This paper explores the possibility of constructing two-terminal mechanical devices (one-ports) which are lossless and adjustable. To be lossless, the device must be passive (i.e., not requiring a power supply) and nondissipative. To be adjustable, a parameter of the device should be freely variable in real time as a control input. For the simplest lossless one-ports, the spring and inerter, the question is whether the stiffness and inertance may be varied freely in a lossless manner. We will show that the typical laws which have been proposed for adjustable springs and inerters are necessarily active, and that it is not straightforward to modify them to achieve losslessness, or indeed, passivity. By means of a physical construction using a lever with moveable fulcrum, we will derive device laws for adjustable springs and inerters which satisfy a formal definition of losslessness. We further provide a construction method which does not require a power supply for physically realizable translational and rotary springs and inerters. The analogous questions for lossless adjustable electrical devices are examined.

Distributed power and energy resources are now being used to meet the combined electric power, heating, and cooling demands of many buildings. The addition of on-site renewables and their accompanying intermittency and non-coincidence requires even greater dynamic performance from the distributed power and energy system. Load following generators, energy storage devices, and predictive energy management are increasingly important to achieve the simultaneous goals of increased efficiency, reduced emissions, and sustainable economics. This paper presents two optimization strategies for the dispatch of a multi-chiller cooling plant with cold-water thermal storage. The optimizations aim to reduce both costs and emissions while considering real operational constraints of a plant. The UC Irvine campus micro-grid operation between January 2009 and December 2013 serves as a case study for how improved utilization of energy storage can buffer demand transients, reduce costs and improve plant efficiency. A predictive control strategy which forecasts campus demands from weather predictions, optimizes the plant dispatch, and applies feedback control to modify the plant dispatch in real-time is compared to best-practices manual operation. The dispatch optimization and predictive control algorithms are shown to reduce annual utility bill costs by 12.0%, net energy costs by 3.61%, and improve energy efficiency by 1.56%.

We study a counter-flow solid oxide fuel cell system and consider the challenges faced in minimizing thermal variations from the nominal operating conditions for a reasonable range of power tracking. Blower dynamics, reformer transport delays, spatial distribution of the heat generated and the resulting thermal response are among the issues considered. A novel approach, relying on partial internal reformation of the feedstock is proposed as a remedy to maintain a strong level of power tracking with minimal thermal stress to the fuel cell.

A 100 MW-class planar solid oxide fuel cell synchronous gas turbine hybrid system has been designed, modeled, and controlled. The system is built of 70 functional fuel cell modules, each containing 10 fuel cell stacks, a blower to recirculate depleted cathode air, a depleted fuel oxidizer, and a cathode inlet air recuperator with bypass. The recuperator bypass serves to control the cathode inlet air temperature, while the variable speed cathode blower recirculates air to control the cathode air inlet temperature. This allows for excellent fuel cell thermal management without independent control of the gas turbine, which at this scale will most likely be a synchronous generator. In concept the demonstrated modular design makes it possible to vary the number of cells controlled by each fuel valve, power electronics module, and recirculation blower, so that actuators can adjust to variations in the hundreds of thousands of fuel cells contained within the 100 MW hybrid system for improved control and reliability. In addition, the modular design makes it possible to take individual fuel cell modules offline for maintenance while the overall system continues to operate. Parametric steady-state design analyses conducted on the system reveal that the overall fuel-to-electricity conversion efficiency of the current system increases with increased cathode exhaust recirculation. To evaluate and demonstrate the conceptualized design, the fully integrated system was modeled dynamically in MATLAB-SIMULINK. Simple proportional feedback with steady-state feed-forward controls for power tracking, thermal management, and stable gas turbine operation were developed for the system. Simulations of the fully controlled system indicate that the system has a high efficiency over a large range of operating conditions, decent transient load following capability, fuel and ambient temperature disturbance rejection, and the capability to operate with a varying number of fuel cell modules. The efforts here build on prior work and combine the efforts of system design, system operation, component performance characterization, and control to demonstrate hybrid transient capability in large-scale coal synthesis gas-based applications through simulation. Spatial temperature feedback control has been developed for a simulated integrated non-pressurized simple cycle solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) system. The fuel cell spatial temperature feedback controller is based on (1) feed-forward set-points that minimize temperature variation in the fuel cell electrode-electrolyte solid temperature profile for the system operating power range, and (2) decentralized proportional-integral based feedback to maintain the fuel cell spatial temperature profile during transients and disturbances. Simulation results indicate the fuel cell spatial temperature variation can be maintained within 15 degrees of nominal to significant load perturbations. Temperature gradients through the fuel cell are needed to remove the heat generated within the cell and cannot be avoided. The goal of the developed spatial temperature control is to minimize temperature variations from a nominal temperature profile in time. Minimal temperature variations in the SOFC electrode-electrolyte solid assembly will result in decreased thermal stresses and thereby decreased degradation and probability-of-failure. Simulation results demonstrating the ability to maintain the SOFC spatial temperature during large load perturbations indicates SOFC could be designed and controlled for rapid load following capability. Such performance can greatly improve SOFC system operating flexibility and thereby open new markets for SOFC systems including load following or spinning reserve services for the utility grid. © 2010 by ASME.

The control system for fuel cell gas turbine hybrid power plants plays an important role in achieving synergistic operation of subsystems, improving reliability of operation, and reducing frequency of maintenance and downtime. In this paper, we discuss development of advanced control algorithms for a system composed of an internally reforming solid oxide fuel cell coupled with an indirectly heated Brayton cycle gas turbine. In high temperature fuel cells it is critical to closely maintain fuel cell temperatures and to provide sufficient electrochemical reacting species to ensure system durability. The control objective explored here is focused on maintaining the system power output, temperature constraints, and target fuel utilization, in the presence of ambient temperature and fuel composition perturbations. The present work details the development of a centralized linear quadratic regulator (LQR) including state estimation via Kalman filtering. The controller is augmented by local turbine speed control and integral system power control. Relative gain array analysis has indicated that independent control loops of the hybrid system are coupled at time scales greater than 1 s. The objective of the paper is to quantify the performance of a centralized LQR in rejecting fuel and ambient temperature disturbances compared with a previously developed decentralized controller. Results indicate that both the LQR and decentralized controller can well maintain the system power to the disturbances. However, the LQR ensures better maintenance of the fuel cell stack voltage and temperature that can improve high temperature fuel cell system durability. © 2009 by ASME.

The intrinsic transient performance capability and limitation of integrated solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) systems is evaluated based on the system balance-of-plant response and fuel cell operating requirements (i.e., allowable deviation from nominal operation). Specifically, non-dimensional relations are derived from conservation principles that quantify the maximum instantaneous current increase that a solid oxide fuel cell system can safely manage based on (1) the desired fuel cell operating point, (2) the maximum allowable fuel utilization, (3) the maximum average fuel cell temperature deviation, (4) the response delay and (5) the operating requirements of the system balance-of-plant components. New non-dimensional numbers representing the ratio of species or thermal convection to volumetric capacitance in the fuel cell during balance-of-plant delay have been developed. The analyses indicate: (1) SOFC intrinsic transient performance is largely limited by fuel processor flow delays that can cause fuel depletion in the anode compartment and (2) that with proper system actuators and control design transient operation of SOFC systems should be possible while maintaining SOFC average temperature within a degree. The SOFC system fuel processor lag appears to be the cause of SOFC load following limitation, while lag in air handling appears to be manageable. To demonstrate methods to avoid fuel depletion limitation a fuel flow lead compensator is developed. Several methods to prevent fuel starvation in solid oxide fuel cells are developed and investigated. Fuel starvation can occur during transients, if fuel is consumed in the fuel cell faster than it can be supplied by the fuel processing and delivery system. It is demonstrated through simulation that fuel depletion can occur in the fuel cell if no corrective action is employed. Fuel starvation can be prevented by the use of rate limiters, reference governors, and modifications to the fuel-flow controller. The various methods to prevent fuel depletion within the fuel cell are developed and compared. Analysis indicates that reference governors can avoid hydrogen depletion with much less of an impact on transient load following capability than rate limiters. Hence, various reference governors ranging in level of fidelity were developed and compared for performance. It was further demonstrated that with knowledge of the fuel preprocessor response, it is possible to manipulate the fuel flow to minimize reformer flow dynamics, minimizing the need to govern the fuel cell transient capability. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. A theoretical solid oxide fuel cell-gas turbine hybrid system has been designed using a Capstone 60 kW micro-gas turbine. Through simulation it is demonstrated that the hybrid system can be controlled to achieve transient capability greater than the Capstone 60 kW recuperated gas turbine alone. The Capstone 60 kW gas turbine transient capability is limited because in order to maintain combustor, turbine and heat exchangers temperatures within operating requirements, the Capstone combustor fuel-to-air ratio must be maintained. Potentially fast fuel flow rate changes, must be limited to the slower, inertia limited, turbo machinery air response. This limits a 60 kW recuperated gas turbine to transient response rates of approximately 1 kW s-1. However, in the SOFC/GT hybrid system, the combustor temperature can be controlled, by manipulating the fuel cell current, to regulate the amount of fuel sent to the combustor. By using such control pairing, the fuel flow rate does not have to be constrained by the air flow in SOFC/GT hybrid systems. This makes it possible to use the rotational inertia of the gas turbine, to buffer the fuel cell power response, during fuel cell fuel flow transients that otherwise limit fuel cell system transient capability. Such synergistic integration improves the transient response capability of the integrated SOFC gas turbine hybrid system. A novel SOFC system control strategy has been developed for rapid load following. The strategy was motivated from the performance of a baseline control strategy developed from control concepts in the literature. The basis for the fuel cell system control concepts are explained by a simplified order of magnitude time scale analysis. The control concepts are then investigated in a detailed quasi-two-dimensional integrated dynamic system model that resolves the physics of heat transfer, chemical kinetics, mass convection and electrochemistry within the system. The baseline control strategy is based on the standard operating method of constant utilization with no control of the combustor temperature. Simulation indicates that with this control strategy large combustor transients can take place during load transients because the fuel flow to the combustor increases faster than the air flow. To alleviate this problem, a novel control structure that maintains the combustor temperature within acceptable ranges without any supplementary hardware was introduced. The combustor temperature is controlled by manipulating the current to change the combustor inlet stoichiometry. The load following capability of SOFC systems is inherently limited by anode compartment fuel depletion during the time of fuel delivery delay. A bottoming 275 kilowatt planar solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) gas turbine (GT) hybrid system control approach has been conceptualized and designed. Based on previously published modeling techniques, a dynamic model is developed that captures the physics sufficient for dynamic simulation of all processes that affect the system with time scales greater than ten milliseconds. The dynamic model was used to make system design improvements to enable the system to operate dynamically over a wide range of power output (15 to 100% power). The wide range of operation was possible by burning supplementary fuel in the combustor and operating the turbine at variable speed for improved thermal management. The dynamic model was employed to design a control strategy for the system. Analyses of the relative gain array (RGA) of the system at several operating points gave insight into input/output (I/O) pairing for decentralized control. Particularly, the analyses indicate that for SOFC/GT hybrid plants that use voltage as a controlled variable it is beneficial to control system power by manipulating fuel cell current and to control fuel cell voltage by manipulating the anode fuel flowrate. To control the stack temperature during transient load changes, a cascade control structure is employed in which a fast inner loop that maintains the GT shaft speed receives its setpoint from a slower outer loop that maintains the stack temperature. Fuel can be added to the combustor to maintain the turbine inlet temperature for the lower operating power conditions. To maintain fuel utilization and to prevent fuel starvation in the fuel cell, fuel is supplied to the fuel cell proportionally to the stack current. In addition, voltage is used as an indicator of varying fuel concentrations allowing the fuel flow to be adjusted accordingly. Using voltage as a sensor is shown to be a potential solution to making SOFC systems robust to varying fuel compositions. The simulation tool proved effective for fuel cell/GT hybrid system control system development. The resulting SOFC/GT system control approach is shown to have transient load-following capability over a wide range of power, ambient temperature, and fuel concentration variations. This study is focused on a hybrid fuel cell/gas turbine (FC/GT) system with an atmospheric pressure solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). The impact of the gas turbine rotational speed on dynamic performance and controllability of a hybrid system is investigated. The transient response of the FC/GT system to perturbations in the power demand has been investigated. Two operational strategies of gas turbines are compared: (1) fixed speed operation, and (2) variable speed operation. For both operation strategies, a wide range of power production is numerically simulated. The results show that variable speed operation is superior for the FC/GT hybrid configuration studied. Variable speed operation allows a 50% turn down in power with no additional balance of plant equipment required. The system efficiency is maintained above 66% for variable speed operation compared to 53% for fixed speed operation with auxiliary combustion. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A detailed dynamic model incorporating geometric resolution of a molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) with dynamic simulation of physical and electrochemical processes in the stream-wise direction is presented. The model was developed using mass and momentum conservation, electrochemical and chemical reaction mechanisms, and heat-transfer. Results from the model are compared with data from an experimental MCFC unit. Furthermore, the model was applied to predict dynamic variations of voltage, current and temperature in an MCFC as it responds to varying load demands. The voltage was evaluated using two different approaches: one applying a model developed by Yuh and Selman [C.Y. Yuh, J.R. Selman, The polarization of molten carbonate fuel cell electrodes: I. Analysis of steady-state polarization data, J. Electrochem. Soc. 138 (1991) 3642-3648; C.Y. Yuh, J.R. Selman, The polarization of molten carbonate fuel cell electrodes: II. Characterization by AC impedance and response to current interruption, J. Electrochem. Soc. 138 (1991) 3649-3655] and another applying simplified equations using average local temperatures and pressures. The results show that both models can be used to predict voltage and dynamic response characteristics of an MCFC and the model that uses the more detailed Yuh and Selman approach can predict those accurately and consistently for a variety of operating conditions. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. Current high temperature fuel cell (HTFC) systems used for stationary power applications (in the 200-300 kW size range) have very limited dynamic load following capability or are simply base load devices. Considering the economics of existing electric utility rate structures, there is little incentive to increase HTFC ramping capability beyond 1 kWs-1 (0.4% s-1). However, in order to ease concerns about grid instabilities from utility companies and increase market adoption, HTFC systems will have to increase their ramping abilities, and will likely have to incorporate electrical energy storage (EES). Because batteries have low power densities and limited lifetimes in highly cyclic applications, ultra capacitors may be the EES medium of choice. The current analyses show that, because ultra capacitors have a very low energy storage density, their integration with HTFC systems may not be feasible unless the fuel cell has a ramp rate approaching 10 kWs-1 (4% s-1) when using a worst-case design analysis. This requirement for fast dynamic load response characteristics can be reduced to 1 kWs-1 by utilizing high resolution demand data to properly size ultra capacitor systems and through demand management techniques that reduce load volatility. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. A two-dimensional dynamic model was created for a Siemens Westinghouse type tubular solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). This SOFC model was integrated with simulation modules for other system components (e.g., reformer, combustion chamber, and dissipater) to comprise a system model that can simulate an integrated 25 kw SOFC system located at the University of California, Irvine. A comparison of steady-state model results to data suggests that the integrated model can well predict actual system power performance to within 3%, and temperature to within 5%. In addition, the model predictions well characterize observed voltage and temperature transients that are representative of tubular SOFC system performance. The characteristic voltage transient due to changes in SOFC hydrogen concentration has a time scale that is shown to be on the order of seconds while the characteristic temperature transient is on the order of hours. Voltage transients due to hydrogen concentration change are investigated in detail. Particularly, the results reinforce the importance of maintaining fuel utilization during transient operation. The model is shown to be a useful tool for investigating the impacts of component response characteristics on overall system dynamic performance. Current-based flow control (CBFC), a control strategy of changing the fuel flow rate in proportion to the fuel cell current is tested and shown to be highly effective. The results further demonstrate the impact of fuel flow delay that may result from slow dynamic responses of control valves, and that such flow delays impose major limitations on the system transient response capability. The feasibility of incorporating semi‐active resettable springs (SRSs) to mitigate torsional response of structures is investigated. The effectiveness and robustness of the SRSs in reducing seismic demand was demonstrated on a spectrum of building properties idealized with one‐story asymmetric structures. The effects of the SRSs on the edge displacements were analyzed and several system parameters were identified that significantly effect the edge displacements. Two approaches based on geometric constraints and modal analysis are proposed to determine the proper distribution of the SRSs to minimize edge displacements. The transportation sector produces a large portion of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States. Meeting ambitious reductions in greenhouse gasses requires large-scale adoption of battery electric vehicles and has led to several policies and laws aimed at incentivizing their sales. While electric vehicles comprise a small percentage of the overall fleets of vehicles, the expected production of electric vehicles is soon expected to be in the millions. This will create challenges in providing an adequate charging infrastructure, as well as the ensuing management of the overall electricity demand at the grid level. In this work, a novel smart-charging protocol for battery electric vehicle charging at workplace parking structures is proposed. The Octopus Charger-based Mixed Integer Linear Programming protocol allows octopus chargers (i.e., charging stations with multiple cables) to independently schedule charging periods for their assigned vehicles. The proposed protocols can manage a parking structure demand load while reducing the number of installed charging stations. Driving patterns from the National Household Travel Survey were used to perform simulations, to verify and quantify the effectiveness of the proposed protocol. The proposed protocol resulted in improved peak load reductions for all simulated smart-charging scenarios when compared with uncontrolled charging. This paper addresses control of structural vibrations using semi-active actuators that are capable of manipulating stiffness and/or producing variable stiffness. Usually vibration suppression is achieved using damping devices rather than stiffness ones. However, stiffness devices can produce large forces and have significant advantages for shock isolation purposes. In this work we use a passivity approach to establish the requirements for the control law for a structure equipped with semi-active stiffness devices. We also solve an optimal control problem that demonstrates that our passive, resetting feedback control law approximates the optimal control. Two multiobjective control strategies are presented and applied to the wind-excited benchmark problem. The first strategy, referred to as the energy-to-peak based controller, deals with a class of 'energy-bounded' excitations, whereas the second strategy, referred to as the peak-to-peak based controller, addresses a class of peak-bounded excitations. Both control strategies are derived by minimizing the sum of weighted peak response quantities with the constraints (or penalties) on the peak values of another set of quantities such as the control resources. Both the state feedback and dynamic output feedback controllers are derived and presented. The design syntheses of these two control strategies are developed and formulated within the framework of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs), so that the LMI toolbox in MATLAB can be used effectively and conveniently. These two control strategies are applied to the wind-excited 76-story benchmark building to demonstrate their applicability and control performances. Simulation results illustrate that the proposed control strategies are viable for civil engineering structures, and their performances are excellent in comparison with that of the linear quadratic Gaussian sample controller. In this paper, the control of linear parameter-varying (LPV) systems with time-varying real uncertain parameters, where only some of the parameters are measured and available for feedback, is considered. The control objectives are internal stability and disturbance attenuation in the sense of a bounded induced [L.sub.2]-norm from the disturbance to the controlled output. Using parametric Lyapunov functions, the solvability conditions for dynamic output feedback controllers that depend on the measured parameters are expressed in terms of a set of linear matrix inequalities (LMI's) and an additional coupling constraint which destroys the convexity of the overall problem. By transforming the coupling constraint into a rank condition, the problem is recast into a rank-minimization problem with LMI constraints. In this paper, we discuss the design of controllers that provide quadratic stability and a desirable disturbance attenuation level (through an appropriately small [L.sub.2] gain) for systems with time varying, real and structured uncertainty. It is shown that for a class of systems, the problem of designing dynamic output feedback can be separated into two stages, each an easily solvable convex problem. This information could be used in system design and configuration. Two examples are presented to illustrate the proposed approach.

This paper deals with the design of compensators that provide a guaranteed level of performance, in the sense of [L.sub.2] gain, for systems with time-varying structured uncertainty. For stability, the notion of quadratic stability, using a single Lyapunov function, is used. The uncertainty is assumed to be polytopic (e.g., the uncertainty vector enters the state-space representation of the systems affinely). Recent results in the characterization of [H.sub.infinity] controllers are used to show that quadratic stability with performance is equivalent to a bi-affine problem. A set of conditions, under which the problem becomes convex, is discussed. Index Terms - Output feedback, robust control, structured uncertainty.

Recently developed [H.sub.[infinity]] control techniques are used to design controllers to suppress the effects of earthquake ground motion on the response of building structures. In particular, controllers are designed to reduce both the interstory drift and the absolute acceleration of selected floors on which sensitive equipment may be installed. Further, the [H.sub.[infinity]] control techniques are extended to include the capability of using acceleration sensors, since direct measurement of floor accelerations is the most reliable and least expensive measurement to make in earthquake engineering applications. Simulation results for a six-story building are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the control method presented.

This note concerns the effects of observers on robust linear feedback controllers. Sufficient conditions are obtained that guarantee full recovery of the allowable uncertainty bounds attainable by full state feedback. We also study the effects of the resulting high gain observers on the disturbance rejection bounds. We show that full recovery of the uncertainty bound leads to possible large degradation in disturbance rejection. However, if there is only an additive plant disturbance and no measurement disturbance, this degradation can be prevented.

This work studies connectivity maintenance of mobile networks. A mobile network of interest consists of two types of nodes, pre-deployed (client) and intermediate nodes. Upon initial deployment of client nodes in a field, multiple stationary intermediate nodes are placed strategically to establish robust network connectivity. We study scenarios in which an initially connected network consisting of pre-deployed and intermediate nodes is exposed to mobility of the former. Two types of node mobility scenarios are investigated. The first scenario analyzes the bounds of mobility when pre-deployed nodes move at small scales. The bounds of node mobility preserving connectivity are derived through analysis and verified by simulations. The second scenario considers the movement of pre-deployed nodes beyond the bounds of the first scenario thereby breaking connected links and partitioning the connected network. This scenario then considers relocating the existing intermediate nodes in order to reestablish connectivity. A general formulation is proposed in the form of an optimization problem. We prove that the general formulation of the problem is NP-hard. Next, we turn our attention to a practical scenario in which the location of nodes is made available using GPS signals. We solve the problem of practical scenario in polynomial time and analyze the complexity of our solution. We also present comprehensive performance evaluation results of our proposed algorithm. This work investigates the active defense problem wherein a target aircraft launches a defending missile (i.e. a defender) to intercept an attacking missile in three-dimensional (3D) space. The novelty of this work includes: adding a safe distance for the target, which protects the target from being influenced by defensive interception, and designing a new 3D defensive guidance strategy without linearization to meet different guidance requirements. The defensive guidance strategy combines the approach of analyzing 3D pursuit-evasion engagement and the optimal control to obtain the guidance law. The approach derives the analytical solutions of 3D pursuit-evasion engagement, and a fast algorithm to predict the trajectory of attacking missile is proposed based on these analytical solutions. The advantages of this guidance strategy include incorporation of the added safe distance requirement directly without hindering the ability of the optimal guidance law to meet other requirements, and straight-forward extension for advanced scenarios where multi-defenders intercept the attacking missile simultaneously from different directions. This paper investigates gain-scheduled control design for linear systems with time-varying state delays subject to actuator saturation and external disturbance. Assuming the disturbance is peak bounded, a sufficient delay-dependent condition is established to guarantee that a family of level sets, corresponding to a novel parameter-dependent Lyapunov–Krasovskii functional, are nested and invariant to the closed-loop system. The invariant sets are then used to obtain nested reachable sets (ellipsoids) to bound the closed-loop states. A family of continuous controllers are designed based on these nested ellipsoids. The controller with the best performance is selected, each time, based on the closed-loop state vector, while complying with the saturation bound, and the resulting closed-loop system is locally input-to-state stable. All conditions are represented in the form of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) by the linear spline method. Finally, the benefit of the control method is illustrated by two examples. Circular implementation of vector-channel least-squares lattice filters yields an algorithm that removes matrix inversions and reduces matrix multiplications. The algorithm comprises separate single channel algorithms that need variables of previous time or samples, thus making the periodic form suitable for multiprocessor implementation. Complete residual and AR coefficient algorithms are given and initialization issues are discussed. The prediction error form of the lattices and its relationship with the residual form are studied.

A novel low power control technique along with a new class of actuators is developed for shock isolation and control of structural vibrations. In contrast to other techniques, including conventional viscous or rate damping, the force produced by the actuator has no velocity dependence. Several experimental, analytical, and simulation results are presented in support of this new, semi-active technique for structural control. The basic approach is to manipulate the system stiffness through the use of resetable actuators. With the proposed control approach, the actuator behaves like a linear spring. However, at appropriate times, the effective unstretched length of the actuator is changed--or reset--to extract energy from the vibrating structure. Experimental validation of the actuator model, analytical results on stability and actuator-placement, and simulation results for earthquake applications are presented. [S0022-0434(00)01603-8]
