Abstract

A massless particle beyond the Standard Model is searched for in the two-body decay Σ+→p+invisible using (1.0087±0.0044)×1010 J/ψ events collected at a center-of-mass energy of s=3.097GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. No significant signal is observed, and the upper limit on the branching fraction B(Σ+→p+invisible) is determined to be 3.2×10−5 at the 90% confidence level. This is the first search for a flavor-changing neutral current process with missing energy in hyperon decays which plays an important role in constraining new physics models.

2. DNA methylation promotes the expression of PPARγ transcript 1 at least in part by preventing NRF1 binding to the promoter P1 of chicken PPARγ gene

Abstract

ABSTRACT: Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) is a master regulator of adipogenesis. Our previous study revealed that chicken PPARγ has 3 alternative promoters named as P1, P2, and P3, and the DNA methylation of promoter P3 was negatively associated with PPARγ mRNA expression in abdominal adipose tissue (AAT). However, the methylation status of promoters P1 and P2 is unclear. Here we assessed promoter P1 methylation status in AAT of Northeast Agricultural University broiler lines divergently selected for abdominal fat content (NEAUHLF). The results showed that promoter P1 methylation differed in AAT between the lean and fat lines of NEAUHLF at 7 wk of age (p < 0.05), and AAT expression of PPARγ transcript 1 (PPARγ1), which was derived from the promoter P1, was greatly higher in fat line than in lean line at 2 and 7 wk of age. The results of the correlation analysis showed that P1 methylation was positively correlated with PPARγ1 expression at 7 wk of age (Pearson's r = 0.356, p = 0.0242), suggesting P1 methylation promotes PPARγ1 expression. To explore the underlying molecular mechanism of P1 methylation on PPARγ1 expression, bioinformatics analysis, dual-luciferase reporter assay, pyrosequencing, and electrophoresis mobility shift assay (EMSA) were performed. The results showed that transcription factor NRF1 repressed the promoter activity of the unmethylated P1, but not the methylated P1. Of all the 4 CpGs (CpG48, CpG49, CpG50, and CpG51), which reside within or nearby the NRF1 binding sites of the P1, only CpG49 methylation in AAT was remarkably higher in the fat line than in lean line at 7 wk of age (3.18 to 0.57, p < 0.05), and CpG49 methylation was positively correlated with PPARγ1 expression (Pearson's r = 0.3716, p = 0.0432). Furthermore, EMSA showed that CpG49 methylation reduced the binding of NRF1 to the P1. Taken together, our findings illustrate that P1 methylation promotes PPARγ1 expression at least in part by preventing NRF1 from binding to the promoter P1.

Abstract

We use a bulk acoustic wave resonator to demonstrate coherent control of the excited orbital states in a diamond nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center at cryogenic temperature. Coherent quantum control is an essential tool for understanding and mitigating decoherence. Moreover, characterizing and controlling orbital states is a central challenge for quantum networking, where optical coherence is tied to orbital coherence. We study resonant multiphonon orbital Rabi oscillations in both the frequency and time domain, extracting the strength of the orbital-phonon interactions and the coherence of the acoustically driven orbital states. We reach the strong-driving limit, where the physics is dominated by the coupling induced by the acoustic waves. We find agreement between our measurements, quantum master-equation simulations, and a Landau-Zener transition model in the strong-driving limit. Using perturbation theory, we derive an expression for the orbital Rabi frequency versus the acoustic drive strength that is nonperturbative in the drive strength and agrees well with our measurements for all acoustic powers. Motivated by continuous-wave spin-resonance-based decoherence protection schemes, we model the orbital decoherence and find good agreement between our model and our measured few-to-several-nanoseconds orbital decoherence times. We discuss the outlook for orbital decoherence protection.

4. Nano-carbide strengthened as-welded joint for precipitation-hardened austenitic Fe–Mn–Al–C lightweight alloys

Abstract

To date, fusion welding the precipitation-hardened austenitic Fe–Mn–Al–C lightweight alloys still remains an insurmountable challenge. In the present study, the viability of using a Fe-28.3Mn-10.2Al-1.62C (in wt.% hereafter) as a welding filler wire for gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) of as-hot-rolled Fe-29.2Mn-8.8Al-1.65C base material (BM) were systematically investigated. It was striking that in the as-welded condition, a high density of nano-sized κ-carbide precipitates was formed by spinodal decomposition within the significantly refined austenite dendrite cells in the fusion zone (FZ). This unique feature is critical to achieve a high weld strength in virtually all fusion welded precipitation-hardened alloys. In the heat-affected zone (HAZ), the strengthening nano-sized κ-carbides originally existed in the BM was also preserved with no sign of dissolution or noticeable coarsening. Consequently, the as-welded joint exhibited a fairly uniform microhardness across the FZ, HAZ and BM. More significantly, the entire as-welded joint is free of any solidification cracking and/or liquation cracking. The as-welded joint also exhibited an excellent combination of yield strength, ultimate tensile strength and ductility.

5. Repetitive hydatidiform mole in the cesarean scar: a case report and literature review

Abstract

Objective: To report a case of Repetitive hydatidiform mole in the cesarean scar. Case Report: a 35-year-old woman presented to our hospital with irregular vaginal bleeding for more than one month. Transvaginal ultrasonography, serum hCG confirmed the cesarean scar pregnancy. The patient underwent a bilateral uterine artery embolization and a suction evacuation. The postoperative histologic examination of the tissue revealed a hydatidiform mole. Molar pregnancy in the cesarean scar is tough to differentiate from a normal cesarean scar pregnancy with serum hCG or sonogram. It was necessary to perform a histological examination of the post operative specimen for the cesarean scar pregnancy. Conclusion: A high index of suspicion is needed for early diagnosis and management of cesarean scar molar pregnancy. If we ignore it, it can be challenging to manage and can have potentially catastrophic consequences.

6. Reducing protein content in the diet of growing goats: implications for nitrogen balance, intestinal nutrient digestion and absorption, and rumen microbiota

Abstract

Reducing dietary CP content is an effective approach to reduce animal nitrogen excretion and save protein feed resources. However, it is not clear how reducing dietary CP content affects the nutrient digestion and absorption in the gut of ruminants, therefore it is difficult to accurately determine how much reduction in dietary CP content is appropriate. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of reduced dietary CP content on N balance, intestinal nutrient digestion and absorption, and rumen microbiota in growing goats. To determine N balance, 18 growing wether goats (25.0 ± 0.5 kg) were randomly assigned to one of three diets: 13.0% (control), 11.5% and 10.0% CP. Another 18 growing wether goats (25.0 ± 0.5 kg) were surgically fitted with ruminal, proximate duodenal, and terminal ileal fistulae and were randomly assigned to one of the three diets to investigate intestinal amino acid (AA) absorption and rumen microbiota. The results showed that fecal and urinary N excretion of goats fed diets containing 11.5% and 10.0% CP were lower than those of goats fed the control diet (P < 0.05). When compared with goats fed the control diet, N retention was decreased and apparent N digestibility in the entire gastrointestinal tract was increased in goats fed the 10% CP diet (P < 0.05). When compared with goats fed the control diet, the duodenal flow of lysine, tryptophan and phenylalanine was decreased in goats fed the 11.5% CP diet (P < 0.05) and that of lysine, methionine, tryptophan, phenylalanine, leucine, glutamic acid, tyrosine, essential AAs (EAAs) and total AAs (TAAs) was decreased in goats fed the 10.0% CP diet (P < 0.05). When compared with goats fed the control diet, the apparent absorption of TAAs in the small intestine was increased in goats fed the 11.5% CP diet (P < 0.05) and that of isoleucine, serine, cysteine, EAAs, non-essential AAs, and TAAs in the small intestine was increased in goats fed the 10.0% CP diet (P < 0.05). When compared with goats fed the control diet, the relative richness of Bacteroidetes and Fibrobacteres was increased and that of Proteobacteria and Synergistetes was decreased in the rumen of goats fed a diet with 10.0% CP. In conclusion, reducing dietary CP content reduced N excretion and increased nutrient utilization by improving rumen fermentation, enhancing nutrient digestion and absorption, and altering rumen microbiota in growing goats.

7. Mechanical performance and corrosion behaviour of Zr-based bulk metallic glass produced by selective laser melting

Abstract

Nearly fully dense, glassy Zr52.5Cu17.9Ni14.6Al10Ti5 bulk specimens were fabricated by selective laser melting (SLM) and their behaviour during compressive loading, during wear testing and in a corrosive medium was investigated. Their performance was compared with as-cast material of the same composition. The additively manufactured samples exhibit a yield strength around 1700 MPa combined with a plastic strain of about 0.5% after yielding despite the residual porosity of 1.3%, which is distributed uniformly in the samples. The propagation of shear bands in the bulk metallic glass prepared by SLM was studied. The specific wear rate and the worn surfaces demonstrated that similar wear mechanisms are active in the SLM and the as-cast samples. Hence, manufacturing the glass in layers does not adversely affect the wear properties. The same holds for the corrosion tests, which were carried out in 0.01 M Na2SO4 and 0.1 M NaCl electrolyte. The anodic polarization curves of SLM samples and as-cast samples revealed a similar corrosion behaviour. However, the SLM samples have a slightly reduced susceptibility to pitting corrosion and exhibit an improved surface healing ability, which might be attributed to an improved homogeneity of the additively manufactured glass. Porcine parvovirus, porcine pseudorabies virus and porcine circovirus type 2 can cause reproductive failure in pigs, and swine are often simultaneously infected by combinations of the three viruses. We here report the development of a SYBR Green I-based multiplex real time PCR assay for simultaneous detection of porcine parvovirus, porcine pseudorabies virus and porcine circovirus type 2. Three pairs of specific primers were designed for the porcine parvovirus-VP2, porcine pseudorabies virus-gH and porcine circovirus type 2-ORF2 genes. Viral genomes were identified based on their distinctive melting temperatures in singleplex PCR reactions. The melting temperature was 74.5 °C for the 313 bp amplicon of porcine parvovirus-VP2 gene, 87.5 °C for the 355 bp amplicon of porcine pseudorabies virus-gH gene and 80.5 °C for the 171 bp amplicon of the porcine circovirus type 2-ORF2 gene, respectively. The detection limit of the method ranged from 0.01-0.03 TCID50/ml for the three viruses. In addition, porcine parvovirus, porcine pseudorabies virus and porcine circovirus type 2 viral loads were measured in 100 field samples, and the result showed that the concordance between real-time PCR and conventional PCR was 60.42%. The sensitivity and specificity of real-time PCR were 100% and 100%, while those of conventional PCR were 40.83% and 72.22%, respectively.

Abstract

Using a data set of 2.93 fb−1 taken at a center-of-mass energy s=3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we perform a search for an extra U(1) gauge boson, also denoted as a dark photon. We examine the initial state radiation reactions e+e−→e+e−γISR and e+e−→μ+μ−γISR for this search, where the dark photon would appear as an enhancement in the invariant mass distribution of the leptonic pairs. We observe no obvious enhancement in the mass range between 1.5 and 3.4 GeV/c2 and set a 90% confidence level upper limit on the mixing strength of the dark photon and the Standard Model photon. We obtain a competitive limit in the tested mass range.

Abstract

Using a data set of 2.93 fb−1 taken at a center-of-mass energy of s=3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we measure the process e+e−→J/ψγ→μ+μ−γ and determine the product of the branching fraction and the electronic width Bμμ⋅Γee=(333.4±2.5stat±4.4sys) eV. Using the earlier-published BESIII result for Bμμ=(5.973±0.007stat±0.037sys)%, we derive the J/ψ electronic width Γee=(5.58±0.05stat±0.08sys) keV.

Abstract

We extract the e+e−→π+π− cross section in the energy range between 600 and 900 MeV, exploiting the method of initial state radiation. A data set with an integrated luminosity of 2.93 fb−1 taken at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider is used. The cross section is measured with a systematic uncertainty of 0.9%. We extract the pion form factor |Fπ|2 as well as the contribution of the measured cross section to the leading-order hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to (g−2)μ. We find this value to be aμππ,LO(600–900MeV)=(368.2±2.5stat±3.3sys)⋅10−10, which is between the corresponding values using the BaBar or KLOE data.

Abstract

By analyzing a data set of 2.92 fb−1 of e+e− collision data taken at s=3.773 GeV and 106.41×106 ψ(3686) decays taken at s=3.686 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we measure the branching fraction and the partial decay width for ψ(3770)→γχc0 to be B(ψ(3770)→γχc0)=(6.88±0.28±0.67)×10−3 and Γ[ψ(3770)→γχc0]=(187±8±19) keV, respectively. These are the most precise measurements to date.

Abstract

We study Ds+ decays to final states involving the η′ with a 482 pb−1 data sample collected at s=4.009 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. We measure the branching fractions B(Ds+→η′X)=(8.8±1.8±0.5)% and B(Ds+→η′ρ+)=(5.8±1.4±0.4)% where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. In addition, we estimate an upper limit on the non-resonant branching ratio B(Ds+→η′π+π0)

Abstract

Using the data sets taken at center-of-mass energies above 4 GeV by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring, we search for the reaction e+e−→γISRX(3872)→γISRπ+π−J/ψ via the Initial State Radiation technique. The production of a resonance with quantum numbers JPC=1++ such as the X(3872) via single photon e+e− annihilation is forbidden, but is allowed by a next-to-leading order box diagram. We do not observe a significant signal of X(3872), and therefore give an upper limit for the electronic width times the branching fraction ΓeeX(3872)B(X(3872)→π+π−J/ψ)

Abstract

We report a measurement of the parameter yCP in D0–D¯0 oscillations performed by taking advantage of quantum coherence between pairs of D0D¯0 mesons produced in e+e− annihilations near threshold. In this work, doubly-tagged D0D¯0 events, where one D decays to a CP eigenstate and the other D decays in a semileptonic mode, are reconstructed using a data sample of 2.92 fb−1 collected with the BESIII detector at the center-of-mass energy of s=3.773 GeV. We obtain yCP=(−2.0±1.3±0.7)%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. This result is compatible with the current world average. Abstract

Iron disilicide based thermoelectric materials Fe0.92Mn0.08Si(Sub x)(1.9 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 2.5) were prepared by rapid solidification (melt spinning) and hot uniaxial pressing at 1248 K with 50 MPa for 30 min, followed by annealing at 1073 K for 20 h. A maximum figure of merit, ZT=0.17, was obtained for Fe0.92Mn0.08Si2.0 at 973 K.

Abstract

Highly faceted ZnO rods with 18 side surfaces were prepared and their optical properties were examined. The low-temperature photoluminescence spectrum showed dominance of a donor bound exciton transition and at room temperature, both UV and green emissions associated with defects were observed, in spite of this long decay times of spontaneous emission were obtained indicating excellent crystal quality.

On 9 June 2019, Hong Kong became the focus of international attention as hundreds of thousands of demonstrators marched on Hong Kong Island to oppose the imminent enactment of a bill that would introduce a rendition arrangement, inter alia, as between Hong Kong and other parts of China (including mainland China, Taiwan and Macau). Abstract

Objective: Age of onset of gout has recently decreased; however, patients with early-onset gout remain uncommon, and relevant information is scant. We hypothesized that these patients might exhibit differences in serum urates and other comorbidities compared with adult-onset patients., Methods: Early-onset gout patients (i.e., juveniles) with (n = 40) and without tophi (n = 47) were enrolled for study. Their clinical characteristics were compared with those of 353 patients with middle-age-onset tophaceous gout and 64 age-matched healthy participants., Results: Early-onset gout patients with tophi exhibited significantly higher body mass indices and serum urate levels and lower estimated glomerular filtration rates (eGFR) than did those without tophi. Early-onset gout patients with or without tophi demonstrated significantly abnormal lipid profiles and impaired liver or renal function compared with healthy patients. Serum urate levels and gout duration were identified as the principal determinants of tophi development. The presence of tophi might be crucial in decreasing eGFR, which is inversely related to tophi duration or gout duration. Unexpectedly, the most common site of initial gout attacks in early-onset tophaceous gout patients was the ankle, not the toe, which was the most common site in middle-age-onset tophaceous gout patients. The most common site of first tophi occurrence in early-onset patients was a finger, not a toe, which was the most common site in middle-age-onset patients., Conclusion: Early-onset tophaceous gout patients are more likely to exhibit comorbidities and renal dysfunction than middle-age-onset patients and exhibit distinct first sites of gout attack and tophi occurrence patterns.
