Summary: A 2‐channel LED driver is presented herein, which possesses non‐pulsating input current and automatic current sharing. There are 4 features in the proposed LED driver. First, due to an input inductor, the input current is non‐pulsating, which makes the life of the renewable energy module or input capacitor longer. Second, each coupled inductor winding has a capacitor connected in series. Therefore, the dc magnetizing bias current is zero, and this can improve the iron core utilization, making the core loss and size reduced. Third, the number of LED channels can be extended by increasing windings. Fourth, the LED currents can be almost identical even if there are different LED numbers in LED strings. Summary: In this study, an extensible 2‐phase interleaved high step‐up converter with automatic current balance is presented. This converter uses coupled inductors and energy‐transferring capacitors to improve the voltage gain of the traditional 2‐phase interleaved boost converter as well as employs these energy transferring capacitors to do automatic current balance. Furthermore, the voltage gain can be enhanced not only by adjusting the turns ratio but also by increasing the numbers of phases, diodes, and energy‐transferring capacitors. Therefore, it can be used in high input current and high step‐up voltage applications. In this paper, the basic operating principles of the proposed converter are described and analyzed, and finally, its effectiveness is demonstrated by experiment. In addition, the field‐programmable gate array, named EP13T100C8N and manufactured by Altera Co, is used as a control kernel, and an experimental prototype, with input voltage of 12 V, output voltage of 200 V, and rated output power of 200 W, is given to provide the effectiveness of the proposed converter. In this paper, a nonisolated two-phase interleaved LED driver with capacitive current sharing is presented. In the high step-down voltage applications, the dc–dc converter with a high step-down voltage conversion ratio is usually used. Recently, a high step-down converter, named ultrahigh step-down converter, has been presented. As compared with the nonisolated tapped-inductor buck converter, the ultrahigh step-down converter has not only a higher voltage step-down gain but also a lower voltage spike. On the other hand, in the high-current applications, a multiple phase structure is preferable. Therefore, in this paper, a novel expandable two-phase interleaved ultrahigh step-down converter with automatic current balance is presented, which is derived from the existing single-phase ultrahigh step-down converter. There are four main advantages of the proposed converter. First, the step-down voltage gain is improved. Therefore, the turns ratio of each phase can be decreased. Second, due to the charge balance of the energy-transferring capacitor, the proposed two-phase ultrahigh step-down converter possesses an automatic current balance. In this paper, a single-switch coupled-inductor-based two-channel light-emitting diode (LED) driver with a passive regenerative snubber is presented. In the proposed LED driver, the energy-transferring capacitor is not only used to step up the voltage gain but also to achieve the current balance among LED strings. Moreover, a passive regenerative snubber is added not only to recycle the leakage inductance energy but also to improve the voltage gain. As compared with the prior work, only one switch is required. Thus, the configuration of the proposed LED driver is simpler. Since the proposed LED driver has a higher voltage gain than the prior work, the turns ratio of the proposed LED driver can be lower. In this study, a new bridgeless buck power factor correction (PFC) rectifier is presented. The proposed buck PFC rectifier is designed to operate in the discontinuous conduction mode (DCM). Because of the DCM operation, the control scheme of the proposed buck PFC rectifier is simple and easy, and the reverse recovery problem of the diodes can be alleviated. Because the input current follows the input voltage naturally, the current loop circuit is not required. Thus, only the traditional voltage-mode control is employed to sense the output voltage, and a suitable control effort for the proposed buck PFC rectifier is generated to drive the power switches. Consequently, the output voltage of the proposed buck PFC rectifier can be kept at a desired value. In this paper, a nonisolated two-channel light-emitting diode (LED) driver with automatic current balance and zero-voltage switching (ZVS) is presented. In this LED driver, a dc-blocking capacitor is connected with one side of the coupled inductor. Therefore, based on the ampere–second balance, a current source is generated with the average value of the positive current identical to the absolute average value of the negative current. Accordingly, the LED currents can be balanced naturally without extra active components or current sharing transformer. Consequently, the circuit components can keep at a low count. In addition, the proposed LED driver can achieve ZVS turn-on. Thus, the switching loss can be decreased. Above all, the proposed two-channel LED driver can be extended to a multichannel LED driver. In this paper, a novel four-phase interleaved high step-down converter is presented. The proposed converter can provide an extremely high step-down voltage conversion ratio within a moderate duty cycle. There are four main advantages of the proposed converter. First, the blocking capacitors can store energy as usual. Therefore, they are used as voltage sources to reduce the input voltage as well as to reduce the switch voltage stresses. Second, due to the charge balance of the dc blocking capacitors, the converter possesses an automatic uniform current sharing characteristic of the interleaved phases without adopting any extra circuitry. Third, due to the phase shift between the interleaved phases, the architecture provides a low output current ripple. Fourth, the number of phases can be expanded or reduced to any even phases; therefore, the converter has a wide range of applications. Finally, the operating principles and analysis of this architecture are given, and an experimental prototype is also provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed converter. A nonisolated coupled-inductor-based high step-down converter with zero dc magnetizing inductance current and nonpulsating output current is presented. Since the dc magnetizing inductance current is zero, the magnetizing current can be positive and negative. Therefore, the entire core B–H loop can be used, ranging from the first quadrant to the third quadrant. That is, the utilization of the coupled inductor can be improved and, hence, the core loss can also be reduced. Moreover, due to a discrete output inductor, the proposed converter also features a nonpulsating output current, which makes the output current ripple smaller. A novel isolated high voltage-boosting converter, derived from the traditional forward converter, is presented in this paper. As compared with the traditional forward converter, the demagnetizing winding of the transformer in the proposed converter is used not only to demagnetize but also to improve the voltage conversion ratio. Therefore, the duty cycle is not limited, and the utilization of the transformer, also called coupled inductor, can be increased also. Furthermore, the proposed converter maintains the advantage of possessing a non-pulsating output current, leading to a small output voltage ripple. Moreover, by applying one additional voltage-boosting winding to the transformer, the voltage conversion ratio can be significantly improved. In addition, an active clamp circuit is employed in the proposed converter to reduce the voltage stress of the main switch, caused by the leakage inductance in the transformer, and the switches can achieve zero-voltage switching. Finally, the analysis of operating principles, choice of the turns, turns ratio, core size, and each wire size of the coupled inductor are described in detail, and the experimental results with a prototype with 12-V input voltage, 100-V output voltage, and 100-W output power are provided to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed converter. In this paper, an ultrahigh step-down converter is presented, which combines one coupled inductor and one energytransferring capacitor. The corresponding voltage conversion ratio is much lower than that of the traditional synchronously rectified (SR) buck converter, and the proposed converter can achieve extremely low output voltage with an appropriate duty ratio. Moreover, there are three major merits in the proposed converter. One merit is that the voltage conversion ratio of the proposed converter is linear, thereby making control quite easy. Another merit is that if one of the switches fails or is abnormally controlled, a high voltage does not appear in the output terminal, so the output load can be protected. The other merit is that the proposed converter can be driven using the existing SR buck pulse-width modulation control integrated circuit. As generally acknowledged, the high step-up dc-dc converter is widely used in the sustainable energy system as the front-end stage of the dc-ac converter. Therefore, a high step-up converter combining one coupling inductor and two bootstrap capacitors, together with the active voltage-clamping circuit which pumps portion of the leakage inductance energy to the output, is presented herein. By doing so, the efficiency at light load can be upgraded greatly, and hence tends to be flat between the minimum load and the rated load. In this paper, a novel voltage-boosting converter is presented, which combines one charge pump and one coupled inductor with the turns ratio. The corresponding voltage gain is greater than that of the existing step-up converter combining KY and buck-boost converters. Since the proposed converter possesses an output inductor, the output current is nonpulsating. In this paper, novel high voltage-boosting converters are presented. By changing the connection position of the anode of the diode and by using different pulse-width-modulation control strategies, different voltage conversion ratios can be obtained. These converters are constructed based on bootstrap capacitors and boost inductors. Above all, two boost inductors with different values, connected in series, can still make the proposed converters work appropriately. Furthermore, although there are three switches in each converter, only one half-bridge gate driver and one low-side gate driver are needed, but no isolated gate driver would be needed. A photovoltaic energy conversion system, constructed by high step-up converter with hybrid maximum power point tracking (HMPPT), is presented. A voltage converter with a high voltage conversion ratio is proposed, which is simple in circuit and easy in control. After this, such a converter operating with a suitable initial duty cycle of the pulsewidth-modulated (PWM) control signal, together with the proposed HMPPT algorithm combining the fractional open-circuit voltage method and the incremental conductance method, is applied to the photovoltaic energy conversion system. By doing so, not only the maximum power point tracking speed can be increased, but also the oscillation around the maximum power point can be reduced. Aside from these, the field programmable gate array (FPGA) is used as a control kernal of the overall system, so as to realize the HMPPT and fully digitalized control. In this letter, a buck-boost converter, i.e., 2D converter with a positive output voltage, is presented, which combines the KY converter and the traditional synchronously rectified (SR) buck converter. By doing so, the problem in voltage bucking of the KY converter can be solved, thereby increasing the application capability of the KY converter. Since such a converter operates in continuous conduction mode inherently, it possesses the nonpulsating output current, thereby not only decreasing the current stress on the output capacitor but also reducing the output voltage ripple. Above all, both the KY converter and the SR buck converter, combined into a buck-boost converter with no right-half plane zero, use the same power switches, thereby causing the required circuit to be compact and the corresponding cost to be down. In this paper, a novel step-up converter is presented, where the charge pump concept, combined with the traditional boost converter structure, is utilized. Although two inductors are used in such a converter, the difference in value between the two inductors affects the regulation performance of this converter slightly. Furthermore, the behavior of this converter is similar to the traditional boost converter, and hence, the control of this converter can be realized easily. Above all, the energy stored in the two inductors, connected in series with the energy stored in the charge pump capacitor and the input voltage, is released to the load during the demagnetization period. In this paper, a resonant voltage divider (RVD) is presented with the fixed switching frequency and used as a bus converter. The proposed RVD without any control loop embedded can reach very high efficiency from the light load to the rated load, especially for the light load. In addition, the bidirectional operation of the RVD is taken into consideration, so the RVD not only can transfer energy to the voltage-regulated module (VRM) but also can reversely transfer the energy to the dc bus during the download transient period of the VRM. However, the RVD has a serious drawback that a large surge current at startup causes components to be saturated or destroyed. Consequently, how to reduce such a current based on the proposed variable switching frequency at startup is also taken into account. In this paper, the bidirectional operation of the RVD and how to suppress the startup surge current are illustrated in detail, along with some simulated and experimental results to demonstrate its effectiveness. A simple current sharing control technique for the switching power supply is presented herein, whose basic concept is that the control effort created from the voltage loop is finely tuned by the control effort created from the current sharing loop based on the proposed phase link so as not only to obtain the desired output voltage but also to make the load current distributed among phases as evenly as possible. Such a control method is not only without any current sharing bus as compared with the traditional current sharing methods, but also suitable for multiple phases under the condition that any one phase among multiple phases fails. Moreover, based on phase link, there is no divider used, as compared with the traditional average current method, and hence, the number of logic elements in the field-programmable gate array (FPGA) can be reduced. In this paper, a fully digitalized current sharing strategy without any analog-to-digital converter (ADC) is presented and applied to light-emitting diode (LED) lighting. By doing so, the cost for digital control is reduced significantly due to no ADC used. Aside from this, LED dimming is easy to realize. Above all, the proposed current sharing method has the capability of resisting variations in input voltage and component parameter. A simple current-sharing control technique for the switching power supply is presented herein, which is based on the concept of the differential-mode transformer and which makes the load current evenly shared well among phases all over the line voltage and load current ranges. This current-sharing structure is very simple, and it makes the efficiency relatively high at light load, which is quite suitable for industrial applications with standby power considered. In this circuit, a synchronously rectified switch is used to further upgrade the efficiency, and the coupling output inductors in copolarity are utilized to decrease the phase current ripples. A multifunction circuit is presented herein and applied to a synchronously rectified flyback converter, with the circuit not only playing the role of an LC snubber but also detecting the zero crossing of the current to reduce switching loss and feeding the peripheral circuit. Hence, such a converter has high efficiency all over the operating range and, together with one front-end power-factor-correction ac–dc converter, is applied to feeding a LED streetlight. In this paper, a simple dimming control is presented and applied to a cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL). Traditionally, the digital dimming takes back-and-fro start and cutoff of the CCFL, thereby causing current spike and hence reducing the life of the CCFL. Consequently, to overcome these problems, a dimming strategy is presented according to the frequency shift. Moreover, a full-bridge phase-shift resonant inverter is utilized to power the CCFL. In this letter, a KY boost converter is presented, which is the KY converter combined with the traditional synchronously rectified (SR) boost converter. Such a converter has continuous input and output inductor currents, different from the traditional SR boost converter, and has a larger voltage conversion ratio than the traditional SR boost converter does, and hence, this converter is very suitable for low-ripple applications. A new voltage-boosting converter, combining a charge pump and a coupling inductor, together with a passive voltage-clamping circuit which pumps part of the leakage inductance energy to the output, is presented herein. This paper presents three types of low-side gate drivers to drive n-channel power metal--oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs). Most important of all, each gate driver has a single positive-voltage source fed, and any one of these three types is used according to applications. In addition, the main purpose of the proposed gate drivers is to reduce the losses created from power MOSFETs. A novel voltage-bucking/boosting converter, named as KY buck-boost converter (i.e., 2D converter), is presented herein. Unlike the traditional buck-boost converter, this converter possesses fast transient responses, similar to the behavior of the buck converter with synchronous rectification. In addition, it possesses the nonpulsating output current, thereby not only decreasing the current stress on the output capacitor but also reducing the output voltage ripple. In this paper, an interleaved ac-dc converter based on current tracking without any current sharing required is presented and applied to a two-phase flyback converter. This is realized using two critical-conduction-mode (CRM) pulsewidth-modulated chips, together with a field-programmable gate array technique. By doing so, not only are the total harmonic distortion and the power factor improved but the output power is also upgraded. In this paper, a voltage-boosting converter, named KY converter (i.e., 1-plus-D converter), is presented. Unlike the traditional nonisolated boost converter, this converter possesses fast load transient responses, which is similar to the buck converter with synchronous rectification. In addition, it possesses nonpulsating output current, thereby not only decreasing the current stress on the output capacitor but also reducing the output voltage ripple. A LED dimming circuit, together with the KY converter, is presented, which is controlled based on a field-programmable gate array. Via the proposed feedback control strategy, the voltage across the linear current regulator is reduced so as to upgrade the efficiency of the overall system, with the proposed maximum error selection based on a suitable voltage turning on the diode. Aside from this, each LED string takes direct dimming, and is powered by the KY converter, which has an output inductor and hence upgrades the life of the output capacitor. A novel multi-output pulse-width-modulated control scheme based on time sharing is presented and applied to a two-output forward converter. Unlike the traditional two outputs, the main voltage output and the auxiliary voltage output can be controlled independently via two different switching periods and controllers, by inserting one auxiliary switch into the circuit. Put simply, the main turn-on time is used to control the main switch, the auxiliary turn-on time is used to control the auxiliary switch, and there are several auxiliary turn-on times within one main turn-on time. By this means, two stabilised output voltages are obtained with good cross-regulation. The prototype is verified by a 24 V input, the main voltage output, which has a rated output voltage of 56 V and a rated output power of 50 W, and the auxiliary output, which has a rated output voltage of 44 V and a rated output power of 40 W. To overcome the traditional buck converter, which is difficult to achieve a high step-down gain with an appropriate duty cycle, a coupled-inductor-based step-down converter, named ultrahigh step-down converter, is proposed by Hwu et al. [11]. As compared with the buck converter, the ultrahigh step-down converter can achieve a much higher step-down gain, which can be determined by not only the duty cycle but also the turns ratio of the coupled inductor. However, the ultrahigh step-down converter is designed at a fixed input voltage of 48 V. In the telecommunication applications, the high dc bus voltage varies in a wide range, not kept at a fixed nominal voltage of 48 V. The experimental results show that as the input voltage increases, the efficiency of the ultrahigh step-down converter decreases. Therefore, in this paper, an improved ultrahigh step-down converter with a wide input voltage range is presented. According to the topology exchange, the voltage gain can be changed to a suitable one when the input voltage changes. By doing so, as compared with the ultrahigh step-down converter [11], the duty cycle of the proposed converter can be extended, and hence the efficiencies of the proposed converter can be improved. In this paper, a high step-down bidirectional converter, utilizing one coupled inductor and two energy-transferring capacitors, is presented. In the step-down mode, the capacitor is connected between input voltage and coupled inductor, which plays a role to step down the input voltage. Therefore, the corresponding voltage conversion ratio is much lower than that of the traditional buck converter and also can be lower than that of the tapped-inductor buck converter. Moreover, the output voltage varies with the duty cycle linearly, making control easier. In the step-up mode, one capacitor is first charged by the coupled inductor, and then releases the energy along with the coupled inductor and the other capacitor connected in series.
