This paper investigated dynamic responses of steel monorail bridges incorporating train-bridge interaction under strong earthquakes. Two types of steel monorail bridges were considered in the study: a conventional type with steel track-girder; an advanced type with composite track-girder and simplified lateral bracing system. During strong earthquakes, monorail train was assumed standing on the track-girder of monorail bridges. Observations through the analytical study showed that considering the monorail train as additional mass rather than a dynamic system in numerical modeling overestimated effect of the train load on seismic performance of monorail bridges. Earlier plastic deformations at the end bracing of the girder system absorbed seismic energy and reduced the stress at the pier base. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bithiazole-based poly(arylenevinylene) is synthesized via the Co-catalyzed hydroarylation polyaddition of N,N,N',N'-tetrahexyl-(2,2'-bithiazole)-4,4'-dicarboxamide with 2,7-diethynyl-9,9-bis(2-ethylhexyl)fluorene in a regioselective manner. The introduction of the 2,2'-bithiazole unit deepens the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy levels of the polymer compared to the analogous bithiophene-based poly(arylenevinylene). N-Methylation and N-oxidation of the thiazole moiety further deepen the HOMO and LUMO energy levels of the polymer, which is attributed to the enhanced electron-withdrawing effect. The N-oxidized polymer exhibits a high photoluminescence quantum yield and serves as an emitting material in an organic light-emitting diode, and its deep HOMO energy level efficiently restrains the trapping of holes in the host poly(vinylcarbazole) matrix., (© 2025 Wiley‐VCH GmbH.)

Coacervation, the phase separation of liquid induced by polymeric solutes, sometimes results in the formation of oligomeric clusters of droplets. The morphology of the clusters is non-uniform because the clustering is a consequence of the random collisions of the drifting droplets. Here we report distinctively organized coacervation, yielding colloidal molecules with monodisperse size, morphological symmetry, and compositional heterogeneity. We investigate the coacervation of a mixture of two types of synthetic polymers and find that one of the polymers coacervates first and serves as a core droplet, on which the other polymer coacervates subsequently to form satellite droplets. The satellite droplets arrange themselves symmetrically around the core and solidify without losing the morphology. The number of satellites and their symmetry are modulable depending on the chemical affinity and the diameter of the droplets. This finding highlights the capability of coacervation as a non-templated and non-covalent pathway to form aspherical colloidal materials with structural and functional complexity., (© 2024 The Author(s). Mn-catalyzed hydroarylation polyaddition of 1-(2-pyrimidinyl)pyrrole (1a) with aromatic diynes is investigated. The use of commercially available MnBr(CO) 5 as a precatalyst under the optimized reaction conditions resulted in a site- and regioselective hydroarylation polyaddition, affording the corresponding poly(arylenevinylene)s (PAVs) with excellent vinylene selectivity. The reaction protocol eliminates the production of stoichiometric amounts of byproducts from the monomers. The nonstoichiometric polyaddition of an excess amount of 1a with aromatic diynes is also demonstrated. Exercise-induced anaphylaxis (EIA) is a relatively rare condition but can be a diagnostic pitfall in daily practice. Leek allergy is extremely rare, and there have been no reports, to our knowledge, of leek-dependent EIA. Here, we report the first case of exercise- and leek-induced anaphylaxis. An 18-year-old woman presented with symptoms of anaphylaxis after exercise in the morning. Prick-to-prick tests for leek was 1+ and challenge test for heated leek was negative, but leek-dependent physical exertion challenge test evoked anaphylaxis. We diagnosed food-dependent EIA by some additional tests including immunoblotting assay with patient's serum. Background: The distribution of anti-factor Xa activity (AXA) in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) taking edoxaban 15 mg has not been fully elucidated., Methods and Results: The trough and peak AXA were measured in 19 NVAF patients taking edoxaban 15 mg. We compared these results with those in patients taking edoxaban 30 mg. The peak AXA differed significantly between the 15 mg and the 30 mg groups (0.74 ± 0.40 IU/mL vs. 1.25 ± 0.48 IU/mL, respectively; p  < 0.0001)., Conclusions: Peak but trough AXA in the patients receiving edoxaban 15 mg were significantly lower than those in patients receiving edoxaban 30 mg., Competing Interests: The authors declare that there are no conflicts of interest., (© 2024 The Author(s). Cross-dehydrogenative coupling (CDC) reactions have attracted attention as short-step synthetic methods for C-C bond formation. Recently, we have developed CDC reactions between naphthalene and fluorobenzene. Rather than exhibiting general regioselectivity, this reaction proceeds selectively at the β-position of naphthalene. In this study, investigation using model complexes as reaction intermediates revealed that the origin of the unique selectivity is the exclusive occurrence of reductive elimination at the β-position. Detailed studies on the reductive elimination showed that the steric hindrance of the naphthyl group and the electron-withdrawing properties of fluorobenzene determine the position at which the reductive elimination reaction proceeds. These results show that the selectivity of the C-H functionalisation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is determined not by the C-H cleavage step, but by the subsequent reductive elimination step. The regioselective CDC reaction was adaptable to various PAHs but was less selective for pyrene with extended π-conjugation. In fluorobenzene substrates, the F atoms at the two ortho positions of the C-H moiety are necessary for high selectivity. The substrate ranges are in good agreement with the proposed mechanism, in which the reductive elimination step determines the regioselectivity.

This study focuses on the development of regiospecific hydroarylation polyaddition of naphthalene- and carbazole-based monomers with diynes under mild reaction conditions at room temperature. A 1-pyrazole substituent serves as an appropriate directing group for a Co-catalyst to efficiently activate the C-H bonds of generally inactive six-membered aromatic hydrocarbons. The 1-pyrazole groups in 2,6-di(1-pyrazolyl)naphthalene adopt planar conformations and act as directing groups, resulting in a smooth hydroarylation reaction. In contrast, the reaction with 1,5-di(1-pyrazolyl)naphthalene do not proceed. The polyaddition reaction of 2,6-di(1-pyrazolyl)naphthalene selectively proceeds at 3,7-positions under mild reaction conditions at 30 °C, and yields corresponding poly(arylenevinylene) (PAV) with high molecular weight. This molecular design is also applicable to the hydroarylation polyaddition of carbazole; the polyaddition reaction of 9-(2-ethylhexyl)-3,6-di(1-pyrazolyl)carbazole selectively occurred at 2,7-positions. The optical and electronic properties of the synthesized compounds are evaluated. The obtained PAVs serve as an emitting material in organic light-emitting diode (OLED). A microsphere, assembled from a chiral π-conjugated polymer with narrow polydispersity, features a well-organized twisted-bipolar structure and exhibits highly biased circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). The CPL emitted toward the equatorial direction is 61-fold greater than that emitted along the zenith direction, which is the highest anisotropy among existing microscopic CPL emitters.

In this study, we have developed a smooth metal-free visible-light-induced bromo-perfluoroalkylation of unactivated olefins with the aid of 10-phenylphenothiazine (PTH) as an organic photoredox catalyst. The reaction is 100% atom-economic redox-neutral and proceeds with stoichiometric amounts of olefin and perfluoroalkyl bromide. To show the potential of these unexplored motifs, we carried out various postfunctionalizations taking advantage of the bromine atom, including gram-scale experiments.

Rationale: Phosphodiesterase 4D negative allosteric modulators (PDE4D NAMs) enhance memory and cognitive function in animal models without emetic-like side effects. However, the relationship between increased cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) signaling and the effects of PDE4D NAM remains elusive., Objective: To investigate the roles of hippocampal cAMP metabolism and synaptic activation in the effects of D159687, a PDE4D NAM, under baseline and learning-stimulated conditions., Results: At 3 mg/kg, D159687 enhanced memory formation and consolidation in contextual fear conditioning; however, neither lower (0.3 mg/kg) nor higher (30 mg/kg) doses induced memory-enhancing effects. A biphasic (bell-shaped) dose-response effect was also observed in a scopolamine-induced model of amnesia in the Y-maze, whereas D159687 dose-dependently caused an emetic-like effect in the xylazine/ketamine anesthesia test. At 3 mg/kg, D159687 increased cAMP levels in the hippocampal CA1 region after conditioning in the fear conditioning test, but not in the home-cage or conditioning cage (i.e., context only). By contrast, 30 mg/kg of D159687 increased hippocampal cAMP levels under all conditions. Although both 3 and 30 mg/kg of D159687 upregulated learning-induced Fos expression in the hippocampal CA1 30 min after conditioning, 3 mg/kg, but not 30 mg/kg, of D159687 induced phosphorylation of synaptic plasticity-related proteins such as cAMP-responsive element-binding protein, synaptosomal-associated protein 25 kDa, and the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor subunit NR2A., Conclusions: Our findings suggest that learning-stimulated conditions can alter the effects of a PDE4D NAM on hippocampal cAMP levels and imply that a PDE4D NAM exerts biphasic memory-enhancing effects associated with synaptic plasticity-related signaling activation., (© 2023. Fluorinated polymers are important materials in everyday life; however, most monomers of widely used fluoropolymers are gaseous, and their polymerization is difficult in an ordinary laboratory. Therefore, partially fluorinated polymers have recently been reported. As an easy-to-handle fluorine-containing monomer, α-trifluoromethylstyrene (TFMST) can be used to produce partially fluorinated polymers with trifluoromethyl groups in the main chain; however, TFMST does not homopolymerize, and there are limited reports on its copolymerization with styrene (ST). In this study, we applied the controlled radical polymerization method, which is effective for the polymerization of ST, to the copolymerization of TFMST and ST. We also showed that nitroxide-mediated polymerization is effective. The content ratio of TFMST in the TFMST-ST copolymer can be controlled between 10% and 40% by changing its monomer ratio. Additionally, the polymerization of TFMST and ST with substituents was performed to increase structural variations. The thermal stability as well as water and oil repellency of the synthesized polymers with different composition ratios and substituents were also evaluated.

Small molecules and polymers with conjugated structures can be used as organic optoelectronic materials. These molecules have conventionally been synthesized by cross-coupling reactions; however, in recent years, direct functionalization of C-H bonds has been used to synthesize organic optoelectronic materials. Representative reactions include direct arylation reactions (C-H/C-X couplings, with X being halogen or pseudo-halogen) and cross-dehydrogenative coupling (C-H/C-H cross-coupling) reactions. Although these reactions are convenient for short-step synthesis, they require regioselectivity in the C-H bonds and suppression of undesired homo-coupling side reactions. This review introduces examples of the synthesis of organic optoelectronic materials using two types of direct C-H functionalization reactions. In addition, we summarize our recent activities in the development of direct C-H functionalization reactions using fluorobenzenes as substrates. Nonstoichiometric direct arylation polycondensation of 2,2',3,3',5,5',6,6'-octafluorobiphenyl with excess of 2,7-diiodo-9,9-dioctyl-9H-fluorene is demonstrated. Pd/Ag dual-catalyst system under water/2-methyltetrahydrofuran biphasic conditions enables direct arylation under mild conditions and promotes the intramolecular transfer of a Pd catalyst walking through the fluorene moiety. The nonstoichiometric direct arylation polycondensation under the optimized reaction conditions produces the corresponding π-conjugated polymer with a high molecular weight and terminal octafluorobiphenyl units at both ends., (© 2023 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Fluoroalkyl compounds are widely used, underscoring a pressing need for the development of methods for their synthesis. However, reports on perfluoroalkylation to styrenes have been sparse. In this study, both hydroxy- and hydro-perfluoroalkylation of styrene were achieved using visible light reactions, catalyzed by eosin Y, by selecting appropriate additives and controlling the eosin Y quenching cycle. These reactions are heavy-metal free, use water as the hydroxyl or hydrogen source, and employ inexpensive and readily available reagents.

Introduction: The efficacy of catheter ablation in patients with low cardiac function has been previously reported; however, only a few studies have included mid-range ejection fraction (mrEF). This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation in patients with left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) < 50%., Methods: This study retrospectively analyzed 79 patients (reduced ejection fraction [rEF]/mrEF, 38/41; paroxysmal/persistent, 37/42; heart failure hospitalizations within one year before ablation, 36 [45.6%]) who underwent the first ablation procedure at our hospital from April 2017 to December 2021. Radiofrequency ablation and cryoablation were performed for 69 and 10 patients, respectively., Results: Complications included pacemaker implantation for postoperative sick sinus syndrome in one patient and inguinal hematoma in one patient. Regarding efficacy, there were significant postoperative improvements in echocardiographic data, blood test values, and diuretic use. After a mean follow-up of 60 months, 86.1% patients had no AF recurrence. There were 9 heart failure hospitalizations (11.4%) and 5 all-cause deaths (6.3%); no significant differences were found between the rEF and mrEF groups. We fabricated a flexible and red-emissive microcrystal resonator for highly efficient optical waveguiding. The microfiber crystals of diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) used in this work possess a high photoluminescence (PL) quantum efficiency (Φ PL = 0.45) and exhibit a micromechanical deformation shape in the curved state. The crystals show optical fringes in their PL spectra, suggesting the existence of a naturally formed Fabry-Pérot crystal resonator owing to its flat crystal surface. The group refractive index ( n g ) and Rabi splitting energy ( ℏ Ω) indicating the coupling strength between excitons and resonator photons are large ( n g = 3.7-6.0, ℏ Ω = 1.38 eV), suggesting the strong confinement of waveguiding photons. Spatially resolved PL measurements revealed that the PL in a crystal fiber is efficiently waveguided, even in a curved crystal with a very small curvature radius of 11 μm. Strong photon confinement inside a crystal resonator is a plausible origin of efficient optical waveguiding.

Fluorine-containing polymers are one of the most useful materials among various polymers. In this study, we have developed synthesis methods for fluorine-containing polymers through sequential and chain polymerization based on the generation of perfluoroalkyl radicals by photoirradiation halogen bonding of perfluoroalkyl iodide and amines. In sequential polymerization, fluoroalkyl-alkyl-alternating polymers were synthesized by the polyaddition of diene and diiodoperfluoroalkane. In chain polymerization, polymers with perfluoroalkyl terminals were synthesized by polymerization of general-purpose monomers, with perfluoroalkyl iodide as the initiating species. Diphenylanthracene (DPA) and its derivatives are promising semiconducting materials for p-type organic-field-effect transistors (OFETs). In this study, to develop n-type semiconducting materials with an anthracene core, pentafluorobenzene was introduced into anthracene by C-H direct arylation, enabling the synthesis of various bis(pentafluorophenyl)anthracene (DPA-F) derivatives. The high reactivity of the pentafluorobenzene C-H bond allows direct arylation for synthesizing DPA-F derivatives in a single step. The introduction of strong electron-withdrawing pentafluorophenyl groups provides the anthracene derivatives with n-type semiconducting properties, in contrast to the p-type properties of the parent DPAs. Among the synthesized compounds, 2,6-bis(pentafluorophenyl)anthracene shows a high electron mobility of 0.12±0.02 cm 2 /Vs and an on/off ratio>10 6 in OFETs. The high crystallinity results in the smooth electron transport. We developed a simple and sustainable method for the hydroxy-perfluoroalkylation of electron-deficient conjugated olefins and styrenes. In this protcol, in situ generated enamine forms electron-donor-accepter (EDA) complexes with perfluoroalkyl iodide, and reaction proceed with visible-light irradiation. Tertiary amine also interacts with perfluoroalkyl iodide via halogen-bonding, promoting the perfluoroalkyl radical generation. This reaction does not require any transition-metal or photoredox catalyst, and gaseous oxygen is used as the green hydroxy source. Moreover, various commercially available substrates and perfluoroalkyl iodides were tolerated, affording the desired hydroxy-perfluoroalkylated products in good to moderate yields (>50 examples, up to 90%)., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)
