The optical phonon modes are calculated for a semiconductor Ge nanowire in the framework of a continuum approach, where the theoretical treatment is adapted to the nonpolar case and is improved by incorporating the linear terms in the wave vector. The theory is expected to provide better results than those provided by other long-wavelength treatments.

Shear horizontal piezoelectric wave scattering was observed in peizocomposite media.

Calculations of high electric field transport for strained Si/GeSi double heterostructure (DHS) along with Si channel and by applying the analytical Fokker Planck approach (FPA) to drift diffusion in energy space are discussed. Results show good agreement between DHS and Monte Carlo simulations.

Considerable research attention has been focused on vibrations in piezoelectric laminated composites because of the increasing use of piezoelectric transducer in ultrasonic devices. A study was conducted to investigate the electroelastic behavior of a laminated composite composed of piezoelectric polycrystal ceramics with 6 mm symmetry. Among other results, it was found that resonance frequency declines with the radius increment and increases with the thickness and number of layers increment.

A general mathematical treatment was used in the analysis of wave propagation in layered piezoelectric structures putting special emphasis on semiconductor layered systems. The treatment is based on the application of macroscopic physics of continuous media and is valid for application on long wavelength. Results, in the form of propagating piezoelectric waves along the structure, are discussed.

Surface optical (SO) phonons are studied in the case of a spherical quantum-dot/quantum-well (QD/QW) heterostructure in the framework of a dielectric continuum approach. The prototypical case is a QD/QW of CdS/HgS in the form of a spherical shell of HgS sandwiched between a spherical core of CdS and a cap layer of CdS. Structures of this type appear to be of present interest to the scientific community and have been intensively investigated in the latter years. It is assumed that the QD/QW heterostructure is surrounded by a host material considered as an infinite dielectric medium which does not participate of the polar optical vibrations. We study the SO phonons, their frequency dependence on the geometrical and material parameters, as well as the electron–phonon interaction Hamiltonian. The oscillator strength for magneto-optical transitions in the far-infrared spectral region is investigated considering one-electron states in a semiconductor quantum-ring (QR) nanostructure subjected to a constant external magnetic field. We analytically solve the stationary Schrödinger equation by applying hard-wall confinement conditions to a model system of the QR using the cylindrical geometry. The energy levels of this model system are calculated after solving the secular equation in a way that is independent of the particular material involved. The approach permits us to obtain universal results in the above sense. Dipole-allowed magneto-optical transitions are studied by calculating their oscillator-strength. We also analyze the persistent current due to the magnetic flux threaded by the QR. The results obtained are discussed in detail and comparison with previous works on this subject are made. We calculate the conduction electron scattering rates in a model for a semiconductor heterostructure (SH) of nanometric dimensions. Electron interaction with polar optical phonons (POP) is considered by applying POP modes analyzed in previous papers. The SH is modeled as a two interfaces slab, one of them mechanically free and the other one an interface with a semi infinite semiconductor. Only intraband electron transitions within the first subband are studied and a variational approach is introduced for the electron wavefunction. FUNDAMENTO: La prevalencia del tabaquismo en los adolescentes sigue indeseablemente elevada. Se precisan programas preventivos novedosos. Este estudio descriptivo transversal establece las variables conductuales asociadas al tabaquismo y las actividades más frecuentes de los adolescentes fuera de la escuela, útiles para plantear programas de prevención extraescolares. MÉTODO: Los datos se recogieron con un cuestionario validado en una muestra representativa de escolares asturianos de 10-11 y 13-14 años. Mediante regresión logística se estudiaron las variables asociadas al consumo de tabaco. RESULTADOS: El porcentaje de inicio del consumo oscila entre el 14,5% y el 42,5%, y el de fumadores regulares entre el 1,1% y el 12,4%, respectivamente. Se construyeron 2 modelos con las variables asociadas significativamente a la conducta de fumar, los cuales clasifican correctamente en fumador/no fumador al 98,85% y 91,39% de los niños, según la edad. Las variables ambientales (accesibilidad al tabaco y al alcohol y frecuentación de lugares de riesgo) son las primeras integrantes del modelo. Las actividades extraescolares más frecuentes son: ver TV, leer y escuchar música y ver o practicar deporte. CONCLUSIÓN: Los resultados proporcionan claves para el diseño de programas extraescolares "a medida" de las actividades de los adolescentes: publicidad en TV y en soportes musicales (discos, cintas, etc.), e información escrita personalizada en el hogar, con mensajes transmitidos por líderes juveniles del deporte, la canción y la televisión.

FUNDAMENTO: Los datos publicados sobre eficacia de programas escolares para la prevención del tabaquismo son inconsistentes. No está suficientemente estudiado el proveedor de tales programas como variable de confusión. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar el proceso de una intervención educativa intraescolar. MÉTODO: Líderes estudiantiles y profesores, entrenados y con guías, desarrollaron un programa de base social. Se encuestó aleatoriamente a 2 alumnos por cada aula, mediante cuestionario validado y pilotado: 318 niños. Se utilizó el Indice Kappa para medir la fiabilidad, y el Coeficiente de Correlación Intraclase, el de Pearson y el análisis de las diferencias individuales para comparar los datos de ajuste al programa, proporcionados por alumnos y profesores. RESULTADOS: La media de ajuste por aula fue 30,07 puntos (48 =100% de ajuste). El 26% de los niños no pudo citar una alternativa a las ventajas de fumar, 71,7% desconocía la frecuencia de consumo en adultos y 19,5% no pudo evocar ningún truco propio de la publicidad del tabaco. Menos de la mitad realizó un sociodrama sobre el tema, como era preceptivo. El CCI fue 0,21, Pearson 0,25 (p = 0,02) y el intervalo de concordancia entre las calificaciones de profesores y alumnos fue de 6,93 puntos (-1,70 a 5,23). CONCLUSIONES: El ajuste de la implementación al modelo de programa propuesto fue insuficiente. Encontramos escasa correspondencia entre la autocalificación del profesorado y la puntuación alcanzada por los alumnos en el ajuste al programa. La evaluación del proceso es esencial para interpretar correctamente la evaluación del impacto.
