The increase in burning, deforestation, and the exorbitant use of fossil fuels have contributed to the increase in carbon dioxide emissions; this gas is responsible for the intensification of the greenhouse effect and radical climate changes. In this way, it becomes necessary to find alternatives to reduce its emission. Porous carbon materials synthesized from lignocellulosic waste can be employed in technologies for capture and utilization of CO 2 due to the advantages such as selectivity, low-cost synthesis, high surface area and pore volume, and thermal and chemical stability. Considering the availability of Brazil nut biomass residues in the Amazon region, this article proposes to synthesize activated carbon from the lignocellulosic residue using physical and chemical activation methods for CO 2 capture. The analysis of N 2 adsorption-desorption isotherms proves the predominance of a microporous structure when using the two synthesis methods described here. In physical activation, the surface area was 912 m 2 /g, while, in chemical activation, it was 1421 to 2730 m 2 /g. The sample treated via the chemical method (BS6-K1) showed better performance in CO 2 adsorption, with adsorption results of 3.8 and 6 mmol/g of CO 2 at 25 ℃ and 0 °C, respectively, at 101 kPa. CO 2 adsorption capacity is due to the high volume of ultramicropores. We present a thermodynamic perspective of the microsolvation of ions by rare gas atoms, which is based on parallel tempering Monte Carlo (PTMC) simulations. This allows the establishment of a clear relationship between the structure of the solvation shells and the heat capacity (CV) as a function of the number of individual solvent species. The dependence of CV on the temperature allows the identification of the internal structure rearrangements and the onset of partial or total melting of the clusters. As an application, we have employed the PTMC technique to study the thermodynamic properties of clusters resulting from the microsolvation of Li+ by argon atoms. Specifically, calculations have been carried out for the clusters Li+Arn (n = 4-18, 33, 34, and 38) by applying two different potential energy surfaces (PESs): one includes only two-body interactions, while the other also incorporates three-body contributions. Whenever possible, we compare the present thermodynamic results with global optimization studies carried out previously (F. V. Prudente, J. M. C. Marques and F. B. Pereira, Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2017, 19, 25707; W. S. Jesus et al., Int. J. Quantum Chem., 2019, 119, e25860). We conclude that the melting process arises for lower temperatures when the model PES accounts for three-body interactions. Additionally, we characterize the melting processes of the first and second solvation shells. For some specific clusters, structural rearrangements of the most external argon atoms are observed at very low temperatures.

Rural communities comprise around 20% of Caribbean and South American populations, but are under-represented in autosomal marker databases. That deficiency is problematic for forensic genetics, as it relies on accurate descriptions of genetic variation and population structure. Brazilian populations were shaped by an intense, complex and heterogeneous process of admixture encompassing mainly Amerindians, Sub-Saharan Africans and Europeans. Quilombos are Brazilian populations with significant African descent that have remained genetically isolated to some extent from surrounding populations. In the reported study, we analyzed three rural Quilombo populations: Kalunga; Riacho de Sacutiaba e Sacutiaba; and Mocambo, along with a dataset from the HGDP-CEPH panel. Aiming to contribute to representative genetic databases of forensic interest, we analyse the three rural Quilombos populations and investigate how their genetic makeup relates to their history by analyzing an established forensic test, comprising 46 ancestry-informative (AIM) Indels. The panel was chosen for its high power in differentiating the main contributing populations of Brazil. Parental populations were selected from HGDP-CEPH data available at the forInDel allele frequency browser based on historic patterns applicable to the study populations and the amount of variability observed within and between continents. Our results show the main admixture components in the Quilombos are African and European. Those estimates are in accordance with previous analyses for both uniparental and autosomal markers. PCA, structure analysis and ancestry estimates indicate a correlation between the extent of isolation and the degree of admixture in the Quilombos: Kalunga is the most isolated population and accordingly has a higher African admixture component (67.3%). Sacutiaba is the smallest and most impacted by migration, with the highest European component (46.8%). Mocambo neighbors a Native American population and therefore has the highest Amerindian contribution (12.2%). Our results are consistent with the history and demography of Quilombos. The heterogeneity observed in these populations stresses the genetic diversity that Latin American and Caribbean rural populations can have and reiterates the need to describe them in greater detail., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. Background: The adverse effects of yellow fever (YF) vaccine in dialysis patients are not well known. There is concern about the risks and benefits of the vaccine in immunocompromised patients living in endemic areas, particularly given the risk of resurgence of urban YF with the spread of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. The purpose of this study was to assess the coverage and safety of YF vaccine in chronic dialysis patients., Methods: A cross-sectional study of 130 chronic dialysis patients was performed. Data were collected on clinical characteristics and YF vaccine status. Patients not vaccinated against YF or without a booster vaccination within the last 10 years were referred to receive the vaccine, and adverse effects were monitored., Results: Previous vaccination was verified in 44 patients within the last 10 years and in 26 patients at more than 10 years ago, with no mention of adverse effects. Thirty-six patients had never been vaccinated and 24 had an unknown vaccination status. Of the total 86 patients referred for immunization, 45 actually received the YF vaccine, with 24.4% experiencing mild local adverse effects and 4.4% experiencing fever. No serious adverse effects attributable to YF vaccine were observed (anaphylaxis, neurological or viscerotropic disease)., Conclusions: YF vaccine coverage among hemodialysis patients is low, and the vaccine appeared to be safe in this population with a small sample size., (Copyright © 2016 The Authors. Objective: To present a straightforward, reproducible technique with the basic principle of preserving all available outer penile shaft skin and using this to cover the dorsal side of the penis. The DOuble LOngitudinal Megapreputium Incision TEchnique is presented in a step-by-step fashion., Materials and Methods: Six consecutive patients with a mean age of 13.3 months (range, 7-25) underwent this reconstruction between 2006 and 2011. The technique starts with 2 longitudinal incisions, the first on the ventral side, and the second on the dorsal side of the penis. After hinging the penile skin to the dorsal side, redundant inner preputial tissue is resected using diagonal incisions. Dartos is spared. A comparison with previously reported techniques and a concise review of existing literature are provided., Results: The final cosmetic results, after an initial period of edematous swelling of the ventral aspect of the penis, were good in all patients. The bilateral diagonal scars on the penile shaft became inconspicuous over time. Voiding normalized. Objective: To analyze the epidemiological profile of children and adolescents aged between 0 to 19 years, assisted by the emergency department of a City School Hospital in order to monitor the health care system of São Carlos, São Paulo, Southeast Brazil., Methods: This is a descriptive and cross-sectional study that collected data from medical records, from August 2008 to September 2009 (14 months). The random sample was taken from 15 days of each month, 50% of the total of 26,678 patients seen during that period of time, accounting for 13,339 medical records. The Epi-Info software was used to build the database; results were evaluated by descriptive statistical analysis., Results: Among the analyzed medical reports, 48.3% were female patients, 55% of the patients were aged between 0 and 4 years. Most of the children (95%) came by spontaneous demand. During that period, 41% of the population aged 0 to 19 years-old sought for only this type of health care. The most prevalent diseases were respiratory diseases, which showed 48.5% incidence during fall and winter. Most patients came from the north, northeast, and northwest regions of São Carlos, which have high-population density., Conclusions: The results showed a sad reality, with high spontaneous demand of children aged from zero to four years-old for pediatric emergency care. Most patients had not received prior care from other doctors. The health network situation indicates the need for urgent measures to strengthen the primary care assistance for basic health care centers and family physicians.

Chronic myeloid leukemia is a hematopoietic stem cell disorder that causes uncontrolled proliferation of white blood cells. Although the clinical and biological aspects are well documented, little is known about individual susceptibility to this disease. We conducted a case-control study analyzing the prevalence of the polymorphisms MTHFR C677T, MTHFR A1298C, del{GSTM1}, del{GSTT1}, and haptoglobin in 105 patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) and 273 healthy controls, using PCR-based methods. A significant association with risk of developing CML was found for MTHFR 1298AA (odds ratio (OR) = 1.794; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.14-2.83) and GSTM1 non-null (OR = 1.649; 95%CI = 1.05-2.6) genotypes, while MTHFR 1298AC (OR = 0.630; 95%CI = 0.40-0.99) and GSTM1 null (OR = 0.606; 95%CI = 0.21-0.77) genotypes significantly decreased this risk. There appeared to be selection for heterozygosity at the MTHFR 1298 locus. The considerable range of variation in this and other human populations may be a consequence of distinctive processes of natural selection and adaptation to variable environmental conditions. The Brazilian population is very mixed and heterogeneous; we found these two loci to be associated with CML in this population.

Context and Objective: Increased life expectancy has resulted in growing numbers of elderly patients undergoing heart surgery. This study aimed to identify changes in functional status among older adults undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting., Design and Setting: Prospective observational cohort study conducted at a level IV private hospital in Brazil., Methods: Patients were assessed using the Katz and Lawton scales and the Functional Independence Measure before admission, at hospital discharge and one month after discharge. Repeated-measurement analysis of variance was used., Results: Two patients died during hospitalization. Among the 31 patients included, the Functional Independence Measure ranged from 121.7 ± 7.4 (pre-admission) to 91.1 ± 20.5 (discharge) and 109.0 ± 21.7 (one month after discharge); the Katz scale from 5.92 ± 0.32 to 4.18 ± 1.04 and 5.13 ± 1.30; and the Lawton scale from 24.3 ± 4.6 to 12.8 ± 2.0 and 16.5 ± 4.6 (P = 0.0001). When subgroups with (18) and without (13) complications were compared, the Functional Independence Measure (P = 0.085) showed a trend, although not significantly, toward recovery one month after discharge. Delirium and blood transfusion were the intercurrent events found. There was a correlation between the scales and age (P = 0.008), APACHE II (P = 0.051), EuroSCORE (P = 0.064), intensive care unit stay (P = 0.024) and overall hospital length of stay (P = 0.040)., Conclusion: The Functional Independence Measure proved to be a promising tool for monitoring the functional status of elderly patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting, especially in the subgroup with complications.

Essential hypertension is a complex and multifactorial trait; genetic and environmental factors interact to produce the final phenotype. Studies have demonstrated association of hypertension with varied gene polymorphisms. However, demonstration of common genetic causes in the general population remains elusive. We investigated a possible association between hypertension and haptoglobin, angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE), glutathione S-transferases GSTM1 and GSTT1, MnSOD (Val9Ala), CAT (-21A/T), and GPX1 (Pro198Leu) gene polymorphisms in an urban Brazilian population group from Brasília. Although ACE has been reported to be one of the main polymorphisms associated with hypertension, we found no association with ACE's specific genotypes. However, a possible association with Hp1-1 and MnSOD Val/Ala genotypes suggests that, at least for the Brazilian population, polymorphisms related to oxidative stress should be more deeply investigated.

Background: Normal cellular metabolism is well established as the source of endogenous reactive oxygen species which account for the background levels of oxidative DNA damage detected in normal tissue. Hydrogen peroxide imposes an oxidative stress condition on cells that can result in DNA damage, leading to mutagenesis and cell death. Several potentially significant genetic variants related to oxidative stress have already been identified, and angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors have been reported as possible antioxidant agents that can reduce vascular oxidative stress in cardiovascular events., Methods: We investigate the influences of haptoglobin, manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD Val9Ala), catalase (CAT -21A/T), glutathione peroxidase 1 (GPx-1 Pro198Leu), ACE (I/D) and gluthatione S-transferases GSTM1 and GSTT1 gene polymorphisms against DNA damage and oxidative stress. These were induced by exposing leukocytes from peripheral blood of healthy humans (N = 135) to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and the effects were tested by comet assay. Blood samples were submitted to genotyping and comet assay (before and after treatment with H2O2 at 250 microM and 1 mM)., Results: After treatment with H2O2 at 250 microM, the GPx-1 polymorphism significantly influenced results of comet assay and a possible association of the Pro/Leu genotype with higher DNA damage was found. The highest or lowest DNA damage also depended on interaction between GPX-1/ACE and Hp/GSTM1T1 polymorphisms when hydrogen peroxide treatment increased oxidative stress., Conclusions: The GPx-1 polymorphism and the interactions between GPX-1/ACE and Hp/GSTM1T1 can be determining factors for DNA oxidation provoked by hydrogen peroxide, and thus for higher susceptibility to or protection against oxidative stress suffered by healthy individuals.

Physical training induces beneficial adaptation, whereas exhaustive exercises increase reactive oxygen-species generation, thereby causing oxidative damage in plasma and erythrocytes, fractions susceptible to lipid peroxidation. Pequi (Caryocar brasiliense Camb.) is a Brazilian Cerrado fruit containing a carotenoid-rich oil. The aim was to investigate the effects of pequi-oil on exercise-induced oxidative damage in plasma and erythrocytes, after running in the same environment and undergoing weekly training under the same conditions as to type, intensity and length. Evaluations were accomplished after outdoor running on flat land before and after ingestion of 400 mg pequi-oil capsules for 14 days. Blood samples were taken after running and submitted to TBARS assay and erythrogram analysis. Haptoglobin, MnSOD (Val9Ala), CAT (21A/T) and GPX1 (Pro198Leu) gene polymorphisms were priorly investigated, so as to estimate genetic influence The reduction in erythrocytes, hemoglobin and hematocrit after pequi-oil treatment was notably associated with higher plasma expansion. Except for MCHC (mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration) and RDW (red cell distribution width), the results were influenced by the polymorphisms studied. The best response to pequi-oil was presented by MnSOD Val/Val, CAT AA or AT genotypes and the GPX1 Pro allele. The significantly lower RDW and higher MHCH values were related to pequi-oil protective effects. Pequi oil, besides possessing other nutritional properties, showed protective blood effects.

Physical training induces beneficial adaptations; however, exhausting exercise increases reactive oxygen species generation, resulting in damage to DNA and tissues. Pequi (Caryocar brasiliense), a fruit of the Brazilian Cerrado, contains a carotenoid-rich oil. We investigated whether pequi oil had antioxidant effects in runners. Evaluations were made after outdoor races before and after ingestion of 400 mg pequi-oil capsules for 14 days. Blood samples were taken after races and submitted to comet and TBARS assays and biochemical analyses of creatine kinase (CK), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT). To determine if the protective effects of pequi-oil were influenced by antioxidant enzyme genotypes, MnSOD (-Val9Ala), CAT (-21A/T) and GPX1 (Pro198Leu) gene polymorphisms were also investigated. Pequi oil was efficient in reducing tissue injuries evaluated for AST and ALT, particularly in women, and in reducing DNA damages in both sexes. Except for CK levels, the results were influenced by MnSOD genotypes; heterozygous excess was related to less DNA damage, tissue injury and lipid peroxidation, besides presenting a better response to pequi oil against exercise-induced damage.

Kodamaea (Pichia) ohmeri is a yeast species that has not been reported to be a frequent cause of human infections. The current report describes a case of fungemia caused by K. ohmeri in a 3-year-old female patient hospitalized in the public hospital Maria Alice Fernandes, Natal, RN, Brazil. The patient had previously received antimicrobial therapy due to a peritoneal infection and nosocomial pneumonia, and had a central venous catheter implanted. Kodamaea ohmeri was isolated from blood and the tip of the catheter, 48 h after its implantation. The yeast was identified by standard microbiological methods and sequence analysis of the D1/D2 domains and the ITS 1 + 2 spacer regions of the ribosomal DNA. On CHROMagar Candida medium, the isolate showed a color change from pink to blue. The yeast was susceptible to amphotericin B, and liposomal AmB was used successfully to clear the infection.

Haptoglobin is a plasma hemoglobin-binding protein that limits iron loss during normal erythrocyte turnover and hemolysis, thereby preventing oxidative damage mediated by iron excess in the circulation. Haptoglobin polymorphism in humans, characterized by the Hp(*1) and Hp (*2) alleles, results in distinct phenotypes known as Hp1-1, Hp2-1 and Hp2-2, whose frequencies vary according to the ethnic origin of the population. The Hp(*1) allele has two subtypes, Hp (*1F) and Hp (*1S) , that also vary in their frequencies among populations worldwide. In this work, we examined the distribution frequencies of haptoglobin subtypes in three Brazilian population groups of different ethnicities. The haptoglobin genotypes of Kayabi Amerindians (n = 56), Kalunga Afro-descendants (n = 70) and an urban population (n = 132) were determined by allele-specific PCR. The Hp(*1F) allele frequency was highest in Kalunga (29.3%) and lowest in Kayabi (2.6%). The Hp(*1F)/Hp(*1S) allele frequency ratios were 0.6, 1.0 and 0.26 for the Kayabi, Kalunga and urban populations, respectively. This variation was attributable largely to the Hp(*1F) allele. However, despite the large variation in Hp(*1F) frequencies, results of F (ST) (0.0291) indicated slight genetic differentiation among subpopulations of the general Brazilian population studied here. This is the first Brazilian report of variations in the Hp(*1F) and Hp(*1S) frequencies among non-Amerindian Brazilians.

Human haptoglobin is classified into three major phenotypes: Hp1-1, Hp2-1 and Hp2-2; there are two autosomal alleles Hp*1 and Hp*2, and the Hp*1 allele has two subtypes, Hp*1F and Hp*1S. Haptoglobin acts as an antioxidant, preventing hemoglobin-driven oxidative damage. We used the comet assay to examine oxidative damage to DNA induced by hydrogen peroxide in human leukocytes; we also looked for differences in the antioxidant capacity of haptoglobin subtypes. Haptoglobin genotypes were determined through allele-specific polymerase chain reaction, visualized on a polyacrylamide gel. The Hp1-1 genotype had the least DNA damage; this indicates that Hp alleles differ in their protective effects against oxidative damage. Among Hp*1 alleles, Hp*1F was the most protective.

The maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) is the largest South American canid. Habitat loss and fragmentation, due to agricultural expansion and predatory hunting, are the main threats to this species. It is included in the official list of threatened wildlife species in Brazil, and is also protected by IUCN and CITES. Highly variable genetic markers such as microsatellites have the potential to resolve genetic relationships at all levels of the population structure (among individuals, demes or metapopulations) and also to identify the evolutionary unit for strategies for the conservation of the species. Tests were carried out to verify whether a class of highly polymorphic tetranucleotide repeats described for the domestic dog effectively amplifies DNA in the maned wolf. All five loci studied were amplified; however, one of these, was shown to be monomorphic in 69 maned wolf samples. The average allele number and estimated heterozygosity per polymorphic locus were 4.3 and 67%, respectively. The genetic variability found for this species, which is considered threatened with extinction, showed similar results when compared to studies of other canids.
