Ecstasy is a drug commonly associated with all-night, or all-weekend electronic dance events known as raves. Upperand middleclass clubs, gay bars and clubs, and party venues are other common public settings where ecstasy use occurs. During the mid to late 1990s its use was reported in locations as distant as Australia and New Zealand, England and Scotland, and North America. In the United States, use increased dramatically at the end of the millennium, and drug monitoring systems began to report its presence among urban youth. Using social influence, social marketing and diffusion theory, this paper outlines the micro-level processes through which ecstasy traveled from downtown clubs catering to suburban young adults through urban youth networks through distributors and users. The paper is based on participant observation, and in-depth interviews with dealers and users collected during the period of peak diffusion 1999-2001, and survey data collected from 401 poly-drug users between the ages of 16 and 24 and collected at two time points from 1999-2002. A museum hybrid space combines physical artifacts co-located with virtual and augmented reality displays. Although the technology exists to provide museums with hybrid space, there are no empirical studies on effectiveness of the museum hybrid space in terms of learning and enjoyment. This article takes an experimental approach and measures the enjoyment and learning (dependent variables) of participants in response to selected environments (independent variables) including a traditional environment (based on photos and labels), a video-enhanced environment (based on projected video clips), and a VR-enhanced environment (based on video game). The main outcome of this article is demonstrating that the use of VR technology and the resulting hybrid space (i.e., VR-enhanced environment) results in novel museum experiences that provide greater impacts on audience in terms of learning and enjoyment.

Addiction to prescription opioids is prevalent in primary care settings. Increasing prescription opioid use is largely responsible for a parallel increase in overdose nationally. Many patients most at risk for addiction and overdose come into regular contact with primary care providers. Lack of routine addiction screening results in missed treatment opportunities in this setting. We reviewed the literature on screening and brief interventions for addictive disorders in primary care settings, focusing on opioid addiction. Screening and brief interventions can improve health outcomes for chronic illnesses including diabetes, hypertension, and asthma. Similarly, through the use of screening and brief interventions, patients with addiction can achieve improved health outcome. A spectrum of low-threshold care options can reduce the negative health consequences among individuals with opioid addiction. Screening in primary care coupled with short interventions, including motivational interviewing, syringe distribution, naloxone prescription for overdose prevention, and buprenorphine treatment are effective ways to manage addiction and its associated risks and improve health outcomes for individuals with opioid addiction., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Inc. Background: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a prevalent chronic blood-borne infection among opioid-dependent patients on methadone maintenance treatment (MMT). Despite case reports and case-control studies, a randomized controlled trial (RCT) examining HCV treatment adherence in methadone-maintained patients is lacking and was the impetus for this ongoing RCT examining modified directly administered therapy for HCV treatment integrated within a MMT., Methods: Subjects were randomized 1:1 to receive HCV treatment as modified directly observed therapy (mDOT) into the MMT program or at a liver specialty clinic as self-administered therapy (SAT). Randomization was stratified based on HIV status and HCV genotype., Results: Twenty-one subjects to date have enrolled in this pilot study. The mDOT subjects have had greater success in starting treatment and 10 of the 12 mDOT subjects achieved early virologic response (EVR) at week 12 and 6 of those 10 achieved sustained virologic response (SVR). Of the nine SAT subjects, only three achieved EVR at week 12 and only one achieved SVR despite not completing the treatment., Conclusions: Hepatitis C treatment can be successfully integrated into a methadone maintenance clinic, and mDOT can be implemented with a methadone clinic's existing nursing and medical staff. Patients struggling with concurrent substance use and mental illness comorbidity may be successfully addressed in such settings and facilitate access to and completion of treatment through the utilization of on-site clinical services for HCV treatment and adherence support with mDOT. The exact importance of site of services and adherence support remains a significant area for future investigation.

This study suggests that use of embalming fluid as a mind-altering drug has been underreported. Based on a social network recruitment strategy, findings from a study in 2000 of 401 outreach worker-recruited polydrug-involved youth (ages 16-24 years) from the inner city of Hartford, CT indicate widespread (over 80% of study participants had used the drug at least once) and regular use of embalming fluid mixed with either marijuana or mint. This paper reports findings on frequency and distribution of use, experience, and consequences of use, access to the drug, and characteristics of embalming fluid users. Given the toxic substances that comprise embalming fluid, and the tendency, affirmed in the present study, of the drug to be associated with violent behavior, there is a need to recognize embalming fluid as a drug of concern among youth.

Improved access to sterile syringes decreases risks related to blood-borne transmission of HIV and hepatitis among injection drug users (IDUs). While syringe exchange programs and pharmacy sales of over-the-counter syringes have received considerable attention from researchers and interventionists during the past decade, little is known about informal economy street syringe sellers. In Hartford, CT. as well as other regions throughout the United States a large percentage of IDUs utilize street sellers to facilitate their injection activities. A qualitative and ethnographic study was conducted in Hartford between 1999 and 2001 to help elucidate the public health risks and benefits of street syringe sellers.
