Abstract The use of repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) in treating major depressive disorder (MDD) is increasingly being explored in precision medicine. However, there’s a notable lack of understanding of the underlying neurobiological effects, which limits our ability to correlate specific imaging features with treatment efficacy. As one possible neurobiological mechanism, clinical research has already shown that in MDD, lower norepinephrine release in the locus coeruleus (LC) triggers depressive symptoms, and pharmacological approaches that block norepinephrine reuptake boost its levels, easing depression. Surprisingly, the LC has not received a more pronounced focus in contemporary rTMS research. This study investigates the role of the LC in MDD and its response to high-frequency (HF)-rTMS using 18FDG-PET imaging. We compared LC metabolic connectivity between MDD patients (n = 43) and healthy controls (n = 32). Additionally, we evaluated the predictive value of LC connectivity for HF-rTMS treatment outcomes and examined post-treatment changes in LC metabolic connectivity. Our findings revealed significant differences in LC metabolic connectivity between MDD patients and controls. Baseline LC metabolic connectivity did not predict HF-rTMS treatment outcomes. However, post-treatment analyses showed a significant correlation between improved clinical outcomes and attenuation of LC metabolic connectivity in regions associated with cognitive control and the default mode network. Notably, a reduction in state anxiety moderated this relationship, highlighting the role of anxiety in HF-rTMS efficacy for MDD treatment. Our findings suggest that LC metabolic connectivity, influenced by state anxiety levels, may be crucial in HF-rTMS efficacy, offering further insights for personalized MDD treatment strategies.

Phasic cardiac vagal activity (CVA), reflecting ongoing, moment-to-moment psychophysiological adaptations to environmental changes, can serve as a predictor of individual difference in executive function, particularly executive performance. However, the relationship between phasic CVA and executive function demands requires further validation because of previous inconsistent findings. Moreover, it remains unclear what types of phasic changes of CVA may be adaptive in response to heightened executive demands. This study used the standard N-back task to induce different levels of working memory (WM) load and combined functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) with a multipurpose polygraph to investigate the variations of CVA and its interactions with cognitive and prefrontal responses as executive demands increased in fifty-two healthy young subjects. Our results showed phasic decreases in CVA as WM load increased (t (51) = -3.758, p < 0.001, Cohen's d = 0.526). Furthermore, phasic changes of CVA elicited by increased executive demands moderated the association of cognitive and cerebral hemodynamic variations in the prefrontal cortex (B = 0.038, SE = 0.014, p < 0.05). Specifically, as executive demands increased, individuals with larger phasic CVA withdrawal showed a positive relationship between cognitive and hemodynamic variations in the prefrontal cortex (β = 0.281, p = 0.031). No such significant relationship was observed in individuals with smaller phasic CVA withdrawal. The current findings demonstrate a decrease in CVA with increasing executive demands and provide empirical support for the notion that a larger phasic CVA withdrawal can be considered adaptive in situations requiring high executive function demands.

Abstract Anxiety and fear are dysfunctional behaviors commonly observed in domesticated dogs. Although dogs and humans share psychopathological similarities, little is known about how dysfunctional fear behaviors are represented in brain networks in dogs diagnosed with anxiety disorders. A combination of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and graph theory was used to investigate the underlying structural connections of dysfunctional anxiety in anxious dogs and compared with healthy dogs with normal behavior. The degree of anxiety was assessed using the Canine Behavioral Assessment & Research Questionnaire (C-BARQ), a widely used, validated questionnaire for abnormal behaviors in dogs. Anxious dogs showed significantly decreased clustering coefficient ( $${C}_{p}$$ C p ), decreased global efficiency ( $${E}_{glob}$$ E glob ), and increased small-worldness (σ) when compared with healthy dogs. The nodal parameters that differed between the anxious dogs and healthy dogs were mainly located in the posterior part of the brain, including the occipital lobe, posterior cingulate gyrus, hippocampus, mesencephalon, and cerebellum. Furthermore, the nodal degree ( $${K}_{i}$$ K i ) of the left cerebellum was significantly negatively correlated with “excitability” in the C-BARQ of anxious dogs. These findings could contribute to the understanding of a disrupted brain structural connectome underlying the pathological mechanisms of anxiety-related disorders in dogs.

Sensitivity to criticism, which can be defined as a negative evaluation that a person receives from someone else, is considered a risk factor for the development of psychiatric disorders in adolescents. They may be more vulnerable to social evaluation than adults and exhibit more inadequate emotion regulation strategies such as rumination. The neural network involved in dealing with criticism in adolescents may serve as a biomarker for vulnerability to depression. However, the directions of the functional interactions between the brain regions within this neural network in adolescents are still unclear. In this study, 64 healthy adolescents (aged 14 to 17 years) were asked to listen to a series of self-referential auditory segments, which included negative (critical), positive (praising), and neutral conditions, during fMRI scanning. Dynamic Causal Modeling (DCM) with Parametric Empirical Bayesian (PEB) analysis was performed to map the interactions within the neural network that was engaged during the processing of these segments. Three regions were identified to form the interaction network: the left pregenual anterior cingulate cortex (pgACC), the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), and the right precuneus (preCUN). We quantified the modulatory effects of exposure to criticism and praise on the effective connectivity between these brain regions. Being criticized was found to significantly inhibit the effective connectivity from the preCUN to the DLPFC. Adolescents who scored high on the Perceived Criticism Measure (PCM) showed less inhibition of the preCUN-to-DLPFC connectivity when being criticized, which may indicate that they required more engagement of the Central Executive Network (which includes the DLPFC) to sufficiently disengage from negative self-referential processing. Furthermore, the inhibitory connectivity from the DLPFC to the pgACC was strengthened by exposure to praise as well as criticism, suggesting a recruitment of cognitive control over emotional responses when dealing with positive and negative evaluative feedback. Our novel findings contribute to a more profound understanding of how criticism affects the adolescent brain and can help to identify potential biomarkers for vulnerability to develop mood disorders before or during adulthood.

Abstract Background This study investigates the effects of accelerated high-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (aHF-rTMS), applied to the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), on locus coeruleus (LC) functional connectivity in the treatment of refractory medication-resistant major depression (MRD). Methods We studied 12 antidepressant-free refractory MRD patients, focusing on how aHF-rTMS affects the LC, a central component of the brain’s noradrenergic system and key to mood regulation and stress response. Results A stronger decrease in LC functional connectivity following aHF-rTMS treatment resulted in better clinical improvement. We observed such LC functional connectivity decreases with several brain regions, including the superior frontal gyrus, precentral gyrus, middle occipital gyrus, and cerebellum. Moreover, our exploratory analyses hint at a possible role for E-field modeling in forecasting clinical outcomes. Additional analyses suggest potential genetic and dopaminergic factors influencing changes in LC functional connectivity in relation to clinical response. Conclusions The findings of this study underscore the pivotal role of the LC in orchestrating higher cognitive functions through its extensive connections with the prefrontal cortices, facilitating decision-making, influencing attention, and addressing depressive rumination. Additionally, the observed enhancement in LC-(posterior) cerebellar connectivity not only highlights the cerebellum’s role in moderating clinical outcomes through noradrenergic system modulation but also suggests its potential as a predictive marker for aHF-rTMS efficacy. These results reveal new insights into the neural mechanisms of refractory depression and suggest therapeutic targets for enhancing noradrenergic activity, thereby addressing both cognitive and psychomotor symptoms associated with the disorder.

BackgroundAs part of repetitive negative thinking (RNT), rumination is a maladaptive cognitive response style to stress or negative mood which can increase the risk of depression and may prohibit complete recovery. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) both proved to be effective in decreasing rumination. However, the combined effects of tDCS and CBT interventions on rumination have not yet been explored. The first aim of this pilot study is to investigate whether the combination of tDCS and CBT has an accumulating positive effect on modulating state rumination. The second aim is to assess the feasibility and safety profile of the proposed combined approach.MethodSeventeen adults aged 32–60 years, suffering from RNT, were referred by their primary care professional to participate in an 8-week group intervention for RNT (“Drop It”) comprising 8 sessions of CBT. Before each CBT session, patients underwent one double-blinded prefrontal active (2 mA for 20 min) or sham tDCS (anode over F3, cathode over the right supraorbital region) combined with an internal cognitive attention task focused on individual RNT, i.e., online tDCS priming. During each session, the Brief State Rumination Inventory was used to assess state rumination.ResultsA mixed effects model analysis revealed no significant differences between the stimulation conditions, weekly sessions, or their interaction in terms of state rumination scores.ConclusionOverall, the combination of online tDCS priming followed by group CBT was found to be safe and feasible. On the other hand, no significant additional effects of this combined approach on state rumination were established. Although our pilot study may have been too small to find significant clinical effects, future larger RCT studies on combined tDCS-CBT treatment protocols may reevaluate the selection of internal cognitive attention tasks and more objective neurophysiological measurements, consider the optimal timing of the combination (concurrently or sequentially), or may add additional tDCS sessions when following CBT.

Background: Accelerated intermittent Theta Burst Stimulation (aiTBS) has been put forward as an effective treatment to alleviate depressive symptoms. Baseline functional connectivity (FC) patterns between the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and the subgenual anterior cortex (sgACC) have gained a lot of attention as a potential biomarker for response. However, arterial spin labeling (ASL) - measuring regional cerebral blood flow - may allow a more straightforward physiological interpretation of such interregional functional connections. Objectives: We investigated whether baseline covariance perfusion connectivity between the individually stimulated left DLPFC targets and sgACC could predict meaningful clinical outcome. Considering that individual characteristics may influence efficacy prediction, all patients were also assessed with the Behavioral Inhibition System/Behavioral Activation System (BIS/BAS) scale. Methods: After baseline ASL scanning, forty-one medication-resistant depressed patients received twenty sessions of neuronavigated left DLPFC aiTBS in an accelerated sham-controlled crossover fashion, where all stimulation sessions were spread over four days (Trial registration: http://clinicaltrials.gov/show/NCT01832805). Results: Stronger individual baseline interregional covariance perfusion connectivity patterns predicted response and/or remission. Furthermore, responders and remitters with higher BIS scores displayed stronger baseline interregional perfusion connections. Conclusions: Targeting the left DLPFC with aiTBS based on personal structural imaging data only may not be the most optimal method to enhance meaningful antidepressant responses. Individual baseline interregional perfusion connectivity could be an important added brain imaging method for individual optimization of more valid stimulation targets within the left DLPFC. Additional therapies dealing with behavioral inhibition may be warranted.

Early detection in the development of a Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) could guide earlier clinical interventions. Although MDD can begin at a younger age, most people have their first episode in young adulthood. The underlying pathophysiological mechanisms relating to such an increased risk are not clear. The posterior cingulate cortex (PCC), exhibiting high levels of brain connectivity and metabolic activity, plays a pivotal role in the pathological mechanism underlying MDD. In the current study, we used the (F-18) fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) to measure metabolic covariance connectivity of the PCC and investigated its association with depression symptomatology evaluated by the Centre for Epidemiological Studies Depression Inventory—Revised (CESD-R) among 27 healthy individuals aged between 18 and 23 years. A significant negative correlation has been observed between CESD-R scale scores and the PCC metabolic connectivity with the anterior cingulate, medial prefrontal cortex, inferior and middle frontal gyrus, as well as the insula. Overall, our findings suggest that the neural correlates of depressive symptomatology in healthy young adults without a formal diagnosis involve the metabolic connectivity of the PCC. Our findings may have potential implications for early identification and intervention in people at risk of developing depression.

The hemodynamic response function (HRF) greatly influences the intra- and inter-subject variability of brain activation and connectivity, and might confound the estimation of temporal precedence in connectivity analyses, making its estimation necessary for a correct interpretation of neuroimaging studies. Additionally, the HRF shape itself is a useful local measure. However, most algorithms for HRF estimation are specific for task-related fMRI data, and only a few can be directly applied to resting-state protocols. Here we introduce rsHRF, a Matlab and Python toolbox that implements HRF estimation and deconvolution from the resting-state BOLD signal. We first provide an overview of the main algorithm, practical implementations, and then demonstrate the feasibility and usefulness of rsHRF by validation experiments with a publicly available resting-state fMRI dataset. We also provide tools for statistical analyses and visualization. We believe that this toolbox may significantly contribute to a better analysis and understanding of the components and variability of BOLD signals.

Background: Frequent exposure to criticism is a known risk factor for various adult psychiatric disorders. Adolescents may be even more vulnerable to (parental) criticism, as their imbalanced brain maturation makes them prone to stronger mood changes and less effective emotional regulation. Identifying which adolescent subgroups are more vulnerable than others could be of great clinical relevance. Perceived criticism (PC) and self-criticism (SC), two related but distinct traits, could well be crucial vulnerability factors.Hypotheses: After exposure to criticism during fMRI scanning, rapid changes in amygdalar functional connectivity (FC) with other brain areas involved in emotion regulation and social cognitive processing will occur. These changes will depend on trait moderators, such as the adolescents' proneness to (a) perceive others as critical of them (PC) or (b) perceive themselves positively or negatively (SC).Methods: Sixty-four healthy 14–17-year-olds were exposed to a series of auditory comments. Changes in mood states were assessed based on the Profile of Mood States (POMS) prior to and after exposure to these segments. Pre- and post-experiment FC of the left and right amygdalae with other brain areas were also measured. Correlates between FC changes and psychometric measures—including the perceived criticism measure (PCM) and self-perception profile for adolescents (SPPA)—were assessed.Results: First, after being criticized, FC increases of the left amygdala seed region with brain areas related to sustained emotional processing were found, but no right amygdalar FC changes. Second, there was a significant positive partial correlation between individual PCM scores and FC changes between the left amygdala seed region and the left precuneus and left superior parietal cortex, both part of the default mode network.Conclusion: Exposure to criticism resulted in a rapid negative mood change accompanied by an increase in FC between the left amygdala and regions known to be involved in sustained emotional processing, but no right amygdalar FC changes. Furthermore, higher PC but not SC was correlated with stronger left amygdalar FC increases with these regions, suggesting an elevated vulnerability for disturbed emotional processing, as observed in mood disorders, in healthy adolescents with higher PCM scores.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), being an indirect measure of brain activity, is mathematically defined as a convolution of the unmeasured latent neural signal and the hemodynamic response function (HRF). The HRF is known to vary across the brain and across individuals, and it is modulated by neural as well as non-neural factors. Three parameters characterize the shape of the HRF, which is obtained by performing deconvolution on resting-state fMRI data: response height, time-to-peak and full-width at half-max. The data provided here, obtained from 47 healthy adults, contains these three HRF parameters at every voxel in the brain, as well as HRF parameters from the default-mode network (DMN). In addition, we have provided functional connectivity (FC) data from the same DMN regions, obtained for two cases: data with deconvolution (HRF variability minimized) and data with no deconvolution (HRF variability corrupted). This would enable researchers to compare regional changes in HRF with corresponding FC differences, to assess the impact of HRF variability on FC. Importantly, the data was obtained in a 7T MRI scanner. While most fMRI studies are conducted at lower field strengths, like 3T, ours is the first study to report HRF data obtained at 7T. FMRI data at ultra-high fields contains larger contributions from small vessels, consequently HRF variability is lower for small vessels at higher field strengths. This implies that findings made from this data would be more conservative than from data acquired at lower fields, such as 3T. Results obtained with this data and further interpretations are available in our recent research study (Rangaprakash et al., in press) [1]. This is a valuable dataset for studying HRF variability in conjunction with FC, and for developing the HRF profile in healthy individuals, which would have direct implications for fMRI data analysis, especially resting-state connectivity modeling. This is the first public HRF data at 7T.

Abstract Red/near‐infrared (NIR) emissive carbon nanodots (CNDs) with photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield (QY) of 57% are prepared via an in situ solvent‐free carbonization strategy for the first time. 1‐Photon and 2‐photon cellular imaging is demonstrated by using the CNDs as red/NIR fluorescence agent due to the high PL QY and low biotoxicity. Further study shows that the red/NIR CNDs exhibit multiphoton excited (MPE) upconversion fluorescence under excitation of 800–2000 nm, which involves three NIR windows (NIR‐I, 650–950 nm; NIR‐II, 1100–1350; NIR‐III, 1600–1870 nm). 2‐Photon, 3‐photon, and 4‐photon excited fluorescence of the CNDs under excitation of different wavelengths is achieved. This study develops an in situ solvent‐free carbonization method for efficient red/NIR emissive CNDs with MPE upconversion fluorescence, which may push forward the application of the CNDs in bioimaging.

The neurovisceral integration model has shown a key role of the amygdala in neural circuits underlying heart rate variability (HRV) modulation, and suggested that reciprocal connections from amygdala to brain regions centered on the central autonomic network (CAN) are associated with HRV. To provide neuroanatomical evidence for these theoretical perspectives, the current study used covariance analysis of MRI-based gray matter volume (GMV) to map structural covariance network of the amygdala, and then determined whether the interregional structural correlations related to individual differences in HRV. The results showed that covariance patterns of the amygdala encompassed large portions of cortical (e.g., prefrontal, cingulate, and insula) and subcortical (e.g., striatum, hippocampus, and midbrain) regions, lending evidence from structural covariance analysis to the notion that the amygdala was a pivotal node in neural pathways for HRV modulation. Importantly, participants with higher resting HRV showed increased covariance of amygdala to dorsal medial prefrontal cortex and anterior cingulate cortex (dmPFC/dACC) extending into adjacent medial motor regions [i.e., pre-supplementary motor area (pre-SMA)/SMA], demonstrating structural covariance of the prefrontal-amygdala pathways implicated in HRV, and also implying that resting HRV may reflect the function of neural circuits underlying cognitive regulation of emotion as well as facilitation of adaptive behaviors to emotion. Our results, thus, provide anatomical substrates for the neurovisceral integration model that resting HRV may index an integrative neural network which effectively organizes emotional, cognitive, physiological and behavioral responses in the service of goal-directed behavior and adaptability.

BACKGROUND: The left and right amygdalae are key regions distinctly involved in emotion-regulation processes. Individual differences, such as personality features, may affect the implicated neurocircuits. The lateralized amygdala affective processing linked with the temperament dimension Harm Avoidance (HA) remains poorly understood. Resting state functional connectivity imaging (rsFC) may provide more insight into these neuronal processes. METHODS: In 56 drug-naive healthy female subjects, we have examined the relationship between the personality dimension HA on lateralized amygdala rsFC. RESULTS: Across all subjects, left and right amygdalae were connected with distinct regions mainly within the ipsilateral hemisphere. Females scoring higher on HA displayed stronger left amygdala rsFC with ventromedial prefrontal cortical (vmPFC) regions involved in affective disturbances. In high HA scorers, we also observed stronger right amygdala rsFC with the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC), which is implicated in negative affect regulation. CONCLUSIONS: In healthy females, left and right amygdalae seem implicated in distinct mPFC brain networks related to HA and may represent a vulnerability marker for sensitivity to stress and anxiety (disorders).

Parkinson's disease (PD) is mainly characterized by dopamine depletion of the cortico-basal ganglia (CBG) motor circuit. Given that dopamine dysfunction could affect functional brain network efficiency, the present study utilized resting-state fMRI (rs-fMRI) and graph theoretical approach to investigate the topological efficiency changes of the CBG motor network in patients with PD during a relatively hypodopaminergic state (12 hours after a last dose of dopamimetic treatment). We found that PD compared with controls had remarkable decreased efficiency in the CBG motor network, with the most pronounced changes observed in rostral supplementary motor area (pre-SMA), caudal SMA (SMA-proper), primary motor cortex (M1), primary somatosensory cortex (S1), thalamus (THA), globus pallidus (GP), and putamen (PUT). Furthermore, reduced efficiency in pre-SMA, M1, THA and GP was significantly correlated with Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) motor scores in PD patients. Together, our results demonstrate that individuals with PD appear to be less effective at information transfer within the CBG motor pathway, which provides a novel perspective on neurobiological explanation for the motor symptoms in patients. These findings are in line with the pathophysiology of PD, suggesting that network efficiency metrics may be used to identify and track the pathology of PD.

Psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES) are paroxysmal behaviors that resemble epileptic seizures but lack abnormal electrical activity. Recent studies suggest aberrant functional connectivity involving specific brain regions in PNES. Little is known, however, about alterations of topological organization of whole-brain functional and structural connectivity networks in PNES. We constructed functional connectivity networks from resting-state functional MRI signal correlations and structural connectivity networks from diffusion tensor imaging tractography in 17 PNES patients and 20 healthy controls. Graph theoretical analysis was employed to compute network properties. Moreover, we investigated the relationship between functional and structural connectivity networks. We found that PNES patients exhibited altered small-worldness in both functional and structural networks and shifted towards a more regular (lattice-like) organization, which could serve as a potential imaging biomarker for PNES. In addition, many regional characteristics were altered in structural connectivity network, involving attention, sensorimotor, subcortical and default-mode networks. These regions with altered nodal characteristics likely reflect disease-specific pathophysiology in PNES. Importantly, the coupling strength of functional-structural connectivity was decreased and exhibited high sensitivity and specificity to differentiate PNES patients from healthy controls, suggesting that the decoupling strength of functional-structural connectivity might be an important characteristic reflecting the mechanisms of PNES. This is the first study to explore the altered topological organization in PNES combining functional and structural connectivity networks, providing a new way to understand the pathophysiological mechanisms of PNES.

A network approach to brain and dynamics opens new perspectives towards understanding of its function. The functional connectivity from functional MRI recordings in humans is widely explored at large scale, and recently also at the voxel level. The networks of dynamical directed connections are far less investigated, in particular at the voxel level. To reconstruct full brain effective connectivity network and study its topological organization, we present a novel approach to multivariate Granger causality which integrates information theory and the architecture of the dynamical network to efficiently select a limited number of variables. The proposed method aggregates conditional information sets according to community organization, allowing to perform Granger causality analysis avoiding redundancy and overfitting even for high-dimensional and short datasets, such as time series from individual voxels in fMRI. We for the first time depicted the voxel-wise hubs of incoming and outgoing information, called Granger causality density (GCD), as a complement to previous repertoire of functional and anatomical connectomes. Analogies with these networks have been presented in most part of default mode network; while differences suggested differences in the specific measure of centrality. Our findings could open the way to a new description of global organization and information influence of brain function. With this approach is thus feasible to study the architecture of directed networks at the voxel level and individuating hubs by investigation of degree, betweenness and clustering coefficient.

Exploring topological properties of human brain network has become an exciting topic in neuroscience research. Large-scale structural and functional brain networks both exhibit a small-world topology, which is evidence for global and local parallel information processing. Meanwhile, resting state networks (RSNs) underlying specific biological functions have provided insights into how intrinsic functional architecture influences cognitive and perceptual information processing. However, topological properties of single RSNs remain poorly understood. Here, we have two hypotheses: i) each RSN also has optimized small-world architecture; ii) topological properties of RSNs related to perceptual and higher cognitive processes are different. To test these hypotheses, we investigated the topological properties of the default-mode, dorsal attention, central-executive, somato-motor, visual and auditory networks derived from resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We found small-world topology in each RSN. Furthermore, small-world properties of cognitive networks were higher than those of perceptual networks. Our findings are the first to demonstrate a topological fractionation between perceptual and higher cognitive networks. Our approach may be useful for clinical research, especially for diseases that show selective abnormal connectivity in specific brain networks.

Method: Seventeen adults aged 32-60 years, suffering from RNT, were referred by their primary care professional to participate in an 8-week group intervention for RNT ("Drop It") comprising 8 sessions of CBT. Before each CBT session, patients underwent one double-blinded prefrontal active (2 mA for 20 min) or sham tDCS (anode over F3, cathode over the right supraorbital region) combined with an internal cognitive attention task focused on individual RNT, i.e., online tDCS priming. During each session, the Brief State Rumination Inventory was used to assess state rumination. Results: A mixed effects model analysis revealed no significant differences between the stimulation conditions, weekly sessions, or their interaction in terms of state rumination scores. Conclusion: Overall, the combination of online tDCS priming followed by group CBT was found to be safe and feasible. On the other hand, no significant additional effects of this combined approach on state rumination were established. Although our pilot study may have been too small to find significant clinical effects, future larger RCT studies on combined tDCS-CBT treatment protocols may reevaluate the selection of internal cognitive attention tasks and more objective neurophysiological measurements, consider the optimal timing of the combination (concurrently or sequentially), or may add additional tDCS sessions when following CBT. A new velocity map imaging spectrometer is constructed for molecular reaction dynamics studies using time-resolved photoelectron/ion spectroscopy method. By combining a kHz pulsed valve and an ICCD camera,this velocity map imaging spectrometer can be run at a repetition rate of 1 kHz,totally compatible with the fs Ti:Sapphire laser system,facilitating time-resolved studies in gas phase which are usually time-consuming. Time-resolved velocity map imaging study of NH3 photodissociation at 200 nm was performed and the time-resolved total kinetic energy release spectrum of H+NH2 products provides rich information about the dissociation dynamics of NH3. Background: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) has been documented to influence striatal and orbitofrontal dopaminergic activity implicated in reward processing. However, the exact neuropsychological mechanisms of how DLPFC stimulation may affect the reward system and how trait hedonic capacity may interact with the effects remains to be elucidated. Objective: In this sham-controlled study in healthy individuals, we investigated the effects of a single session of neuronavigated intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS) on reward responsiveness, as well as the influence of trait hedonic capacity. Methods: We used a randomized crossover single session iTBS design with an interval of 1 week. We assessed reward responsiveness using a rewarded probabilistic learning task and measured individual trait hedonic capacity (the ability to experience pleasure) with the temporal experience of pleasure scale questionnaire. Results: As expected, the participants developed a response bias toward the most rewarded stimulus (rich stimulus). Reaction time and accuracy for the rich stimulus were respectively shorter and higher as compared to the less rewarded stimulus (lean stimulus). Active or sham stimulation did not seem to influence the outcome. However, when taking into account individual trait hedonic capacity, we found an early significant increase in the response bias only after active iTBS. The higher the individual's trait hedonic capacity, the more the response bias toward the rich stimulus increased after the active stimulation. Conclusion: When taking into account trait hedonic capacity, one active iTBS session over the left DLPFC improved reward responsiveness in healthy male participants with higher hedonic capacity. Brain imaging studies have consistently shown subgenual Anterior Cingulate Cortical (sgACC) involvement in emotion processing. catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) Val158 and Met158 polymorphisms may influence such emotional brain processes in specific ways. Given that resting-state fMRI (rsfMRI) may increase our understanding on brain functioning, we integrated genetic and rsfMRI data and focused on sgACC functional connections. No studies have yet investigated the influence of the COMT Val 158Met polymorphism (rs4680) on sgACC resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) in healthy individuals. A homogeneous group of 61 Caucasian right-handed healthy female university students, all within the same age range, underwent rsfMRI. Compared to Met158 homozygotes, Val158 allele carriers displayed significantly stronger rsFC between the sgACC and the left parahippocampal gyrus, ventromedial parts of the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG), and the nucleus accumbens (NAc). On the other hand, compared to Val158 homozygotes, we found in Met158 allele carriers stronger sgACC rsFC with the medial frontal gyrus (MFG), more in particular the anterior parts of the medial orbitofrontal cortex. Although we did not use emotional or cognitive tasks, our sgACC rsFC results point to possible distinct differences in emotional and cognitive processes between Val158 and Met158 allele carriers.
