There is fine-scale spatial heterogeneity in key vegetation properties including leaf-area index (LAI) and biomass in treeless northern peatlands, and hyperspectral drone data with high spatial and spectral resolution could detect the spatial patterns with high accuracy. However, the advantage of hyperspectral drone data has not been tested in a multi-source remote sensing approach (i.e. inclusion of multiple different remote sensing datatypes); and overall, sub-meter-level leaf-area index (LAI) and biomass maps have largely been absent. We evaluated the detectability of LAI and biomass patterns at a northern boreal fen (Halssiaapa) in northern Finland with multi-temporal and multi-source remote sensing data and assessed the benefit of hyperspectral drone data. We measured vascular plant percentage cover and height as well as moss cover in 140 field plots and connected the structural information to measured aboveground vascular LAI and biomass and moss biomass with linear regressions. We predicted both total and plant functional type (PFT) specific LAI and biomass patterns with random forests regressions with predictors including RGB and hyperspectral drone (28 bands in a spectral range of 500–900 nm), aerial and satellite imagery as well as topography and vegetation height information derived from structure-from-motion drone photogrammetry and aerial lidar data. The modeling performance was between moderate and good for total LAI and biomass (mean explained variance between 49.8 and 66.5%) and variable for PFTs (0.3–61.6%). Hyperspectral data increased model performance in most of the regressions, usually relatively little, but in some of the regressions, the inclusion of hyperspectral data even decreased model performance (change in mean explained variance between −14.5 and 9.1%-points). The most important features in regressions included drone topography, vegetation height, hyperspectral and RGB features. The spatial patterns and landscape estimates of LAI and biomass were quite similar in regressions with or without hyperspectral data, in particular for moss and total biomass. The results suggest that the fine-scale spatial patterns of peatland LAI and biomass can be detected with multi-source remote sensing data, vegetation mapping should include both spectral and topographic predictors at sub-meter-level spatial resolution and that hyperspectral imagery gives only slight benefits.

The industry is providing vehicles with advanced features and technologies that allows vehicles to connect and communicate with their nearby environment. These technologies’ umbrella term, Cooperative Intelligent Transportation Systems (C-ITS) are aimed to enhance road traffic efficiency, safety and assist the drivers in multiple ways. The C-ITS communication system should be able to offer the functional benefits to different sets of use-cases, each having a particular sub-set of requirements. In this paper some of the relevant use-case scenarios utilizing road weather and traffic information are studied in terms of communication technology. The key requirements for C-ITS use-case scenarios are analyzed and an evaluation of the ITS-G5 protocol stack is performed. The performance of ITS-G5 in use-case scenarios is considered testing messages (alerts) on road weather and traffic information in realistic environments. The results indicate that the performance of ITS-G5 in tested use-case scenarios offers 90-98% success rate in the delivery of safety messages at a transmission frequency of 10Hz. Also, ITS-G5 delivers safety alerts with a minimum delay so that it satisfies the C-ITS use-case requirements in real environments. The C-ITS pilot platform also performs efficiently in terms of transmitting packets from a safe distance with minimum network latency and packet loss between vehicles and infrastructure. C-ITS pilot use-cases were tested on the platform developed and tailored by the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI).

Accidents involving heavy road vehicles are often destructive, causing operational losses, human casualties, infrastructure losses, and negative environmental impacts. The risk is especially high in wintertime traffic. The Eureka Xecs SafeTrucks project (Heavy traffic safety improvements by advanced dynamics and road weather services) develops real-time vehicle-specific weather and safety services tailored to each vehicle, based on the vehicle’s own sensor-based observations combined with data from weather service systems and an analysis of the vehicle’s own dynamics. The services will also be analyzed by Digital Twin modeling in Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) and Driver-In-the-Loop (DIL) scenarios, in order to evaluate and refine them in a controlled environment. This paper focuses on operative fleet piloting, while the Digital Twin approach will be presented in future work. The pilot services are ultimately tested in a pilot system within operative heavy traffic. This paper presents the concept and architecture of the platform, with preliminary results of pilot services operation, alternative communication analysis, and system evaluation.

Business Finland 6G Visible project’s objective is the development of 6G-era service and architecture solutions utilizing autonomous and semi-autonomous driving, with both physical and logical computational elements and with use cases for real-life verification and validation. Finnish Meteorological Institute is focusing especially on weather- and safety-related services for autonomous vehicles. We are tailoring our road weather services for the special needs of autonomous driving, keeping in mind that autonomous vehicles are more sensitive to the harsh winter weather conditions and benefit from more accurate weather information considering the sensor systems of each vehicle. Employing weather radar-based nowcasting of more accurate short-term precipitation forecasting benefits autonomous traffic, especially in cases of heavy local precipitation by re-routing/route planning and avoiding heaviest precipitation. Evaluation of autonomous vehicles’ sensor systems’ sensitivity to harsh weather conditions allows for weather forecasting based on the real vulnerability of each vehicle.
