Induction-heating graphitization furnaces are widely used to produce high-purity graphite products due to their high heating rate, high-limit temperatures, safety, cleanliness, and precise control. However, the existing induction-heating systems based on copper coils have limited energy efficiency. This paper proposes a new induction-heating graphitization furnace based on graphene coils. Due to the excellent high-temperature resistance of the macroscopic graphene material, the coil can be placed closer to the graphite heater, which improves the electromagnetic efficiency; the coil itself does not need to pass cooling water, which reduces the heat loss of the furnace and ultimately results in a higher energy efficiency of the induction furnace. In this paper, a numerical model of the induction-heating process is established and verified, the temperature-field and electromagnetic-field distributions of the heating process are analyzed by using the model, and the energy balance calculations are performed for the original furnace and the new furnace. Through a comparison, it was found that the new furnace possesses an electromagnetic efficiency of 84.87% and a thermal efficiency of 20.82%, and it can reduce the energy consumption by 33.34%, compared with the original furnace. In addition, the influence of the coil parameters on the performance of the induction furnace is discussed. By changing the coil conductivity, the induction furnace can achieve an energy efficiency of 17.76%–18.11%. This study provides new ideas for the application of macroscopic graphene materials in high-temperature induction heating.

Exfoliated graphite (EG) is promising oil sorbent as well as an intermediate product for the preparation of flexible graphite films (FGFs). It has been a critical challenge to energy conservation and pollution abatement for the traditional EG production technique. Here, we propose a simple and effective preparation method to acquire EG in which flake graphite is intercalated and exfoliated at room temperature, not involving any pollutant emission. The influence factors in the preparation process were explored, such as the amount of H2SO4 and H2O2, the temperature for the preparation of room temperature exfoliated graphite (RTEG). In contrast to the EG by high temperature exfoliation (HTEG), RTEG exhibits a homogeneous structure and a significantly increased volume and surface area. Moreover, EG blocks with high oil sorption capacity and excellent reuse performance can be obtained by RTEG method. Especially, FGFs fabricated by RTEG has high flexibility, thermal conductivity and electrical conductivity. It suggests that this environment-friendly technology is suitable for large-scale industrial implementation of graphite-based oil sorbents and flexible materials.

Abstract FeNC materials have shown a promising nonprecious oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalyst yet their active site structure remains elusive. Several previous works suggest the existence of a mysterious axial ligand on the Fe center, which, however, is still unclarified. In this study, the mysterious axial ligand is identified as a hydroxyl ligand on the Fe centers and selectively promotes the ORR activities depending on different FeN4C configurations, on which the adsorption free energy of the hydroxyl ligand also differs greatly. The selective formation of hydroxyl ligand on specific FeNC configurations can resolve contradictories between previous theoretical and experimental results regarding the ORR activities and associated active configurations of FeNC catalysts. It also explains the pH‐dependent ORR activities and, moreover, a previously unreported pH‐dependent poisoning kinetics of the FeNC catalysts.

ABSTRACT Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning PEO solution with a mixed solvent of ethanol and deionized water. The results show that the mixed solvent system has noteworthy influences on structures and properties of electrospun PEO nanofibers, including molecular chain orientation, crystallinity degree, surface morphology, fiber diameter, diameter distribution, spinnability, and productivity. With increasing ethanol content in the mixed solvent, wrinkly morphologies appear on the surface of PEO nanofibers due to a high evaporation rate of ethanol during electrospinning process. The dielectric constant, dipole moment, conductivity, density, boiling point, and solubility parameter of the mixed solvent become lower with the ethanol content increasing. Besides, the hydrogen-bonding interactions between PEO and solvents become weaker. As a result, PEO nanofibers with larger diameters, lower molecular chain orientation, and crystallinity degree are obtained. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2018, 135, 45787. The activated carbons (ACs) are prepared from mesophase pitch which is pre-carbonized by using potassium hydroxide as an activating agent. Nitrogen adsorption at 77 K is used to characterize the surface area and the porous structure of the ACs. By changing the pre-carbonization temperature from 560 to 750 °C, the arrangement of the ACs' microcrystallines might be controllable, and the pore size could be adjusted between 1.5 and 2.4 nm. The electrochemical performance of the ACs in organic solvent (1 M EtNBF in propylene carbonate) is investigated by voltage sweep cyclic voltammetry and constant current charge-discharge cycling tests. The results show that the ions can transfer rapidly and freely in the pore larger than or equal to 1.85 nm, even when the current density increases to 25 A g. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Free-standing graphene-based macroscopic membranes, which are characterized by a layered structure and tunable conductivity, are prepared by a self-assembly process at a liquid–air interface. Since the preliminary results indicate that it is hard to construct macroscopic graphene membranes solely by low-temperature exfoliated graphene nanosheets (LGNs) at the liquid–air interface, graphene oxide nanosheets (GONs), as the stacking template and sticking component, are introduced into the assembly process of graphene layers to promote the formation of layer-by-layer stacking structure and help form a conductive macroscopic membrane. The conductivity of such a graphene-based membrane can be tuned by changing the GON fraction in the LGN/GON hybrid membrane. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The increasing worldwide interest in MnO2 for supercapacitor applications is based on anticipation that MnO2-based high-voltage aqueous supercapacitors will ultimately serve as a safe and low-cost alternative to state-of-the-art commercial organic-based electrochemical double-layer capacitors or RuO2-based acid systems. In this paper, the physicochemical features, synthesis methods, and charge storage mechanism of MnO2 as well as the current status of MnO2-based supercapacitors are summarized and discussed in detail. It has been indicated that anatase TiO2 is a promising anode material for lithium ion power battery from many previous researches. Whereas, in this work, we find that the anatase TiO2, when used as an anode for lithium ion battery, has high catalytic activity to initiate the decarboxylation reaction of electrolyte solution, resulting in the large generation of sole gaseous component, CO2. The ROLi species and the new phase of flake-like Li2TiF6 material are the main reaction products between anatase TiO2 and LiPF6 based electrolyte solution. This work provides important and urgent information that the surface chemistry of anatase TiO2 used as the anode material of lithium ion battery must be modified to suppress its catalytic activity for the decomposition of solvents.
