its time. The examples of Theseus de Cologne and of The Crowning of Louis highlight the fertility of exchanges between history and literature, but also the difficulty in detecting the allusions.
