This investigation aims to compare the methylene blue (MB) removal by adsorption from water, using raw and delignified bamboo cells, i.e. fiber cells (FCs) and parenchyma cells (PCs). FCs and PCs were characterized using SEM, FTIR, BET surface area, and XPS before and after delignification and MB absorption. Compared with FCs, PCs had a looser cell wall and a larger cell cavity, indicating that PCs have more physical adsorption spaces. Both PCs and FCs had higher specific surface areas and more pore-rich structures after removing lignin. Therefore, the adsorption results show that both PCs and FCs had greater adsorption capacities after removing lignin, which were 29.6 and 23.9 mg/g, respectively. The kinetics and isotherm results revealed that the adsorption process on MB corresponded to pseudo-second-order models and monolayer adsorption (the Langmuir model), respectively. PCs always had better adsorption capacities than FCs, which was due to the fact that more MB clusters were observed on PCs and a larger increment of peak corresponded to C–N/C–O in PCs. Alnus cremastogyne is a rapidly growing broad-leaved tree species that is widely distributed in southwest China. It has a significant economic and ecological value. However, with the expansion of the planting area, the influence of phenotypic variation and differentiation on Alnus cremastogyne has increased, resulting in a continuous decline in its genetic quality. Therefore, it is crucial to investigate the phenotypic variation of Alnus cremastogyne and select excellent breeding materials for genetic improvement. Herein, four growth-related phenotypic traits (diameter at breast height, the height of trees, volume, height under the branches) and twelve reproductive-related phenotypic traits (fresh weight of single cone, dry weight of single cone, seed weight per plant, thousand kernel weight, cone length, cone width, cone length × cone width, fruit shape index, seed rate, germination rate, germination potential, germination index) of 40 clones from four provenances were measured and analyzed. The phenotypic variation was comprehensively evaluated by correlation analysis, principal component analysis and cluster analysis, and excellent clones were selected as breeding materials. The results revealed that there were abundant phenotypic traits variations among and within provenances. Most of the phenotypic traits were highly significant differences (p < 0.01) among provenances. The phenotypic variation among provenances (26.36%) was greater than that of within provenances clones (24.80%). The average phenotypic differentiation coefficient was accounted for 52.61% among provenances, indicating that the phenotypic variation mainly came from among provenances. The coefficient of variation ranged from 9.41% (fruit shape index) to 97.19% (seed weight per plant), and the repeatability ranged from 0.36 (volume) to 0.77 (cone width). Correlation analysis revealed a significantly positive correlation among most phenotypic traits. In principal component analysis, the cumulative contribution rate of the first three principal components was 79.18%, representing the main information on the measured phenotypic traits. The cluster analysis revealed four groups for the 40 clones. Group I and group II exhibited better performance phenotypic traits as compared with group III and group IV. In addition, the four groups are not clearly clustered following the distance from the provenance. Employing the multi-trait comprehensive evaluation method, 12 excellent clones were selected, and the average genetic gain for each phenotypic trait ranged from 4.78% (diameter at breast height) to 32.05% (dry weight of single cone). These selected excellent clones can serve as candidate materials for the improvement and transformation of Alnus cremastogyne seed orchards. Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) can be used as an adsorbent to efficiently adsorb organic pollutants. However, ZIF nanoparticles are easy to form aggregates, hampering the effective and practical application in practical adsorption. In this study, the ZIF-8 was successfully loaded onto lignocellulose (LC) to further produce ZnO/LC by in situ growth method and hydrothermal treatment, and then Fe3O4 nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NPs) were loaded onto ZnO/LC to prepare magnetic Fe3O4/ZnO/LC adsorbent for removing tetracycline (TC) and congo red (CR) pollutants from aqueous solution. The adsorption properties of the adsorbent were systematically analyzed for different conditions, such as adsorbent dosage, solution pH, contact time, temperature and initial concentration. The experimental data were fitted using adsorption kinetic and isotherm models. The results showed that the pseudo-second-order model and Sips model were well fitted to the adsorption kinetic and adsorption isotherm, respectively. The adsorption capacities of TC and CR reached the maximum value of 383.4 mg/g and 409.1 mg/g in experimental conditions. The mechanism of the removal mainly includes electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding and π-π stacking. Plant essential oils are widely used in food, medicine, cosmetics, and other fields because of their bacteriostatic properties and natural sources. However, the bacteriostatic range of unilateral essential oils is limited, and compound essential oil has become an effective way to improve the antibacterial properties of unilateral essential oils. In this study, based on the analysis of the antibacterial properties of Chinese cinnamon bark oil and oregano oil, the proportion and concentration of the compound essential oil were optimized and designed, and the antibacterial activity of the compound essential oil was studied. The results showed that the antibacterial activity of Chinese cinnamon bark oil was higher than that of oregano oil. The compound essential oil prepared by a 1:1 ratio of Chinese cinnamon bark oil and oregano oil with a concentration of 156.25 ppm showed an excellent antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The GC-MS results showed that cinnamaldehyde was the main antibacterial component of Chinese cinnamon bark essential oil, and carvacrol and thymol in oregano oil were the main antibacterial components. In recent years, the scarcity of pure water resources has received a lot of attention from society because of the increasing amount of pollution from industrial waste. It is very important to use low-cost adsorbents with high-adsorption performance to reduce water pollution. In this work, a gel adsorbent with a high-adsorption performance on methylene blue (MB) and Cu(II) was prepared from bamboo nanocellulose (BCNF) (derived from waste bamboo paper) and montmorillonite nanosheet (MMTNS) cross-linked by polyethyleneimine (PEI). The resulting gel adsorbent was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS), etc. The results indicated that the MB and Cu(II) adsorption capacities of the resulting gel adsorbent increased with the solution pH, contact time, initial concentration, and temperature before equilibrium. The adsorption processes of MB and Cu(II) fitted well with the fractal-like pseudo-second-order model. The maximal adsorption capacities on MB and Cu(II) calculated by the Sips model were 361.9 and 254.6 mg/g, respectively. The removal of MB and Cu(II) from aqueous solutions mainly included electrostatic attraction, ion exchange, hydrogen bonding interaction, etc. These results suggest that the resulting gel adsorbent is an ideal material for the removal of MB and Cu(II) from aqueous solutions. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) has been widely applied in industries for its low cost, nontoxicity, biodegradability, and renewable advantages. However, its unstable structure may not meet some strong physical and mechanical needs. In order to enhance the performances of the PVA film, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), tannic acid (TA), and chitosan (CS), working as a reinforcer, a crosslinker, and an antimicrobial agent, respectively, were introduced into the PVA matrix. The results indicated that CNCs, TA, and CS were evenly distributed and cohesively incorporated within the PVA matrix, which contributed to the good mechanical properties and thermal stabilities of biocomposite PVA films. Besides, the addition of TA remarkably improved the antiultraviolet and antioxidant capabilities of PVA films, although the light transmittance declined slightly. It was also observed that the pure PVA film and PVA reinforced with CNCs were incapable of protecting against bacteria, while the ones with CS had prominent antibacterial properties to Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Background and Objectives. The development of network medicine provides new opportunities for disease research. Ischemic stroke has a high incidence, disability, and recurrence rate, and one of the reasons is that it is often accompanied by other complex diseases, including risk factors, complications, and comorbidities. Network medicine was used to try to analyze the characteristics of IS-related diseases and find out the differences in genetic pathways between Chinese herbs and Western drugs. Methods. Individualized treatment of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) provides a theoretical basis for the study of the personalized classification of complex diseases. Utilizing the TCM clinical electronic medical records (EMRs) of 7170 in patients with IS, a patient similarity network (PSN) with shared symptoms was constructed. Next, patient subgroups were identified using community detection methods and enrichment analyses were performed. Finally, genetic data of symptoms, herbs, and drugs were used for pathway and GO analysis to explore the characteristics of pathways of subgroups and to compare the similarities and differences in genetic pathways of herbs and drugs from the perspective of molecular pathways of symptoms. Results. We identified 34 patient modules from the PSN, of which 7 modules include 98.48% of the whole cases. The 7 patient subgroups have their own characteristics of risk factors, complications, and comorbidities and the underlying genetic pathways of symptoms, drugs, and herbs. Each subgroup has the largest number of herb pathways. For specific symptom pathways, the number of herb pathways is more than that of drugs. Conclusion. The research of disease classification based on community detection of symptom-shared patient networks is practical; the common molecular pathway of symptoms and herbs reflects the rationality of TCM herbs on symptoms and the wide range of therapeutic targets. The thermal decomposition characteristics of microwave liquefied rape straw residues with respect to liquefaction condition and pyrolysis conversion were investigated using a thermogravimetric (TG) analyzer at the heating rates of 5, 20, 50 °C min−1. The hemicellulose decomposition peak was absent at the derivative thermogravimetric analysis (DTG) curve of liquefied residues, because it had been decomposed during the liquefaction. Furthermore, among the liquefied residues, the one from the reaction condition of 180 °C/15 min had the highest thermal stability under a high temperature (>700 °C). The DTG profiles revealed that raising the temperature heating rate could result in an increase in the maximum decomposition temperature. The apparent activation energy (Eα) values of the liquefied residues were lower than that of non-liquefied raw rape straw, whereas the recondensation reaction occurred at 180 °C/15 min remarkably increased the Eα. A noticeable increase in the Eα was observed for the liquefied residue from the 180 °C/10 min samples as the pyrolysis conversion increased from 0.15 to 0.55, suggesting a complex decomposition process with the increasing pyrolysis temperature. The liquefaction process could decrease the thermal decomposition temperature of biomass, which means higher reactivity and lower operational costs during pyrolysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lignin samples fractionated from microwave liquefied switchgrass were applied in the preparation of semirigid polyurethane (PU) foams without purification. The objective of this study was to elucidate the influence of lignin in the PU matrix on the morphological, chemical, mechanical, and thermal properties of the PU foams. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images revealed that lignin with 5 and 10% content in the PU foams did not influence the cell shape and size. The foam cell size became larger by increasing the lignin content to 15%. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) indicated that chemical interactions occurred between the lignin hydroxyl and isocyanate revealing that lignin was well dispersed in the matrix materials. The apparent density of the foam with 10% lignin increased by 14.2% compared to the control, while the foam with 15% lignin had a decreased apparent density. The effect of lignin content on the mechanical properties was similar to that on apparent density. The lignin containing foams were much more thermally stable than the control foam as evidenced by having higher initial decomposition temperature and maximum decomposition rate temperature from the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) profiles. Microwave-assisted liquefaction of rape straw in methanol was conducted to collect the liquefied residues for the extraction of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). The liquefied residue with content of 23.44% from 180°C/7.5 min was used to fibrillate CNCs with dilute alkali (2% NaOH) and hydrogen peroxide (5% H2O2) treatments, followed by ultrasonication for 15 min. The FT-IR spectra and SEM images revealed that the liquefied residue from 180°C/7.5 min exhibited a relatively homogeneous texture and a huge surface with cellulose as core structure. The retained hemicelluloses and other impurities in the liquefied residue were eliminated by 2% NaOH treatment, and the surface and accessibility of the alkali treated sample were significantly increased by 5% H2O2 treatment. Filament fused fabrication (FFF) is an extrusion-based 3D printing technology for manufacturing thermoplastic components. One major obstacle facing 3D printed thermoplastic material is the reduced crystallinity resulting from a fast quench when material exiting the 3D printer hot nozzle solidifies quickly at the low-temperature platform, leading to weak mechanical performance. Here, we report an accelerated annealing strategy with the assistance of microwave heating, aiming to enhance crystallinity and mechanical performance of FFF 3D printed polylactic acid (PLA) composite. We selected naturally abundant cellulose fibers as precursors for producing carbonized cellulose nanofibers (CCNFs), and compounded CCNFs with PLA to produce bi-component filament for 3D printing final composite. After being irradiated with microwave, the embedded CCNFs in composite selectively absorbed microwave energy and generated heat. Subsequently, the localized heat transferred to the adjacent PLA regions, triggering amorphous PLA chains to repack and convert to new crystallites. In this work, annealing conditions, including heating method (i.e., oven annealing vs. microwave annealing), time (0–120 min), and temperature (80 vs. 120 °C), were systematically studied to understand the relevant effects on the resulting parameters including composite crystallinity and tensile strength. Microwave annealing method was also compared with conventional oven annealing method and results shows that microwave annealing significantly reduced the required annealing time to reach the maximum crystallinity and tensile strength. Notably, microwave annealing performed below cold crystallization temperature was exceptionally suitable to develop an optimized crystallinity and tensile strength for 3D printed PLA composite. In this work, ethyl acetate (EA) and trichloromethane (TR) extracts were extracted from Phoebezhennan wood residues and the extracts were then applied to the preparation of UV shielding films (UV-SF). The results revealed that substances including olefins, phenols and alcohols were found in both EA and TR extracts, accounting for about 45% of all the detected substances. The two extracts had similar thermal stability and both had strong UV shielding ability. When the relative percentage of the extract is 1 wt% in solution, the extract solution almost blocked 100% of the UV-B (280–315 nm), and UV-A (315–400 nm). Two kinds of UV-SF were successfully prepared by adding the two extracts into polylactic acid (PLA) matrix. The UV-SF with the addition of 24 wt% of the extractive blocked 100% of the UV-B (280–315 nm) and more than 80% of the UV-A (315–400 nm). Moreover, the UV shielding performance of the UV-SF was still stable even after strong UV irradiation. Though the addition of extracts could somewhat decrease the thermal stability of the film, its effect on the end-use of the film was ignorable. EA extracts had less effect on the tensile properties of the films than TR extracts as the content of the extract reached 18%. The results of this study could provide fundamental information on the potential utilization of the extracts from Phoebe zhennan wood residues on the preparation of biobased UV shielding materials. Sand blasting was proposed as a surface modification approach on the small diameter and thin culm wall bamboo species of Neosinocalamus affinis for the fabrication of laminated bamboo composites. The results revealed that sand blasting modification could almost wipe off the wax and silicons deposited on the green and yellow surfaces by removing or damaging the suberized and siliceous cells, pith membrane, and compact arranged sclereid, resulting in the uncovering of the porous structure. Meanwhile, the surface roughness was also increased by the sand blasting modification, which provided appropriate surface characteristics for resin permeability. The weight loss after sand blasting modification was merely 4.3%, and the internal structure was mostly preserved. Average modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity, and compressive strength of the laminated bamboo composites fabricated from Neosinocalamus affinis were comparable to previous reported similar products and were higher than those from Phyllostachys pubescens and Phyllostachys bissetii. The findings in this study revealed that sand blasting modification could be used as an efficient and environmentally friendly approach on the high yield production of laminated bamboo composites from small diameter and thin culm wall bamboo species. • Sand blasting was efficient in cleaning up non-lignocellulosic substances on bamboo surfaces. • Laminated bamboo composites with yield of 96% was successfully fabricated. • The composites showed comparable mechanical strength with previously reported products. • Sand blasting surface modification was suitable for small diameter bamboo utilization. Soy protein-based adhesives are biodegradable and renewable and are widely used in wood based products. However, the application of soy protein (SP) adhesives is also limited by its poor mildew resistance, water resistance and bonding strength, so it is necessary to find ways to promote the comprehensive performance of SP adhesives. In this study, hydroxymethyl l -tyrosine (TYF) synthesized from l -tyrosine and formaldehyde was used to enhance the mildew resistance and bonding strength of the SP adhesive. The results showed that the cross-linking reactions of TYF and SP molecules and the condensation reactions between an appropriate amount of TYF molecules enhanced the force between SP molecules and made the cross-linked structure more stable and compact, resulting in a significant increase in the bonding strength of the SP adhesive modified by TYF. Compared with the plywood prepared by the SPI adhesive, the SP adhesive modified with 6 wt% TYF had the best bonding performance, and its dry and wet shear strength were increased by 49.3% and 110.1%, respectively. In addition, l -tyrosine Schiff base, which had antibacterial, bactericidal and antiviral effects, was produced by dehydration of TYF molecules, so the mildew resistance of SP adhesives modified by TYF was effectively enhanced. Human health is being threatened by cationic pollutants in wastewater, for example, methylene blue (MB) and Cu(II). Our research team successfully fabricated biofoam adsorbents from recycled bamboo waste that removed cationic pollutants via introducing bamboo fiber sources, i.e. , bamboo fiber, bamboo α-cellulose fiber, and bamboo nanocellulose fiber, into a polyurethane (PU) foam matrix. The biofoam adsorbent with 1 g of nanocellulose (PUN 1 ) presented high removal efficiencies for MB (95.52%) and Cu(II) (100%) in low cationic pollutant concentration aqueous solutions. The biofoam adsorbent with 1 g of bamboo fiber (PUB 1 ) also displayed excellent removal efficiency for MB (98.61%) at pH 11. Meanwhile, 100% removal of Cu(II) was obtained by PUB 1 at pH 7 (initial content = 15 mg/L). Furthermore, the PUN 1 sample had excellent reusability, evidenced by 61.25% removal of MB after five adsorption-desorption cycles, suggesting that PUN 1 is a promising renewable adsorbent for cationic pollutants. Drying cellulose nanofibril (CNF) from aqueous suspensions often leads to aggregated fibril morphology, negatively affecting its performance in ensuing applications. In this work, we introduced a new solvent drying approach to acquire dry CNF from aqueous suspensions and subsequently pyrolyzed the CNF precursor to obtain carbonized CNF (CCNF) without loss of its fibrous morphology. The fibrous CCNF was dispersed homogeneously in polycaprolactone (PCL) thermoplastic resin, greatly enhancing PCL composite tensile performance. After being further mixed with carbon black (CB), the CCNF helped to minimize CB aggregation due to formation of interconnected three-dimensional (3D) structures. The CCNF/CB/PCL composite exhibited superior electrical conductivity ascribed to electrons transporting more efficiently among CB aggregates. The composite is also suitable for applications such as 3D printed electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and deformation sensing. Specifically, the 3D printed EMI shielding composite efficiently absorbed EM radiation in the frequency range of 4-26 GHz, and the 3D printed deformation sensor exhibited excellent sensitivity, durability, and flexibility in monitoring mechanical distortions. Herein, this study sheds light on the development of multifunctional conductive composites embedded with fibrous CCNF from sustainable resources.

Kinetics and thermogravimetric analysis of recent Phoebe zhennan wood (RZ) and ancient buried P. zhennan wood (ABZ) were investigated under a nitrogen atmosphere at different heating rates of 5, 10, 15, and 20 K/min. The activation energy values were estimated based on the Flynn-Wall-Ozawa model-free method, and then, the Coats-Redfern model-fitting method was used to predict the reaction mechanism. The best model of RZ for regions 1 and 2 was based on the diffusional and reaction order (second-order) mechanism, respectively, while a diffusional (Jander equation) mechanism is the best model for ABZ. The change in enthalpy and activation energy of the RZ was lower than that of the ABZ at different conversion rates.
