Chocolate spot (Botrytis fabae) is a disease that threatens faba bean production in Mexico, as it can cause up to 70% yield losses. Currently, indiscriminate fungicides combat this disease, leading to environmental and human health problems. In this context, the effect of applying ethanolic extracts of two native plants of Mexico (Litsea glaucescens and Tagetes erecta), and Ruta graveolens was evaluated under in vitro and field conditions, in comparison to a commercial fungicide (Benomyl®) on the percentage of inhibition, incidence, severity, and relevant agronomic variables (plant height, number of secondary stems, number of flowers, and number and weight of pods). Applications with ethyl alcohol and water were used as controls. Both the bay laurel extract and Benomyl® achieved 100% inhibition under in vitro conditions, while in the field, they reduced severity by up to 51% at the beginning and end of the experiment. Plants treated with the marigold extract showed greater plant height (90.3 cm), while those treated with ethyl alcohol (control 1) had the lowest height (76.5 cm). The fungicide and bay laurel extract produced pods with higher weight (166.3 g and 139.2 g, respectively), while the water control produced pods weighing only 33.1 g. The ethanolic extract of bay laurel could potentially replace the chemical control of chocolate spot without affecting faba bean crop yield. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mexico generates specific phytosanitary regulations for each product and origin to prevent the entry of quarantine pests and/or delay their spread within the national territory, including fungi and oomycetes. Phytosanitary regulations are established based on available information on the presence or absence of these pathogens in the country; however, the compilation and precise analysis of reports is a challenging task due to many publications lacking scientific rigor in determining the presence of a taxon of phytosanitary interest in the country. This review evaluated various studies reporting the presence of plant pathogenic fungi and oomycetes in Mexico and concluded that some lists of diseases and phytopathogenic organisms lack technical-scientific basis. Thus, it highlights the need and presents an excellent opportunity to establish a National Collection of Fungal Cultures and a National Herbarium for obligate parasites, as well as to generate a National Database of Phytopathogenic Fungi and Oomycetes present in Mexico, supported by the combination of morphological, molecular, epidemiological, pathogenicity, symptom, and micrograph data. If realized, this would have a direct impact on many future applications related to various topics, including quarantines, risk analysis, biodiversity studies, and monitoring of fungicide resistance, among others. Kinematic reconstruction of lower-limb movements using electroencephalography (EEG) has been used in several rehabilitation systems. However, the nonlinear relationship between neural activity and limb movement may challenge decoders in real-time Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) applications. This paper proposes a nonlinear neural decoder using an Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) to infer lower-limb kinematics from EEG signals during pedaling. The results demonstrated maximum decoding accuracy using slow cortical potentials in the delta band (0.1-4 Hz) of 0.33 for Pearson's r-value and 8 for the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). This leaves an open door to the development of closed-loop EEG-based BCI systems for kinematic monitoring during pedaling rehabilitation tasks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: In this study, we focus on the evaluation of the conservation priority of amphibian species in Chile. We emphasize the importance of establishing standardized criteria to evaluate and classify this priority, considering factors such as extinction risk, geographic distribution, and ecological importance. We establish priority categories for species, allowing us to identify those that require immediate attention in terms of conservation. Six species with a high priority, eight with a medium priority, twenty-two with a low priority, and twenty-two with no priority were identified. We emphasize the relevance of the Telmatobiidae and Alsodidae families as conservation priorities, highlighting the need to focus our conservation efforts on these amphibian families in Chile. This approach provides a solid basis for informed decision making in the allocation of limited resources for biodiversity conservation. Resources are limited in global biodiversity conservation efforts, which emphasizes the significance of setting conservation priorities. Using standardized criteria, we evaluated 58 amphibian species in Chile to determine their conservation priority (CP). Species with insufficient historical data had their values marked as missing. With a median value of p = 1.67, the results demonstrated CP values ranging from p = 0.48 to p = 3.0, classifying species into priority and non-priority groups. Four levels were established for the priority categories: no priority, low priority, medium priority, and high priority. Additionally, the Telmatobiidae and Alsodidae families were identified as two more priority families. Notably, the species with the highest priority were found to be T. halli, T. fronteriensis, T. philippii, T. chusmisensis, A. pehuenche, and Alsodes tumultuosus, where T. philippii and T. fronteriensis have equal priority for conservation at the national level according to the conservation priority analysis. Eight priority families—the Alsodidae, Batrachylidae, Bufonidae, Ceratophryidae, Leptodactylidae, Rhinodermatidae, and Telmatobiidae—were determined, and 14 species—or 24% of the species examined—need further study. Based on the conservation priority analysis, the species T. fronteriensis and T. philippii share the highest priority for conservation at the national level (p = 2.50). With 70% of the amphibians under study being threatened mainly by habitat loss, pollution, and emerging diseases, the creation of conservation categories made the threat assessment process easier. Due to a lack of information on geographic distribution and abundance, quantitatively classifying amphibians in Chile remains difficult. Infiltration of the mesoporous structure of SBA-15 silica as a hard template with phenanthroline complexes of Fe3+ and Co2+ allowed the simultaneous dispersion of nitrogen, iron and cobalt species on the surface of the obtained carbonaceous CMK-3 silica replica, with potential as bifunctional heterogeneous catalysts for the cathodic oxygen reduction and evolution reactions (ORR and OER). The textural properties and mesopore structure depended on the composition of the material. The carbonaceous FeCoNCMK-3 (1/1), obtained with an Fe/Co molar ratio of 1/1, exhibited an ordered cylindrical mesoporous structure with a high mesopore volume, a rather homogeneous composition in terms of total and surface concentrations of iron and cobalt, and a balanced presence of pyridinic-, pyrrolic- and graphitic-N species. FeCoNCMK-3 (1/1) could improve the ORR kinetics by adsorption and reduction of O2 through the 4-electron mechanism with a current density of −17.37 mA cm−2, Eonset of 1.13 V vs. RHE and E1/2 of 0.75 V when compared to metal-free, monometallic or bimetallic electrocatalysts with a higher amount of cobalt than that of iron. In addition, FeCoNCMK-3 (1/1) exhibited activity for the OER, presenting lower values of Eonset (1.52 V), Ej10 (1.78 V) and the Tafel slope (76.3 mV dec−1) with respect to other catalysts. When evaluated as a cathode in a prototype of a Zn–air battery, FeCoNCMK-3 (1/1) exhibited a high open circuit voltage of 1.41 V, a peak power density of 66.84 mW cm−2, a large specific capacity of 818.88 mA h gZn−1, and cycling for 20 h but with deactivation upon cycling. Societal Impact Statement: Climate change is predicted to increase drought and soil salinity in Mediterranean‐type ecosystems (MTEs), posing a significant threat to global food security. Genetic modification of crops to counteract this threat is expensive and has not met with universal support, and alternatives are hence needed to enhance crop production in MTEs. Here, fungal endophytes from the Atacama Desert, High Andes and Antarctica inoculated onto three crops were found to alleviate the negative effects of drought and salinity on plant performance. The study concludes that extremophile endophytes might be used to enhance crop performance as the climate of MTEs changes over future decades. Summary: Climate change will curtail the ability to provide sufficient food for our rapidly expanding population. Improvements to crop production in changing environments, particularly Mediterranean‐type ecosystems (MTEs), which are increasingly subjected to drought and salinisation, are hence urgently needed. Here, we explored the possibility that fungal endophytes from extreme environments can be used to enhance crop yield, survival and tolerance to environmental stresses.Plants of lettuce, tomato and bell pepper were inoculated with up to six species of endophytic fungi isolated from the Atacama Desert, the High Andes and Antarctica. They were then exposed in the field for up to 120 days in each of three summers to current climatic conditions or to a future climate scenario simulating increased drought and soil salinisation.Compared with uninoculated plants, the yield and survival of inoculated crops were increased by up to two‐fold under the future climate scenario. These effects were in part attributable to the improved water balance of inoculated crops exposed to drought and salinisation. The inocula also increased the concentrations of total phenols and proline in leaves and decreased lipid peroxidation when plants were subjected to increased aridity and salinity. A mixed inoculum of six endophytes from the extreme environments conferred the most beneficial effects on crop performance, with a commercially available inoculum having fewer positive effects on crops.We conclude that the inoculation of crops with endophytes from extreme environments may be a viable solution to sustaining crop production in MTEs exposed to rapid climate change. In Cuba, despite a high sero-prevalence of bluetongue virus (BTV), circulating serotypes remain unknown. The aim of this study was to identify circulating BTV serotypes in farms throughout the western region of Cuba. Blood samples were collected from 200 young cattle and sheep between May and July 2022 for virological analyses (PCR, viral isolation and virus neutralization) and genome sequencing. The results confirmed viral circulation, with viro-prevalence of 25% for BTV. The virus was isolated from 18 blood samples and twelve BTV serotypes were identified by sequencing RT-PCR products targeting the segment 2 of the BTV genome (BTV-1, 2, 3, 6, 10, 12, 13, 17, 18, 19, 22 and 24). Finally, the full genome sequences of 17 Cuban BTV isolates were recovered using a Sequence Independent Single Primer Amplification (SISPA) approach combined to MinION Oxford Nanopore sequencing technology. All together, these results highlight the co-circulation of a wide diversity of BTV serotypes in a quite restricted area and emphasize the need for entomological and livestock surveillance, particularly in light of recent changes in the global distribution and nature of BTV infections. Several bacteria that are associated with macroalgae can use phycocolloids as a carbon source. Strain INACH002, isolated from decomposing Porphyra (Rhodophyta), in King George Island, Antarctica, was screened and characterized for the ability to produce agarase and alginate-lyase enzymatic activities. Our strain INACH002 was identified as a member of the genus Flavobacterium, closely related to Flavobacterium faecale, using 16S rRNA gene analysis. The INACH002 strain was characterized as psychrotrophic due to its optimal temperature (17ºC) and maximum temperature (20°C) of growth. Agarase and alginate-lyase displayed enzymatic activities within a range of 10°C to 50°C, with differences in the optimal temperature to hydrolyze agar (50°C), agarose (50°C) and alginate (30°C) during the first 30 min of activity. Strain Flavobacterium INACH002 is a promising Antarctic biotechnological resource; however, further research is required to illustrate the structural and functional bases of the enzymatic performance observed during the degradation of different substrates at different temperatures.
