Increasing waste generation has become a significant issue over the globe due to the rapid increase in urbanization and industrialization. In the literature, many issues that have a direct impact on the increase of waste and the improper disposal of waste have been investigated. Most of the existing work in the literature has focused on providing a cost-efficient solution for the monitoring of garbage collection system using the Internet of Things (IoT). Though an IoT-based solution provides the real-time monitoring of a garbage collection system, it is limited to control the spreading of overspill and bad odor blowout gasses. The poor and inadequate disposal of waste produces toxic gases, and radiation in the environment has adverse effects on human health, the greenhouse system, and global warming. While considering the importance of air pollutants, it is imperative to monitor and forecast the concentration of air pollutants in addition to the management of the waste. In this paper, we present and IoT-based smart bin using a machine and deep learning model to manage the disposal of garbage and to forecast the air pollutant present in the surrounding bin environment. The smart bin is connected to an IoT-based server, the Google Cloud Server (GCP), which performs the computation necessary for predicting the status of the bin and for forecasting air quality based on real-time data. We experimented with a traditional model (k-nearest neighbors algorithm (k-NN) and logistic reg) and a non-traditional (long short term memory (LSTM) network-based deep learning) algorithm for the creation of alert messages regarding bin status and forecasting the amount of air pollutant carbon monoxide (CO) present in the air at a specific instance. The recalls of logistic regression and k-NN algorithm is 79% and 83%, respectively, in a real-time testing environment for predicting the status of the bin. The accuracy of modified LSTM and simple LSTM models is 90% and 88%, respectively, to predict the future concentration of gases present in the air. The system resulted in a delay of 4 s in the creation and transmission of the alert message to a sanitary worker. The system provided the real-time monitoring of garbage levels along with notifications from the alert mechanism. The proposed works provide improved accuracy by utilizing machine learning as compared to existing solutions based on simple approaches.

Finding reliable and robust criteria for the detection of broken bars in induction motors is key for the maintenance of industrial engines, and some of the most efficient methods analyze the stator start-up current. Due to the transitory characteristics and short duration of the signal, suitable time-frequency mathematical tools are very useful for this purpose. We propose here algorithms based on the discrete wavelet and wavelet packet transform, combined with other tools in signal processing, to offer an accurate quantitative method for failure detection due to broken bars in induction motors. A good selection of the wavelet family is important for a good performance of the indicator, and the discrete approximation of the Meyer wavelet, ‘dmeyer’, consistently demonstrates the most favorable results. Our findings highlight the effectiveness of both the wavelet and wavelet packet transforms in accurately detecting broken bars in induction motors. This fact allows optimal monitoring strategies in industrial applications.

In the manufacturing industry, computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools are of great importance since the processes in which they are used allow the creation of elements used in multiple sectors. Likewise, the condition of the cutting tools used is paramount due to the effect they have on the process and the quality of the supplies produced. For decades, methodologies have been developed that employ various signals and sensors for wear detection, prediction and monitoring; however, this field is constantly evolving, with new technologies and methods that have allowed the development of non-invasive, efficient and robust systems. This paper proposes the use of magnetic stray flux and motor current signals from a CNC lathe and the analysis of images of machined parts for wear detection using online and offline information under the variation in cutting speed and tool feed rate. The information obtained is processed through statistical and non-statistical indicators and dimensionally reduced by linear discriminant analysis (LDA) and a feed-forward neural network (FFNN) for wear classification. The results obtained show a good performance in wear detection using the individual signals, achieving efficiencies of 77.5%, 73% and 89.78% for the analysis of images, current and stray flux signals, respectively, under the variation in cutting speed, and 76.34%, 73% and 63.12% for the analysis of images, current and stray flux signals, respectively, under the variation of feed rate. Significant improvements were observed when the signals are fused, increasing the efficiency up to 95% for the cutting speed variations and 82.84% for the feed rate variations, achieving a system that allows detecting the wear present in the tools according to the needs of the process (online/offline) under different machining parameters.

A vital component of electrical machines (EMs), which plays the most significant role in their reliable and proper operation, is their insulation system. Synchronous generators (SGs) are the most commonly used EMs in energy production and industry. Epoxy resin and mica are the predominant insulation materials for the SGs’ windings because their characteristics and properties are suitable for extending the lifetime of the insulation. Partial discharges (PDs) are both a symptom of insulation degradation, as they cause serious problems for insulation, and a means to identify possible insulation faults with offline and/or online PD tests and measurements. A comparison of three different equivalent circuit models of PDs occurring in different insulation materials (epoxy resin, mica, and a combination of these two) is presented in this paper. Different applied voltages and/or various geometries of voids are the factors investigated through simulations. The number of PDs, PD activity, and flashover voltages are examined in order to evaluate which of the aforementioned materials has the best reaction against PD activity.

Kinematic chains are ensembles of elements that integrate, among other components, with the induction motors, the mechanical couplings, and the loads to provide support to the industrial processes that require motion interchange. In this same line, the induction motor justifies its importance because this machine is the core that provides the power and generates the motion of the industrial process. However, also, it is possible to diagnose other types of faults that occur in other elements in the kinematic chain, which are reflected as problems in the motor operation. With this purpose, the coupling between the motor and the final load in the chain requires, in many situations, the use of a gearbox that balances the torque–velocity relationship. Thus, the gear wear in this component is addressed in many works, but the study of gradual wear has not been completely covered yet at different operating frequencies. Therefore, in this work, a methodology is proposed based on statistical features and genetic algorithms to find out those features that can best be used for detecting the gradual gear wear of a gearbox by using the signals, measured directly in the motor, from current and vibration sensors at different frequencies. The methodology also makes use of linear discriminant analysis to generate a bidimensional representation of the system conditions that are fed to a neural network with a simple structure for performing the classification of the condition. Four uniform gear wear conditions were tested, including the healthy state and three gradual conditions: 25%, 50%, and 75% wear in the gear teeth. Because of the sampling frequency, the number of sensors, the time for data acquisition, the different operation frequencies analyzed, and the computation of the different statistical features, meant that a large amount of data were generated that needed to be fused and reduced. Therefore, the proposed methodology provides an excellent generalized solution for data fusion and for minimizing the computational burden required. The obtained results demonstrate the effectiveness of fault gradualism detection for the proposed approach.

The electric machines are the elements most used at an industry level, and they represent the major power consumption of the productive processes. Particularly speaking, among all electric machines, the motors and their drives play a key role since they literally allow the motion interchange in the industrial processes; it could be said that they are the medullar column for moving the rest of the mechanical parts. Hence, their proper operation must be guaranteed in order to raise, as much as possible, their efficiency, and, as consequence, bring out the economic benefits. This review presents a general overview of the reported works that address the efficiency topic in motors and drives and in the power quality of the electric grid. This study speaks about the relationship existing between the motors and drives that induces electric disturbances into the grid, affecting its power quality, and also how these power disturbances present in the electrical network adversely affect, in turn, the motors and drives. In addition, the reported techniques that tackle the detection, classification, and mitigations of power quality disturbances are discussed. Additionally, several works are reviewed in order to present the panorama that show the evolution and advances in the techniques and tendencies in both senses: motors and drives affecting the power source quality and the power quality disturbances affecting the efficiency of motors and drives. A discussion of trends in techniques and future work about power quality analysis from the motors and drives efficiency viewpoint is provided. Finally, some prompts are made about alternative methods that could help in overcome the gaps until now detected in the reported approaches referring to the detection, classification and mitigation of power disturbances with views toward the improvement of the efficiency of motors and drives.

Bearings are the elements that allow the rotatory movement in induction motors, and the fault occurrence in these elements is due to excessive working conditions. In induction motors, electrical erosion remains the most common phenomenon that damages bearings, leading to incipient faults that gradually increase to irreparable damages. Thus, condition monitoring strategies capable of assessing bearing fault severities are mandatory to overcome this critical issue. The contribution of this work lies in the proposal of a condition monitoring strategy that is focused on the analysis and identification of different fault severities of the outer race bearing fault in an induction motor. The proposed approach is supported by fusion information of different physical magnitudes and the use of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. An important aspect of this proposal is the calculation of a hybrid-set of statistical features that are obtained to characterize vibration and stator current signals by its processing through domain analysis, i.e., time-domain and frequency-domain; also, the fusion of information of both signals by means of the Linear Discriminant Analysis is important due to the most discriminative and meaningful information is retained resulting in a high-performance condition characterization. Besides, a Neural Network-based classifier allows validating the effectiveness of fusion information from different physical magnitudes to face the diagnosis of multiple fault severities that appear in the bearing outer race. The method is validated under an experimental data set that includes information related to a healthy condition and five different severities that appear in the outer race of bearings.

The growing number of variable speed drives (VSDs) in industry has an impact on the future development of condition monitoring methods. In research, more and more attention is being paid to condition monitoring based on motor current evaluation. However, there are currently only a few contributions to current-based pump diagnosis. In this paper, two current-based methods for the detection of bearing defects, impeller clogging, and cracked impellers are presented. The first approach, load point-dependent fault indicator analysis (LoPoFIA), is an approach that was derived from motor current signature analysis (MCSA). Compared to MCSA, the novelty of LoPoFIA is that only amplitudes at typical fault frequencies in the current spectrum are considered as a function of the hydraulic load point. The second approach is advanced transient current signature analysis (ATCSA), which represents a time-frequency analysis of a current signal during start-up. According to the literature, ATCSA is mainly used for motor diagnosis. As a test item, a VSD-driven circulation pump was measured in a pump test bench. Compared to MCSA, both LoPoFIA and ATCSA showed improvements in terms of minimizing false alarms. However, LoPoFIA simplifies the separation of bearing defects and impeller defects, as impeller defects especially influence higher flow ranges. Compared to LoPoFIA, ATCSA represents a more efficient method in terms of minimizing measurement effort. In summary, both LoPoFIA and ATCSA provide important insights into the behavior of faulty pumps and can be advantageous compared to MCSA in terms of false alarms and fault separation.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene are extensively studied materials in the field of sensing technology and other electronic devices due to their better functional and structural properties. Additionally, more attention is given to utilize these materials as a filler to reinforce the properties of other materials. However, the role of weight percentage of CNTs in the piezoresistive properties of these materials has not been reported yet. In this work, CNT-graphene composite-based piezoresistive pressure samples in the form of pellets with different weight percentages of CNTs were fabricated and characterized. All the samples exhibit a decrease in the direct current (DC) resistance with the increase in external uniaxial applied pressure from 0 to 74.8 kNm−2. However, under the same external uniaxial applied pressure, the DC resistance exhibit more decrease as the weight percentage of the CNTs increase in the composites.

Pumps have a wide range of applications. Methods for fault detection of motors are increasingly being used for pumps. In the context of this paper, a test bench is built to investigate circulation pumps for faults. As a use case, the fault of impeller clogging was first measured and then examined with the help of motor current signature analysis. It can be seen that there are four frequencies at which there is an increase in amplitude in case of a fault. The sidebands around the supply frequency are in particular focus. The clogging of three and four of a total of seven channels leads to the highest amplitudes at the fault frequencies. The efficiency is reduced by 9 to 15% in case of faulty operation. These results indicate that the implementation of fault detection algorithms on the pump electronics represents added value for the pump operator. Furthermore, the results can be transferred to other applications.

We apply power spectral analysis based on covariance function and spectral subtraction to detect adjacent and non-adjacent bar breakages. We obtain a spectral pattern when the signal presents one or various broken bars, independent of the relative position of the bar breakages. The proposed algorithm gives satisfactory results for detectability compared to some previous research. Additionally, we also present illustrations of faults and signal to noise in the noise-reduction stage.

Induction motors (IMs) are essential components in industrial applications. These motors have to perform numerous tasks under a wide variety of conditions, which affects performance and reliability and gradually brings faults and efficiency losses over time. Nowadays, the industrial sector demands the necessary integration of smart-sensors to effectively diagnose faults in these kinds of motors before faults can occur. One of the most frequent causes of failure in IMs is the degradation of turn insulation in windings. If this anomaly is present, an electric motor can keep working with apparent normality, but factors such as the efficiency of energy consumption and mechanical reliability may be reduced considerably. Furthermore, if not detected at an early stage, this degradation could lead to the breakdown of the insulation system, which could in turn cause catastrophic and irreversible failure to the electrical machine. This paper proposes a novel methodology and its application in a smart-sensor to detect and estimate the healthiness of the winding insulation in IMs. This methodology relies on the analysis of the external magnetic field captured by a coil sensor by applying suitable time-frequency decomposition (TFD) tools. The discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is used to decompose the signal into different approximation and detail coefficients as a pre-processing stage to isolate the studied fault. Then, due to the importance of diagnosing stator winding insulation faults during motor operation at an early stage, this proposal introduces an indicator based on wavelet entropy (WE), a single parameter capable of performing an efficient diagnosis. A smart-sensor is able to estimate winding insulation degradation in IMs using two inexpensive, reliable, and noninvasive primary sensors: a coil sensor and an E-type thermocouple sensor. The utility of these sensors is demonstrated through the results obtained from analyzing six similar IMs with differently induced severity faults.

The aim of this work is to find out, through the analysis of the time and frequency domains, significant differences that lead us to obtain one or several variables that may result in an indicator that allows diagnosing the condition of the rotor in an induction motor from the processing of the stray flux signals. For this, the calculation of two indicators is proposed: the first is based on the frequency domain and it relies on the calculation of the sum of the mean value of the bispectrum of the flux signal. The use of high order spectral analysis is justified in that with the one-dimensional analysis resulting from the Fourier Transform, there may not always be solid differences at the spectral level that enable us to distinguish between healthy and faulty conditions. Also, based on the high-order spectral analysis, differences may arise that, with the classical analysis with the Fourier Transform, are not evident, since the high order spectra from the Bispectrum are immune to Gaussian noise, but not the results that can be obtained using the one-dimensional Fourier transform. On the other hand, a second indicator based on the temporal domain that is based on the calculation of the square value of the median of the autocovariance function of the signal is evaluated. The obtained results are satisfactory and let us conclude the affirmative hypothesis of using flux signals for determining the condition of the rotor of an induction motor.
