Abstract Studies of ocean island basalts have identified a Prevalent Mantle (PREMA) component as a fundamental feature of mantle geochemical arrays; however, its origin and distribution are highly controversial, including its potential link to plumes sourced in low-shear-wave velocity provinces (LLSVPs) above the core-mantle boundary. In this study, we interrogate the compositional systematics of ~ 3500 Cenozoic oceanic and continental sodic basalts to provide insights into the origin and distribution of PREMA. We find that low-degree basaltic melts with high Nb concentrations located away from deep-mantle plumes have PREMA-like Sr-Nd-Hf isotopic signatures, implying that PREMA is highly fusible and not exclusively associated with LLSVPs. Geochemical modelling and mantle convection simulations indicate that PREMA could have been generated soon after Earth accretion, experiencing only minimal melting or enrichment, and then scattered throughout the upper mantle, rather than being the result of mixing between depleted and enriched mantle components.

Abstract Comprehending the temperature distribution within Earth's lithospheric mantle is of paramount importance for understanding the dynamics of Earth's interior. Traditional mineral‐based thermobarometers effectively constrain temperature and pressure for particular compositions, but their application is limited at the global scale. Here, we trained machine‐learning (ML) algorithms on 985 published high‐temperature and high‐pressure experiments for use as thermometers and barometers to overcome the limitations of classic methods. We compared our ML models to classic thermobarometers to assess the accuracies of predicted pressures and temperatures. The comparison shows that the ML models outperform classic methods and better fit various mineral pairs. Global application of the ML models unveils mantle conditions beneath cratons. Furthermore, depths to the lithosphere‐asthenosphere boundary (LAB) calibrated based on the ML thermobarometry results are generally deeper by ∼40 km than those derived geophysically, implying the existence of melt‐bearing or hydrated mineral zones at the LAB.

Identifying magmatic rock associations in a subduction zone is substantial for understanding the related geodynamic evolution. The final closure time of the Paleo-Asian Ocean and the exact subduction processes have continuously been controversial, hindering our recognition of the tectonic evolution of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB). Here we investigated the Early Permian gabbros-granodiorites from Xi Ujimqin in the northern Inner Mongolian region. The gabbros have slightly depleted light rare-earth elements [(La/Yb)N = 0.8] and flat heavy rare earth elements (HREE) [(Gd/Yb)N = 1.1] that are comparable to those of N-MORB. They show depletion in Nb and Ta, positive whole-rock εNd(t) values of +7.7 to +8.7 and zircon εHf(t) values of +8.7 to +10.6. These mafic rocks are interpreted to be products of partial melting of depleted mantle that had been metasomatized by slab-derived fluids, with subsequent fractional crystallization and minor crustal contamination. These granodiorites chemically resemble typical adakites and have MORB-like whole-rock SrNd isotopic compositions (87Sr/86Sri = 0.7028–0.7029; εNd(t) = +8.2–+8.5) and positive zircon εHf(t) (+13.4–+15.9) values, suggesting that they originated from the subducted slab-melts and reacted with mantle wedge peridotite. UPb zircon dating shows emplacement of N-MORB-type gabbros and adakitic granodiorites at ∼297 Ma and ∼290 Ma, respectively. Our new data indicate the presence coeval slab-derived adakites and slab fluid-metasomatized asthenosphere-derived N-MORB-type rocks, indicating that subduction lasted until at least the Early Permian. Such an association along with the extension-related magmatism in northern Mongolia recorded the northward ridge subduction of the Paleo-Asian Ocean during the Late Carboniferous–Early Permian. This model is consistent with the spatial distribution and the ages of magmatic activity with positive εNd(t)–εHf(t) values from this region. Ridge subduction and induced slab windows probably played a key role in Paleozoic crustal growth of CAOB, and by inference in the other accretionary orogens throughout Earth history.

Based on Nickel isotope analysis of meteorites and terrestrial rocks, the authors suggest that the Bulk Silicate Earth has a sub-chondritic Nickel isotope composition. This signature is thought to result from the impact and accretion of a Mercury-like impactor which originated from the innermost Solar System.

AbstractThe Phanerozoic granites in northeast China bear key information for studying the tectonic evolution and crustal growth or reworking in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB). The Daqing granitic batholith widely outcrops as a high-level intrusion in the Xing’an-Mongolia Orogenic Belt, southeastern CAOB. Three types of enclaves in granites have been identified: (1) mafic magmatic enclaves (MMEs), (2) volcanic xenoliths, and (3) biotite-rich enclaves. The batholith is mainly composed of peraluminous biotite granite and granodiorite with SiO2=63.95−69.48 wt.%, A/CNK=1.15−1.27, and 2.54 to 4.30 wt.% of normative corundum. They exhibit remarkable enrichment in large ion lithophile elements (LILEs; K, Rb, Th, and Pb) and depletion in high field strength elements (HFSEs; Nb, Ta, and Ti), P, Eu, and Sr, as well as relatively enriched Sr-Nd isotopes (87Sr/86Sri=0.70530−0.70576, εNdt=–0.1−+0.2). Zircon U-Pb dating suggests that this batholith was emplaced in the Early Permian (ca. 283-282 Ma), consistent with a period of intensive magmatic activities in northern Inner Mongolia. The Nb/Ta ratios of MMEs (17.6-20.1) are higher than those of the host granites (11.4-12.5), together with the reaction rims where biotite crystals cluster around the amphibole cores, suggesting magma mixing between mantle- and crust-derived melts. Zircons from a biotite-rich enclave define a protolith age of ca. 320 Ma and an anatectic age at ca. 281 Ma. Whole-rock Sr-Nd isotopic modelling and zircon Hf isotopes reveal that the batholith was mainly produced by remelting of newly accreted continental crust with minor addition of mantle-derived materials. Trace-element anomalies in the continental crust (e.g., Nb-Ta-Pb) are useful to decipher the formation and evolution of continents. We found that the trace-element patterns of upper, middle, and lower crust are all marked by strongly negative phosphorus anomalies, which were not likely to have been generated directly by mantle melting. In order to address this "crust composition paradox," we compiled major- and trace-element data from global arc magmas, igneous minerals, and deep arc cumulates and found that the phosphorus deficit in continental crust is coupled with an elevated Th/La ratio. This feature can be best explained by the fractional crystallization of apatite during arc magma evolution rather than the influence of a subducted slab. Accumulation of apatite-bearing mafic cumulates in deep arcs followed by foundering into the upper mantle causes the mismatch in the phosphorus systematics between the mantle and the continental crust. The Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) is one of the largest accretionary orogens on Earth and preserves evidence that more than 50% of this orogen represents juvenile crustal growth over an extended period of some 750 million years from ca. 1000 Ma to ca. 250 Ma. However, the mechanism of crustal growth is controversial, as implied by a variety of proposed models ranging from contributions of mantle-derived basaltic underplating in a post-collisional extensional setting to subduction-related processes in an island arc setting. To distinguish among these models, we report petrological, geochemical, whole-rock Sr-Nd isotope and zircon U-Pb and Hf isotope analyses of late Paleozoic felsic igneous rocks from the northern Inner Mongolia region, southeastern CAOB. New zircon U-Pb analyses of three plutonic and extrusive magmatic suites yield Late Carboniferous to Early Permian ages of 31-279 Ma. The Xi Ujimqin granodiorites have low-K tholeiitic to calc-alkaline, metaluminous to weakly peraluminous compositions, and are magnesian I-type granitoids. These granitoids are also characterized by relatively high MgO and Sr contents, high Mg# values, mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB)-like Nd-Hf isotope compositions and young Nd-Hf model ages of 600-298 Ma. These features indicate that the parental magmas of the Xi Ujimqin I-type granitoids originated from a depleted lithospheric mantle that had been metasomatized by fluids released from a subducting slab. By contrast, the Xilinhot alkali-feldspar granites and Dashizhai rhyolites display geochemical signatures of ferroan granites. These, together with their moderately depleted Nd-Hf isotope compositions and young Nd-Hf model ages of 809--277 Ma, suggest that they were produced by re-melting of juvenile lower crust via underplating of mantle-derived magmas. The coexistence of an association of boninite-adakite-high-Mg andesite-Nb-enriched basalt, and MORB to ocean island basalt-type mafic rocks in the northern Inner Mongolia region implies a dramatic change in composition from fluid-related calc-alkaline arc magmatism to melt-related and mantle-derived magmatism initiated by upwelling asthenosphere. We infer that ridge subduction may have occurred in this region during Late Carboniferous to Early Permian. Combined with previous studies, there are two ridge subduction events during the early and late Paleozoic in Inner Mongolia within the southeastern CAOB, which coincide with two large-volume magmatic flare-ups (300 ± 20 and 450 ± 20 Ma). Furthermore, our model calculations suggest that most of the juvenile crust in the southeastern CAOB was generated in a relatively short interval (-20-40 m.y.) during each long-lived tectonic cycle (>140 m.y. spanning oceanic rifting, subduction, and collision) of magmatic activity. Ridge subduction may have played a significant role in the rhythmic growth of juvenile crust in the CAOB during the Phanerozoic. Repeated cycles of punctuated, rapid growth of juvenile crust associated with long-lived subduction systems represent a pattern that may be generalized to other Phanerozoic accretionary belts on Earth. It is shown that the imaging visibility of intensity correlated scattered field may be utilized to determine the normalized correlation coefficient of the scattering potential (CCSP) of the quasi-homogeneous (QH) media illuminated by a scalar plane wave. The relationship between the imaging visibility and the CCSP is constructed by analytical forms. The Mesoarchean to Neoarchean period (ca. 3.0-2.5 Ga) is the most important stage during the emergence and evolution of plate tectonics. However, plate subduction at this time may have been less stable and perhaps more susceptible to the lubrication effect of sediments than the modern counterpart. Such predictions have not yet been verified by field-based investigations. In this work, we identified two types of rock units (i.e., sanukitoids and associated adakitic suites, exposed in the Eastern Hebei Complex of the North China Craton) and illustrated their petrogenesis and tectonic context through field, geochronologic, geochemical, and isotopic investigations. Laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry zircon U-Pb analyses suggest that the two magmatic suites formed within a relatively short time span of ca. 2596-2544 Ma and ca. 2559-2533 Ma, respectively. The sanukitoids are composed of meta-andesites and diorite porphyrites and characterized by relatively high MgO (3.94-5.62 wt%), Mg# (50-61), Cr (73-343 ppm), and Ni (37-111 ppm) values. The adakitic rocks are composed of granodioritegranite gneisses and have relatively high Sr (316-1001 ppm) and low Y (7-13 ppm) and Yb (0.83-1.37 ppm) contents, and relatively high Sr/Y (36-89) and La/Yb (16-45) ratios. Rocks from both suites exhibit depletions of Nb, Ta, and Ti and have similar Sr-Nd-Hf-Zn isotopes: variable (87Sr/86Sr)i (0.7002-0.7053), weakly positive eNd(t) (+0.3 to +1.7) and eHf(t) (+1.8 to +6.8), and slightly heavy d66Zn (0.30‰-0.36‰). These geochemical characteristics indicate that the sanukitoids were derived from the melting of subducted sediments followed by melt-mantle interaction, whereas the adakitic rocks were produced by direct partial melting of subducted plate (including tonalite-trondjhemite-granodiorite melts) under a garnet stability field with minor sediments. Such distinct magmatic rock associations, together with the coeval charnockites and tholeiites with diverse compositions in the adjacent area, can be best explained by a slab breakoff model. Further, events associated with slab breakoff are likely to represent a transition of a quasi-plate tectonic regime, characterized by multiple, continuous, and stagnant attempts to start the modern-style subduction on Earth. In addition, the emergence of sanukitoids and associated magmas symbolized the onset of supracrustal recycling into the mantle. Combined with the Nd-Hf-Zn isotopes of diverse magmatic rocks in the North China Craton that are comparable to other Precambrian magmatic rock suites worldwide, we suggest that supracrustal recycling symbolized the onset of plate tectonics since ca. 3.0 Ga, and by inference played a key role in the development of subduction-driven plate tectonics in addition to Earth's secular cooling. Global fore- and sub-arc peridotites show paradoxically highly melt-depleted yet silica- enriched (as excess orthopyroxene) compositions, which have been attributed to either silica-enriched mantle sources or metasomatic overprints by silica-rich fluids/melts. Here, we present robust mineralogical evidence from an ophiolitic peridotite suite and thermodynamic modeling suggesting that boninitic melt percolation is a viable manner to induce silica enrichment and keep the ultra-depleted signature in a nascent lithospheric mantle wedge. The co-occurrence of resorbed olivines and euhedral high-Cr# spinels with a boninitic origin enclosed by porphyroblastic orthopyroxenes in these peridotites documents that the primary olivines were partially melted or dissolved along with precipitation of the euhedral spinels and growth of the orthopyroxene through reactions between the depleted peridotites and boninitic melts. Such metasomatism modulates the geochemistry of mantle wedges and can explain the compositional variations observed in the majority of global fore- and sub-arc peridotites and supra–subduction zone ophiolitic counterparts. Lateral assembly of these mantle domains by accretionary orogenesis may contribute to the growth of continental lithosphere and accounts for the existence of melt-depleted yet silica-enriched mantle domains beneath orogens. The origin and evolution of the subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) underlying orogenic belts bordering cratons, as either newly added domains or strongly reworked older cratonic lithosphere, remains controversial. This limits our understanding of deep lithospheric behavior and processes during plate convergence. Here, we use detailed petrology, whole-rock and mineral compositions, and in-situ Sr isotopic compositions for spinel-facies peridotite xenoliths from Jiaohe (northeastern China) in the southeastern Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB), which is pinched between two NE-striking Mesozoic to Cenozoic giant trans-lithospheric fault systems. These data are combined with whole-rock Re-Os isotope and platinum-group element compositions and literature data, to explore the physicochemical evolution of the regional SCLM and examine crust-SCLM relationships for this vast swath of continental lithosphere. Lherzolites predominate at Jiaohe, and have higher whole-rock Al2O3 contents than harzburgites (2.27-3.46 wt% versus 0.84-1.02 wt%), but exhibit FeO enrichment similar to harzburgite (bulk FeO up to 9.54 wt%). The lherzolitic clinopyroxenes (Cpx) have higher heavy rare earth element (HREE) levels (2.79-5.11 ppm) and Ti/Eu (3882-6864), coupled with wider variation of 87Sr/86Sr (0.7021-0.7038) and lower average ƒO2 (oxygen fugacity relative to the fayalitemagnetite- quartz buffer; FMQ-1.92 ± 0.55) compared to the harzburgites (HREE: 0.94-2.11 ppm; Ti/Eu: 163-2044; 87Sr/86Sr: 0.7032-0.7036; ƒO2 = FMQ-1.25 ± 0.20). All these observations suggest that the lherzolites were produced by adding Cpx ± spinel to the protoliths from reducing silicate melts, whereas the harzburgites may have originated from a remnant, highly depleted mantle domain that variably interacted with silica-undersaturated oxidizing melts. Bulk-rock and mineral compositional relationships as well as ƒO2 for peridotite samples from the southeastern CAOB (including Jiaohe) are similar to those of the northeastern NCC (including Huinan). Their characteristics contrast with those from the northwestern CAOB, suggesting that they belong to distinct lithospheric provinces with respect to both composition and oxidation state. Jiaohe harzburgites yield Paleoproterozoic Re depletion Os model ages (TRD up to 1.76 Ga), similar to Huinan peridotites (up to 1.92 Ga), just 170 km away, and may also represent strongly reworked cratonic mantle. By analogy with evidence from recent continental collision zones, the Jiaohe SCLM may have originated as cratonic SCLM that migrated northeastward during plate convergence along giant translithospheric fault systems. Accretionary orogens function as major sites for the generation of continental crust, but the growth model of continental crust remains poorly constrained. The Central Asian Orogenic Belt, as one of the most important Phanerozoic accretionary orogens on Earth, has been the focus of debates regarding the proportion of juvenile crust present. Using published geochemical and zircon Hf-O isotopic data sets for three belts in the Eastern Tianshan terrane of the southern Central Asian Orogenic Belt, we first explore the variations in crustal thickness and isotopic composition in response to tectono-magmatic activity over time. Steady progression to radiogenic zircon Hf isotopic signatures associated with syn-collisional crustal thickening indicates enhanced input of mantle-derived material, which greatly contributes to the growth of the continental crust. Using the surface areas and relative increases in crustal thickness as the proxies for magma volumes, in conjunction with the calculated mantle fraction of the mixing flux, we then are able to determine that a volume of ~14-22% of juvenile crust formed in the southern Central Asian Orogenic Belt during the Phanerozoic. This study highlights the validity of using crustal thickness and zircon isotopic signatures of magmatic rocks to quantify the volume of juvenile crust in complex accretionary orogens. With reference to the crustal growth pattern in other accretionary orogens and the Nd-Hf isotopic record at the global scale, our work reconciles the rapid crustal growth in the accretionary orogens with its episodic generation pattern in the formation of global continental crust.
