The author examines the background and aftermath of the government's 1977 Green Paper, "Education in Schools: A Consultative Document." In particular, he discusses the possibilities of government interference in curricular decision making at the local level. (Editor/SJL)

ASE's Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme is designed and run by people--teachers--who understand the pressures. They realise that the solution to good professional development is not to give the teacher extra work to do, but to draw added value from the tasks which the teacher is engaged in already or soon will be--and, importantly, which will further the aims of the school. Many CPD participants work in secondary science departments, usually mentored by their own heads of department. In this article, the author describes this flexible programme based firmly on the needs of individual teachers and their schools.

The British Educational Communications & Technology Agency (Becta) has introduced its Independent Procurement Advisory Services (IPAS), which is currently being trialled in Staffordshire, Northamptonshire, Leicester, Doncaster and Blackburn with Darwen. The scheme aims to provide advice and support to decision-makers buying ICT products and services for use in schools. The scheme does not recommend which products and services teachers should buy, but instead trains them in best procurement practice.
