Background: Toxoplasma gondii coinfection can modify host immune responses and the severity and spread of other parasites. We investigated how T. gondii and Trichinella spiralis infections counter-regulate each other's immune responses. Methods: The parasite burden, the expression of T. gondii rhoptry kinase ROP18 and T. spiralis putative serine protease (TsSP), the IgG1 and IgG2a responses, besides histopathological and immunohistochemical staining with iNOS and arginase were used to evaluate the dynamics of coinfection. Results: Through their effects on host immune responsiveness, coinfection with T. gondii modified the virulence of T. spiralis infection. Coinfected animals with high and low doses of T. gondii demonstrated significant reductions in the T. spiralis burden of 75.2% and 68.2%, respectively. TsSP expression was downregulated in both groups by 96.2% and 86.7%, whereasROP18 expression was downregulated by only 6% and10.6%, respectively. In coinfected mice, elevated levels of T. gondii-specific IgG2a antibodies were detected. Th1 induced by T. gondii inhibits the Th2 response to T. spiralis in coinfected animals with high iNOS expression andlow-arginine1 expression. Conclusion: T. gondii infection induces a shift toward a Th1-type immune response while suppressing a helminth-specific Th2 immune response, paving the way for developing novel vaccines and more efficient control strategies. Multiphase machines with a prime number of phases (five and seven) have shown better torque density than machines with other phase numbers. Unfortunately, these machines require a special stator design. Hence, this article proposes general rewinding techniques to obtain a five-phase winding from the existing standard three-phase stator frames. The proposed rewinding techniques are applied to construct a five-phase star-connected synchronous reluctance machine (SynRM 1) and a novel combined star-pentagon winding (SynRM 2). Simple mathematical formulations are introduced to compute the equivalent winding factor. The performance of five-phase SynRMs is analyzed using two-dimensional Ansys Maxwell transient simulations under the same copper volume for both healthy and faulty cases. SynRM 1 and 2 provide 6.56% and 13.35% higher torque compared to the three-phase SynRM at rated current and at optimal current angle. The torque ripple is decreased by 17% and 30%, respectively. Moreover, SynRM 1 and 2 offer a better performance at the faulty case; e.g., at one phase opened, the average torque of SynRM 1 and 2 is 82% and 108% higher compared to the three-phase SynRM. This paper investigates the performance of synchronous reluctance motors when the stator is equipped with a combined star–delta winding layout. The conventional star winding is used as a benchmark in this study to compare different possible single-layer winding layouts. Among these different winding layouts, those which maximize the fundamental magneto-motive force component are selected. A simple mathematical formula is then derived to calculate the equivalent winding factor for different shares between star and delta subwindings. It has been proved that for the same copper volume and line current magnitude, the star–delta connection can offer an enhancement in the torque density of approximately 5.2% over the conventional star case under rated conditions. However, this gain is affected by the employed number of poles and stator slots. On the other hand, the effect of the winding layout on either power factor or core loss can be merely neglected over a wide range of speeds and currents. Nevertheless, the machine efficiency under a combined star–delta connection is relatively improved under light loading as a result to the machine torque/current ratio enhancement. This paper compares four prototype Synchronous Reluctance Motors (SynRMs) having an identical geometry of iron lamination stacks in the stator and rotor. Two different stator winding layouts are employed: a conventional three-phase star connection and a combined star-delta winding. In addition, two rotors are considered: a conventional rotor without magnets and a rotor with ferrite magnets. The performance of the four SynRMs is evaluated using a two-dimensional (2D) Finite Element Model (FEM). For the same copper volume and current, the combined star-delta-connected stator with Permanent Magnets (PMs) in the rotor corresponds to an approximately 22% increase in the output torque at rated current and speed compared to the conventional machine. This improvement is mainly thanks to adding ferrite PMs in the rotor as well as to the improved winding factor of the combined star-delta winding. The torque gain increases up to 150% for low current. Moreover, the rated efficiency is 93.60% compared to 92.10% for the conventional machine. On the other hand, the impact on the power factor and losses of SynRM when using the star-delta windings instead of the star windings is merely negligible. This paper analyzes and compares the synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM) performance for a conventional star winding and for a combined star-delta connected winding under healthy and faulty conditions. The finite element method is used to simulate the SynRM characteristics in case of normal star and in case of combined star-delta connected windings. For the healthy case, it was found that for the same current, the SynRM output power increased by about 5% for the star-delta connected windings compared with the conventional star connection. Moreover, the efficiency increased slightly by 0.20%. Probably the strongest advantage of the combined star-delta winding is observed when a phase fault occurs. When one phase is missing, for the same current, the star-delta connected motor keeps 80% of the rated torque in the healthy case, while the star connected motor only keeps 40%. Furthermore, the torque ripple of the star wound machine is extremely high in case of a missing phase, compared to the star-delta wound machine. The rotor design of Synchronous Reluctance Motors (SynRMs) has a large effect on their efficiency, torque density and torque ripple. In order to achieve a good compromise between these three goals, an optimized rotor geometry is necessary. A finite element method (FEM) is a good tool for the optimization. However, the computation time is an obstacle as there are many geometrical parameters to be optimized. The flux-barrier widths and angles are the two most crucial parameters for the SynRM output torque and torque ripple. This paper proposes an easy-to-use set of parametrized equations to select appropriate values for these two rotor parameters. With these equations, the reader can design a SynRM of distributed windings with a low torque ripple and with a better average torque. The methodology is valid for a wide range of SynRMs. To check the validity of the proposed equations, the sensitivity analysis for the variation of these two parameters on the SynRM torque and torque ripple is carried out. In addition, the analysis in this paper gives insight into the behavior of the machine as a function of these two parameters. Furthermore, the torque and torque ripple of SynRMs having a rotor with three, four and five flux-barriers are compared with three literature approaches. The comparison shows that the proposed equations are effective in choosing the flux-barrier angles and widths for low torque ripple and better average torque. The direct coil cooling method is one of the existing cooling techniques for electric machines with concentrated windings, in which cooling tubes of conductive material are inserted between the windings. In such cases, eddy current losses are induced in those cooling tubes because of the time variant magnetic field. To compute the cooling tubes losses, either a transient finite element simulation (mostly based on commercial software), or a full analytical method, which is more complex to be constructed, is required. Instead, this paper proposes a simple and an accurate combined semi-analytical-finite element method to calculate the losses of electric machines having cooling tubes. The 2D magnetostatic solution of the magnetic field is obtained e.g., using the free package "FEMM". Then, the eddy current losses in the tubes are computed using simple analytical equations. In addition, the iron core losses could be obtained. In order to validate the proposed method, two cases are investigated. In Case 1, a six-toothed stator of a switched reluctance machine (SRM), without rotor, is employed in which six cooling tubes are used while in Case 2 a complete rotating SRM is studied. The proposed method is validated by a 2D transient simulation in the commercial software "ANSYS Maxwell" and also by experimental measurements. Epigenetics involved in multiple normal cellular processes. Previous research have revealed the role of hepatitis C virus infection in accelerating methylation process and affecting response to treatment in chronic hepatitis patients. This work aimed to elucidate the role of promoter methylation (PM) in response to antiviral therapy, and its contribution to the development of fibrosis through hepatocarcinogenesis-related genes. A total of 159 chronic hepatitis Egyptian patients versus 100 healthy control group were included. The methylation profile of a panel 9 genes (SFRP1, p14, p73, APC, DAPK, RASSF1A, LINE1, O6MGMT, and p16) was detected in patients' plasma using methylation-specific polymerase chain reaction (MSP). Clinical and laboratory findings were gathered for patients with combined pegylated interferon and ribavirin antiviral therapy. Regarding the patients' response to antiviral therapy, the percentage of non-responders for APC, O6MGMT, RASSF1A, SFRP1, and p16 methylated genes were significantly higher versus responders (P<0.05). Of the 159 included patients, the most frequent methylated genes were SFRP1 (102/159), followed by p16 (100/159), RASSF1A (98/159), then LINE1 (81/159), P73 (81/159), APC (78/159), DAPK (66/159), O6MGMT (66/159), and p14 (54/159). A total of 67/98 (68.4%) cases of RASSF1A methylated gene (P=0.0.024), and 62/100 (62%) cases of P16 methylated gene (P=0.03) were associated with mild-degree fibrosis. To recapitulate, the PM of SFRP1, APC, RASSF1A, O6MGMT, and p16 genes increases in chronic hepatitis C patients, and can affect patients' response to antiviral therapy. The RASSF1A and P16 genes might have a role in the distinction between mild and marked fibrosis.
