The findings of the Bryological Excursion conducted by the Working Group for Bryology of the Italian Botanical Society from 5 to 8 July 2012 on the Lucanian side of the Pollino National Park are presented herein. The objective of the excursion was to address the paucity of knowledge regarding bryological diversity in understudied regions of Italy. This endeavour led to the discovery of 150 species of bryophytes, 41 of which are novel to the Basilicata region. For each species, the collection location and growth substrate are indicated. Some of the species are of floristic and phytogeographic interest. This is a group of boreal and arctic-alpine species, previously documented only in the Alpine arc and at the highest peaks of the Apennine chain. The Pollino massif represents the southernmost limit of their range. It is worth noting the presence of Brachydontium trichodes, Schistidium papillosum, Tortula laureri and Herzogiella striatella. Another noteworthy assemblage of species is found on the ophiolitic rocks of Timpa delle Murge. The distinctive ecological characteristics of this substrate result in the evolution of species that are exclusive to these environments. The ecological characteristics and distribution of each species within these two groups are described in detail.

Calabria, the southernmost tip of the Italian Peninsula, is a biogeographically very interesting region for lichenologists, characterised by the abundance of oceanic and suboceanic species with subtropical affinities, but also by the presence of the southernmost outposts of several boreal species on the highest peaks. The lichen biota of Calabria, which began to be intensively studied only from the 1980s, hosts more than 1000 infrageneric taxa. The lichen herbarium of the Botanical Garden of the University of Calabria (CLU) is the most relevant lichen collection from this region. It was established in 1985 and it presently includes 16926 specimens, most of which were collected in Calabria, although there are also several specimens from other parts of Italy and from abroad.This dataset contains 16926 records of lichens for a total of 1316 species. Of the 15219 georeferenced specimens, 10254 were collected in Calabria, while 4965 in other administrative regions of Italy. The dataset is available through GBIF, as well as in ITALIC, the Information System of Italian Lichens.

This paper reports data on distribution of Petalophyllum ralfsii in Calabria (S Italy). Investigations conducted from 2016 to 2019 permitted to outline an updated and accurate overview on the number and size of the populations of the species in the region. New findings were recorded, while some known locations were not confirmed. The size of each population was measured by direct counting of thalli or by sampling with plots, enabling to have a reliable estimate of the species density. Analysis of data gives also important information on the ecology and dynamism of the species.

A phytosociological analysis of Tarsia Lake Regional Nature Reserve was carried out within a research project dealing with the vegetation of southern Italian wetlands. Twenty-four plant communities (19 associations and five communities not yet assigned to formal rank) were attributed to 17 alliances, 14 orders, and 11 classes. Most associations resulted as common in the Mediterranean area; however, as a response to the peculiarity of the local climatic and edaphic factors, some phytocoenoses were found as typical throughout central Europe but not observed in southern Italy, yet. Currently, this area is preserving a considerably interesting flora and vegetation for both naturalistic and phytogeographic reasons. Therefore, an appropriate monitoring and protection plan is needed in order to counteract the ongoing severe anthropogenic pressure.
