Circadian disturbances are known to affect lipid metabolism. Most of the phospholipid metabolites have been shown to be under circaian control by metabolomics studies. Moreover, genes related to glycerolipid synthesis were reported to be circadianly regulated. Data from various studies revealed a relationship between glycerolipid metabolism and circadian misalignments. Some proteins responsible for transfer of phospholipids among plasma lipoproteins or membranes include phospholipid transfer proteins (PLTP), lecithin cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT), secretory phospholipase A2 (sPLA2), endothelial lipase (EL), exhibits circadian oscillation. However no data are available as to whether circadian disturbances can influence phospholipid trafficking among HDL, erythrocytes and serum. To this end,, four conditions associated with circadian disturbances including type 2 diabetes, prediabetes with metformin usage, psoriasis and night-shift work were investigated for phospholipid trafficking. Indices of circadian misalignments, plasma melatonin and cortisol levels, were determined by ELISA and chemiluminescence methods respectively. Serum levels of PLTP, LCAT, EL and sPLA2 levels were analyzed by ELISA. Phospholipid compositions were investigated by two-dimensional HPTLC and/or HPLC. Results by HPLC indicated that PE/PC ratios in erythrocyte lysates of diabetes and metformin groups were found to be significantly lower compared to that of controls which might be associated with the lower levels of LCAT, EL and PLTP levels measured. Altered plasma melatonin levels indicated circadian misalignments in these conditions. However, in psoriasis and night-shift groups, circadian indexes did not match with the PE/PC ratios in erythrocytes as it was in diabetes and metformin groups. Objective: Many factors affect breastfeeding rates. One of these factors is the mother's perception of insufficient milk. This study was conducted to determine the factors affecting lactating women's perceptions of having insufficient milk and the foods they used to increase the breast milk. Methods: This descriptive study was conducted with 356 women. The data were collected using the "sociodemographic information form", the "form for determining the foods used by women to increase breast milk", and "perceived insufficient milk supply (PIMS)" scale. One-way analysis of variance, the independent samples t-test, the Bonferroni test, and Pearson correlation analysis were applied in the evaluation of the data. Results: The mean PIMS score was 42.39±7.48, and 80.3% of the women perceived their milk to be sufficient. A significant relationship was found between the mean PIMS score of the participants and employment status (p<0.000), time of first breastfeeding (p<0.000), milk being produced immediately after birth (p<0.000), and having enough milk to meet the needs of the baby (p<0.000). It was found that women consumed it and found it beneficial for increasing breast milk by consuming herbs: 30.6% used fennel, 12.6% linden; beverages: 71.3% used water, 50.6% compote, and 28.7% soups; foods: 31.2% used bulgur wheat, 24.2% fruit. Conclusion: It was observed that most mothers perceived their milk supply as sufficient. It was determined that PIMS score was affected by working status, time of milk coming in after birth, and breastfeeding status immediately after birth. It was determined that mothers consumed the most fennel, linden, parsley, water, compote, soup, fruit juice, bulgur pilaf, fruit, raisins, green vegetables and molasses to increase their milk supply. To compare the effects of nulliparous pregnant women listening to lullabies and self-selected music on reducing the anxiety and antenatal stress. This was a randomized controlled study. Lullaby group (LG) (n = 40) listened to the lullaby chosen by the researcher, mixed music group (MG) (n = 40) listened to self-selected music and control group (CG) (n = 40) received general care. Post-test anxiety and stress levels was lower in two intervention groups versus CG (p < 0.01). Post-test anxiety was lower in the MG versus LG (p < 0.01), however post-test stress levels were similar. Purpose: This study aims to examine the moderating role of formalization in the relationship between human resources (HR) practices and work engagement (WE) in aviation industry employees. The research revealed the moderator role of formalization, which is still one of the most critical components for aviation industry workers. Design/methodology/approach: In the study, the authors used the survey method. In this explanatory and cross-sectional study, the authors examined a data set collected from aviation industry employees (n = 226) in Turkey using the partial least squares (PLS) method and tried to moderate the formalization. The authors analyzed the moderator role of formalization in the relationship between HR practices and WE with SmartPLS 3.0 and HAYES Process Macro. Findings: The results of the study explain the effect of HR practices on WE in the context of social exchange theory through formalization. Findings show that formalization is an essential factor in HR practices' resulting in higher WE. Research limitations/implications: The study is cross-sectional. Research participants participated in the study voluntarily. This situation, in turn, may lead to a social desirability bias in participants' self-reported responses. To avoid this, the authors have prepared a standardized measurement tool. Again, since the authors do not request the names and institutions of the participants, confidentiality and anonymity are provided. Practical implications: Research findings offer implications for companies and employees in developing economies, especially in the aviation sector. It refers to the necessity for companies aiming for a sustainable strategic position in the competitive aviation sector to attach importance to HR practices that will enable them to see their employees as a competitive advantage. In addition, the results emphasize the need for aviation industry companies to adopt an approach that considers both practices that can increase WE and formalization procedures that can affect employee behavior. Originality/value: This research provides a comprehensive understanding to examine the interrelationships between HR, formalization and WE in the context of the mechanism of social change in the context of aviation industry workers. To the best of the authors' knowledge, no other researcher has holistically addressed these links in general, particularly in a developing country. Objective: To evaluate the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) and ganglion cell--inner plexiform layer thickness (GC--IPL) in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) by sector and quadrant. Materials and Methods: Seventy-eight eyes of 39 patients with MS and 82 eyes of 41 healthy participants were analyzed using spectral domain optical coherence tomography. Our study defined MS eyes with optic neuritis (ON) as MS ON eyes and those without ON as MS non-ON eyes. Comparisons of the GC-- IPL and pRNFL thicknesses were assessed and the measurements compared with healthy controls (HCs). Results: The comparison of the average and three quadrants (superior, inferior, and temporal) measurements of the pRNFL thickness and the average and six quadrant measurements of the GC--IPL thickness between the MS ON eyes and the MS non-ON eyes revealed statistically significant differences (P < 0.05). The average and four quadrants thickness of pRNFL and the average and six quadrants thickness of GC--IPL were significantly reduced in a comparison of MS ON vs. HC with MS non-ON vs. HC eyes (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The evaluation of pRNFL and GC--IPL thicknesses in MS ON and MS non-ON eyes may be beneficial in determining the central nervous system axonal integrity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context • Pregnant women may experience distress as a result of physical and psychosocial changes, and this distress affects the development of maternal attachment negatively. During pregnancy care and follow-up, reducing women’s pregnancy-related distress and improving maternal attachment are important. Objective • To compare the effects of listening to lullabies and self-selected music in reducing distress and increasing maternal attachment in pregnant women. Design • This study is a randomized controlled trial. It was conducted using power analysis for a type-I error rate of α = 0.05, type-II error rate of β = 0.20, representative power of 0.64, and effect size of 0.81. Setting • The study took place at a secondary care hospital in a provincial center in Turkey. Participants • The participants were 120 pregnant women who came to the outpatient clinic for pregnancy followups between June 2021 and October 2021. Intervention • The participants were allocated to one of three groups, with 40 women in each. For 30 minutes every day, for two weeks, the lullaby group (LG) only listened to lullaby records at home, and the multi-music group (MG) listened to self-selected music from different records; the control group (CG) did not listen to any music. Outcome Measures • The Prenatal Distress Questionnaire and the Maternal Antenatal Attachment Scale were used to collect data. Results • Prenatal distress levels were lower in the intervention groups than in the CG (P < .01), and they were lower in the MG than in the LG (P<.05). Antenatal attachment levels were higher in the intervention groups than in the CG (P < .01), and they were higher in the LG than in the MG (P<.05). Conclusions • For pregnant women, listening to self-selected music was more effective in reducing distress, whereas listening to lullabies selected by the researcher was more effective in increasing attachment. Cadmium (Cd) is the industrial and environmental toxic heavy metal which is found in air, water and soil. Cd, adversely affects many organs in humans such as kidney, intestine, liver, testis and lungs. L-carnitine (LC) is an important agent that plays essential role in energy metabolism. In our study, we aimed to work out whether LC application has any protective effect on intestinal contractility and morphologic damage of prepubertal rat duodenum on Cd-induced toxicity. Twenty eight prepubertal female Wistar rats were divided into four groups. The first group is control (C), second group; Cd group; Cadmium chloride was given 2 mg/kg 28 days with a one-day break by i.p. The third group; Cd+LC, which cadmium chloride was given 2 mg/kg i.p. and LC was given orally by gastric lavage. The LC dose was given as 75 mg/kg. The fourth group; LC, which only LC was given orally. The intestinal segments were isolated and suspended in tissue bath. Contractile responses were induced by acetylcholine (ACh) and relaxation was achieved with phenylephrine. Also the segments were examined for histological changes by light microscopy. Ach-induced contractions were higher in Cd+LC, LC, and control group compared to the Cd group in duodenal segments. The phenylephrine-induced relaxations were lower in Cd groups as compared with Control, Cd+LC and LC group in duodenal segments. In Cd group intestinal morphology was observed to be severely damaged whereas in Cd+LC group the damage was noticeably lower. Cd administration caused severe cellular damage and decreased gastrointestinal motility. Treatment with the LC has affected the gastrointestinal contractility and reduced the damage in intestinal morphology, which occured after Cd application. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: In recent years, with the development of laboratory methods, the frequency of nontuberculosis mycobacteria (NTM) infections has increased. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical significance of therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) growths in respiratory samples, and the secondary aim was to evaluate the treatment regimens and treatment outcomes of treatment for TDM disease. Methods: This study was a retrospective cohort study. Persons with NTM growth in respiratory samples admitted to the reference hospital between 2009 and 2020 were included in this study. Samples detected as NTM by the immunochromatographic rapid diagnostic test, those requested by the clinicians, species were determined by the hsp65PCRREA method. The subjects were classified into 3 groups: patients with NTM infection who received treatment (135, 12.7%), those followed up without treatment (690, 65.1%), and a last group of patients with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB) complex strains were isolated and received TB treatment (236, 22.2%). Initiating NTM treatment was decided in accordance with the American Thoracic Society recommendations. Results: The mean ± standard deviation age of patients was 53.8 ± 16.5 years, and 749 (70.6%) were male. In total, 278 (26.2%) out of 1061 cases had identified, and the most frequent species were MAC (81; Mycobacterium avium: 39, Mycobacterium intracellulare: 39, and MAC: 3), Mycobacterium abscessus (67), Mycobacterium kansasii (48), Mycobacterium fortuitum (23), Mycobacterium chelonae (12), Mycobacterium gordonae (11), and Mycobacterium szulgai (11). In the NTM treatment group, 116 (85.9%) of 135 patients had multiple culture positivity. Previous TB treatment history had 51 (37.8%) of 135 patients, respiratory comorbidities were evident in 37 (27.4%) of 135 patients. Thorax computed tomography imaging in 84 patients revealed nodule 38 (45.2%), consolidation 46 (54.8%), cavity 52 (61.9%), and bronchiectasis 27 (32.1%). Treatment results in the NTM treatment group were as follows: ongoing treatment 14 (10.4%), cure 64 (47.4%), default 33 (24.4%), exitus 19 (14.1%), recurrence 3 (2.2%), and refractory disease 2 (1.5%). Conclusion: This is a large case series evaluating the clinical significance of NTM growths and NTM treatment in Turkey. The clinical significance of NTM growth in respiratory samples is low. Treatment success rates of NTM patients who are treated are low. Treatment defaults and mortality rates are high. New drugs and new regimens are needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

INTRODUCTION During the pandemic, mental problems such as depression, anxiety, and stress may increase death anxiety. Thus, this study aims to examine women's levels of depression, anxiety, stress, and death anxiety, and to investigate the correlation between them, during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS This descriptive-correlational study was conducted on 665 women using an online survey in Turkey. The research sample was determined by applying convenience sampling and snowball methods according to the principle of accessibility-availability. RESULTS The mean Death Anxiety Scale score of the participants was 8.97±3.35, and the mean scores of depression, anxiety, stress and total Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS) were 5.23±3.93, 3.47±2.93, 5.99±3.74 and 14.69±9.51, respectively. A significant relationship was found between the women's death anxiety and their depression, anxiety, and stress levels. These findings indicate that the women had moderate death anxiety, mild depression, everyday anxiety, and stress levels. With the pandemic, death anxiety increased in women, especially those with chronic diseases and a history of medical or psychiatric illnesses. CONCLUSIONS The results of the study show that there was a significant positive correlation between the stress, depression, and anxiety levels of the women and their death anxiety. Infertility is a global problem that closely concerns people of reproductive age. Infertility has many negative effects on the lives of individuals, especially women who are more exposed to violence. The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between the perceptions of domestic violence against women and the sexual functions of women who apply to a clinic for fertility treatment. This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with 150 infertile women who applied to the clinic of a university hospital in northern Turkey between August 2018 and February 2019. The data were collected face-to-face using the descriptive information form, the Female Sexual Function Index and domestic-violence-against-women forms. The frequency, percentage, Pearson's product--moment correlation analysis, linear regression analysis, the Mann Whitney U test, and Cronbach's alpha methods were used in the analysis of the data. It was found that 54 per cent of the participants had a high school or higher education, 62 per cent of the participants did not work in an income-generating job, the participants were married for an average of 6.08 ± 3.99 years, and the mean age of the participants was 30.69 ± 6.13. The mean score of the domestic violence scale was 65.79 ± 11.16, and the mean score of the sexual function index was determined as 25.24 ± 5.47. Correlation values between domestic violence and sexual function index scores were found to be inversely significant (p < 0.05). The research indicates that infertile women who are exposed to violence experience more sexual dysfunction. It also indicates that women who are not satisfied with their sex life are more exposed to sexual violence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The concept of education can be simply defined as the process of bringing about behavioral changes for individuals. Far beyond the mentioned individual development, it is among the most important factors that contribute to social development and progress. For this reason, the importance of education for countries enhances day by day; as a result of this, many countries try to increase the national resources allocated for education. Although it is defined as a semi-public service, almost all of these resources are still covered by public budgets in almost every part of the world. This necessitates the expenditures and investments in education to be carried out based on correct planning. The importance of being able to invest strategically becomes more prominent for the countries. In particular, the importance of access to strategic execution of this investment for countries like Turkey, with an increasing number of individuals benefiting from education due to the potential of the young population, stands out even more. For this planning to be carried out systematically and correctly by countries, accurate, complete and reliable training data is needed. By analyzing these data, it is ensured that desired national targets and the education reaches become operational. Nowadays these data in Turkey and many countries by the ministries responsible for education have become an annual publication. In this study, the mentioned data of Turkey have been tried to be examined and interpreted in terms of different indicators. The data obtained in the study, which was conducted according to the scanning model, was examined according to the document analysis technique. Primary and secondary education levels within the scope of compulsory education have been discussed and besides the budget and education investments allocated to education, indicators related to education potential (number of schooling, student numbers per class, number of teachers according to education levels, etc.) have been examined. To make an international comparison, the data of Singapore, which has shown high-level success in exams such as TIMMS, PISA, PIRLS (including 2018 PISA) has been also examined and interpreted. In the study, it has been concluded that Turkey has some education indicators that are open for improvement and its education expenditures are not yet at the desired level.
