Water-based lubricating fluids (WBLFs), known for their significant environmental benefits, are the focus of this study. The properties of WBLFs directly influence lubricated mechanisms' longevity and operating efficiency. WBLFs are enhanced using additives, which must improve their properties and, at the same time, remain environmentally friendly. This study combines bis(2-hydroxyethyl) ammonium erucate protic ionic liquid and titanium oxide nanoparticles to formulate the hybrid additive. The lubricity was investigated using Alumina/Bearing steel and WC/Bearing steel friction pairs in a reciprocating ball-on-plate tribo-tester. The results show that protic ionic liquid can significantly improve lubricity and the corrosion-preventing ability of the base fluid. Applying a hybrid additive further improved the wear reduction ability in the WC/Bearing steel friction pair. However, the wear reduction ability was diminished when a hybrid additive was used to lubricate the Alumina/Bearing steel friction pair. The proposed lubricity improvement mechanism is based on forming an adsorption layer of ionic liquid molecules and rolling and tribo-sintering titanium oxide nanoparticles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For over two decades, ionic liquids have been among the most exciting lubrication topics. Ionic liquids were investigated by using them as neat lubricants and lubricity-enhancing additives. However, new and unique features were revealed by introducing new ionic liquids. This paper compares the tribological properties of two ionic liquids with the same trihexyltetradecylphosphonium [P 6,6,6,14] cation and different anions—dicyanamide [DCN] and bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)phosphinate. The widely investigated 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate [BMIM] [PF6] ionic liquid was used as a reference. The lubricity was comprehensively investigated using two testing modes: reciprocation in a ball-on-plate tribometer and continuous sliding in a ball-on-disc tribometer. The tests were performed at temperatures of 30 and 80 °C. The friction, wear, and film thickness were evaluated, and a worn surface analysis was conducted. It was found that in the case of reciprocation, anion has a significant effect on the lubricity. The difference was particularly evident when the results at two temperatures were compared. The ability to build a low-friction tribo-film was suggested as the primer source of lubricity. In the case of continuous sliding, the differences were not as noticeable. The objective of this study is to assess the proximate chemical composition, and the physical and techno-functional properties of blackberry pomace from different cultivars ('Polar', 'Orkan', 'Brzezina'). Blackberry pomace primarily comprises seeds and other parts, such as pulps/skins. It serves as a rich source of bioactive compounds, particularly anthocyanins, and demonstrates notable functional properties, including water holding capacity, oil holding capacity, swelling capacity, and various fiber fractions. Moreover, anthocyanin-rich fruits are interesting due to their health-promoting properties and intensive color. Total anthocyanin content (TAC) ranged from 113.82 mg 100 g−1 d.w. to 129.58 mg 100 g−1 d.w. in blackberry pomace. Fiber fractions, including ADF, NDF, lignin, and WSCs, exhibited significant variations among the different blackberry pomace cultivars as well as color. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aims to evaluate the tribological properties of two protic ionic liquids (PILs) under different tribological conditions as a sustainable alternative for mineral oil-based neat lubricants. The synthesis of PILs in this study uses a relatively simple and less expensive method. The Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy results help validate the synthesised PILs' formation. Further, their physicochemical and tribological properties were investigated. The PILs as neat lubricants were tested on a ball-on-plate reciprocating tribometer using bearing steel–bearing steel and bearing steel–aluminium alloy friction pairs at 30 °C and 80 °C. The results show that the investigated PILs significantly reduced the coefficient of friction and wear. The dodecylamine-based PILs performed better in friction and wear reduction than the other investigated lubricants. Featured Application: The investigated additives for water-based lubricating fluids could be used in applications where aqueous lubricants are employed. These could be hydraulic or metalworking applications. Lubrication is the primary solution to reduce friction and wear. However, conventional lubricants cause pollution when not properly disposed of or due to accidental leaks. Therefore, environmentally friendly lubricating fluids are welcome in any application where they can meet the performance requirements. This study suggests using coffee oil produced from spent coffee grounds to improve the lubricity of water-based lubricating fluid. Bis(2-hydroxyethyl)ammonium oleate protic ionic liquid facilitates the dispersion of coffee oil in water. Kinematic viscosity, wettability, corrosion prevention, and lubricity tests were performed to evaluate the tribological properties provided by these additives. It was observed that a higher amount of coffee oil could be dispersed with the introduction of a higher amount of protic ionic liquid. In this study, ten wt.% of coffee oil was successfully dispersed using one wt.% of protic ionic liquid. Introducing additives increased dispersions' viscosity, improved wettability, provided protection against corrosion, and reduced wear and friction. It was proposed that polar molecules of protic ionic liquid were responsible for most of the improvement, while coffee oil contributed by increasing viscosity. Featured Application: The investigated protic ionic liquid could be used as an additive in water-based lubricating fluids for hydraulic or metalworking applications. Recently, environmentally friendly lubricants and their additives have been of great interest. Using such lubricants can provide a few benefits, namely: nontoxicity and biodegradability when exposed to groundwater or soil. Moreover, renewable raw materials could be used to produce these lubricants. This study aims to synthesize bis (2-hydroxyethyl)ammonium erucate protic ionic liquid containing a renewable counterpart-erucic acid. The synthesis of bis (2-hydroxyethyl)ammonium erucate, its physical properties, solubility in the base lubricating fluid, and tribological properties were evaluated. The study shows that even though the investigated protic ionic liquid is liquid at room temperature, it has a very high kinematic viscosity, which drops when the temperature increases. Bis (2-hydroxyethyl)ammonium erucate can be dissolved in water up to 3 wt%. In this experimental study, biodiesel was synthesized from the salmon oil using the Lipozyme®RM IM (Bagsværd, Denmark) as a biocatalyst. Isoamyl alcohol was used as an acyl acceptor in the transesterification process. The aim of this study is to select the best process conditions, aiming to obtain the highest transesterification degree that meets the requirements of the EN 14214 standard. Response surface methodology (RSM) was used for statistical analysis and optimization of process parameters. A four-factor experimental design was modelled by central compositional design (CCD) to investigate the effects of biocatalyst concentration, isoamyl alcohol-to-oil molar ratio, temperature, and duration on transesterification degree. It was determined that the optimal parameters for biodiesel synthesis were the following: an enzyme concentration of 11% (wt. of oil mass); a process temperature of 45 °C; a process duration of 4 h; and an alcohol-to-oil molar ratio of 6:1. The transesterification degree of biodiesel reached 87.23%. The stepwise addition of isoamyl alcohol during the transesterification process further increased the degree of transesterification to 96.5%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Biodiesel can be produced both in homogeneous and heterogeneous ways. Heterogeneous synthesis allows to easily separate catalyst from esters. In this work, eggshells as a heterogeneous catalyst were used for triglyceride transesterification with 1-butanol. Response surface methodology was used for process optimization. It was obtained that eggshells are a suitable catalyst for transesterification processes. A longer process duration and higher catalyst amount have a high influence on ester yield. However, the amount of 1-butanol should not be maximized. Optimum transesterification reaction conditions were obtained when the process temperature was 110 °C, 1-butanol-to-oil molar ratio 11.3:1, eggshells amount 7.41 wt%, and process duration 11.81 h. Owing to their low cost and environmentally friendly nature, water-based lubricants have benefits over oil-based ones. However, the appropriate additive package is indispensable in improving its tribological properties. In the current study, we have investigated the friction and wear reduction ability of bis(2-hydroxyethyl) ammonium oleate protic ionic liquid (PIL) in a glycerol aqueous lubricating fluid. The tribo-tests were performed using a ruby–steel friction pair acting in reciprocation mode. The coefficient of friction and wear were the main characteristics of the evaluation. Analysis of the physical properties of the investigated lubricating samples and worn surface analysis were performed to reveal a more detailed picture. The study shows that the investigated PIL can significantly reduce friction and wear. The most suitable concentration of PIL was 0.5%, where friction and wear were reduced 2.6 and 15.8 times, respectively. Using the investigated PIL facilitates a sliding coefficient of friction as low as 0.039. It was hypothesized that the formation of the adsorption layer and metal soap was responsible for this. The aim of studies was to investigate the process of enzymatic interesterification of rapeseed oil with methyl formate and to determine the influence of three independent variables on the product yield. After evaluating the effectiveness of three enzymatic preparations, the industrial preparation Lipozyme TL IM was selected for the research. Using the surface response methodology, a model describing the dependence of the yield of rapeseed methyl esters on the molar ratio of methyl formate to oil, the amount of catalyst and the duration of the process was created. The following conditions were determined in which the highest yield of rapeseed oil methyl esters was obtained: molar ratio of methyl formate to oil 40:1, process duration 60 h and 14.57% of catalyst Lipozyme TL IM from the amount of oil. Under these conditions, an 81.79% yield of rapeseed oil methyl esters was obtained. Comparative studies of the physical and chemical properties of the product obtained during the interesterification process were performed and their compliance with the requirements of conventional biodiesel standard EN 14214 was evaluated. This study aims to evaluate the ability of raspberry and blackberry pomace to inhibit lipid oxidation and prolong the refrigerated storage of beef patties. Berry pomace was incorporated into beef patties at the concentration of 1, 3, and 5%. Packed patties were stored for 9 days at 4 °C temperature and the quality of the meat was evaluated on the 0, 3rd, 6th, and 9th day. The natural mass loss during storage, the pH as well as the lipid oxidation were evaluated by thiobarbituric acid-reactive substance (TBARS) method. GC was used to determine the amount of fatty acids and e-nose, based on ultrafast gas chromatography, was used for the determination of volatile organic compounds in beef patties before and after the storage. The highest mass loss during refrigerated storage was observed in the control beef patties, while the berry pomace absorbed water and reduced the loss. The pomace additive influenced the decrease in the patties pH during the storage. Berry pomace can be very effective in relation to lipid oxidation, and as little as 1% of berry pomace influenced the decrease in the TBAR's values in the patties stored for nine days by 3.06 and 2.42 times, depending on the pomace compared to the control patties. The use of berry pomace in meat products can reduce lipid oxidation, increase their fiber content and act as a thickener, as well as contribute to the usage of agri-food by-products. Environmentally friendly lubricants are preferred in many applications where groundwater or soil pollution is possible. The main purpose of the current study was to evaluate the possibility of beeswax use as a thickener for lubricating greases. European beeswax was used as a thickening material for the preparation of lubricating greases. Rapeseed oil and two mineral oils were used as base oils. The consistency, dropping point temperature, and tribological properties of the prepared lubricating greases were investigated and compared with conventional soap-thickened greases. The prepared greases exhibited good tribological properties, especially the rapeseed-oil-based grease. However, tribological properties of conventional lubricating grease were superior to prepared ones. The weakness of the prepared lubricating greases is their narrow working temperature range. Chemical and physical properties (density, kinematic viscosity, flash point, copper strip corrosion, calorific value) of multicomponent biofuel blends, containing rapeseed oil butyl or methyl esters, biobutanol and fossil diesel fuel are discussed in this paper. Ester, water and partial glycerides contents were determinated in multicomponent biofuel blends. These properties were compared with the same properties of pure biodiesel (rapeseed oil butyl and methyl esters) and pure diesel fuel. As there are no standards for blends fuel, containing more than 7  of biocomponents, that is why, density and viscosity were evaluated according standards EN 14214 and EN 590. It is determined that the addition of butanol and rapeseed oil butyl esters should improve the cold flow properties, such as cloud point and cold filter plugging point. As rapeseed oil butyl esters were produced from high acidity rapeseed oil (4%), much attention was deviated for oxidation stability and acidity of pure rapeseed oil butylesters and it blends with butanol and diesel fuel. Abstract: Environmentally friendly lubricants are desirable in many applications in which water or soil pollution is expected. The use of natural additives can enhance the renewability of environmentally friendly lubricants and makes them more attractive for users. The main purpose of this study was to investigate sage and thyme extracts as natural antioxidants in rapeseed oil. Their efficiency was investigated under accelerated oxidation and storage conditions and was estimated according to induction period, peroxide and acid number variation, kinematic viscosity and viscosity index changes, and tribological and corrosion properties. The observed results show that sage and thyme extracts have good oxidation stabilisation properties; therefore, the modification of rapeseed oil with these extracts can improve the oxidation stability of rapeseed oil both in storage and in use. This article examines opportunities of enzyme application during the production of biodiesel from microalgae oil by its transesterification in the mixture with mineral diesel fuel. The oil and mineral diesel fuel ratio in the reaction mixture enabled a yield of 7% ester content in the mixture. Effectiveness tests were conducted on seven industrial lipases, and Lipozyme TL IM was selected as the most effective lipase for further optimization. The process of algae oil transesterification with ethanol was optimized by applying response surface methodology. The interactions and impacts of the following independent variables on the transesterification yield were evaluated: ethanol and oil molar ratio, process duration, lipase content, and temperature. Optimum conditions were determined: a temperature of 30 °C, 13.26% biocatalyst (from the oil content), an ethanol and oil molar ratio of 4.54:1, and a process duration of 13 h.
