IntroductionMild-to-moderate traumatic brain injury (mmTBI) that lead to deficits in balance and gait are difficult to resolve through standard therapy protocols, and these deficits can severely impact a patient's quality of life. Recently, translingual neural stimulation (TLNS) has emerged as a potential therapy for mmTBI-related balance and gait deficits by inducing neuroplastic changes in the brain gray matter structure. However, it is still unclear how interactions within and between functional networks in brain are affected by TLNS. The current study aimed to extend our previous resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) study investigating the effects of TLNS intervention on outcome measures related to gait and balance.MethodsAn experimental PoNS device was utilized to deliver the TLNS. The 2-week TLNS intervention program, specifically stimulation during focused physical therapy focused on recovery of gait and balance, included twice-daily treatment in the laboratory and the same program at home during the intervening weekend. The resting-state fMRI datasets at pre- and post-interventions were collected by 3T MRI scanner with nine mmTBI patients. All participants also received both Sensory Organization Test (SOT) and Dynamic Gait Index (DGI) testing pre- and post-intervention as part of the behavioral assessment.ResultsCompared to baseline, TLNS intervention led to statistically significant improvements in both the SOT [t(8) = 2.742, p = 0.028] and the DGI [t(8) = 2.855, p = 0.024] scores. Moreover, significant increases in intra- and inter-network RSFC were observed, particularly within the visual, default mode, dorsal attention, frontoparietal (FPN), and somatosensory (SMN) networks. Additionally, there were significant correlations between the SOT and inter-network FC [between FPN and SMN, r(9) = –0.784, p = 0.012] and between the DGI and intra-network FC [within SMN, r(9) = 0.728, p = 0.026].DiscussionThese findings suggest that TLNS intervention is an effective in increasing somatosensory processing, vestibular-visual interaction, executive control and flexible shifting, and TLNS may be an effective approach to inducing brain network plasticity and may serve as a potential therapy for mmTBI-related gait and balance deficits.

IntroductionCrohn’s disease (CD), one of the main phenotypes of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract. It can impact the function of gastrointestinal secretions, as well as increasing the intestinal permeability leading to an aberrant immunological response and subsequent intestinal inflammation. Studies have reported anatomical and functional brain changes in Crohn’s Disease patients (CDs), possibly due to increased inflammatory markers and microglial cells that play key roles in communicating between the brain, gut, and systemic immune system. To date, no studies have demonstrated similarities between morphological brain changes seen in IBD and brain morphometry observed in older healthy controls..MethodsFor the present study, twelve young CDs in remission (M = 26.08 years, SD = 4.9 years, 7 male) were recruited from an IBD Clinic. Data from 12 young age-matched healthy controls (HCs) (24.5 years, SD = 3.6 years, 8 male) and 12 older HCs (59 years, SD = 8 years, 8 male), previously collected for a different study under a similar MR protocol, were analyzed as controls. T1 weighted images and structural image processing techniques were used to extract surface-based brain measures, to test our hypothesis that young CDs have different brain surface morphometry than their age-matched young HCs and furthermore, appear more similar to older HCs. The phonemic verbal fluency (VF) task (the Controlled Oral Word Association Test, COWAT) (Benton, 1976) was administered to test verbal cognitive ability and executive control.Results/DiscussionOn the whole, CDs had more brain regions with differences in brain morphometry measures when compared to the young HCs as compared to the old HCs, suggesting that CD has an effect on the brain that makes it appear more similar to old HCs. Additionally, our study demonstrates this atypical brain morphometry is associated with function on a cognitive task. These results suggest that even younger CDs may be showing some evidence of structural brain changes that demonstrate increased resemblance to older HC brains rather than their similarly aged healthy counterparts.

Abstract Introduction Being choked/strangled during partnered sex is an emerging sexual behavior, particularly prevalent among young adult women. Using a multiparameter morphometric imaging approach, we aimed to characterize neuroanatomical differences between young adult women (18–30 years old) who were exposed to frequent sexual choking and their choking naïve controls. Methods This cross‐sectional study consisted of two groups (choking [≥4 times in the past 30 days] vs. choking‐naïve group). Participants who reported being choked four or more times during sex in the past 30 days were enrolled in the choking group, whereas those without were assigned to the choking naïve group. High‐resolution anatomical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data were analyzed using both volumetric features (cortical thickness) and geometric features (fractal dimensionality, gyrification, sulcal depth). Results Forty‐one participants (choking n = 20; choking‐naïve n = 21) contributed to the final analysis. The choking group showed significantly increased cortical thickness across multiple regions (e.g., fusiform, lateral occipital, lingual gyri) compared to the choking‐naïve group. Widespread reductions of the gyrification were observed in the choking group as opposed to the choking‐naïve group. However, there was no group difference in sulcal depth. The fractal dimensionality showed bi‐directional results, where the choking group exhibited increased dimensionality in areas including the postcentral gyrus, insula, and fusiform, whereas decreased dimensionality was observed in the bilateral superior frontal gyrus and pericalcarine cortex. Conclusion These data in cortical morphology suggest that sexual choking events may be associated with neuroanatomical alteration. A longitudinal study with multimodal assessment is needed to better understand the temporal ordering of sexual choking and neurological outcomes.

Musical training has been evidenced to facilitate music perception, which refers to the consistencies, boundaries, and segmentations in pieces of music that are associated with the Gestalt principles. The current study aims to test whether musical training is beneficial to non-musical cognitive ability with Gestalt principles. Three groups of Chinese participants (with early, late, and no musical training) were compared in terms of their performances on the Motor-Free Visual Perception Test (MVPT). The results show that the participants with early musical training had significantly better performance in the Gestalt-like Visual Closure subtest than those with late and no musical training, but no significances in other Gestalt-unlike subtests was identified (Visual Memory, Visual Discrimination, Spatial Relationship, Figure Ground in MVPT). This study suggests the benefit of early musical training on non-musical cognitive ability with Gestalt principles.

Throughout adulthood, the brain undergoes an array of structural and functional changes during the typical aging process. These changes involve decreased brain volume, reduced synaptic density, and alterations in white matter (WM). Although there have been some previous neuroimaging studies that have measured the ability of adult language production and its correlations to brain function, structural gray matter volume, and functional differences between young and old adults, the structural role of WM in adult language production in individuals across the life span remains to be thoroughly elucidated. This study selected 38 young adults and 35 old adults for diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and performed the Controlled Oral Word Association Test to assess verbal fluency (VF). Tract-Based Spatial Statistics were employed to evaluate the voxel-based group differences of diffusion metrics for the values of fractional anisotropy (FA), mean diffusivity (MD), axial diffusivity (AD), radial diffusivity (RD), and local diffusion homogeneity (LDH) in 12 WM regions of interest associated with language production. To investigate group differences on each DTI metric, an analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) controlling for sex and education level was performed, and the statistical threshold was considered at p < 0.00083 (0.05/60 labels) after Bonferroni correction for multiple comparisons. Significant differences in DTI metrics identified in the ANCOVA were used to perform correlation analyses with VF scores. Compared to the old adults, the young adults had significantly (1) increased FA values on the bilateral anterior corona radiata (ACR); (2) decreased MD values on the right ACR, but increased MD on the left uncinate fasciculus (UF); and (3) decreased RD on the bilateral ACR. There were no significant differences between the groups for AD or LDH. Moreover, the old adults had only a significant correlation between the VF score and the MD on the left UF. There were no significant correlations between VF score and DTI metrics in the young adults. This study adds to the growing body of research that WM areas involved in language production are sensitive to aging.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) of varying severity can result in balance and movement disorders, for which the benefits of treatment with physical therapy has limits. In this study, patients with post-TBI balance issues received translingual neural stimulation (TLNS) in concert with physical therapy and the effects on the grey matter volume (GMV) were evaluated. TBI-related balance and movement impairments were also assessed through Sensory Organization Test (SOT) and Dynamic Gait Index (DGI) scoring. When comparing pre- and post-intervention results, the most prominent GMV changes were increases within the cerebellum, and temporal regions, which are involved in automatic processing of gait, balance, motor control, and visual-motion. Decreases of GMV in frontal, occipital lobes (involved in less automatic processing or more conscious/effortful processing of gait, balance, motor control, and vision) positively correlated to increases in SOT/DGI scores. These results indicate that TLNS can produce brain plasticity changes leading to positive changes in functional assessments. Overall, these data indicate that TLNS delivered in conjunction with physical therapy, is a safe, effective, and integrative way to treat TBI.

Human papillomaviruses (HPVs), for instance, HPV 16 and HPV 18, are concerned associated with cervical cancer. Thus, it is essential to suppress HPVs-in HPV-positive cervical cancer for treating cervical cancer. The purpose of this study was to explore the proposed molecular mechanisms, which that underlies the antintumor potential of juglone to treat of HPV-positive on cervical cancer cells. The results showed that juglone suppressed HPV-positive cell growth in a dose- and time-dependent way. In addition, cell invasion and metastasis were also inhibited by juglone. Nevertheless, when pin 1 was knocked down in HPV-positive cells, cell proliferation, invasion and metastasis were reduced. This study was designed to acquire an understanding of the mechanism of invasion and metastasis in HPV-positive cells suppressed by juglone. Congenital Zika virus (ZIKV) exposure results in a spectrum of disease ranging from severe birth defects to delayed onset neurodevelopmental deficits. ZIKV-related neuropathogenesis, predictors of birth defects, and neurodevelopmental deficits are not well defined in people. Here we assess the methodological and statistical feasibility of a congenital ZIKV exposure macaque model for identifying infant neurobehavior and brain abnormalities that may underlie neurodevelopmental deficits. We inoculated five pregnant macaques with ZIKV and mock-inoculated one macaque in the first trimester. Following birth, growth, ocular structure/function, brain structure, hearing, histopathology, and neurobehavior were quantitatively assessed during the first week of life. We identified the typical pregnancy outcomes of congenital ZIKV infection, with fetal demise and placental abnormalities. We estimated sample sizes needed to define differences between groups and demonstrated that future studies quantifying brain region volumes, retinal structure, hearing, and visual pathway function require a sample size of 14 animals per group (14 ZIKV, 14 control) to detect statistically significant differences in at least half of the infant exam parameters. Establishing the parameters for future studies of neurodevelopmental outcomes following congenital ZIKV exposure in macaques is essential for robust and rigorous experimental design.

The empirical study presented in this chapter has implications for performance studies, philosophy of music, music aesthetics and music perception. The impetus for the experiment was pedagogical and originated in the piano studio. The working hypothesis was that in the teaching of classical technique there can be negative consequences for students (physical tension, self-consciousness) when instructors give too much detailed verbal information about how specific body parts should function when performing this phrase or that. Our research poses the questions: Are there distinctive and measurable changes in pianists’ body use and gestures when they are invited simply to “enjoy” playing a piece? Are such distinctive qualities perceived by others, and if so, in what way? The protocol for our study comprised four advanced-level classical pianists, all given the same two (contrasting) pieces to learn and memorize on their own. In the motion-capture laboratory, they performed them in two ways: (1) “as correctly as you can” and (2) “just enjoying yourself.” The resulting three-dimensional, point-light recordings of piano-playing “avatars” were subsequently viewed by two groups — trained musicians and non-musicians — from inside an fMRI scanner. The neurological activity of the subjects in the scanner was monitored while they viewed the contrasting videos and answered a series of questions about each. These questions dealt with their perceptions of the congruence of music and gesture, what the gestures themselves conveyed, and how the subjects responded to observing the distillation of expressive human movement that is presented by a performing “avatar.”

Previous studies have used task-related and "static" resting-state fMRI (RS-fMRI) to investigate the neural basis of pitch identification (PI) ability in nonmusicians. Recent studies have shown that RSfMRI is of nonstationarity, so "dynamic" RS-fMRI is needed to capture the temporal variability and the different internal states (in terms of regional interactions) in the brain networks. Using a large sample of Chinese nonmusicians (N = 320, with 56 of whom having musical training) and applying the sliding windows method, the current study examined the associations among musical training, PI ability, and dynamic resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC). Results showed that musical training was associated with increased dynamic RSFC within the networks for the following cognitive functions: working memory, language, attention, motor control, vision, and auditory perception. For participants with musical training, PI ability was associated with dynamic RSFC within the networks for the following cognitive functions: working memory, attention, and executive control. For participants without musical training, PI ability was associated with dynamic RSFC within the networks for auditory and visuospatial perception. These results from dynamic RSFC supplemented earlier results based on static RSFC, suggesting that dynamic RSFC is a potential tool for evaluating music cognition or music ability. Previous studies have examined the neural correlates of emotion regulation and the neural changes that are evoked bymusic exposure. However, the link betweenmusic and emotion regulation is poorly understood. The objectives of this review are to (1) synthesize what is known about the neural correlates of emotion regulation and music-evoked emotions, and (2) consider the possibility of therapeutic effects of music on emotion dysregulation. Music-evoked emotions can modulate activities in both cortical and subcortical systems, and across cortical-subcortical networks. Functions within these networks are integral to generation and regulation of emotions. Since dysfunction in these networks are observed in numerous psychiatric disorders, a better understanding of neural correlates of music exposure may lead to more systematic and effective use of music therapy in emotion dysregulation. This study examined whether musical training was associated with decision-making ability. Three groups of Chinese participants (with early, late, and no musical training) were compared in terms of their performance on the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT). Results showed that the participants with early musical training had significantly better performance in both decision under ambiguity and decision under risk than those with late and no musical training. These results were independent of participants' years of musical training, IQ, working memory, and emotion perceptions. Previous research has found that musicians with absolute pitch showed better cognitive functions. Little is known, however, about how pitch identification (PI) ability is linked to cognitive functions among nonmusicians. In the present study, a PI test and 8 tests tapping the 3 components of executive function (2 tests of the working memory component, 4 on the inhibition component, and 2 on the shifting component) were administered to a large sample (N = 554) of Chinese college students who were nonmusic majors. A subsample with superior PI ability (n = 44) was identified and a matched sample with average PI ability (n = 44) was selected. Two-way ANOVA (PI Ability x Music Training) was conducted on scores from the executive function tests. Results revealed that individuals with superior PI ability showed higher levels in all 3 components of executive functions than those without superior PI ability. Musical training experience (regardless whether it was early or late onset) was positively associated with a measure of working memory and a measure of cognitive inhibition. OBJECTIVE: Examine whether there are unique patterns of brain activation associated with exposure to photographic sky compositions (representing nature stimuli) as compared with other positive, negative, and neutral images. BACKGROUND: The positive impact of nature images on health outcomes traditionally has been measured using behavioral and physiological indicators. However, there is a lack of understanding of the underlying neural mechanism that explains this positive influence. METHODS: A combination of behavioral responses and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) technology was used to address research questions. Ten participants belonging to five age groups were subjected to short (25 seconds) exposures of 32 images while their brain activation was monitored via the BOLD response. In a separate run, participants were subjected to extended exposures (12 minutes) of a sky composition and an image of a traditional ceiling. RESULTS: The results show that the activation patterns produced by sky compositions and positive images were quite similar as compared to negative or neutral images. However, sky compositions also produced some unique areas of activation, including those associated with spatial cognition, the expanse of space, circadian rhythm, and perceived motion. In the extended exposure condition, sky compositions tended to activate regions associated with dreaming, while traditional ceiling images activated regions that are related to face processing and potentially visual hallucinations. CONCLUSIONS: Nature stimuli, with a combination of vegetation and sky, may produce unique beneficial effects not present in general positive stimuli. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
