Abstract Background Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is diagnosed relatively late and has a poor prognosis, requiring early detection to reduce the disease burden. This diagnostic test accuracy meta-analysis evaluated the serological diagnostic value of nine EBV-related IgA antibody panels (EBNA1-IgA, VCA-IgA, EA-IgA, Zta-IgA, EBNA1-IgA + VCA-IgA, VCA-IgA + EA-IgA, VCA-IgA + Rta-IgG, EBNA1-IgA + VCA-IgA + Zta-IgA and VCA-IgA + EA-IgA + Rta-IgG), aiming to identify suitable serological detection biomarkers for NPC screening. Methods PubMed, Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure and Chinese BioMedical Literature Database were searched from January 1st, 2000 to September 30th, 2023, with keywords nasopharyngeal carcinoma, IgA, screening, early detection, early diagnosis, sensitivity and specificity. Articles on the diagnostic value of serum EBV-related IgA antibody panels for NPC were included. Study selection, data extraction, and quality assessment were performed independently by two researchers, and a third researcher was consulted in the case of disagreement. Bivariate models were used for statistical analysis. The quality of included studies was evaluated through Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies tool (QUADAS-2). Results A total of 70 articles were included, involving 11 863 NPC cases and 34 995 controls. Among the nine EBV-related IgA antibody panels, EBNA1-IgA + VCA-IgA [0.928 (0.898, 0.950)], VCA-IgA + Rta-IgG [0.925 (0.890, 0.949)], EBNA1-IgA + VCA-IgA + Zta-IgA [0.962 (0.909, 0.985)] and VCA-IgA + EA-IgA + Rta-IgG [0.945 (0.918, 0.964)] demonstrated higher pooled sensitivity (95%CI). In terms of diagnostic odds ratio (DOR) (95%CI), EBNA1-IgA + VCA-IgA [107.647 (61.173, 189.430)], VCA-IgA + Rta-IgG [105.988 (60.118, 186.857)] and EBNA1-IgA + VCA-IgA + Zta-IgA [344.450 (136.351, 870.153)] showed superior performance. Additionally, the SROC curves for EBNA1-IgA + VCA-IgA and VCA-IgA + Rta-IgG were more favorable. However, publication bias was detected for VCA-IgA (P = 0.005) and EBNA1-IgA + VCA-IgA (P = 0.042). Conclusions In general, parallel detection of serum EBNA1-IgA, VCA-IgA and Zta-IgA antibodies using ELISA demonstrates better pooled sensitivity and DOR among the studied panels. In the cases where fewer indicators are used, serum VCA-IgA and EBNA1-IgA/Rta-IgG antibody panel exhibits a comparable performance. The boundary conditions in thermal simulation of the spindle system are very complicated and the empirically calculated ones will usually result in a significant discrepancy between experiment and simulation. Thus, the optimal boundary conditions were identified by treating it as an inverse optimization problem in this paper. Moreover, to advance the optimization efficiency, a reduced order model is established to replace the time-consuming thermal simulation of the spindle system. By superposition of truncated eigenmodes and accurately predicted modal coefficients, the reduced order model can reconstruct the field very similar to thermal simulation. Experimental reconstruction of both the temperature field and thermal deformation field by the reduced order model demonstrated its at least 360 times speedup with 99.8 % accuracy compared to the actual thermal simulation. With the accurate reduced order model as a lightweight digital twin and using the differential evolution algorithm, three types of boundary conditions, i.e., the heat generation rates, the convective heat transfer coefficients and the thermal contact resistances, under the shaft rotation speed of 4,000r/min were identified within 11s. The maximum temperature simulation error was reduced from 85.6 % to 6.6 % and the thermal deformation simulation error was reduced from 60.9 % to 10.8 %.

Abstract Background Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a global health issue with noticeably high incidence and mortality. Microsimulation models offer a time-efficient method to dynamically analyze multiple screening strategies. The study aimed to identify the efficient organized CRC screening strategies for Shenzhen City. Methods A microsimulation model named CMOST was employed to simulate CRC screening among 1 million people without migration in Shenzhen, with two CRC developing pathways and real-world participation rates. Initial screening included the National Colorectal Polyp Care score (NCPCS), fecal immunochemical test (FIT), and risk-stratification model (RS model), followed by diagnostic colonoscopy for positive results. Several start-ages (40, 45, 50 years), stop-ages (70, 75, 80 years), and screening intervals (annual, biennial, triennial) were assessed for each strategy. The efficiency of CRC screening was assessed by number of colonoscopies versus life-years gained (LYG). Results The screening strategies reduced CRC lifetime incidence by 14–27 cases (30.9–59.0%) and mortality by 7–12 deaths (41.5–71.3%), yielded 83–155 LYG, while requiring 920 to 5901 colonoscopies per 1000 individuals. Out of 81 screening, 23 strategies were estimated efficient. Most of the efficient screening strategies started at age 40 (17 out of 23 strategies) and stopped at age 70 (13 out of 23 strategies). Predominant screening intervals identified were annual for NCPCS, biennial for FIT, and triennial for RS models. The incremental colonoscopies to LYG ratios of efficient screening increased with shorter intervals within the same test category. Compared with no screening, when screening at the same start-to-stop age and interval, the additional colonoscopies per LYG increased progressively for FIT, NCPCS and RS model. Conclusion This study identifies efficient CRC screening strategies for the average-risk population in Shenzhen. Most efficient screening strategies indeed start at age 40, but the optimal starting age depends on the chosen willingness-to-pay threshold. Within insufficient colonoscopy resources, efficient FIT and NCPCS screening strategies might be CRC initial screening strategies. We acknowledged the age-dependency bias of the results with NCPCS and RS.

ObjectiveTo explore the association between air pollutants and hospital outpatient visits in a district of Shanghai.MethodsDaily meteorological data， environmental data， data of outpatient visits to two secondary hospitals and two tertiary hospitals in this district from January 1， 2015 to December 31， 2019 were collected. A Poisson regression generalized linear model was used to analyze the exposure-response relationship between the air pollutants and hospital outpatient visits in this area.ResultsDuring the study period， the total number of outpatient visits in the included hospitals was 17 802 634， with an average daily total of （9 750±4 191） outpatient visits，and an average daily of （761±341） respiratory outpatient visits. In the lag effect of single pollutant model， when the concentration of air pollutant increased by 10 μg·m-3， PM2.5， SO2， NO2 had the maximum lag effect on the number of outpatient visits in the department of internal medicine for respiratory diseases on lag day 4， day 5 and day 7， respectively. And the RR values and 95%CI were 1.002 0（1.001 3‒1.002 6）， 1.0154（1.012 3‒1.018 5）， and 1.006 1（1.005 3‒1.006 9）， respectively.ConclusionThere is a exposure-response relationship between air pollutants and the number of outpatient visits in each department of the hospitals， and different pollutants have different degrees of lag effects.

Abstract Aim This study aimed to explore the relationship between nurses' occupational exposure to antineoplastic agents and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Design Meta‐analysis. Methods Data were retrieved from studies published before April 2022 in PubMed, the Cochrane Library, the Web of Science, Embase databases, the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), China Biology Medicine disc (CBM), China Science and Technology Journal databases (VIP) and Wan Fang databases (WF). Stata MP (Version 17.0) was used to conduct this meta‐analysis. Results The current evidence shows that occupational exposure to antineoplastic agents increases nurses' risk of spontaneous abortions, stillbirths, and congenital abnormalities. It is necessary to pay attention to occupational exposures caused by antineoplastic agents, especially for female nurses of reproductive age. Managers should take timely and effective countermeasures to ensure their occupational safety and reduce the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Introduction The Shenzhen government is widely considered to be most efficiently implementing smoke-free legislation in China. We evaluated and compared the impact of Shenzhen’s two-phase smoke-free regulation on the incidence rates for ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. Methods An interrupted time series design was used to capture immediate and annual incidence changes from 2007 to 2016 for both ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke due to two-phase smoke-free regulation in Shenzhen, China, by using a generalized additive model. The first phase, implemented on 9 March 2010, required five main public places to be smoke-free. In the second phase, the comprehensive law was expanded to the whole city on 1 March 2014. Results The regulation implementation during phase I was associated with a strong immediate decline in the incidence rate of ischemic stroke (-14.2%, 95% CI: -19.6 – -8.4) and hemorrhagic stroke (-10.1%, 95% CI: -18.2 – -1.2), but without showing the annual changes (p>0.05). Following the implementation of the comprehensive law, the gradual annual effect showed a significant change in ischemic stroke, with a 6.3% (95% CI: 8.9 – -3.6) reduction. Neither the immediate nor gradual decreases in hemorrhagic stroke incidences associated with the comprehensive regulation were statistically significant during phase II (p>0.05). Subgroup analyses indicate that a much larger health effect of the regulation during phase I was greater among those aged ≥65 years than among those aged 35–64 years. Conclusions Shenzhen’s two-phase smoke-free regulation was well implemented. Even though the regulation did not extend to the whole city, the immediate health benefits on the incidence rates of ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke could be seen. However, the health benefits brought by the implementation of comprehensive smoke-free legislation were attenuated by previous smoke-free regulations in five main public places, which were more evident in hemorrhagic stroke.

Summary: Background: Smoking, alcohol consumption and overweight/obesity are key cancer risk factors contributing to the cancer burden in China. We aimed to quantify the cancer burden in China associated with smoking, alcohol consumption and overweight/obesity, and estimate the potential effect for cancer prevention interventions under different scenarios. Methods: We used a macro-simulation approach called Prevent Model to estimate for a 30-year study period (2021–2050) numbers and proportions of future avoidable cancer cases under different scenarios of reducing the prevalence of smoking, alcohol consumption and overweight/obesity in Chinese adults. Cancer incidence was predicted under three scenarios: elimination, ambitious target (between elimination and manageable target) and manageable target (from national policy or global action plan). Risk factor prevalence was obtained from China Chronic Disease and Risk Factor Surveillance, and cancer incidence data were derived from the China Cancer Registry Annual Report. Relative risks were obtained from several recent large-scale studies or high-quality meta-analysis. Population data were extracted from the China Population & Employment Statistical Yearbook, China Health Statistical Yearbook and World Population Prospects. Findings: Estimates of the avoidable cancer burden varied with different scenarios. In the theoretical maximum intervention scenario, where the prevalence of smoking, alcohol consumption and overweight/obesity would be eliminated, 9.17% (males: 13.50%; females: 1.47%) of smoking-related cancer cases, 7.06% (males: 11.49%; females: 1.00%) of cancer cases related to alcohol consumption and 8.22% (males: 7.91%; females: 8.52%) of overweight/obesity-related cancer cases were estimated to be avoidable during 2021–2050. Other scenarios, with more moderate goals in the exposure prevalence of smoking, alcohol use and overweight/obesity were also found to be associated with substantial reductions in the future cancer burden. Interpretation: Our results suggested that a substantial number of future cancer cases could be avoided in Chinese adults by reducing the prevalence of smoking, alcohol consumption and overweight/obesity. Based on the three-dimensional field of molten pool and twin-roll strip casting experiments, this work verified the cracking mechanism of the strip by establishing mathematical model and rolling experiments. The results showed that due to the instability of the thermophysical field of the molten pool and the inconsistency of kiss curve height, the newly solidified strip will undergo incompatible deformation through the rolling. The stress concentration will appear around the large reduction area and then form slip bands. When plastic strain exceeds the limit of the metal, the oblique cracks will appear in the slip bands periodically or completely penetrate the strip. In addition, tensile cracks could also be produced by incompatible deformation. Therefore, keeping the uniformity and stability of the thermal physical field in molten pool is the key factor to restrain cracks.

Cancer has become the most common cause of death in China. Owing to rapid economic development, improved livelihood, and shifts in risk factors, cancer epidemiology has experienced substantial changes during the past several decades. In this review, we aim to describe the current cancer epidemiology of the main types of cancer in China, report major risk factors associated with cancer development, and summarize the contributions of the Chinese government to controlling the cancer burden. A total of 4,064,000 new cases were diagnosed in China in 2016. The most frequent types are lung cancer (828,100; 20.4%), colorectal cancer (408,000; 10.0%), and gastric cancer (396,500; 9.8%). Lung (657,000; 27.2%), liver (336,400, 13.9%), and stomach (288,500; 12.0%) cancers are the 3 most deadly cancers in the general population. The 5-year survival rate for cancer has dramatically increased in recent decades. However, liver and particularly pancreatic cancers still have the poorest prognosis. The main modifiable risk factors associated with cancer development include infectious agents, smoking, alcohol consumption, obesity, unhealthful dietary habits, and inadequate physical activity. The Chinese government has made unremitting efforts to decrease the cancer burden, including cancer education and investment in cancer screening programs.

Abstract Background Benchmark data on the population-level economic burden are critical to inform policymakers about liver cancer control. However, comprehensive data in China are currently limited. Methods A prevalence-based approach from a societal perspective was used to quantify the annual economic burden of liver cancer in China from 2019 to 2030. Detailed per-case data on medical/non-medical expenditure and work-loss days were extracted from a multicenter survey. The numbers/rates of new/prevalent cases and deaths, survival, and population-related parameters were extracted from the Global Burden of Disease 2019 and the literature. All expenditure data were reported in both 2019 Chinese Yuan (CNY) and United States dollar (US$, for main estimations). Result The overall economic burden of liver cancer was estimated at CNY76.7/US$11.1 billion in China in 2019 (0.047% of the local GDP). The direct expenditure was CNY21.6/US$3.1 billion, including CNY19.7/US$2.9 billion for medical expenditure and CNY1.9/US$0.3 billion for non-medical expenditure. The indirect cost was CNY55.1/US$8.0 billion (71.8% of the overall burden), including CNY3.0/US$0.4 billion due to disability and CNY52.0/US$7.5 billion due to premature death. The total burden would increase to CNY84.2/US$12.2 billion, CNY141.7/US$20.5 billion, and CNY234.3/US$34.0 billion in 2020, 2025, and 2030, accounting for 0.102%, 0.138%, and 0.192% of China's GDP, respectively. When processing the current coal and gas outburst risk index data, it is observed that the data sequence does not have intuitive regularity, and the acquired data signals are generally mixed with different degrees of noise, which hinders data processing and prediction. To reduce the influence of noise signal on prediction, it is proposed to use Translation-invariant Wavelet Threshold Denoising (TIWTD) to process signal data, and the result shows that the noise signal in the original data is significantly reduced. On this basis, a Compact Negative Selection Algorithm (CNSA) is introduced to detect abnormal signals exceeding the critical value in the data and make predictions. After training the model with the gas hazard index feature subset collected during the excavation process of No. 11192 mining face in a coal mine from Guizhou province in China, input the processed indicator data into the model for prediction. The results show that the model can effectively identify the anomalies in the data and accurately predict the risk of coal and gas outburst, the TIWTD-CNSA model can be used to guide engineering practice.

For identifying the relative corrosion resistance among the hot-dip pure Zn sheet, Zn-Fe sheet and Zn-Al-Mg sheet，and providing data support to switch to Zn-Al-Mg steel sheet, scanning electron microscope(SEM)was utilized to observe the section micro morphology and surface microstructure characteristics after phosphating of the three kinds of coatings.Meanwhile, the weight loss and average corrosion rate of different types of coated steel and the same type of coated steel with different coating weights after experiment were compared via neutral salt spray test.Results showed that The corrosion resistance of Zn-Fe alloy plate after phosphating was equivalent to that of pure zinc plate, and Zn-Al-Mg plate had the best corrosion resistance, and the relative corrosion resistance was about 6.5 times that of the pure zinc plate and Zn-Fe alloy plate.Compared with 50 g/m2 pure zinc plate and Zn-Fe alloy plate, the Zn-Al-Mg plate with 35 g/m2 coating weight had higher corrosion resistance.

Abstract Background Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer morbidity and mortality worldwide, however, the individualized treatment is still unsatisfactory. DNA methylation can affect gene regulation and may be one of the most valuable biomarkers in predicting the prognosis of lung adenocarcinoma. This study was aimed to identify methylation CpG sites that may be used to predict lung adenocarcinoma prognosis. Methods The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database was used to detect methylation CpG sites associated with lung adenocarcinoma prognosis and construct a methylation signature model. Then, a Chinese cohort was carried out to estimate the association between methylation and lung adenocarcinoma prognosis. Biological function studies, including demethylation treatment, cell proliferative capacity, and gene expression changes in lung adenocarcinoma cell lines, were further performed. Results In the TCGA set, three methylation CpG sites were selected that were associated with lung adenocarcinoma prognosis (cg14517217, cg15386964, and cg18878992). Highlights Patients with thyroid tumor have higher perchlorate exposure than control. Perchlorate can increase the risk of papillary thyroid carcinoma. Perchlorate can disturb the homeostasis of thyroid function. Perchlorate was positively correlated with thyroglobulin antibody.

Based on different high-entropy alloys (HEAs) systems, the latest research progress in additive manufactured high-entropy alloys was reviewed. The rapid solidification microstructure, segregation and precipitation behaviors of high-entropy alloys fabricated by additive manufacturing with different compositions were described. Especially, the analysis was focused on the mechanical properties, deformation and strengthening mechanisms. It was pointed out that the appropriate additive manufacturing process should be selected for different high-entropy alloy systems, and the influencing factors of forming quality need to be further studied. Finally, it was proposed that high-entropy alloys with both excellent strength and high plasticity can be developed and prepared by additive manufacturing technology.

Abstract Background and aims Esophageal cancer risk prediction models allow for risk‐stratified endoscopic screening. We aimed to assess the quality of these models developed in the general population. Methods A systematic search of the PubMed and Embase databases from January 2000 through May 2021 was performed. Studies that developed or validated a model of esophageal cancer in the general population were included. Screening, data extraction, and risk of bias (ROB) assessment by the Prediction model Risk Of Bias Assessment Tool (PROBAST) were performed independently by two reviewers. Results Of the 13 models included in the qualitative analysis, 8 were developed for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and the other 5 were developed for esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC). Only two models conducted external validation. In the ESCC models, cigarette smoking was included in each model, followed by age, sex, and alcohol consumption. For EAC models, cigarette smoking and body mass index were included in each model, and gastroesophageal reflux disease, uses of acid‐suppressant medicine, and nonsteroidal anti‐inflammatory drug were exclusively included. The discriminative performance was reported in all studies, with C statistics ranging from 0.71 to 0.88, whereas only six models reported calibration. For ROB, all the models had a low risk in participant and outcome, but all models showed high risk in analysis, and 60% of models showed a high risk in predictors, which resulted in all models being classified as having overall high ROB. For model applicability, about 60% of these models had an overall low risk, with 30% of models of high risk and 10% of models of unclear risk, concerning the assessment of participants, predictors, and outcomes. Conclusions Most current risk prediction models of esophageal cancer have a high ROB. Prediction models need further improvement in their quality and applicability to benefit esophageal cancer screening.

Summary: Background: Gastric carcinogenesis is a multistep process initiating with chronic gastritis and progressing through atrophy, intestinal metaplasia, and dysplasia to carcinoma. This study aims to comprehensively investigate sociodemographic disparities in each stage of gastric carcinogenesis and estimate to what extent the inequalities could be ascribed to risk factors of gastric cancer (GC). Methods: We used the baseline data from a community-based study in China's high-risk areas, totalling 27094 participants. Gastric mucosa status was ascertained by endoscopy and biopsies. An overall socioeconomic status (SES) variable was generated by latent class analysis. We calculated relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) using modified Poisson regression to assess associations of sociodemographic factors with each cascade stage. We estimated the percentage of the excess risk for neoplastic lesions among vulnerable populations that can be explained by established risk factors. Results: Age and sex showed associations with all gastric lesions, whose RRs increased with lesion progressing. Compared with individuals without schooling, the RRs of neoplastic lesions for people with primary, secondary, and post-secondary education were 0·86 (95% CI 0·76–0·97), 1·00 (95% CI 0·88–1·13), and 0·70 (95% CI 0·47–1·03), respectively. Participants with medium SES had a lower risk of neoplastic lesions than people in the low SES group (RR 0·83, 95% CI 0·74–0·93). GC risk factors could explain 33·6% of the excess risk of neoplastic lesions among men and a small proportion of the disparities among SES groups. Interpretation: Age and sex were essential sociodemographic factors for GC and precursor diseases. Individuals with low educational levels or SES were more likely to have neoplastic lesions. About one-third of the sex difference and a slight fraction of the socioeconomic inequalities could be attributed to included risk factors. To demonstrate the trends of hypercholesterolemia change in Shenzhen, China from 1997 to 2018. Participants were residents aged 18 to 69 years in Shenzhen, China, and were recruited using multi-stage cluster sampling. All participants were surveyed about their socio-demographics, lifestyle, occupation, mental health, and social support. Physical measurements and blood samples for subsequent measurements were collected according to a standardized protocol. A total of 26,621 individuals participated in the three surveys with 8,266 in 1997, 8,599 in 2009, and 9,756 in 2018. In both women and men, there was a significant downward linear trend in age-adjusted mean high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) from 1997 to 2018 (women: 0.17 ± 0.06, p = 0.008 vs. men: 0.21 ± 0.04, p < 0.001). In contrast, the age-adjusted total triglycerides and total cholesterol in both sexes have demonstrated an increasing trend in the past two decades. However, no significant changes in age-adjusted low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) in both men and women between 2009 and 2018 were found (women: 0.00 ± 0.02, p = 0.85 vs. men 0.02 ± 0.03, p = 0.34). The age-adjusted prevalence of hypercholesterolemia observed a rapid rise from 1997 to 2009 and appeared to be stabilized in 2018, which was similar to the trend of the prevalence of high total triglycerides in women. Studies had suggested an association between circadian disruptors (including night shift work, domestic light exposure at night, sleep duration, and circadian gene polymorphism) and breast cancer, while rare studies had been conducted in the Chinese population. This study was a case-control study conducted to explore the impact of circadian disruptors on the risk of breast cancer in China. Four hundred and sixty-four cases and 464 controls, admitted from the Department of Breast Surgery, Cancer Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, were included in this study. Adjusting age, BMI group, smoking, alcohol consumption, menopausal status, family history of breast cancer, duration of breastfeeding, age at menarche, number of pregnancies, age at first full-term pregnancy, use of estrogen and use of oral contraceptive, multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the risk of breast cancer was higher in short sleep duration group (OR = 4.86, 95%CI: 1.73–17.33). Meanwhile, rs2292912 in CRY2, rs2253820 in PER1, rs2289591 in PER1 and rs3027188 in PER1 were positively associated with the risk of breast cancer. This study supported that the short duration of sleep and four SNPs in crucial circadian genes played a role in the development of breast cancer.

As the most populous country in the world, China has made strides in health promotion in the past few decades. With the aging population, the burden of cancer in China continues to grow. Changes in risk factors for cancer, especially diet, obesity, diabetes, and air pollution, continue to fuel the shift of cancer transition in China. The burden of upper gastrointestinal cancer in China is decreasing, but still heavy. The rising burden of colorectal, prostate, and breast cancers is also significant. Lung cancer became the top cause of cancer-related deaths, together with smoking as the most important contributor to cancer deaths. The Chinese government has taken several approaches to control cancer and cancer-related risk factors. Many achievements have been made, but some challenges remain. Health China 2030 is ambitious and depicts a bright vision of the future for cancer control in China. The decrease in the cancer burden in China will require cross-sector collaboration and coordinated efforts on primary and secondary preventions by governments, public health organizations, and individuals. In this review, we describe the trends of cancer burden and discuss cancer-related risk factors in China, identifying strategies to reduce the burden of cancer in China.

BackgroundPatients with hepatitis B virus (HBV) were invited to receive ultrasound and alpha-protein examination directly in China. However, not all HBV carriers need to be subjected to further tests. This study aimed to develop a feasible primary screening method to narrow down potential high-risk individuals of liver cancer among populations with HBV.MethodsBased on a prospective community-based cohort, potential risk factors were selected as the predictors, including age, sex, smoking, alcohol consumption, diabetes, liver cancer family history, liver diseases in mothers, source of water, body mass index (BMI), and psychological trauma. Cox proportional regression model was applied to predict the 3-year absolute risk of liver cancer and derive risk scores. The area under receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) and calibration plot were used to assess the performance of the model. Bootstrap resampling was used for internal validation.ResultsAge, sex, BMI, alcohol consumption, liver diseases in mothers, and psychological trauma were independent risks of liver cancer. The 1- to 3-year AUROC of the prediction model was 71.15% (95% CI, 66.88–75.42), 71.16% (95% CI, 67.42–74.90), and 72.95% (95% CI, 64.20–81.70), respectively. The predicted risk was calibrated well with the observed liver cancer risk. Bootstrap resampling showed that C-index was 0.70 (0.67–0.74). A 32-point risk score was also developed and a score over 5 was identified for patients at extremely high risk.ConclusionsA user-friendly primary screening method was created that could estimate the 3-year absolute risk of liver cancer and identify extremely high-risk individuals among the population with HBV.

A high premium has been put on researching the effects of cold spells because of their adverse influence on people's daily lives and health. The study aimed to find the most appropriate definition of the cold spell in Shenzhen and quantify the impact of cold spells on mortality. Based on the daily mortality data in Shenzhen from 2013 to 2017 and the meteorological and pollutant data from the same period, we quantified the effect of cold spells using eight different definitions in the framework of a distributed lag non-linear model with a quasi-Poisson distribution. In Shenzhen, low temperatures increase the risk of death more significantly than high temperatures (using the optimal temperature as the cut-off value). Comparing the quasi-Akaike information criterion value, attribution fraction (b-AF), and attribution number (b-AN) for all causes of deaths and non-accidental deaths, the optimal definition of the cold spell was defined as the threshold was 3rd percentile of the daily average temperature and duration for 3 or more consecutive days (all causes: b-AF = 2.31% [1.01–3.50%], b-AN = 650; non-accidental: b-AF = 1.92% [0.57–3.17%], b-AN = 471). For cardiovascular deaths, the best definition was the temperature threshold as the 3rd percentile of the daily average temperature with a duration of 4 consecutive days (cardiovascular: b-AF = 1.37% [0.05–2.51%], b-AN = 142). Based on the best definition in the model, mortality risk increased in cold spells, with a statistically significant lag effect occurring as early as the 4th day and the effect of a single day lasting for 6 days. The maximum cumulative effect occurred on the 14th day (all-cause: RR = 1.54 [95% CI, 1.20–1.98]; non-accidental: RR = 1.43 [95% CI, 1.11–1.84]; cardiovascular: RR = 1.58 [95% CI, 1.00–2.48]). The elderly and females were more susceptible to cold spells. Cold spells and their definitions were associated with an increased risk of death. The findings of this research provide information for establishing an early warning system, developing preventive measures, and protecting susceptible populations.

Abstract Background The development of ghost cell glaucoma in patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) after intravitreous injection (IV) was rare. Here we reported a series of patients with PDR who received Intravitreous Ranibizumab (IVR) and developed ghost cell glaucoma and analyzed the potential factors that might be related to the development of ghost cell glaucoma. Methods Retrospective case series study. The medical records of 71 consecutive eyes of 68 PDR patients who received vitrectomy after IVR from January 2015 to January 2017 were reviewed. The development of ghost cell glaucoma after IVR was recorded. Characteristics of enrolled patients were retrieved from their medical charts. Factors associated with ghost cell glaucoma were compared between eyes with the development of ghost cell glaucoma and eyes without the development of ghost cell glaucoma. Variables were further enrolled in a binary backward stepwise logistic regression model, and the model that had the lowest AIC was chosen. Results There were 8 out of 71 eyes of the PDR patients developed ghost cell glaucoma after they received IVR. The interval between detection of elevation of intraocular pressure (IOP) and IV ranged from 0 to 2 days. Among them, after IVR, there were two eyes had IOP greater than 30 mmHg within 30 min, four eyes showed normal IOP at 30 min, and then developed ghost cell glaucoma within 1 day, two eyes developed ghost cell glaucoma between 24 and 48 h. The mean IOP was 46.5 ± 8.0 mmHg. All patients gained normal IOP after vitrectomy without medicine for lowering IOP. The presence of ghost cell glaucoma was associated with tractional retinal detachment (RR = 4.60 [2.02 ~ 8.48], p = 0.004) and fibrovascular membrane involving disk (RR = -3.57 [− 7.59 ~ − 0.92], p = 0.03) (AIC = 39.23, AUC = 0.88) in a logistic regression model. Conclusion Attention to postoperative IOP should be paid to patients with PDR undergoing vitrectomy who receive a preoperative IV of anti-VEGF agents. PDR patients with tractional retinal detachment or fibrovasucular membrane involving optic disc are more likely to develop ghost cell glaucoma after IV.

To examine the role of metabolites in wheat stamen and pistil development, metabolomic analyses of pistilloid stamens (PS), pistils (P), and stamens (S) from a novel wheat mutant homologous transformation sterility-1 (HTS-1) and controls from their sib-line CSTP were conducted using base gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Then, the metabolomic data were integrated with previously published transcriptomic data and analysed. In total, 141 annotated metabolites were determined from P, PS and S tissues by comparison with reference standards. A total of 90, 93 and 18 different metabolites were identified in S vs. PS, S vs. P and P vs. PS, respectively. Among the different metabolites, 80 may be associated with stamen and pistil growth. Using integration evaluations of both the previous transcriptome data and the 80 various metabolites, we found two perturbed pathways that significantly affect flower development in plants, namely, the phenylpropanoid biosynthesis and cysteine and methionine metabolism. The ethylene synthesis pathway, one key branch of the cysteine and methionine metabolic pathways, could have a pivotal role in pistillody growth involving HTS-1. We found two key enzyme genes in the ethylene synthesis pathway (the SAM synthase gene and the ACC synthase gene) that have higher expression levels in stamens than in pistilloid stamens or pistils. We speculate, that the decrease in ethylene content during stamen development leads to pistillody traits in HTS-1. This study helps elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying stamen and pistil growth in wheat.

Abstract Background Stroke, especially ischemic stroke (IS), has been a severe public health problem around the world. However, the association between air pollution and ischemic stroke remains ambiguous. Methods A total of 63, 997 IS cases aged 18 years or above in Shenzhen were collected from 2008 to 2014. We used the time-stratified case-crossover design combining with distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM) to estimate the association between air pollution and IS onset. Furthermore, this study explored the variability across gender and age groups. Results The cumulative exposure-response curves were J-shaped for SO2, NO2 and PM10, and V-shaped for O3, and crossed over the relative risk (RR) of one. The 99th, 50th (median) and 1st percentiles of concentration (μg/m3) respectively were 37.86, 10.06, 3.71 for SO2, 116.26, 41.29, 18.51 for NO2, 145.94, 48.29, 16.14 for PM10, and 111.57, 49.82, 16.00 for O3. Extreme high-SO2, high-NO2, high-PM10, high-O3, and low-O3 concentration increased the risk of IS, with the maximum RR values and 95% CIs: 1.50(1.22, 1.84) (99th vs median) at 0–12 lag days, 1.37(1.13, 1.67) (99th vs median) at 0–10 lag days, 1.26(1.04, 1.53) (99th vs median) at 0–12 lag days, 1.25(1.04, 1.49) (99th vs median) at 0–14 lag days, and 1.29(1.03, 1.61) (1st vs median) at 0–14 lag days, respectively. The statistically significant minimal RR value and 95% CI was 0.79(0.66,0.94) at 0–10 lag days for extreme low-PM10. The elderly aged over 65 years were susceptible to extreme pollution conditions. Difference from the vulnerability of males to extreme high-SO2, high-NO2 and low-O3, females were vulnerable to extreme high-PM10 and high-O3. Comparing with the elderly, adults aged 18–64 year were immune to extreme low-NO2 and low-PM10. However, no association between CO and IS onset was found. Conclusions SO2, NO2, PM10 and O3 exerted non-linear and delayed influence on IS, and such influence varied with gender and age. These findings may have significant public health implications for the prevention of IS.

Investigating the wave hydrodynamics of free-surface flow over rippled bottoms is a continuing concern due to the existence of submarine multiple sandbars and ambient flow in coastal and estuarial areas. More attention to free-surface wave stimulation has been received from the perspective of resonant wave-wave interaction, which is an intensive way for wave energy transfer and a potential way for wave component generation. However, the basic behavior of the triad resonant interaction of this problem is still limited and unclear. In this study, the triad resonant interaction induced by steady free-surface flow over rippled bottoms is numerically investigated by means of the High-Order Spectral (HOS) method. By considering the interactions among free-surface waves, ambient current, and rippled bottoms, the numerical model is applied for this situation based on Zakharov equation with ambient flow term. The temporal evolution of the triad resonant wave amplitude has been numerically investigated and compared well with multiple-scale expansion perturbation theory. Specifically, the temporal evolution behaviors of all six triad resonant wave components are confirmed by both numerical simulation and nonlinear perturbation analysis.

For problem of low localization accuracy of quantum particle swarm optimization-sequence based localization (QPSO-SBL) method, a wireless access point(AP) selection algorithm based on information gain was used to optimize QPSO-SBL method, and a coal mine underground localization method based on wireless AP selection was proposed. In the method, all APs are ranked in descending order according to comprehensive identifiability of AP, and the first k APs are chosen to form an available AP set. The available AP set is considered as input of QPSO-SBL method, and localization results are obtained by QPSO-SBL method. The test results show that compared with QPSO-SBL method, the average localization error of the coal mine underground localization method based on wireless AP selection is reduced by 10.2% with stronger stability and better localization effect.

Purpose: To investigate whether dexmedetomidine (Dex) can reduce the production of inflammatory factor IL-1β by inhibiting the activation of NLRP3 inflammasome in hippocampal microglia, thereby alleviating the inflammatory response of the central nervous system induced by surgical injury. Methods: Exploratory laparotomy was used in experimental models in this study. Totally 48 Sprague Dawley male rats were randomly divided into 4 groups (n = 12 for each), respectively sham control (group A), laparotomy only (group B); and Dex treatment with different doses of 5 μg/kg (group D1) or 10 μg/kg (group D2). Rats in groups D1 and D2 were intraperitoneally injected with corresponding doses of Dex every 6 h. The rats were sacrificed 12 h after operation; the hippocampus tissues were isolated, and frozen sections were made. The microglia activation was estimated by immunohistochemistry. The protein expression of NLRP3, caspase-1, ASC and IL-1β were detected by immunoblotting. All data were presented as mean ± standard deviation, and independent sample t test was used to analyze the statistical difference between groups. Language and social symptoms improve with age in some autistic toddlers, but not in others, and such outcome differences are not clearly predictable from clinical scores alone. Here we aim to identify early-age brain alterations in autism that are prognostic of future language ability. Leveraging 372 longitudinal structural MRI scans from 166 autistic toddlers and 109 typical toddlers and controlling for brain size, we find that, compared to typical toddlers, autistic toddlers show differentially larger or thicker temporal and fusiform regions; smaller or thinner inferior frontal lobe and midline structures; larger callosal subregion volume; and smaller cerebellum. Most differences are replicated in an independent cohort of 75 toddlers. These brain alterations improve accuracy for predicting language outcome at 6-month follow-up beyond intake clinical and demographic variables. Temporal, fusiform, and inferior frontal alterations are related to autism symptom severity and cognitive impairments at early intake ages. Among autistic toddlers, brain alterations in social, language and face processing areas enhance the prediction of the childs future language ability.

BACKGROUND: Infant formula in the United States contains abundant iron, raising health concerns about excess iron intake in early infancy. OBJECTIVES: Using a piglet model, we explored the impact of high iron fortification and prebiotic or synbiotic supplementation on iron homeostasis and trace mineral bioavailability. METHODS: Twenty-four piglets were stratified and randomly assigned to treatments on postnatal day 2. Piglets were individually housed and received an iron-adequate milk diet (AI), a high-iron milk diet (HI), HI supplemented with 5% inulin (HI with a prebiotic [HIP]), or HIP with an oral gavage of Ligilactobacillus agilis YZ050, an inulin-fermenting strain, every third day (HI with synbiotic [HIS]). Milk was provided in 14 meals daily, mimicking formula feeding in infants. Fecal consistency score and body weight were recorded daily or every other day. Blood and feces were sampled weekly, and tissues collected on postnatal day 29. Data were analyzed using mixed model analysis of variance with repeated measures whenever necessary. RESULTS: Diet did not affect growth. HI increased hemoglobin, hematocrit, and serum iron compared to AI. Despite marginal adequacy, AI upregulated iron transporter genes and maintained satisfactory iron status in most pigs. HI upregulated hepcidin gene expression in liver, caused pronounced tissue iron deposition, and markedly increased colonic and fecal iron. Inulin supplementation, regardless of L. agilis YZ050, not only attenuated hepatic iron overload but also decreased colonic and fecal iron without altering pH or the expression of iron regulatory genes. HI lowered zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) in the duodenum and liver compared to AI, whereas HIP and HIS further decreased Zn and Cu in the liver and diminished colonic and fecal trace minerals. CONCLUSIONS: Early-infancy excessive iron fortification causes iron overload and compromises Zn and Cu absorption. Inulin decreases trace mineral absorption likely by enhancing gut peristalsis and stool frequency.

Thyroid tumor and thyroid goiter are prevalent disease around the world. In this case-control study, we investigated the association between exposure to a total of twelve mineral elements and thyroid disease as well as thyroid functions. Participants with thyroid tumor or goiter (N = 197) were matched with a healthy population (N = 197) by age (± 2 years old) and same sex. Questionnaires were used to collect data about the demographic characteristics and information of subjects. Serum and urine samples were collected simultaneously for each of the subjects. Mineral elements, iodine level of urine and levels of the total seven thyroid function indexes in serum were detected respectively. Conditional logistic regression was applied to estimate the associations between mineral elements and the risk of thyroid tumor and goiter through single-element models and multiple-element models. Multiple linear regression was used to evaluate relationships between mineral elements and percentage changes of thyroid functions. Higher concentrations of mineral elements in the recruited population were found in this study than other comparable studies, and the levels of chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), selenium (Se), antimony (Sb), thallium (Tl) and lead (Pb) in the case group were lower than the control group. According to the single-element models, Cr, Mn, Ni, Sb and Tl showed significant negative associations with the risk of thyroid tumor and goiter, and, Cd showed nonmonotonic dose response. Cd and mercury (Hg) showed a nonmonotonic percentage change with T4, while Tl was associated with the increased FT4 in the control group. Therefore, Cd, Hg and Tl may disturb the balance of thyroid function to some extent, and Cr, Mn, Ni, Cd, Sb, and Tl may become potential influencing factors for the risk of thyroid tumor and goiter.

Abstract Background The prevalence of diabetes in China has rapidly increased in recent years. Family history and physical inactivity are known risk factors for developing diabetes. As automated telephone-based communication is recognized as a cost-effective health promoting device, the present study aims at evaluating the efficacy of an automated telephone counselor (TLC-PA-China) for promoting physical activity to the WHO-recommended level among physically inactive family members of diabetes patients. Methods This study employed a parallel, two-group, non-blinded, randomized controlled trial design with equal allocation to the intervention group (TLC-PA-China), and a control group. Voluntary participants with at least one first-degree relative diagnosed with diabetes mellitus were recruited through eight Community Health Centers in Shenzhen, China. The intervention group was requested to use the system once per week during a six-month period. The control group received an information pamphlet about the benefits of regular physical activity. Results Two hundred ten eligible participants were randomized to TLC-PA-China (n = 109) or Control (n = 101) groups. BACKGROUND: Our previous study has reported that supplementation of oligosaccharide-based polymer enhances gut health and disease resistance of pigs infected with enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC) F18 in a manner similar to carbadox. The objective of this study was to investigate the impacts of oligosaccharide-based polymer or antibiotic on the host metabolic profiles and colon microbiota of weaned pigs experimentally infected with ETEC F18. RESULTS: Multivariate analysis highlighted the differences in the metabolic profiles of serum and colon digesta which were predominantly found between pigs supplemented with oligosaccharide-based polymer and antibiotic. The relative abundance of metabolic markers of immune responses and nutrient metabolisms, such as amino acids and carbohydrates, were significantly differentiated between the oligosaccharide-based polymer and antibiotic groups (q  2.0). Objective: Obesity/metabolic syndrome and hyperuricemia are clinically associated; however, the association of obesity/metabolic syndrome-related genetic variants with hyperuricemia is not clear. Therefore, we assessed this association in Chinese men diagnosed with hyperuricemia in comparison to a non-hyperuricemia group.Methods: We genotyped 47 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) previously identified to be associated with obesity or metabolic syndrome in 474 adult males (aged ≥ 18 years) using multiplex polymerase chain reaction. Multivariate logistic regression was used to investigate the association between the genetic variations and hyperuricemia. Stratified analyses were applied to further assess the associations.Results: The obesity-related SNP in MSRA rs545854 significantly affected serum uric acid levels. In addition, the G-allele of rs545854 was positively associated with the risk of hyperuricemia [odds ratio (OR) = 2.80, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.19–6.64, P = 0.0188]. After adjusting the model for body mass index and central obesity, rs545854 was shown to be an independent factor increasing the risk of hyperuricemia (OR = 2.81, 95%CI = 1.18–6.70, P = 0.0196). Stratified analyses also showed a significant association between rs545854 and hyperuricemia among meat eaters (OR = 2.62, 95%CI = 1.09–6.26, P = 0.0308).Conclusion: The obesity-related SNP rs545854 was correlated with the serum uric acid level and risk of hyperuricemia in a male Chinese population. Therefore, men carrying this SNP could benefit from limiting their meat consumption to prevent hyperuricemia. These findings suggest an underlying genetic link between obesity and hyperuricemia worthy of further exploration.

Based on the Rayleigh scattering theory, the radiation forces and the trap stiffness on Rayleigh dielectric sphere induced by a focused Laguerre-Gaussian correlated Schell-model (LGCSM) beam are theoretically studied. It is found that by choosing the appropriate transverse coherence width, mode orders, transverse beam width, and focus lengths, a Rayleigh particle whose refractive index is larger or smaller than the ambient medium can be trapped. Our results will have some theoretical reference value for optical trapping.

Based on comprehensive analysis of deposition and structure, the horizontal and vertical characteristics of the Weiyuan-Anyue erosion-extension groove have been studied by outcrop, drilling, well logging and seismic data. According to the strata, lithology, structure and regional evolution, Sinian system before the erosion has been reconstructed to show the development and transformation of the erosion-extension groove in the Tongwan movement. The Weiyuan-Anyue tensional corrosion trough is distributed along the Penglai-Anyue-Rongchang in NW direction, with the west area steeper than the east in groove. According to the study of the Weiyuan-Longnüsi seismic profile across the middle area of erosion-extension groove, the formation of the Weiyuan-Anyue tensional corrosion trough is the synthetic result of different geological processes from differential uplift, differential erosion and dissolution in the Dengying Formation caused by the multiple-phase episode grabon or horst movement of the basement fault in Sinian. The formation of the Weiyuan-Anyue erosion-extension groove can be divided into three stages, and the erosion and dissolution can be calculated quantitatively by denudation recovery profile, its maximum can reach 600 m.
