Anxiety is an identified risk for students and its rates are increasing amongst young people. While there are numerous articles available on anxiety and adolescents, little is known about the impact that rurality may have on anxiety in secondary school students. In light of this, a systematic literature review was undertaken to explore not only the ways in which anxiety impacts upon students in secondary school but also whether living and studying in a rural context presented additional stressors. Through an examination of 29 peer-reviewed publications, six key themes were identified relating to the area under investigation: anxiety, long-term effect of anxiety, school completion, academic achievement, rurality and educational interventions. The conclusion of this review is that while rurality can have a significant negative impact upon students' anxiety and its management, through the implementation of school-based interventions, teachers can minimise its effect on academic outcomes.

Archives provide an important service in the preservation of our heritage, but the core archival processes involved in making literary papers accessible are essentially invisible to researchers. This essay outlines issues relating to archival appraisal, arrangement, and description because these processes directly affect the organization and subsequent interpretation of archival materials. What materials have archival value? How does an archivist respect original order while ensuring organized access? To what extent can and should finding aids as well as facsimiles of documents be made available in digital format? Discussion of these questions is illustrated with examples from Dalhousie University Archives and Special Collections' literary holdings, which include the papers of William R. Bird, Frank Parker Day, Thomas Head Raddall, and Budge Wilson. Background Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) affect approximately 10-15% of pregnancies and pre-eclampsia affects 3-5% of pregnancies. Women with previous pre-eclampsia or HDP are at increased risk of hypertension (2 to 5 times) and major cardiovascular disease (1.5 to 3 times). There is little guidance on how to reduce this risk. Aim To establish if there are interventions in women with previous HDP or pre-eclampsia that reduce the risk of developing adverse cardiovascular outcomes. Method A protocol was submitted to PROSPERO; inclusion and exclusion criteria were determined and a search strategy implemented. Primary outcomes were: development of hypertension or change in blood pressure and development of other cardiovascular complications. Records and full texts were screened independently by two reviewers. The Cochrane Risk of Bias tool was used for quality assessment. Results 3593 articles were screened. Nine articles were included. There were seven randomised-controlled trials and two quasi-experimental studies. One study trialled antihypertensive use, two studies looked at blood pressure monitoring and six studies focused on lifestyle interventions. Three trials reported significant reductions in diastolic blood pressure in the experimental group. No studies looked at the optimal time of intervention or the impact of interventions on the development of other long-term cardiovascular complications. Five studies reported participant feedback. The majority of studies were of low quality. Conclusion Further research needs to explore potential interventions and optimal timing of interventions to reduce cardiovascular risk. A study was conducted to compare self-assessment and blindly rated performance assessments, since functional performance measures had been stated to be superior to self-report measures in terms of reproducibility, sensitivity to change and acceptability by more patients. The results indicated that performance measures were not psychometrically better than self-assessments, and are not more sensitive to change or reproducible or more acceptable to patients. Both assessments were compared by using similar rating formats.

Background: The NHS is facing a workforce crisis. Responses to date have focused on improving recruitment of staff, but less attention has been paid to retention. Aim: To conduct a rapid review using Rosabeth Moss Kanter’s three Ms model of workforce motivation as a sensitising framework to examine the current medical workforce crisis. The work considers how insights from research in other professions offers new thinking for understanding what motivates doctors to continue working. Design & setting: Rapid literature review with secondary analysis of existing research examining reasons for leaving medicine. Method: A systematic search strategy was developed with the aid of an information specialist. The search terms used were: medical professionals, retention, and NHS. The exclusions were: commentaries, non-medical professionals, non-English language, and it was limited to post-1990. The search was applied to three electronic databases, MEDLINE, Embase, and Healthcare Management Information Consortium (HMIC). This produced a dataset describing study design, and factors related to motivation for leaving the medical profession. Comparative thematic analysis distilled core themes explaining the reasons for leaving and their relation to the three Ms model. Results: Of 3389 abstracts identified, screening and assessment produced 82 articles included in the final analysis. Thematic analysis identified four key themes: low morale, disconnect, unmanageable change, and lack of personal and professional support. The themes of mastery, membership, and meaning were substantially present within the dataset. Conclusion: Kanter's three Ms model of motivation can be applied to the medical workforce to understand retention issues. Amplifying her mixed-method approach, the book uses not only raw numerical data to show the trends in hiring law school faculty but also extensive interviews with both male and female faculty of all races and backgrounds. Meera Deo, professor at Thomas Jefferson School of Law, sheds light on the current state of the legal academy. If pieces of Deo's book are slowly implemented in law schools, we will gradually begin to see the faculty look more like the tapestry that law schools often want to portray in their student guides but are unable to. The article discusses research on the forelimb musculature of kangaroos, specifically that of the tammar wallaby or Macropus eugenii. It references a study by Kathryn J. Harvey at the University of Western Australia School of Animal Biology in Crawley, Western Australia, and her colleagues, published in an issue of "Australian Mammalogy." The researchers found that the anatomy of the forelimb muscles are consistent with the supporting role of the limb during slow locomotion. They added that a bipedal sitting posture is used by kangaroos while the forepaws are free for the purpose of food manipulation.

This Note explores the issue of interstate recognition of child custody, which arises in the context of same-sex divorce. The Parental Kidnapping Prevention Act (PKPA) requires states to grant full faith and credit to all child custody orders, on the other hand, the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) allows states to deny full faith and credit to judgments "arising out of" same-sex marriage. This Note argues that DOMA partially repeals the PKPA, such that states need not grant full faith and credit to divorce and child custody decrees in the context of same-sex marriage. Further, this Note argues that because same-sex divorce does not raise the same concerns as same-sex marriage, sister states should recognize same-sex divorce and custody orders as doing so is in the best interest of the child and supports interstate comity. The article explores the impact of lawyer David Ross McCord, founder of the McCord National Museum, on Canadian history through the narrative he created in the collections held by his museum. Biographical information on McCord is presented and collecting as a cultural process, the development of a masculine, heroic, Canadian genealogy, and the commingling of personal and historic artifacts within the McCord collection are examined. McCord's mental and physical health and his attempts to catalogue his collection of Canadian artifacts are also discussed.

Dalhousie University Archives and Special Collections (DUASC) has been producing Encoded Archival Description (EAD) finding aids to describe its archival collections since 2003. The EAD descriptions started as a way to convert the collection of print and electronic (Microsoft Word and WordPerfect) finding aids into a stable, software neutral format. As the collection of finding aids grew, it became apparent that we needed a way to search these documents beyond what was possible via a basic browse on the DUASC website. As a result, we embarked on a systematic crosswalk of the EAD finding aids into MARC 21 format for inclusion in the Novanet library catalogue. This has facilitated searching and discovery of the materials by a much broader audience of Dalhousie University Library users as well as users from all of the other Novanet member libraries in Nova Scotia and the general public. This article describes the primary motivation for the project and the technical aspects of converting the EAD finding aids into MARC 21 format for inclusion in the Novanet catalogue. The article discusses issues concerning physician-assisted suicide (PAS) from Catholic perspective. Topics covered include the history of PAS in the U.S. and Great Britain, the role of British author Derek Humphry and American pathologist Jack Kevorkian in popularizing PAS, the relation between legalization of PAS and the rate of total suicides and postponed planned suicides and the role of mercy in dying patients.

A case of septic pulmonary thromboembolism arising from thrombophlebitis of the prostatic venous plexus associated with long-term urinary catheterisation in a 51-year-old man is reported. Despite a previous autopsy having been conducted in the country where he had been resident overseas, a re-examination showed histological evidence of mild patchy chronic prostatitis with a florid, focally purulent, thrombophlebitis of the periprostatic venous plexus with abscess formation and evidence of bacterial overgrowth. Corresponding microscopy of the lungs showed septic microthromboemboli within small pulmonary arteries with variable degrees of necrotising acute inflammation and thrombosis. Death was not due to 'acute pulmonary oedema' as had been originally certified but to septic thromboembolism.
