Abstract PET and SPECT studies in treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS) have revealed significant alterations in regional cerebral blood flow (CBF) during clozapine treatment, which may vary according to the clinical response. Here, we used the more recent MRI approach of arterial spin labelling (ASL) to evaluate regional CBF in participants with TRS (N = 36) before starting treatment with clozapine compared to in healthy volunteers (N = 16). We then compared CBF in the TRS group, before and after 12 weeks of treatment with clozapine (N = 24); and examined the relationship of those differences against changes in Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale for Schizophrenia (PANSS) scores over the treatment period. Damage to buried gas pipelines caused by mining activities has been frequently reported. Based on a case study from the Central China coal mining area, this research employs a scaled model experiment to investigate the movement of overlying strata in a room-and-pillar mining goaf. Distributed optical fiber strain sensors and thin-film pressure sensors were used to simultaneously measure the stress variations in the pipeline and changes in the soil pressure surrounding it. As the mining recovery rate increased from 50% to 86%, the maximum displacement of the overburden sharply escalated from 33.55 mm to 79.19 mm. During surface subsidence, separation between the pipeline and surrounding soil was observed, leading to the formation of a soil-arching effect. The development of the soil-arching effect increased soil pressure on the top of the pipeline, while soil pressure at the bottom of the pipeline increased on the outer side of the subsidence area and decreased on the inner side. Three critical sections of the pipeline were identified, with the maximum stress reaching 1908.41 kPa. After the completion of mining activities, pipeline collapse occurred, leading to a weakening of the soil-arching effect. Consequently, both stress concentration in the pipeline and soil pressure decreased. The probability integral method was corrected by incorporating the fracture angle, which enabled the determination of the location of maximum surface subsidence curvature, found to be close to the three failure sections of the pipeline.

Abstract There is an urgent need to develop optimal solutions for deformation control of deep high‐stress roadways, one of the critical problems in underground engineering. The previously proposed four‐dimensional support (hereinafter 4D support), as a new support technology, can set the roadway surrounding rock under three‐dimensional pressure in the new balanced structure, and prevent instability of surrounding rock in underground engineering. However, the influence of roadway depth and creep deformation on the surrounding rock supported by 4D support is still unknown. This study investigated the influence of roadway depth and creep deformation time on the instability of surrounding rock by analyzing the energy development. The elastic strain energy was analyzed using the program redeveloped in FLAC3D. The numerical simulation results indicate that the combined support mode of 4D roof supports and conventional side supports is highly applicable to the stability control of surrounding rock with a roadway depth exceeding 520 m. With the increase of roadway depth, 4D support can effectively restrain the area and depth of plastic deformation in the surrounding rock. Further, 4D support limits the accumulation range and rate of elastic strain energy as the creep deformation time increases. 4D support can effectively reduce the plastic deformation of roadway surrounding rock and maintain the stability for a long deformation period of 6 months. As confirmed by in situ monitoring results, 4D support is more effective for the long‐term stability control of surrounding rock than conventional support.

IntroductionAutism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a multifaceted developmental condition that commonly appears during early childhood. The etiology of ASD remains multifactorial and not yet fully understood. The identification of biomarkers may provide insights into the underlying mechanisms and pathophysiology of the disorder. The present study aimed to explore the causes of ASD by investigating the key biomedical markers, trace elements, and microbiota factors between children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and control subjects.MethodsMedline, PubMed, ProQuest, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, PsycINFO, Web of Science, and EMBSCO databases have been searched for publications from 2012 to 2023 with no language restrictions using the population, intervention, control, and outcome (PICO) approach. Keywords including “autism spectrum disorder,” “oxytocin,” “GABA,” “Serotonin,” “CRP,” “IL-6,” “Fe,” “Zn,” “Cu,” and “gut microbiota” were used for the search. The Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) critical appraisal checklist was used to assess the article quality, and a random model was used to assess the mean difference and standardized difference between ASD and the control group in all biomedical markers, trace elements, and microbiota factors.ResultsFrom 76,217 records, 43 studies met the inclusion and exclusion criteria and were included in this meta-analysis. The pooled analyses showed that children with ASD had significantly lower levels of oxytocin (mean differences, MD = −45.691, 95% confidence interval, CI: −61.667, −29.717), iron (MD = −3.203, 95% CI: −4.891, −1.514), and zinc (MD = −6.707, 95% CI: −12.691, −0.722), lower relative abundance of Bifidobacterium (MD = −1.321, 95% CI: −2.403, −0.238) and Parabacteroides (MD = −0.081, 95% CI: −0.148, −0.013), higher levels of c-reactive protein, CRP (MD = 0.401, 95% CI: 0.036, 0.772), and GABA (MD = 0.115, 95% CI: 0.045, 0.186), and higher relative abundance of Bacteroides (MD = 1.386, 95% CI: 0.717, 2.055) and Clostridium (MD = 0.281, 95% CI: 0.035, 0.526) when compared with controls. The results of the overall analyses were stable after performing the sensitivity analyses. Additionally, no substantial publication bias was observed among the studies.InterpretationChildren with ASD have significantly higher levels of CRP and GABA, lower levels of oxytocin, iron, and zinc, lower relative abundance of Bifidobacterium and Parabacteroides, and higher relative abundance of Faecalibacterium, Bacteroides, and Clostridium when compared with controls. These results suggest that these indicators may be a potential biomarker panel for the diagnosis or determining therapeutic targets of ASD. Furthermore, large, sample-based, and randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm these results.

The water conservation service of an ecosystem reflects the sustainability of regional water resources and is significant to human survival and sustainable development. However, global climate warming and intensified human activities pose substantial challenges to regional water conservation services, especially in an alpine region with a fragile ecological environment, which is more sensitive to climate factors and land use pattern changes. In this study, the Qilian Mountains (QLM) region was chosen as the study area to investigate water conservation trends and drivers in an alpine region. The InVEST model was used to estimate water conservation in the QLM from 2000 to 2020. In addition, the characteristics of the spatiotemporal variation in the water conservation were analyzed using a combination of the Theil–Sen median trend and Mann–Kendall method, coefficient of variation, and Hurst exponent, and the main driving factors affecting these changes were determined using partial correlation analysis and contribution analysis. The main conclusions are as follows: (1) The predicted water conservation in the QLM based on the InVEST model’s water yield module had a relative inaccuracy of 5.96%, and the mean water conservation in the QLM from 2000 to 2020 was approximately 78.08 × 108 m3. (2) The water conservation showed a slight increase over the whole QLM region, with a change rate of 0.565 mm/a; yet, it showed a distinct spatial distribution pattern characterized by “more in the east than in the west”. (3) The contribution of the various land use categories to the total water conservation, from highest to lowest, was according to the following: grassland (62.44%) > unutilized land (15.99%) > forest (11.44%) > cultivated land (9.86%) > construction land (0.45%) > water (0.03%). (4) Precipitation exhibited a significant positive correlation, with contribution ratios of approximately 58.50% to the variation in the water content, whereas potential evapotranspiration and surface temperature showed a nonsignificant negative correlation with contribution ratios of approximately 2.17% and 2.08%, respectively. The results can provide scientific reference for ecological protection in the QLM and other similar alpine environment areas.

Strain-based condition evaluation has garnered as a crucial method for the structural health monitoring (SHM) of large-scale engineering structures. The use of traditional wired strain sensors becomes tedious and time-consuming due to their complex wiring operation, more workload, and instrumentation cost to collect sufficient data for condition state evaluation, especially for large-scale engineering structures. The advent of wireless and passive RFID technologies with high efficiency and inexpensive hardware equipment has brought a new era of next-generation intelligent strain monitoring systems for engineering structures. Thus, this study systematically summarizes the recent research progress of cutting-edge RFID strain sensing technologies. Firstly, this study introduces the importance of structural health monitoring and strain sensing. Then, RFID technology is demonstrated including RFID technology’s basic working principle and system component composition. Further, the design and application of various kinds of RFID strain sensors in SHM are presented including passive RFID strain sensing technology, active RFID strain sensing technology, semi-passive RFID strain sensing technology, Ultra High-frequency RFID strain sensing technology, chipless RFID strain sensing technology, and wireless strain sensing based on multi-sensory RFID system, etc., expounding their advantages, disadvantages, and application status. To the authors’ knowledge, the study initially provides a systematic comprehensive review of a suite of RFID strain sensing technology that has been developed in recent years within the context of structural health monitoring.

BackgroundFNDC5 is a novel and important player in energy regulation related to glucose metabolism and insulin levels. Thus, it may affect the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Nevertheless, the association between FNDC5 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and susceptibility to T2DM remains unclear. The aim of this meta-analysis was to explore whether the SNPs, rs3480 and rs16835198, are associated with the risk of T2DM.MethodsStudies published before February 1st, 2022 were screened to identify the included studies. R software was also applied for calculation of odds ratio (OR), 95% confidence interval (95% CI), heterogeneity, and sensitivity analysis.ResultsSeven studies for rs3480 (involving 5475 patients with T2DM and 4855 healthy controls) and five studies for rs16835198 (involving 4217 patients with T2DM and 4019 healthy controls) were included in this meta-analysis. The results revealed a statistically significant association of rs3480 with T2DM under homozygote (GG vs AA: OR = 1.76, 95% CI = 1.31–2.37, P = 0.0002, I2 = 59%) genetic model. However, there was no statistically significant correlation between rs16835198 and susceptibility to T2DM under allelic (G vs T: OR = 1.33, 95% CI = 0.94–1.89, P = 0.11, I2 = 84%), heterozygote (GT vs TT: OR = 1.17, 95% CI = 0.80–1.69, P = 0.42, I2 = 71%), homozygote (GG vs TT: OR = 1.35, 95% CI = 0.95–1.94, P = 0.10, I2 = 62%), recessive (GG+GT vs TT: OR = 1.25, 95% CI = 0.88–1.79, P = 0.22, I2 = 72%), and dominant (GG vs GT+GG: OR = 1.20, 95% CI = 0.96–1.50, P = 0.11, I2 = 46%) genetic models.ConclusionsThe present meta-analysis revealed that rs3480 in FNDC5 is significantly associated with susceptibility to T2DM, while rs16835198 does not show such an association.

Background Schizophrenia is a serious mental illness affecting approximately 20 million individuals globally. Both genetic and environmental factors contribute to the illness. If left undiagnosed and untreated, schizophrenia results in impaired social function, repeated hospital admissions, reduced quality of life and decreased life expectancy. Clinical diagnosis largely relies on subjective evidence, including self-reported experiences, and reported behavioural abnormalities followed by psychiatric evaluation. In addition, psychoses may occur along with other conditions, and the symptoms are often episodic and transient, posing a significant challenge to the precision of diagnosis. Therefore, objective, specific tests using biomarkers are urgently needed for differential diagnosis of schizophrenia in clinical practice.Aims We aimed to provide evidence-based and consensus-based recommendations, with a summary of laboratory measurements that could potentially be used as biomarkers for schizophrenia, and to discuss directions for future research.Methods We searched publications within the last 10 years with the following keywords: ‘schizophrenia’, ‘gene’, ‘inflammation’, ‘neurotransmitter’, ‘protein marker’, ‘gut microbiota’, ‘pharmacogenomics’ and ‘biomarker’. A draft of the consensus was discussed and agreed on by all authors at a round table session.Results We summarised the characteristics of candidate diagnostic markers for schizophrenia, including genetic, inflammatory, neurotransmitter, peripheral protein, pharmacogenomic and gut microbiota markers. We also proposed a novel laboratory process for diagnosing schizophrenia in clinical practice based on the evidence summarised in this paper.Conclusions Further efforts are needed to identify schizophrenia-specific genetic and epigenetic markers for precise diagnosis, differential diagnosis and ethnicity-specific markers for the Chinese population. The development of novel laboratory techniques is making it possible to use these biomarkers clinically to diagnose disease.

The present work numerically investigates the flow behavior of Newtonian fluid between rotating disk systems. Rotating disk flow is an embranchment of fundamental flow research, which forms the theoretical basis for the flow media in many disk-type hydraulic machinery, and has been widely applied in energy, aerospace, vehicles, medical, and chemical areas. The Reynolds equation model of the rotating disk flow is established based on a series of assumptions, and considers the characteristics of hexahedral surface textures on the friction disk, and the control equation is dimensionless. The velocity, pressure, and pressure coefficient in oil film are solved by finite difference algorithm, and the shear cavitation incipient position is predicted. Graphical visualization and numerical data about cavitation characteristics are also presented. Furthermore, the cavitation process is researched in CFX and the experiment, eventually verifying the correctness of the numerical analysis. The pressure perturbation caused by texture boundaries and the low pressure at the vortex center induce the initial generation of cavitation, and cavitation effect can obviously enhance lubricating performance. The cavitation region extends from micro-dimples towards non-textured region when texture rate increases. This study can guide design of surface structures such as mechanical seals, wet clutches, and disk turbines.

Cavitation is a destructive hydraulic phenomenon; it causes damage to small hydraulic machinery and large water-conservancy projects, and cavitation and cavitation corrosion problems are long-standing problems for hydraulic machinery experts. Micro-textures are often machined onto the end face near the indirect contact point to increase the oil film bearing capacity and reduce the transfer torque in hydraulic machinery, but the pressure disturbance caused by the texture dimple and boundary can induce cavitation. To delay or eliminate cavitation on the textured surface of equipment such as mechanical seals and dynamic bearings, the cavitation effect of a cylindrical texture on a rotating frictional pair was investigated from theoretical, imitational, and experimental perspectives. Low pressure is extremely important for inducing cavitation; once cavitation conditions are met, a full bubble can be formed in about 0.015 s. Cavitation mainly occurs at the outer radius of the rotating end face, i.e., in the high-speed region. There is a mutual mass transfer between gas and liquid phases when cavitation occurs, but the generation of cavitation bubbles is faster than its collapse, thus causing an increasing cavitation region.

A non-direct contact rotary interface uses a viscous fluid as the lubricant working medium. Because the oil film friction coefficient formed is extremely small, so it has great application potential in sealing, fluid transmission, thermosolutal convection, and bionics. Research on mechanical seals, wet clutches, and dynamic load bearing have proven that micro-textures can effectively improve friction and lubrication performance. However, when the fluid flows through the texture boundary, pressure disturbances can induce hydrodynamic cavitation. A pair of rotating disks are selected as our research objects. From the simulation and experiment research, we found that cavitation volume does not always increase with an increase in the texture rate, and cavitation always occurs preferentially at the outer diameter, so it is necessary to avoid machining the texture structure at the outer diameter of the mechanical seal end. Once the conditions for cavitation are met, a complete cavity is formed in approximately 0.015 s. The study also verifies that the cavitation gas originates from the phase change of the oil.

The extensive application of natural unbound granular materials (UGMs) motivates studies into the mechanical properties of alternatives such as processed crushed rocks employed commonly as base or subbase layers. The rutting and settlement generated in base and subbase layers is widely restricted in many specifications and standards. In this research, the dynamic behavior including the resilient modulus (Mr) and the plastic strain (εεp) of the crushed rocks collected from Queensland in Australia will be tested by a series of repeated load triaxial test (RLT) tests to investigate the behavior of UGMs under the fluctuation of the degree of saturation (DOS) (59%–100%). In particular, the RLT specimens were prepared in the laboratory through proper gradation under optimum moisture content (OMC) and 100% standard proctor maximum dry unit weight. Results from the RLT tests showed that UGM specimens soaked at higher DOS generated lower resilient modulus and weaker resistance to heavy traffic volumes with significant accumulation of plastic strain. The Mr and εεp of the tested aggregates under different cyclic deviator stresses of 425 kPa and 625 kPa approximately linearly decreased and approximately linearly increased as the DOS increased with a certain number of cycles up to 50,000, respectively.
