Introduction: Social media are increasingly popular and emerging as important information sources. The study investigates how users' sex and problem-solving style affect their use and evaluation of social media in two contexts. Method: A Web survey including the problem solving inventory (problem solving inventory) was used to collect data. Over 1,000 undergraduates in the United States participated. Analysis: For each context, two-way ANOVAs were conducted with sex and problem solving inventory score as independent variables and the frequency of using different social media platforms and the frequency of taking different evaluative actions as dependent variables. Results: In academic contexts, significant sex effects were found in the use of wikis, blogs and internet forums. Significant effects of problem-solving style were found in the use of social networking sites, user reviews, blogs and microblogs. An interaction between sex and problem-solving style was found in the use of social networking sites and microblogs. In everyday life contexts, sex effects were found. Males used wikis and internet forums whereas females used social networking sites and microblogs frequently. As for problem-solving styles, ineffective problem-solvers used internet forums frequently. Regarding the use of evaluation strategies, females with effective problem-solving styles checked other users' reactions frequently while males with ineffective style did so in academic contexts. In everyday contexts, effective problem-solvers used most of the evaluation strategies frequently. Conclusions: Social media use and evaluation behaviours varied depending on contexts. sex effects remained significant when problem-solving style has been taken into account. Findings suggest that effects of sex on information behaviour may need to be examined along with other psychological and sociocultural factors. Social media have become increasingly popular among different user groups. Although used for social purposes, some social media platforms (such as Wikipedia) have been emerging as important information sources. Focusing on undergraduate students, a survey was conducted to investigate the following: (1) which social media platforms are used as information sources; (2) what are the main reasons for using these social media platforms for information seeking; and (3) what kinds of actions are taken to evaluate the quality of the information gained from such sources. The study provides a snapshot of current trends in terms of the use of social media as information sources. It also sheds lights on the actions that the undergraduate students took to evaluate information from social media, including social networking and video sharing sites that have rarely been studied previously. Based on the findings, suggestions are made for information literacy programs and roles of librarians and educators.

The proportion of ethnic minorities in the LIS school student population has remained significantly lower than in the U.S. population: in 2002, ethnic minorities constituted only 11.3 percent of the LIS student population, compared to 31.3 percent of the U.S. population. Despite efforts by LIS schools and associations in recruiting and retaining more students of color, the underrepresentation of ethnic minorities continues. This study aimed at assessing what LIS schools and other library and information professional associations have done for the recruitment and retention of students of color and identifying effective strategies for the recruitment and retention from the perspective of librarians of color. A nationwide, Web-based survey was conducted to collect input from librarians of color who already have experience with LIS schools and the librarianship. Based on the findings, suggestions were made to improve the recruitment and retention of students of color, which will ultimately contribute to the ethnic/cultural diversity in librarianship.

A survey of undergraduate students examined how students' beliefs about their problem-solving styles and abilities (including avoidant style, confidence, and personal control in problem-solving) influenced their perception and selection of sources, as reflected in (1) perceived characteristics of sources, (2) source characteristics considered important as selection criteria, and (3) frequency of source use. The findings can be helpful in designing bibliographic instruction and information literacy programs.

Describes results from two independent investigations of college students that were conducted to study the impact of differences in users' cognition and search tasks on Web search activities and outcomes. The purpose of this study was to examine residents' perceived quality of life (QOL), and how it influences their expectations and support in mega sport event settings. Hosting mega sport events that can successfully meet the residents' high expectation and support has been highly acclaimed due to its far-reaching positive effects on the community's economy. An empirical study was conducted by collecting data from 205 residents of Incheon city during the 2014 Incheon Asian games. The findings indicate that they perceive QOL differently and form significantly different expectations depending on the economic status of an area such as wealthy economic and societal area vs. underdeveloped economic and societal area. Moreover, positive expectation led to support for the Incheon Asian games, while negative expectation did not. This study suggests that different marketing messages should be delivered to different QOL groups since each QOL group has different expectations of a mega event. How to obtain valuable knowledge more effectively from historical cases and satisfy the requirements of supporting diagnosis or management decision making is one of the important and challenging issues in the research field of modern historical information management and intelligent decision-making science. In this study, we develop a novel case-based reasoning (CBR) method which is based on information entropy and improved gray systems theory for knowledge acquisition of historical diagnosis decision-making cases. Specially, information entropy for weight determination is introduced into the CBR, as well as a gray system theory combined to support the diagnosis decision making of breast cancer. Based on two different real-world data sets, we conduct experimental studies to compare the performance of the Delphi method and information entropy. We also investigate which combination is best among different weight determination methods and retrieval algorithms. The results suggest that: generally, information entropy is a better approach to weight derivation and better matching effect can be obtained if it is integrated into the retrieval algorithm based on gray system theory rather than Euclidean distance algorithm. Our study can provide a novel approach to obtain weight values of cases, as well as an effective tool to mine valuable decision knowledge from historical cases in public hospitals. The study described in this article investigated how differences in cognitive style and online search experience influence the search performance and navigational pattern of individuals utilizing a university World Wide Web (WWW) site. Forty-eight undergraduate students with diverse academic backgrounds participated in the study. On the basis of cognitive style and prior experience with online database search, the participants were assigned to 1 of the following groups: (a) field-dependent (FD) with little or no online search experience, (b) FD with substantial online search experience, (c) field-independent (FI) with little or no online search experience, and (d) FI with substantial online search experience. It was found that cognitive style influenced search time, whereas online search experience affected navigational style, such as jumps and layer traversal. Cognitive style and online search experience also interacted to influence search performance and navigational style. FDs with little or no online search experience navigated the WWW in a fairly linear mode, using embedded links frequently. They also tended to visit more nodes and used "Home" more frequently than the rest. The results imply that as FD searchers gain more online search experience, their navigational style and search performance change and become comparable to that of FDs. Based on these findings, some suggestions are made to improve the WWW interface and WWW user training programs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Understanding user needs and the ways in which users utilize information systems is important since it can help us in developing and designing more effective and efficient information systems. This paper examines some of the theories that have evolved to explain what kind of mental processes are required for the use of information systems. Research on users of information systems is categorized into two basic groups (system-oriented vs. user-oriented studies), and reviewed. A sample of methodologies used for examining users and their information seeking behavior is then introduced and described. Abstract: We reported the Ag adding effects on the crystallization behavior in Ge2Sb2Te5 film. Ag x (Ge2Sb2Te5)1− x films (where x =0–0.2) were deposited on SiO2 wafer and glass substrate by RF magnetron co-sputtering and annealed by RTA (rapid thermal annealing) at various temperature to crystallize. The effects of Ag adding on the structural, thermal and electrical properties were measured by X-ray diffraction, X-ray reflectivity, AFM, SEM, DSC and 4-point probe analysis. It was found that the crystallization temperature increased by Ag adding in Ge2Sb2Te5 films. However, the surface of Ag x (Ge2Sb2Te5)1− x films got rough when annealing temperature and Ag contents increased. According to the Kissinger method, the activation energy for crystallization increased as the Ag content increased. It is thought that Ag atoms in Ge2Sb2Te5 act as an amorphous stabilizer and they make it hard to switch from amorphous to crystalline phase. From this study, we would show the Ag0.06(Ge2Sb2Te5)0.94 film is suitable for phase change memory material because of its higher crystallization temperature and structural stability. Purpose: This study's purpose was to explore the experiences of peer supporters regarding their work in a home visit program for people with HIV infection., Patients and Methods: A qualitative descriptive study was conducted using focus groups. Participants were 12 HIV-positive peer supporters conducting home visits with people living with HIV/AIDS in South Korea. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data., Results: Six major themes emerged: feeling a sense of belonging; concern about financial support; facing HIV-related stigma and fear of disclosure; reaching out and acting as a bridge of hope; feeling burnout; and need for quality education. The study findings indicate that although peer supporters experience several positive aspects in the role, such as feelings of belonging, they also experience issues that make it difficult to be successful in the role, including the position's instability, work-related stress, and concerns about the quality of their continuing education., Conclusion: The findings suggest that to maintain a stable and effective peer supporter program, such positions require financial support, training in how to prevent and manage stress associated with the role, and a well-developed program of education and training.

Background and Aim of the Study: The preferred choice of annuloplasty ring in mitral surgery has not yet been determined. The study aim was to compare the effects of using two ring types, the Duran and the Carpentier-Edwards, for degenerative mitral valve repair., Methods: The follow up data were reviewed from 294 patients who underwent mitral valvuloplasty for degenerative mitral regurgitation (MR) with either a Carpentier-Edwards ring (n = 153) or a Duran ring (n = 141), between 1994 and 2004. The long-term clinical and echocardiographic outcomes were compared., Results: There were no inter-group preoperative demographic differences. The preoperative left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction (EF) and MR grade were similar in both groups, but the left atrial (LA) size, LV mass and LV dimension were significantly greater in the CE group. Rates of overall survival, reoperation-free survival and MR (> or = 3)-free survival were similar in the two groups (five-year MR-free survival 75.1 +/- 4.6% for CE and 82.4 +/- 4.5% for Duran; p = 0.83). The CE group showed an overall superior five-year mitral stenosis (MS)-free survival. Significantly more Duran patients had a mean transmitral pressure gradient (MPG) of > or = 10 mmHg (five-year MS (MPG > or = 10 mmHg)-free survival rate: 91.2 +/- 2.8% in for CE and 65.1 +/- 10.7% for Duran group; p = 0.011). The LV EF did not change over time in either group. In contrast, the LV mass and LV dimension decreased significantly after surgery in both groups, but no significant inter-group difference was seen for either index., Conclusion: Although the Duran and Carpentier-Edwards rings showed comparable long-term outcomes in terms of LV function, MR recurrence, survival and reoperation, a greater tendency towards MS development was observed with the Duran ring, this being most likely due to late pannus formation.

The search for alternative epicardial energy sources in the treatment of nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (AF) is a relatively new aspect of the evolving spectrum of Maze operations. We tested the hypothesis that epicardial microwave ablation produces identical results to those of the standard cryosurgical Maze. Fourteen consecutive patients with chronic AF underwent on-pump epicardial Maze procedures after routine cardiac surgery. The results were compared with those of 14 control patients selected from our Maze database of 280 patients. There were no differences in age, sex, cardiothoracic ratio, duration of AF, pump time, intensive care unit or hospital stays. The aortic cross clamp time with epicardial microwave was, however, shortened from 110 to 65 minutes (p=0.011). The recurrence rate of AF after discharge showed no significant difference between the two groups (14% vs. 15%, p=0.841). Epicardial microwave ablation might be a valuable alternative to the conventional cryosurgical Maze procedure, especially for those patients without associated mitral valve disease.

Long-term results of orthotopic heart transplantation vary among different institutions. The purpose of the present study was to assess the factors, which might affect long-term survival and complications. Between November 1992 and July 2003, 112 heart transplantations (M/F=89:23) were performed. The standard technique was used in the first 57 patients and the bicaval technique in the latter 55 patients. Indications for transplantation in decreasing order of frequency were dilated cardiomyopathy (75%), ischemic cardiomyopathy (7%), and others (18%). The mean follow up duration was 51.8 +/- 31.3 months with 98 patients remaining alive. Preoperatively, all patients were either in NYHA functional class III or IV. Postoperatively, all patients showed improvement to functional class II or I, except 3 patients that remained in NYHA class III. The mean number of rejection cases within the first year was 0.6 +/- 0.8, with humoral rejection noted in 3 cases. The graft vascular disease (GVD)-free survival at 3 and 5 years was 96% and 83%, respectively. The 7-year survival after heart transplantation was 84%. There were 16 deaths, of which infection (n=4) was the most common followed by rejection (n=3), and malignancy (n=2). The present long-term results, were relatively superior to those seen in western countries. The relatively low GVD-free survival rate is thought to have contributed. The complications encountered after transplantation were mostly immunosuppressive drug related, suggesting further potentials for improvement in long-term survival.

Background: The advantage of total arterial off-pump coronary bypass grafting (OPCAB) over conventional onpump coronary artery bypass grafting with 1 internal thoracic artery and veins (CCAB) in terms of myocardial flow reserve has not been studied. We studied these procedures using thallium- 201 perfusion single-photon emission computed tomography (Tl-201 perfusion SPECT)., Methods: Between 1997 and 2001, 152 patients were recruited from our database (OPCAB, n = 100; CCAB, n = 52). All patients underwent pharmacological stress Tl-201 perfusion SPECT 3 to 12 months after bypass surgery. Myocardial perfusion was analyzed semiquantitatively with a 5-point scoring system in a 20-segment model (0, normal, to 4, absence of uptake). Summed stress (SSS), rest (SRS), and difference score (SDS) of the entire myocardium as well as average scores (ASS, ARS, ADS) of individual walls (anterior, septal, lateral, and inferior) were compared by Student t test as well as by repeated-measures analysis of variance with Bonferroni correction., Results: The SSS, SRS, and SDS of OPCAB versus those of CCAB were 6.86 +/- 0.72 versus 7.17 +/- 0.92, 3.95 +/- 0.57 versus 3.75 +/- 0.73, and 2.91 +/- 0.47 versus 3.42 +/- 0.74 (P > .05). However, the lateral wall showed lower scores in OPCAB (ASS, 0.18 versus 0.41, P = .015; ARS, 0.12 versus 0.20, P = .168; ADS, 0.06 versus 0.21, P = .031). The septal wall had higher scores in OPCAB (ASS, 0.33 versus 0.12, P = .003; ARS, 0.18 versus 0.07, P = .037; ADS, 0.14 versus 0.04, P = .030). The anterior and inferior walls were not different between the 2 groups., Conclusions: OPCAB led to results similar to those of CCAB. The better results in the lateral wall have been the effect of grafting radial artery rather than vein. The similarity in myocardial reserve in the inferior wall between the 2 groups needs further study. There was no deleterious effect of off-pump as opposed to on-pump CAB.
