The erosional state of a landscape is often assessed through a series of metrics that quantify the morphology of drainage basins and divides. Such metrics have been well explored in tectonically active environments to evaluate the role of different processes in sculpting topography, yet relatively few works have applied these analyses to radial landforms such as volcanoes. We quantify drainage basin geometries on volcanic edifices of varying ages using common metrics (e.g., Hack's law, drainage density, and number of basins that reach the edifice summit, as well as basin hypsometry integral, length, width, relief, and average topographic slope). Relating these measurements to the log-mean age of activity for each edifice, we find that drainage density, basin hypsometry, basin length, and basin width quantify the degree of erosional maturity for these landforms. We also explore edifice drainage basin growth and competition by conducting a divide mobility analysis on the volcanoes, finding that young volcanoes are characterized by nearly uniform fluvial basins within unstable configurations that are more prone to divide migration. As basins on young volcanoes erode, they become less uniform but adapt to a more stable configuration with less divide migration. Finally, we analyze basin spatial geometries and outlet spacing on edifices, discovering an evolution in radial basin configurations that differ from typical linear mountain ranges. From these, we present a novel conceptual model for edifice degradation that allows new interpretations of composite volcano histories and provides predictive quantities for edifice morphologic evolution.

While fluvial features are plentiful on Mars and offer valuable insights into past surface conditions, the climatic conditions inferred from these valleys, like precipitation and surface runoff discharges, remain the subject of debate. Model-based estimations have already been applied to several Martian valleys, but exploration of the related numerical estimations has been limited. This work applies an improved precipitation-based, steady-state erosion/accumulation model to a Martian valley and compares it to a terrestrial Mars analogue dessert catchment area. The simulations are based on a previously observed precipitation event and estimate the fluvial-related hydrological parameters, like flow depth, velocity, and erosion/accumulation processes in two different but morphologically similar watersheds. Moderate differences were observed in the erosion/accumulation results (0.13/−0.06 kg/m2/s for Zafit (Earth) and 0.01/−0.007 for Tinto B (Mars)). The difference is probably related to the lower areal ratio of surface on Mars where the shield factor is enough to trigger sediment movement, while in the Zafit basin, there is a larger area of undulating surface. The model could be applied to the whole surface of Mars. Using grain size estimation from the global THEMIS dataset, the grain size value artificially increased above that observed, and decreased hypothetic target rock density tests demonstrated that the model works according to theoretical expectations and is useful for further development. The findings of this work indicate the necessity of further testing of similar models on Mars and a better general analysis of the background geomorphological understanding of surface evolution regarding slope angles.

Walnuts are highly valued for their rich nutritional content, but their quality degrades during storage due to oxidation and other quality reducing processes. This study investigated the use of bioactive compounds extracted from walnut pomace, a by-product of walnut oil production, to develop an edible coating that extends the shelf life of ‘Milotai 10’ walnut kernels. Walnut kernels were stored for eight months in four different packaging materials (PE, PP, MPP, PLA) and three treatments were used (air or without treatment, nitrogen gas, and walnut pomace extract coating). The effects of these combinations on walnut quality parameters, including polyphenol content, vitamin E, fatty acids, peroxide value, and color, were analyzed. The results show that the combination of metallized polypropylene packaging under nitrogen treatment or with atmospheric air and walnut pomace extract (MPP-A-E+) best preserves walnut quality, making it a promising option for extending shelf-life.

A model-based surface fluvial erosion and deposition approach was adapted to Martian conditions to forecast the potential locations for shallow subsurface sampling by the Rosalind Franklin ExoMars rover at Oxia Planum. While remote and on-site images show only the surface visible features, former fluvial-related accumulation sites might be hidden. During the fluvial activity, most accumulation-related areas are interesting with regard to clay-like sediments, which could adsorb organics effectively—such sites could be identified by modeling. By applying the SIMWE fluvial erosion/deposition model, substantial variability in accumulation and deposition-dominated areas with their specific pattern and spatial distribution could be outlined, indicating that sophisticated targeting of future sampling could use such a model-based approach. At the main valley-like feature, former water flow tracks were identified, as well as deposition-dominated locations, which are the best targets for shallow subsurface sampling. Joint evaluation of safety aspects like slope angle and loose sand dunes with scientific aspects provide the best sampling locations. Such model-based targeting is important as by using only orbital images, these locations could not be identified.

Identifying surface sites with significant astrobiological potential on Mars requires a comprehensive understanding of past geological processes and conditions there, including the shallow subsurface region. Numerical modelling could distinguish between regions dominated by erosion and those characterized by sediment accumulation in ancient wet environments. The target area of Jezero Crater is relatively well explored and thus is an ideal site to evaluate model calculations; however, important works are still missing on expectations related to its shallow subsurface . In this work, the best available approaches were followed, and only surface morphology was considered (supposedly formed by the last fluvial episode). The shallow subsurface became an important target recently, and this model could provide new inputs in this area. Erosion–accumulation models are suitable for terrestrial surface features, but few have been applied to Mars. This work addresses this challenge using the SIMWE (SIMulated Water Erosion) model on the Jezero Crater delta, the landing site of the Perseverance rover. For calculations, the average grain size according to the THEMIS TI data was applied to the target area. The flow depth varied between 1.89 and 34.74 m (average of 12.66 m). The water-filled channel width ranged from 35.3 to 341.42 m. A flow velocity of 0.008–11.6 m/s, a maximum erosion rate of 5.98 g/m2/h, and a deposition 4.07 g/m2/h were estimated. These calculated values are close to the range of estimations from other authors assuming precipitation of 1–20 mm/h and discharges of 60–400 m3/s. The model was able to distinguish between erosion- and accumulation-dominated areas about 1 m above Jezero Crater’s delta that are not visible from above. This model helps to identify the accumulation-dominated areas with the finest grain size with good preservation capability for the shallow but invisible subsurface.

The use of mass flow simulations in volcanic hazard zonation and mapping is often limited by model complexity (i.e. uncertainty in correct values of model parameters), a lack of model uncertainty quantification, and limited approaches to incorporate this uncertainty into hazard maps. When quantified, mass flow simulation errors are typically evaluated on a pixel-pair basis, using the difference between simulated and observed (“actual”) map-cell values to evaluate the performance of a model. However, these comparisons conflate location and quantification errors, neglecting possible spatial autocorrelation of evaluated errors. As a result, model performance assessments typically yield moderate accuracy values. In this paper, similarly moderate accuracy values were found in a performance assessment of three depth-averaged numerical models using the 2012 debris avalanche from the Upper Te Maari crater, Tongariro Volcano, as a benchmark. To provide a fairer assessment of performance and evaluate spatial covariance of errors, we use a fuzzy set approach to indicate the proximity of similarly valued map cells. This “fuzzification” of simulated results yields improvements in targeted performance metrics relative to a length scale parameter at the expense of decreases in opposing metrics (e.g. fewer false negatives result in more false positives) and a reduction in resolution. The use of this approach to generate hazard zones incorporating the identified uncertainty and associated trade-offs is demonstrated and indicates a potential use for informed stakeholders by reducing the complexity of uncertainty estimation and supporting decision-making from simulated data.

A medium‐grade, poorly weathered CO3‐type meteorite was subjected to artificial space weathering by 1 keV protons in three subsequent steps, with gradually increasing doses from 1011 to 1017 protons per cm2. The resulting mineral modifications were identified by Raman spectroscopy, with specific emphasis on main minerals such as olivine (bands: 817, 845 cm−1), pyroxene (1007 cm−1), and partly amorphous feldspar (509 cm−1), considering variation in band shift and bandwidth (full width at half maximum, FWHM). After the first and second irradiations, variable band position changes were observed, probably from metastable alterations by Mg loss of the minerals, while the third stronger irradiation showed band shift dominated by amorphization. The olivine and pyroxene show weak increase in FWHM after the first irradiation, while more changes happened after the second and third irradiations. The flux after the third irradiation was higher than in other works, caused stronger damage in crystal lattice, partly resembling to dimerization as described by shock metamorphism. The glassy feldspar was characterized by high FWHM values already at the beginning, indicating weak crystallinity already that become even less crystallized, thus their bands disappeared after the third irradiation. Bands of hydrous minerals (goethite clay, chlorite) were not visible after the third irradiation, confirming some earlier results in the literature. Based on our results, moderately fresh surfaces could show stochastic but small spectral differences compared to the fresh most meteorites by metastable mineral alterations. The interpretation of Raman spectra of heavily space‐weathered surfaces could further benefit from the joint evaluation of alteration induced by both shock impact alteration and space weathering. Background: A considerable proportion of the symptoms associated with excessive dietary intake can be attributed to systemic imbalances in lipid metabolism. The prominent toxicity of saturated fatty acids has been repeatedly demonstrated and sheds light on the protective role of stearoyl-CoA desaturase-1 (SCD1), the key enzyme for fatty acid desaturation. SCD1 protein expression is regulated at the levels of transcription, translation, and degradation. However, the modulating effect of the variability of the human genome must also be taken into account. Therefore, we aimed to ascertain whether natural missense or frameshift mutations in SCD1 (p.H125P, p.M224L, p.A333T, p.R253AfsTer7) could influence the expression, degradation, or function of the enzyme. Methods: In silico and in vitro experiments were conducted to comprehensively evaluate the consequences associated with each genetic variation, with the objective of using the results to propose a risk or severity ranking of SCD1 variants. Results: As anticipated, the p.R253AfsTer7 variant was identified as the most deleterious in structural, functional, and quantitative terms. The p.H125P variant also reduced the desaturation capacity of the enzyme in accordance with the predicted structural alterations and augmented degradation resulting from folding complications. This was aggravated by increased mRNA instability and accompanied by mild endoplasmic reticulum stress induction. The p.A333T protein exhibited an intermediate phenotype, whereas p.M224L showed no deleterious effects and even increased the amount of SCD1. Conclusions: In conclusion, the large-scale identification of genetic variations needs to be supplemented with comprehensive functional characterization of these variations to facilitate adequate personalized prevention and treatment of lipid metabolism-related conditions.
