Louis Farrakhan's Nation of Islam is a small minority Muslim community with affiliated mosques and study groups throughout the United States. Minister Farrakhan is a well-known and divisive religious leader. Indeed, he is regarded by many as a dangerous anti-Semite. Much less is known about the rank-and-file members of the NOI who work tirelessly to improve socioeconomic conditions in their respective communities. Minister Farrakhan has engaged in interfaith activism throughout his career. His followers have likewise made significant efforts to work across religious and racial lines. This paper concerns itself with the social activism and inter-faith outreach efforts that NOI members make to transform their communities and to ease tensions where they exist within these communities. The paper argues that such efforts have earned the NOI a degree of prestige and respect while also providing Minister Farrakhan with an ever-growing platform in some communities. Elijah Muhammad's Nation of Islam converted thousands of African American men to Islam during the height of the Civil Rights Movement and the Black Power Movement. Muhammad's men neither protested for Civil Rights nor subscribed to the militancy of the Black Power Movement. Indeed, they construed both to be fundamentally flawed routes to justice, freedom, and equality. Nation men, or Fruit of Islam (FOI) as they are more commonly known, believed that through Islam, racial separation, and community building initiatives they could ultimately reclaim their freedom, self‐respect, and manhood. The NOI provided men with a newfound sense of self and purpose and in doing so imbued them with a deep‐rooted appreciation for Islam, as taught by Elijah Muhammad. Rank‐and‐file male members of the faith community remain largely overlooked in the extant scholarship on the NOI. This article seeks to recover the stories of rank‐and‐file FOI. African American women's contributions to the Resurrected Nation of Islam (NOI) and its national newspaper, I The Final Call i remain largely undocumented. NOI convert and author, Hashim Hakim, for example, notes that "The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan said that other than himself, The Final Call is the number one minister of the Nation of Islam." I The Final Call i is aimed at a national and international audience. Staff writer, Kimberley Muhammad, noted Ava's "profound message" but ended with a comment from NOI minister Donell Muhammad who stated that Ava had "...given herself totally over to Minister Farrakhan and he has birthed in her a spiritual attorney that elevates her above any ordinary attorney that goes to the law schools of (this country)". NOI convert, Rasheed Muhammad gave voice to this ignorance of traditional Islam in his 2017 book entitled, I My Testimony to Minister Farrakhan i in which he remarked that as an NOI member he "...only knew one type of Muslim - Black Muslims. In December 2013, for example, the newspaper quoted NOI Minister Akbar Muhammad as commenting that: "By Minister Farrakhan addressing the Deen Intensive Academy, it shows the importance of the Nation of Islam continuing to learn aspects of the faith.". The article focuses on the contributions of Louis Farrakhan in the development and leading of the Islamic organization, the Nation of Islam (NOI), and the course of its future once this leader is no longer around. It discusses the formation of the Executive Board of the NOI in order to help solve the problems of the Nation. Further, it argues against some commonly held notions in the U.S. that predict the possible disintegration of the NOI when Farrakhan is no longer present.
