My first aim has been to identify the implicit assumptions underlying Winnicott's detailed notes on a fragment of an analysis dating from 1955 and published after his death. The importance given by Winnicott to the father figure as early as 1955 is one of my discoveries; another is the deep Freudian roots of his thinking. In this essay I propose a new way of linking together the concepts of 'paternal function' and the 'psychoanalytical frame'. Developing my hypothesis, I compare my reading of Winnicott and my way of reading José Bleger's study on the frame. Like Winnicott, I explore in detail a process of discovery, focusing on what the analyst and the patient are nor fully aware of ...'as yet'. I am not proposing to unify Winnicott's and Bleger's thinking. My aim is to avoid the pitfall of eclecticism and, in so doing, to recognize both the related depths they sound in their thinking and their otherness. Sometimes memory does not speak, it acts. Our paper provides an insight into psychoanalytic research in the aftermath of the Holocaust and the effects of extreme trauma in post-Nazi Germany. Examining this, we introduced the concept of 'scenic memory of the Shoah' several years ago. This concept elucidates how traumatic memory performs -- in word and deed. In this paper, we return to this concept as we listen to the story of an amulet and witness a scenic constellation arising in an encounter with third-generation participants. It is a story of loss, survival, severe feelings of guilt and how these themes present in the third generation. We discuss how the transmission of extreme trauma has emerged in our research process and allude to why, when it comes to trauma and guilt, we need to broaden our view on how these stories are told. Thomas Lehr's novella Frühling (Spring, 2001) presents the last seconds of the fifty-year-old protagonist's life - between the moment he shoots himself and the advent of his death. As an adolescent he realised he was the child of a perpetrator father who conducted human experiments on inmates as a Nazi concentration camp doctor. Written in an extreme variant of autonomous inner monologue, the novella interlaces perceptions and memories without transition. The textual structure dissects these incidents, as the syntax is often destroyed by punctuation marks and irregular orthography. At one point, the first-person narrator chooses the formula ‘lightning flashes of my burning memory', which aptly describes Lehr's poetic technique, reminiscent of traumatic flashback. This article argues that the protagonist undergoes residual experiences of dissociation as a result of his insurmountable entanglement in the guilt of the father. Thus, Frühling is a radical and disturbing literary treatment of trauma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
