An accurate and rapid identification of the number of MoS2 layers in a nondestructive manner is essential for implementing MoS2-based electronic and optoelectronic devices as their properties and performance depend sensitively on the layer number. This paper reports that scanning electron microscopy imaging with an in-column backscattered electron (BSE) detector coupled with a low acceleration voltage provides layer number-sensitive high contrast for MoS2 on an insulating SiO2 substrate, enabling the differentiation of MoS2 with different layer numbers. The results show that, unlike graphene, where secondary electrons emitted from the SiO2 substrate are attenuated by graphene, leading to reverse contrast with increasing the layer number, BSEs originating from the elastic scattering of incident primary electrons with Mo and S atoms give rise to a layer number-sensitive compositional contrast for MoS2 at a low acceleration voltage. Contrary to low-energy secondary electrons, high-energy BSEs are less sensitive to the surface charging effect, which makes BSE imaging at a low acceleration voltage advantageous. This feature renders BSE imaging less noisy and more stable. A statistical analysis of the relationship between the MoS2 layer number and BSE image contrast demonstrates that the unique relationship between the two allows for a quantitative estimation of the MoS2 layer number up to four layers. The technological developments initiated in the early 21$^{\rm st}$ century have led to the implementation of “planet finders” instruments on 8-m class telescopes which are in operation since 2014-2015. Such facilities are at the inception of significant progresses in the study of exoplanetary systems by enabling high contrast imaging of the environment of young nearby stars. One of the most productive science in this field is certainly the observations at high angular resolution of circumstellar disks, from the very young gas-rich protoplanetary disks all the way to more elusive dust-rich debris disks. In this paper, we summarize the main results obtained for these two categories of objects focusing on their morphological characteristics, as well as on the measurement of optical properties of the small dust particles to which the near IR spectral range is sensitive to. We mostly provide exemples based on observations performed with the SPHERE instrument at the VLT.

The success of ground-based, high contrast imaging for the detection of exoplanets in part depends on the ability to differentiate between quasi-static speckles caused by aberrations not corrected by adaptive optics (AO) systems, known as non-common path aberrations (NCPAs), and the planet intensity signal. Frazin (ApJ, 2013) introduced a post-processing algorithm demonstrating that simultaneous millisecond exposures in the science camera and wavefront sensor (WFS) can be used with a statistical inference procedure to determine both the series expanded NCPA coefficients and the planetary signal. We demonstrate, via simulation, that using this algorithm in a closed-loop AO system, real-time estimation and correction of the quasi-static NCPA is possible without separate deformable mirror (DM) probes. Thus the use of this technique allows for the removal of the quasi-static speckles that can be mistaken for planetary signals without the need for new optical hardware, improving the efficiency of ground-based exoplanet detection. In our simulations, we explore the behavior of the Frazin Algorithm (FA) and the dependence of its convergence to an accurate estimate on factors such as Strehl ratio, NCPA strength, and number of algorithm search basis functions. We then apply this knowledge to simulate running the algorithm in real-time in a nearly ideal setting. We then discuss adaptations that can be made to the algorithm to improve its real-time performance, and show their efficacy in simulation. A final simulation tests the technique's resilience against imperfect knowledge of the AO residual phase, motivating an analysis of the feasibility of using this technique in a real closed-loop Extreme AO system such as SCExAO or MagAO-X, in terms of computational complexity and the accuracy of the estimated quasi-static NCPA correction.

The Gemini Planet Imager Exoplanet Survey (GPIES) is a multiyear direct imaging survey of 600 stars to discover and characterize young Jovian exoplanets and their environments. We have developed an automated data architecture to process and index all data related to the survey uniformly. An automated and flexible data processing framework, which we term the Data Cruncher, combines multiple data reduction pipelines (DRPs) together to process all spectroscopic, polarimetric, and calibration data taken with GPIES. With no human intervention, fully reduced and calibrated data products are available less than an hour after the data are taken to expedite follow up on potential objects of interest. The Data Cruncher can run on a supercomputer to reprocess all GPIES data in a single day as improvements are made to our DRPs. A backend MySQL database indexes all files, which are synced to the cloud, and a front-end web server allows for easy browsing of all files associated with GPIES. To help observers, quicklook displays show reduced data as they are processed in real time, and chatbots on Slack post observing information as well as reduced data products. Together, the GPIES automated data processing architecture reduces our workload, provides real-Time data reduction, optimizes our observing strategy, and maintains a homogeneously reduced dataset to study planet occurrence and instrument performance.

The SPHERE (Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet Research) instrument aims at detecting extremely faintsources (giant extrasolar planets) in the vicinity of bright stars1. Such a challenging goal requires the use of a very-highorderperformance Adaptive Optics [AO] system feeding the scientific instruments with a quasi-perfect flat wave frontcorrected from all the atmospheric turbulence and internal defects. This AO system, called SAXO (Sphere Ao foreXoplanet Observation) is the heart of the instrument, a heart beating 1200 time per second and providing unprecedentedimage quality for a large ground based telescope at optical/near infrared wavelength. We will present the latest resultsobtained on-sky, demonstrating its exceptional performance (in terms of correction quality, stability and robustness) andtremendous potentiality for exoplanet discovery

The SPHERE instrument (Beuzit, et al., 2010) is dedicated to the direct imaging of extra-solar planets. This kind of observation allows one to study the photons emitted by the planet’s atmosphere itself, or reflected by its surface. The search for bio-markers is therefore made possible. The SPHERE instrument has been installed and commissioned at VLT Paranal Observatory during 2014 and now routinely delivers high contrast images to the exoplanet community. This paper presents a study of the main actual limitation of the SPHERE instrument, as known as the Low Wind Effect [LWE]. This effect has been discovered on SPHERE during commissioning period. Its effect is a strong degradation of the instrument PSF, preventing instrument to perform high contrast imaging. It happens during particularly low wind conditions (below 1m/s at the telescope level) which happens one night out of five.

While an ideal optical vortex coronagraph operating behind a clear, circular, unaberrated telescope aperture can theoretically provide perfect rejection of the incident plane wave from an unresolved star, use of a telescope with an on-axis secondary mirror limits the rejection. In theory, a dual-stage vortex coronagraph can provide improved starlight rejection for an on-axis telescope, and here we provide experimental confirmation of the predicted distribution of the residual light in the output pupil plane of a dual-stage vortex coronagraph. In addition, a simple method of further improving the rejection of such a coronagraph is suggested: by slightly oversizing the first Lyot stop and phase-shifting the light within the exposed annulus by half a wave, the residual starlight within the pupil can be canceled to deeper levels. SPICES (Spectro-Polarimetric Imaging and Characterization of Exoplanetary Systems) is a five-year M-class mission proposed to ESA Cosmic Vision. Its purpose is to image and characterize long-period extrasolar planets and circumstellar disks in the visible (450-900 nm) at a spectral resolution of about 40 using both spectroscopy and polarimetry. By 2020/2022, present and near-term instruments will have found several tens of planets that SPICES will be able to observe and study in detail. Equipped with a 1.5 m telescope, SPICES can preferentially access exoplanets located at several AUs (0.5-10 AU) from nearby stars (<25 pc) with masses ranging from a few Jupiter masses to Super Earths (∼2 Earth radii, ∼10 M) as well as circumstellar disks as faint as a few times the zodiacal light in the Solar System. Abstract: We report on the Achromatic Interfero Coronagraph, a focal imaging device which aims at rejecting the energy contribution of a point-like source set on-axis, so as to make detectable its angularly-close environment (applicable to stellar environment: circumstellar matter, faint companions, planetary systems, but also conceivably to Active Galactic Nucleii and multiple asteroïds). With AIC, starlight rejection is based on destructive interference, which allows exploration of the star''s neighbourhood at an angular resolution better than the diffraction limit of the hosting telescope. Thanks to the focus crossing property of light, rejection is achromatic thus yielding a large spectral bandwidth of work. Descriptions and comments are given regarding the principle, the device itself, the constraints and limitations, and the theoretical performance. Results are presented which demonstrate the close-sensing capability and which show images of a companion obtained in laboratory and ‘on the sky’ as well. Abstract: Residual wavefront errors in optical elements limit the performance of coronagraphs. To improve their efficiency, different types of devices have been proposed to correct or calibrate these errors. In this article, we study one of these techniques proposed by Baudoz et al. (2006), and called Self-Coherent Camera (SCC). The principle of this instrument is based on the lack of coherence between the stellar light and the planet that is searched for. After recalling the principle of the SCC, we simulate its performance under realistic conditions and compare it with the performance of differential imaging. To cite this article: R. Galicher, P. Abstract: At Princeton we have been studying shaped pupil coronagraphs for high contrast imaging and planet finding. These will find applications in both ground and space imaging. In this article we summarize the design procedure for shaped pupils and review the various families of designs we have found. We describe the manufacturing processes we have used to make free standing shaped pupil masks and review our most recent laboratory results with and without wavefront control. Radial velocity surveys provide evidence that giant extrasolar planets are common, but their detection space is limited to only a few astronomical units from the stars. In order to close this gap, the adaptive optics assisted NIR imager NAOS-CONICA (NACO) at the VLT was used for a deep (15-20 minutes exposure time per target) L-band survey of a sample of closeby young stars. All stars are members of the Tucana and $\beta$ Pictoris moving groups apart from the the somewhat older star HIP 71395 that has a radial velocity trend suggesting a massive planet in large orbit. The chosen observation wavelength is very well suited for very high contrast imaging of close companions at this age and makes this survey unique. The goal was to detect substellar companions to these stars at distances as close as 5-20 AU and ultimately to detect giant extrasolar planets down to a few Jupiter masses, to measure their frequency, and - by comparison with models - determine their physical properties. The article discusses the high-contrast imaging of nano-channels using reflection near-field scanning optical microscope (NSOM) enhanced by optical interference. The researchers of the study have demonstrated a contrast enhancement in a near-field scanning optical microscope by optical interference with an aperture probe in reflection mode operation. The reflection NSOM was a promising instrument for high-resolution optical detection and estimation of low-contrast nanostructures.

Here we present the installation and successful commissioning of an L'-band Annular Groove Phase Mask (AGPM) coronagraph on VLT/NACO. The AGPM is a vector vortex coronagraph made from diamond subwavelength gratings tuned to the L' band. The vector vortex coronagraph enables high contrast imaging at very small inner working angle (here 0″.09, the diffraction limit of the VLT at L'), potentially being the key to a new parameter space. During technical and science verification runs, we discovered a late-type companion at two beamwidths from an F0V star (Mawet et al. 2013), and imaged the inner regions of β Pictoris down to the previously unexplored projected radius of 1.75 AU. The circumstellar disk was also resolved from ≃ 1″ to 5″ (see J. Milli et al., these proceedings). These results showcase the potential of the NACO L-band AGPM over a wide range of spatial scales.
