It is a popular non-therapeutic procedure that can be performed by people of various abilities and skills, ranging from trained medical practitioners to non-specialists, depending on their cultural and social backgrounds. Glans amputation and death due to severe bleeding, as a complication of this procedure, are rare, and the patients are left with morbidity and life-long complications. This study was designed to evaluate the sympathetic skin response (SSR) in men with CP type IIIb compared to normal population.Patients and Methods: For two years, about 14 patients suffering from CP type IIIb according to NIH-CPSI and 26 healthy control men were enrolled in this study. SSR was performed in all the subjects with a standard method. Bilateral palmar and plantar latency and amplitude of SSR were recorded in response to the median and tibial nerve electrical stimulations. SSR is considered abnormal when the latency is prolonged, and the amplitude reduced.Results: SSR latency in the left and right median nerve was significantly prolonged in the patient with CP type IIIb group compared to the control group (p=0.039 and 0.006, respectively). Additionally, the amplitude was reduced in patients with CP type IIIb group compared to the control group in the right tibial nerve (p=0.017).Conclusion: Sympathetic skin response may be a helpful diagnostic test for men with chronic prostatitis type IIIb. However, this observation needs to be validated in a large sample cohort study with long-term follow-up.Keywords: chronic prostatitis, prostate, sympathetic skin response

Patients and methods: A total of 184 patients suspected with urolithiasis who had undergone NCCT and US radiologic investigation from 2015 to 2017 were enrolled in this study. The sensitivity, specificity, and stone size measured in US were validated by NCCT. Data of the stone size in US were classified into four groups (0–3.5, 3.6–5, 5.1–10, >10 mm) and then compared with NCCT data. Results: In 184 patients, NCCT detected 276 (97.2%) stones, while US could identify 213 (75.5%) stones. Overall sensitivity and specificity of US were 75.4% and 16.7%, respectively. Detection rate of mid and distal ureteral stone was lower than that at other locations. The detection rate increased with the stone size. About 73% concordance was obtained for the stone size measured by US and NCCT (Pearson’s correlation coefficient was 0.841). Malnutrition and improper nutrition may lead to physical and mental growth disorder and cognitive function. This study aims to determine the prevalence of malnutrition and its relationship with educational status among primary school children in Zahedan, Iran. Methods: During a cross-sectional study with a multi-stage random sampling method of 780 boy and girl students, first, second, and third grades of elementary school were included to study. Demographic and anthropometric of students were collected based on the sample size. Malnutrition was assessed according to World Health Organization indicators for the relevant age group. This assessment was based on body mass index (BMI) for age, height for age, and weight for age. Results: The prevalence of malnutrition was severe wasting, wasting, overweight, and obesity which were 0.8, 4.6, 6.4, and 5%, and severe underweight and underweight which were 0.9 and 4.7%, respectively. Severe stunting and stunting were observed in 0.3 and 2.8%, respectively. Abstract: LNPK encodes a conserved membrane protein that stabilizes the junctions of the tubular endoplasmic reticulum network playing crucial roles in diverse biological functions. Recently, homozygous variants in LNPK were shown to cause a neurodevelopmental disorder (OMIM#618090) in four patients displaying developmental delay, epilepsy, and non-specific brain malformations including corpus callosum hypoplasia and variable impairment of cerebellum. We sought to delineate the molecular and phenotypic spectrum of LNPK-related disorder. Exome or genome sequencing was carried out in eleven families. Thorough clinical and neuroradiological evaluation was performed for all the affected individuals, including review of previously reported patients. We identified twelve distinct homozygous loss-of-function variants in sixteen individuals presenting with moderate to profound developmental delay, cognitive impairment, regression, refractory epilepsy and a recognizable neuroimaging pattern consisting of corpus callosum hypoplasia and signal alterations of the forceps minor (“ear-of-the-lynx” sign), variably associated with substantia nigra signal alterations, mild brain atrophy, short midbrain, and cerebellar hypoplasia/atrophy. In summary, we define the core phenotype of LNPK-related disorder and expand the list of neurological disorders presenting with the “ear of the lynx” sign suggesting a possible common underlying mechanism related to endoplasmic reticulum-phagy dysfunction.

HLD17 (Hypomyelinating Leukodystrophy 17) is an inherited white matter disorder characterized by insufficient myelin production due to biallelic loss of function mutations in the aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase complex-interacting multifunctional protein 2 (AIMP2) gene. In silico analysis of SNVs (single nucleotide variants) in the AIMP2 gene is an efficient and cost-effective method for analyzing and predicting the impact of mutations on protein function and disease pathophysiology.The study used dbSNP and Ensembl databases to obtain data on 343 nonsynonymous single nucleotide variants (nsSNVs) in the human AIMP2 gene. Six prediction algorithm tools were used to assess the effects of these nsSNVs on AIMP2's functions and structures. Results showed that 18 nsSNVs were located within functional domains, while 10 nsSNVs led to decreased protein stability. The structural and functional properties of the AIMP2 protein were investigated using databases such as Predict Protein, Mutpred2, and HOPE. ConSurf analysis provided information about conserved nsSNVs. GeneMANIA and STRING software tools were used to predict interactions between gene-gene and protein-protein, respectively. Phyre2 and I-TASSER web servers were used to predict the 3D structures of wild-type and mutant proteins.In addition, having the challenge of probable post-translational modification sites in the AIMP2, we made predictions using various bioinformatics tools. Consecuently, three minor mutations (L138Q, V161E, and I188N) and five major mutations (C23S, D121G, I122S, P128S, and W268S) were found to affect the AIMP2 protein's structure or function. Anyway, These mutations need to be further studied and confirmed through experimental investigation and GWAS studies.

The research employs a mixed-methods approach, utilizing a literature review within the qualitative framework to identify key empowerment drivers. Subsequently, a quantitative approach leverages DEMATEL to pinpoint the most impactful drivers. This investigation aims to provide stakeholders with actionable insights, highlighting the critical role of technology in fostering equitable and sustainable economic advancement for women entrepreneurs. Furthermore, the study emphasizes the importance of gathering information from a developing nation like Iran, as its findings can hold significant implications for other countries experiencing similar developmental stages. Ultimately, the research seeks to inform the creation of effective policies, support initiatives, and educational programs. These interventions aim to empower women entrepreneurs to leverage digital tools for sustainable business growth, ultimately contributing to a more equitable and environmentally conscious future.

Due to the increasing trend of urbanization over the last few decades, city development and planning have become a major concern for the authorities. Many efforts have been made in the field of urban growth modelling by researchers and urban planners to investigate the factors and effects of urbanization and urban growth. The work presented here is part of a project that simulates urban densification scenarios. This work describes the automatic detection and classification of neighbourhoods based on vector data of buildings and parcels. During the urbanization process, an empty parcel is divided into sub-parcels to accommodate new buildings. In general, the sub-parcels created have the same characteristics (surface area, building height, etc.) as the already urbanized parcels in their vicinity. Here, the aim is to detect and identify the different neighbourhoods in the study area to determine the characteristics of the new parcels. This is done in three steps: first, classifying the urbanized parcels, then identifying the different neighbourhoods based on this classification, and finally dividing the parcels into sub-parcels with features depending on the surrounding neighbourhoods. The model developed here is designed to automatically identify different urban zones and simulate the division of parcels over time according to a variety of urban density scenarios. This model is also compatible with the creation of new buildings based on these levels of density.

Abstract This paper proposes a robust distributed observer for uncertain systems where some unknown, unstructured, and bounded uncertainties exist in system matrices. In distributed observer, each node includes an observer which directly estimates a part of the system states by its limited measurements and further, the estimation of other states indirectly obtains via exchanging information with neighbouring nodes. It is shown that whole states convergence achieves if the LTI system is observable as well as the network graph is strongly connected. Also, in the proposed distributed observer, by applying a new term in dynamic equation, the robust performance is achieved in dealing with uncertainties in system matrices. The observer gains synthesis is then formulated in terms of linear matrix inequalities. Finally, the simulation results are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed distributed observer to handle system uncertainties.

Abstract Background Eimeria is a protozoan parasite that affects poultry, particularly chickens, causing a disease known as coccidiosis. This disease imposes substantial significant economic challenges to the poultry sector. Objectives The current study aimed to estimate the global prevalence and associated risk factors of Eimeria in domestic chickens. Methods Multiple databases (Scopus, PubMed, ProQuest, Web of Science and Google Scholar) were searched for articles published until June 2023. The pooled prevalence was estimated using a random‐effects model with a 95% confidence interval. The statistical analysis was conducted using meta packages in R version (3.6.1). Results In total, 41 articles fulfilled the eligibility criteria. The global pooled prevalence was 44.3% (36.9%–51.8%) with Eimeria tenella (38.7%, 30.1%–47.7%) as the most prevalent species. The highest pooled prevalence was related to the Western Pacific Region (80.5%, 72.6%–87.3%) and urban areas (44.4%, 36.5%–52.6%). Moreover, areas with humid subtropical climates represent the highest overall prevalence (75.8%, 46.6%–95.9%). Conclusion The necessity for robust and innovative strategies for preventing and managing this disease cannot be overstated. Addressing Eimeria impact is crucial not only for safeguarding poultry health but also for sustaining the economic viability of the poultry industry.

Abstract Background Patients with mental disorders have a high risk of intestinal parasitic infection due to poor hygiene practices. Hence, to better clarify this overlooked phenomenon, the current study is conducted to determine the global prevalence of protozoan parasite infections in patients with mental disorders and investigate the associated risk factors. Methods Several databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, ProQuest, and Google Scholar) were searched for papers published until December 2022. The fixed effect meta-analysis was used to estimate the overall odds ratio (OR) and pooled prevalence was estimated using a random-effects model with a 95% confidence interval (CI). Results Totally, 131 articles (91 case–control and 40 cross-sectional studies) met the eligibility criteria. Patients with mental disorders were significantly at higher risk for protozoan parasites than healthy controls (OR: 2.059, 1.830–2.317). The highest pooled OR (2.485, 1.413–4.368) was related to patients with neurodevelopmental disorders, and the highest pooled prevalence was detected in patients with neurodevelopmental disorders (0.341, 0.244–0.446), followed by bipolar and related disorders (0.321, 0.000–0.995). Toxoplasma gondii was the most prevalent protozoan parasite (0.343, 0.228–0.467) in cross-sectional studies and the highest pooled OR was related to Cyclospora cayetanensis (4.719, 1.352–16.474) followed by Cryptosporidium parvum (4.618, 2.877–7.412). Conclusion Our findings demonstrated that individuals afflicted with mental disorders are significantly more susceptible to acquiring protozoan parasites in comparison to healthy individuals. Preventive interventions, regular screening, and treatment approaches for parasitic diseases should be considered for patients with mental disorders.

Among the potential animal reservoirs of the zoonotic parasite T. gondii, birds have received relatively little attention. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the global status and to provide an overview of the epidemiology of T. gondii infection in birds. The standard protocol of preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were followed. Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, Science Direct, ProQuest, and Google Scholar were searched for relevant publications from January 1990, to March 2024. All peer-reviewed original research articles describing the prevalence of T. gondii in birds were included. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied, and both direct and indirect detection were considered. The point estimates and 95% confidence intervals were calculated using the meta-package in R (version 3.6.1). The variance between studies (heterogeneity) was quantified by the I2 index. Finally, 258 articles (including 380 datasets) were eligible for inclusion in the systematic review and meta-analysis. The global pooled prevalence was 24% (21 - 26%). The highest prevalence of T. gondii was observed in buzzards (52%, 34 - 70%), turkeys (31%, 17 - 46%), and chickens (30%, 26 - 34%). The present study provides a comprehensive view of the global prevalence of T. gondii in birds.

Abstract Background Canine babesiosis is a clinically significant tick‐transmitted disease caused by several species of the intraerythrocytic protozoan parasite Babesia, which result in a wide range of clinical manifestations, from mild, transient infection to serious disease and even death. Objectives The current study aimed to estimate the global prevalence and associated risk factors of Babesia in dogs. Methods Multiple databases (PubMed, Scopus, ProQuest, Web of Science and Google Scholar) were searched for relevant literature published from January 2000 up to December 2022. The statistical analyses were performed based on the R software (version 3.6) meta‐package. Results Out of 23,864 publications, 229 studies met the inclusion criteria. The pooled prevalence of canine babesiosis was 0.120 (95% CI; 0.097–0.146). The highest pooled prevalence was found in Europe (0.207, 95% CI; 0.097–0.344). Among several species, Babesia canis was the most prevalent parasite (0.216, 95% CI; 0.056–0.441). The highest pooled prevalence of Babesia in dogs was observed in the summer season (0.097, 95% CI; 0.040–0.174). Conclusions Regular screening and appropriate control strategies are recommended for the prevention of transmission of tick‐borne disease transmission among dogs.

The current study presents a comprehensive review of worldwide waterborne parasitic protozoan outbreaks reported between 2017 and 2022. In total, 416 outbreaks were attributed to the waterborne transmission of parasitic protozoa. Cryptosporidium accounted for 77.4% (322) of outbreaks, while Giardia was identified as the etiological agent in 17.1% (71). Toxoplasma gondii and Naegleria fowleri were the primary causes in 1.4% (6) and 1% (4) of outbreaks, respectively. Blastocystis hominis, Cyclospora cayetanensis, and Dientamoeba fragilis were independently identified in 0.72% (3) of outbreaks. Moreover, Acanthamoeba spp., Entamoeba histolytica, Vittaforma corneae, and Enterocytozoon bieneusi were independently the causal agents in 0.24% (1) of the total outbreaks. The majority of the outbreaks (195, 47%) were reported in North America. The suspected sources for 313 (75.2%) waterborne parasitic outbreaks were recreational water and/or swimming pools, accounting for 92% of the total Cryptosporidium outbreaks. Furthermore, 25.3% of the outbreaks caused by Giardia were associated with recreational water and/or swimming pools. Developing countries are most likely to be impacted by such outbreaks due to the lack of reliable monitoring strategies and water treatment processes. There is still a need for international surveillance and reporting systems concerning both waterborne diseases and water contamination with parasitic protozoa. Trafficking protein particle (TRAPP) complexes, which include the TRAPPC4 protein, regulate membrane trafficking between lipid organelles in a process termed vesicular tethering. TRAPPC4 was recently implicated in a recessive neurodevelopmental condition in four unrelated families due to a shared c.454+3A>G splice variant. Here, we report 23 patients from 17 independent families with an early-infantile-onset neurodegenerative presentation, where we also identified the homozygous variant hg38:11:119020256 A>G (NM_016146.5:c.454+3A>G) in TRAPPC4 through exome or genome sequencing. No other clinically relevant TRAPPC4 variants were identified among any of over 10,000 patients with neurodevelopmental conditions. We found the carrier frequency of TRAPPC4 c.454+3A>G was 2.4-5.4 per 10,000 healthy individuals. Affected individuals with the homozygous TRAPPC4 c.454+3A>G variant showed profound psychomotor delay, developmental regression, early-onset epilepsy, microcephaly and progressive spastic tetraplegia. Based upon RNA sequencing, the variant resulted in partial exon 3 skipping and generation of an aberrant transcript owing to use of a downstream cryptic splice donor site, predicting a premature stop codon and nonsense mediated decay. These data confirm the pathogenicity of the TRAPPC4 c.454+3A>G variant, and refine the clinical presentation of TRAPPC4-related encephalopathy.

In the present study, electrospinning of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and polydiacetylene (PDA) with pomegranate peel (PG) extract was investigated for the preparation of smart and antibacterial nanofibers. Briefly, PDA-PVP solutions were firstly prepared at two different ratios and electrospun under different conditions. Based on the SEM results, the 1:3 ratio of PDA:PVP nanofibers, with an average fiber diameter of 130 ± 40 nm, electrospun at a voltage of 15 kV, feeding rate of 0.5 ml/h and collector distance of 15 cm was selected as the optimal conditions. The addition of PG resulted in an increase in the diameter of the fibers. The color of the electrospun fibers was altered from blue to red due to changes in either temperature or pH or exposure to different solvents. The antibacterial test showed high antimicrobial activity of the fibers loaded with PG extract against both S. aureus and E. coli. MTT assay and cell attachment also validated the biocompatibility of the fabricated nanofibers. Thus, the prepared smart PG-loaded nanofibers had a high potential to be used in wound dressing applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
