During winter wheat production, aphids need to be controlled with pesticides for the entire growth period. Controlled-release technology has been regarded as an alternative method for the improvement of pesticide efficiency. This study investigated two types of imidacloprid controlled-release granule (CR-GR): 2% imidacloprid CR-GR and 0.2% imidacloprid pesticide-fertilizer controlled-release granule (PF-CR-GR) when wheat was sown in winter. The release performance, utilization rate, terminal residues in edible parts, control effect on aphids, and achieved winter wheat yield were evaluated for both laboratory experiments and field application. Imidacloprid PF-CR-GR released more quickly in aqueous medium than CR-GR because of its good water solubility. After CR-GR treatments, the concentrations in wheat roots and soil were similar throughout the entire sampling period, and the concentrations in shoots were about 10–20% of those in roots. Imidacloprid was better absorbed when CR-GR was used as root treatment, compared with foliar treatment. Field application showed that imidacloprid CR-GR and PF-CR-GR controlled aphids throughout the entire growth period of winter wheat and improved the wheat yield. These findings identified application of imidacloprid CR-GR and PF-CR-GR on winter wheat as an effective way to enhance the pesticide utilization rate and ensure adequate yield. This paper provides a theoretical basis for the scientific use of pesticides and guides scientific pesticide application.

The order k Voronoi diagram (OkVD) is an effective geometric construction to partition the geographical space into a set of Voronoi regions such that all locations within a Voronoi region share the same k nearest points of interest (POIs). Despite the broad applications of OkVD in various geographical analysis, few efficient algorithms have been proposed to construct OkVD in real road networks. This study proposes a novel algorithm consisting of two stages. In the first stage, a new one-to-all k shortest path finding procedure is proposed to efficiently determine the shortest paths to k nearest POIs for each node. In the second stage, a new recursive procedure is introduced to effectively divide boundary links within different Voronoi regions using the hierarchical tessellation property of the OkVD. To demonstrate the applicability of the proposed OkVD construction algorithm, a case study of place-based accessibility evaluation is carried out. Computational experiments are also conducted on five real road networks with different sizes, and results show that the proposed OkVD algorithm performed significantly better than state-of-the-art algorithms.

In order to improve the mechanical strength and imprinting efficiency, a novel bovine serum albumin (BSA) molecularly imprinted poly(ionic liquid)/calcium alginate composite cryogel membrane (MICM) was prepared. The results of the tensile test indicated that the MICM had excellent mechanical strength which could reach up to 90.00 KPa, 30.30 times higher than the poly (ionic liquid) membrane without calcium alginate; the elongation of it could reach up to 93.70%, 8.28 times higher than the poly (ionic liquid) membrane without calcium alginate. The MICM had a very high welling ratio of 1026.56% and macropore porosity of 62.29%, which can provide effective mass transport of proteins. More remarkably, it had a very high adsorption capacity of 485.87 mg g−1 at 20 °C and 0.66 mg mL−1 of the initial concentration of BSA. Moreover, MICM also had good selective and competitive recognition toward BSA, exhibiting potential utility in protein separation. This work can provide a potential method to prepare the protein-imprinted cryogel membrane with both high mechanical strength and imprinting efficiency.

Dendrobium is a traditional Chinese herb with anti-diabetic effects and has diverse bibenzyls as well as phenanthrenes. Little is known about Dendrobium polyphenols anti-diabetic activities, so, a rich-polyphenols extract of D. loddigesii (DJP) was used for treatment of diabetic db/db mice; the serum biochemical index and tissue appearance were evaluated. In order to gain an insight into the anti-diabetic mechanism, the oxidative stress index, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and gut microbiota modulation were determined by ELISA, immunohistochemistry or high throughput sequencing 16S rRNA gene. The results revealed that DJP had the effects to decrease the blood glucose, body weight, low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels and increase insulin (INS) level in the mice. DJP improved the mice fatty liver and diabetic nephropathy. DJP showed the anti-oxidative abilities to reduce the malondialdehyde (MDA) level and increase the contents of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) as well as glutathione (GSH). DJP exerted the anti-inflammatory effects of decreasing expression of IL-6 and TNF-α. After treatment of DJP, the intestinal flora balance of the mice was ameliorated, increasing Bacteroidetes to Firmicutes ratios as well as the relative abundance of Prevotella/Akkermansia and reducing the relative abundance of S24-7/Rikenella/Escherichia coli. The function’s prediction of gut microbiota indicated that the microbial compositions involved carbohydrate metabolism or lipid metabolism were changed. This study revealed for the first time that DJP improves the mice symptoms of diabetes and complications, which might be due to the effects that DJP induced the decrease of inflammation as well as oxidative stress and improvement of intestinal flora balance.

BACKGROUND:Abnormal expression of serum TGF-β1 was found in patients with diabetic nephropathy. However, the association of TGF-β1 with the risk of diabetic nephropathy remains unknown. The present study was undertaken to investigate whether such an association exists. METHODS:We searched the Chinese VIP, Wangfang, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, PubMed, Embase, and Google Scholar databases for relevant studies and extracted all eligible data. Stata12 software was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS:Nine reports met our criteria and were used for data extraction. There were 264 patients and 227 healthy controls from qualified reports in this meta-analysis. AIMS: To determine the spectrum of renal lesions in patients with kidney involvement in non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) by renal biopsy. METHODS: The clinical features and histological findings at the time of the renal biopsy were assessed for each patient. RESULTS: We identified 20 patients with NHL and renal involvement, and the diagnosis of NHL was established following the kidney biopsy in 18 (90%) patients. The types of NHL include the following: chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma (n = 8), diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (n = 4), T/NK cell lymphoma (n = 3), lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma (n = 2), cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (n = 1), mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma (n = 1) and mantle cell lymphoma (n = 1). All presented with proteinuria, and 15 patients had impaired renal function. The pathological findings included (1) membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis-like pattern in seven patients; (2) crescent glomerulonephritis in four; (3) minimal-change disease in three, and glomeruli without specific pathological abnormalities in three; (4) intraglomerular large B-cell lymphoma in one; (5) intracapillary monoclonal IgM deposits in one; (6) primary diffuse large B-cell lymphoma of the kidneys in one; and (7) lymphoma infiltration of the kidney in eight patients. CONCLUSION: A wide spectrum of renal lesions can be observed in patients with NHL, and NHL may be first proven by renal biopsies for evaluation of kidney injury or proteinuria. Renal biopsy is necessary to establish the underlying cause of renal involvement in NHL.

The Space-time prism (STP) is a key concept in time geography for analyzing human activity-travel behavior under various Space-time constraints. Most existing time-geographic studies use a straightforward algorithm to construct STPs in road networks by using two one-to-all shortest path searches. However, this straightforward algorithm can introduce considerable computational overhead, given the fact that accessible links in a STP are generally a small portion of the whole network. To address this issue, an efficient geo-computational algorithm, called NTP-A*, is proposed. The proposed NTP-A* algorithm employs the A* and branch-and-bound techniques to discard inaccessible links during two shortest path searches, and thereby improves the STP construction performance. Comprehensive computational experiments are carried out to demonstrate the computational advantage of the proposed algorithm. Several implementation techniques, including the label-correcting technique and the hybrid link-node labeling technique, are discussed and analyzed. Experimental results show that the proposed NTP-A* algorithm can significantly improve STP construction performance in large-scale road networks by a factor of 100, compared with existing algorithms.

Being one of the renal replacement therapies, peritoneal dialysis (PD) maintains around 15% of end-stage kidney disease patients’ lives; however, complications such as peritoneal fibrosis and ultrafiltration failure during long-term PD compromise its application. Previously, we established a sodium hypochlorite (NaClO)-induced peritoneal fibrosis porcine model, which helped to bridge the rodent model toward pre-clinical human peritoneal fibrosis research. In this study, the peritoneal equilibration test (PET) was established to evaluate instant functional changes in the peritoneum in the pig model. Similar to observations from long-term PD patients, increasing small solutes transport and loss of sodium sieving were observed. Mechanistic investigation from both in vivo and in vitro data suggested that disruption of cytoskeleton induced by excessive reactive oxygen species defected intracellular transport of aquaporin 1, this likely resulted in the disappearance of sodium sieving upon PET. Functional interference of aquaporin 1 on free water transport would result in PD failure in patients.

Background: Pathologic studies play an important role in evaluating patients with Alport syndrome besides genotyping. Difficulties still exist in diagnosing Alport syndrome (AS), and misdiagnosis is a not-so-rare event, even in adult patient evaluated with renal biopsy. Methods: We used nested case-control study to investigate 52 patients previously misdiagnosed and 52 patients initially diagnosed in the China Alport Syndrome Treatments and Outcomes Registry e-system. Results: We found mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis (MsPGN, 26.9%) and focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS, 19.2%) were the most common misdiagnosis. FSGS was the most frequent misdiagnosis in female X-linked AS (fXLAS) patients (34.8%), and MsPGN in male X-linked AS (mXLAS) patients (41.2%). Previous misdiagnosed mXLAS patients (13/17, 76.5%) and autosomal recessive AS (ARAS) patients (8/12, 66.7%) were corrected after a second renal biopsy. While misdiagnosed fXLAS patients (18/23, 78.3%) were corrected after a family member diagnosed (34.8%) or after rechecking electronic microscopy and/or collagen-IV alpha-chains immunofluresence study (COL-IF) (43.5%) during follow-up. With COL-IF as an additional criterion for AS diagnosis, we found that patients with less than 3 criteria reached have increased risk of misdiagnosis (3.29-fold for all misdiagnosed AS patients and 3.90-fold for fXLAS patients). Conclusion: We emphasize timely and careful study of electronic microscopy and COL-IF in pathologic evaluation of AS patients. With renal and/or skin COL-IF as additional criterion, 3 diagnosis criteria reached are the cutoff for diagnosing AS pathologically. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objectives of the study are to investigate the clinical features and renal outcomes in lupus patients with diffuse crescentic glomerulonephritis (DCGN). Ninety-four DCGN lupus patients were enrolled. Their clinical features and renal outcomes were investigated. There were 84 females and 10 males, with a mean age of 27.9 ± 10.7 years old. They represented: hypertension in 73 cases (77.7%), rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis in 62 cases (66.0%), 46 cases (48.9%) with nephritic syndrome, 35 (37.2%) gross hematuria, and 14 cases (14.9%) with uremic syndrome needed dialysis therapy. There were 25 cases received repeated renal biopsy. Their histological examination showed the decreasing of active lesions and the increasing chronic lesions. All patients were more than 6 months follow-up, and 79 patients (84.0%) were more than 12 months follow-up. At the first time of follow-up (3 months), the renal function, proteinuria, and anemia were improved significantly in all of cases received intensive immunosuppressive therapy. At the last time of follow-up (56.1 ± 18.8 months), only four patients eventually developed to the end-stage renal failure and five died with normal renal function. The lupus patients with DCGN presented more severe clinical syndromes, which were similar to those patients of type II of DCGN. Background:The BRAF mutation V600E (BRAFV600E) is the most common genetic alteration in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), while overexpression of X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis (XIAP) has been found in various tumors. Both of these events are implicated in carcinogenesis, tumor progression, recurrence, etc. There are few reports, however, of the BRAFV600Emutation and XIAP overexpression in PTC patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of the BRAFV600Emutation in PTC and its relationship to clinicopathological parameters and the expression of XIAP.Methods:Genomic DNA was extracted from 123 paraffin-embedded PTC tumor tissue samples and amplified for analysis of the V600E mutation in exon 15 of the BRAF gene by polymerase chain reaction. XIAP expression was examined by immunohistochemical methods in 46 PTCs, 18 benign nodular goiters, and 10 Hashimoto''s thyroiditis samples.Results:The BRAFV600Emutation was found in 34.1% of PTC, and was especially prevalent in the classic type. BRAFV600Ewas significantly correlated with younger age at diagnosis (p= 0.026), tumor size (p= 0.009), and histological variants (p= 0.024). There was a trend towards association with extrathyroidal invasion (p= 0.067). By logistic regression analysis, a significant relationship was found between tumor size and the BRAFV600Emutation (p= 0.03). XIAP was expressed in 82.6% of PTCs, which was a higher percentage than observed in the group of benign thyroid disorders (35.7%, p< 0.001). Neither the intensity (p= 0.611) nor the extent (p= 0.723) of XIAP staining was correlated with the presence of BRAFV600Ein PTC patients.Conclusions:These data indicate that BRAFV600Eis associated some of the aggressive clinicopathological features of PTC including younger age at diagnosis, larger tumor size, and classic histological type, as well as also extrathyroidal invasion. XIAP-positive staining was more prevalent in PTCs than in the benign thyroid disorders. Although BRAFV600Eand XIAP expression are commonly seen in PTC, their presence together seems unrelated. Abstract  Wolfram syndrome (WFS), also known as DIDMOAD, is an infrequent cause of diabetes mellitus. WFS is an autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disease characterized by various clinical manifestations such as diabetes mellitus, optic atrophy, diabetes insipidus, deafness, neurological symptoms, renal tract abnormalities, psychiatric disorders, and gonadal disorders. The majority of patients with WFS carry the loss of function mutations in the WFS1 gene. The exons 2–8 of the WFS1 gene from one Chinese WFS patient were amplified by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), subcloning techniques and direct sequence determination was applied to the amplified fragments. The compound heterozygous mutation of a 3-bp (GAC) deletion (V434del) and another compound heterozygous mutation (G→N)(W666X) in exon 8 of WFS1 gene was identified in the patient. Other seventeen members of her family were investigated. Four cases with heterozygotes had been found through screening for the mutation V434del and five cases for the mutation W666X in the whole family. Background. Alport syndrome (AS) is an inherited nephropathy characterized by glomerular basement membrane (GBM) abnormalities due to mutations in the type IV collagen genes. Through immunofluorescence analysis, the absence of α3(IV), α4(IV) and α5(IV) chains within the GBM has been shown in the majority of AS cases. In some atypical AS cases, however, staining of the GBM with antibodies against the α3(IV), α4(IV) and α5(IV) chains appeared normal. In this study, we studied these atypical AS cases by quantitative analysis of the expression of type IV collagen subchains in GBM.Methods. Twelve patients diagnosed with AS, yet having normal staining for α3(IV) and α5(IV) chains in the GBM, were recruited. Quantitative analysis of type IV collagen subchains in the GBM was performed using confocal microscopy and immunofluorescence double label techniques.Results. The absolute amounts of α3(IV), α4(IV) and α5(IV) were significantly lower in AS patients than that in normal subjects, associated with up-regulated expression of type IV collagen in GBM. It was found that eight cases had decreased ratios of α3(IV)/IV, α4(IV)/IV and α5(IV)/IV in the GBM simultaneously; one had reduced levels of α3(IV)/IV and α5(IV)/IV but had a normal level of α4(IV)/IV, and one had reduced α3(IV)/IV with normal α4(IV)/IV and α5(IV)/IV levels. The remaining two patients had normal ratios of α3(IV)/IV, α4(IV)/IV and α5(IV)/IV.Conclusions. Confocal analysis demonstrated for the first time that the ratios of α3(IV)/IV, α4(IV)/IV and α5(IV)/IV in the GBM decreased in patients with AS, even though routine immunofluorescence staining for α(IV) chains appeared normal. To know the mechanism of ammonia assimilation in non-heading Chinese cabbage (Brassica campestrishL. ssp.chinensis(L.) Makino) leaves regulated by chitosan (CTS), a CTS-binding protein was isolated from non-heading Chinese cabbage leaves using the chitosan affinity chromatography approach and this CTS-binding protein was partially characterized. The profile of the 53.1 kDa purified protein on sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was compared with the native molecular weight of 106.5 kDa, which indicated that the purified protein was a dimer with identical subunits. After isoelectric focusing, a band was obtained at pH 8.25. The agglutination test and periodic acid-Schiff staining further revealed that the protein was a glycoprotein with lectin activity. Moreover, the purified protein contained 17.4% (w/w) neutral carbohydrate and 82.56% (w/w) protein. The comparison of this protein and the 67 kDa CTS-binding protein isolated previously fromRubusculture tissue exhibited some differences in characterization. According to results of peptide mass fingerprinting analysis, the protein purified in the present study does not show any similarity with any protein in the protein data bank.
