Advances in remote sensing technologies have revolutionized the monitoring of soil conditions in forest ecosystems, providing valuable insights into soil moisture, nutrient content, and degradation without requiring physical access to remote areas. This article explores the application of key techniques, including satellite-based L-band radiometry, UAV-enabled LiDAR, and visible–NIR spectroscopy, in assessing forest soil properties. Challenges such as canopy interference, spatial resolution limitations, and data validation are discussed, alongside innovative solutions like machine learning and high-resolution digital elevation models. Case studies highlight the effectiveness of remote sensing in addressing environmental and forestry challenges, such as tracking the effects of climate change, logging, and erosion. By integrating advanced imaging technologies with ground-based observations, remote sensing supports sustainable forest management, conservation practices, and ecological research. Binary classification methods encompass various algorithms to categorize data points into two distinct classes. Binary prediction, in contrast, estimates the likelihood of a binary event occurring. We introduce a novel graphical and quantitative approach, the U-smile method, for assessing prediction improvement stratified by binary outcome class. The U-smile method utilizes a smile-like plot and novel coefficients to measure the relative and absolute change in prediction compared with the reference method. The likelihood-ratio test was used to assess the significance of the change in prediction. Logistic regression models using the Heart Disease dataset and generated random variables were employed to validate the U-smile method. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to compare the results of the U-smile method. The likelihood-ratio test demonstrated that the proposed coefficients consistently generated smile-shaped U-smile plots for the most informative predictors. The U-smile plot proved more effective than the ROC curve in comparing the effects of adding new predictors to the reference method. It effectively highlighted differences in model performance for both non-events and events. Visual analysis of the U-smile plots provided an immediate impression of the usefulness of different predictors at a glance. Background: Abortion is one of the most common medical procedures worldwide. Despite this, access to abortion on demand remains restricted in many countries, including Poland. As a result, many women resort to undergoing the procedure without medical supervision, putting themselves at risk of serious health consequences such as drug poisoning, excessive bleeding, and hypovolemia. Unfortunately, some abortions also lead to severe infections. Objective: This study aims to qualitatively identify key themes in abortion forums to analyze the issues faced by individuals. The forums were then quantitatively analyzed to determine which problems were most prevalent. Methods: The most popular abortion forums were identified. A preliminary thematic analysis was conducted for the qualitative phase, followed by a manual quantitative analysis. Two independent researchers reviewed forum posts, categorizing them into specific themes. Results: An analysis of 13,397 responses from 370 threads across 4 forums revealed "Abortion Process Progression" as the most discussed theme, highlighting a strong demand for information, emotional support, and medical guidance. The highest percentage of threads (162/886, 18.3%) focused on the need for mental support and the desire to have someone in contact during the abortion process. Concerns about the effectiveness of the termination also emerged as a significant topic, accounting for 83 of the 886 (9.4%) discussions. "Emotional and Psychological Aspects" and "Medical and Pharmacological Aspects" were also significant, highlighting the need for holistic care. Anxiety and fear related to the process were frequently discussed, accounting for 60 of the 886 (6.8%) responses. The issue of isolation and lack of support was also a common topic, appearing in 30 of the 886 (3.4%) threads. Notably, "Social and Ethical Perception" accounted for only 13 of the 886 (1.5%) responses and appeared in just 13 threads. Conclusions: This study highlights the critical need for information and support for women navigating abortion, particularly in regions where access is restricted. It emphasizes the importance of addressing the multifaceted challenges women face and calls for policy changes and strengthened support networks to improve the health and rights of women, as well as all those seeking gynecological care in abortion contexts. In this study, we are identifying differences in the UV/VIS/NIR (ultraviolet/visible/near-infrared) spectral signatures of maize leaves according to a range of fertilization rates from 0 to 240 kg/ha. By utilizing a FieldSpec spectrometer, it was determined that the spectral response displayed significant differences (p-value = 0.05) under the influence of nitrogen fertilization within the following ranges: near ultraviolet: 355 nm (±5 nm), visible light (green): 550 nm (±15 nm, wide band); 555 nm (±5 nm, narrow band), red edge: 720 nm (±20 nm), infrared: 1075 nm (±50 nm); 1380 nm (±20 nm). Based on the estimated differences, two remote sensing indicators for maize during the 5–6 leaf growth stage and nitrogen fertilization were developed: (NIR-RED_EDGE)/(NIR+RED_EDGE) and (NIR-GREEN)/(NIR+GREEN) where NIR is 1075 nm band, RED_EDGE is 720 nm band and GREEN is 550 nm band. This systematic review aims to summarise the results of controlled trials on dietary supplements (DS) usage and inflammation, oxidative stress, antioxidant status, and thyroid parameter improvement in hypothyroidism (HT)/Hashimoto's thyroiditis (AIT) patients. The study protocol was registered with PROSPERO (no. CRD42022365149). A comprehensive search of the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases resulted in the identification of nineteen randomised controlled trials and three non-randomised studies for the review; three studies examined the effect of supplementation with vitamin D, twelve studies—with selenium, and seven studies—with other DS. Based on very limited evidence, the lack of influence of vitamin D supplementation on inflammatory parameters was found, while no studies have examined oxidative stress and antioxidant status parameters, and only one provided results for a single thyroid parameter after an intervention. Some evidence was found proving that selenium supplementation may decrease inflammation and improve thyroid parameters, but reaching a conclusion about its influence on oxidative stress and antioxidant status is not possible because of the insufficient number of studies. Additionally, due to examining other DS (e.g., multicomponent, Nigella sativa, and genistein) only in single studies, conclusions cannot be drawn. Further long-term, high-quality randomised controlled trials are necessary to better understand the influence of DS on inflammation, oxidative stress, and antioxidant status, as well as their potential to improve thyroid gland function in HT/AIT patients. The purpose of this work was to develop a substitute material model for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures. This paper presents proposals to solve the problem of limited calculation time, both to perform simulation models and to perform effective numerical or analytical analyses of structural elements in order to achieve results consistent with experimental results. Achieving this aim is conditional upon the determination of the material model parameters, taking into account the type of structure, the system of reinforcement, and the static strength–deformation parameters of the component materials. A universal procedure is proposed for determining the parameters of the substitute material model on the basis of the homogenization function, in which the homogenization coefficient is assumed as being equal to the effective reinforcement ratio of real reinforced concrete structural elements. In addition, the introduction of a new concrete constraint coefficient to this procedure, which corresponds to the proportionality coefficient of biaxial to uniaxial compressive strength, is proposed. On the basis of the conducted comparative analyses, the possibility of using the hypothetical substitute material model for the design of building elements and structures was confirmed. The average values of the obtained results for individual research series did not differ from the experimental results by more than 8.5%, for both the numerical and analytical models. Neoehrlichia mikurensis is a new emerging tick-borne Gram-negative bacterium, belonging to the family Anaplasmataceae, the main vector of which in Europe is the tick Ixodes ricinus. N. mikurensis is responsible for neoehrlichiosis, occurring mostly in patients with underlying diseases. In the present study, a total of 348 I. ricinus and Dermacentor reticulatus ticks collected in north-eastern Poland were analyzed for the prevalence of N. mikurensis. A total of 140 questing ticks (124 of I. ricinus ticks and 16 D. reticulatus) collected with the flagging method and 208 ticks (105 and 103 I. ricinus and D. reticulatus, respectively) removed from dogs were selected for the study. cDNA (questing ticks) and total DNA (questing and feeding ticks) were analyzed by qPCR targeting the 16S rRNA gene of N. mikurensis. Positive samples were further analyzed by nested PCR and sequencing. The prevalence differed between ticks collected from vegetation (19.3%; 27/140) and ticks removed from dogs (6.7%; 14/208). The presence of the pathogen in questing and feeding D. reticulatus ticks was proven in Poland for the first time. In summary, our research showed that infections of ticks of both the most common tick species I. ricinus and D. reticulatus in north-eastern Poland are present and ticks collected from urban areas were more often infected than ticks from suburban and natural areas. The detection of N. mikurensis in I. ricinus and D. reticulatus ticks from north-eastern Poland indicates potential transmission risk for tick-bitten humans at this latitude. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper presents integrated effects of concrete samples size and fibers amount on compressive strength of high‐ and ultra‐high strength concretes based on reactive powders. Ready to use the self ‐ compacting mix of high‐performance concrete, was applied. The main aim of the work was to determine compressive strength correlation coefficients for size of cubic samples and integrated compressive strength correlation coefficients for the size of cubic samples including fibers ratio. The article presents the results of experimental tests of compressive strength for 3 sizes of cubic samples, i.e. 40, 100, and 150 mm, with the application of the steel fibers ratio of 0%, 2%, 4% for each sample size. Concrete air content and cone flow test studies were performed for all research series. The obtained results show a diversified influence of the size of the samples and the amount of steel fibers on the results of concrete compressive strength of high‐ and ultra‐high strength concretes based on reactive powders. Namely, the compressive strength correlation coefficient for the size of cubic samples was determined in the range 1.0–1.3, while the integrated compressive strength correlation coefficient the for size of cubic samples including fibers ratio is in the range 1.0–1.47. The aim of this study was to determine the potential risk of human exposure to tick-borne infection in a recreation areas in a spa town located in northern Poland. Questing Ixodes ricinus and Dermacentor reticulatus ticks were collected in the spring of 2018. Tick-borne microorganisms were detected by PCR. Species were identified based on RFLP and the sequencing of DNA. In total, 38.3% of the ticks (34.6% of I. ricinus and 48.6% of D. reticulatus) were infected. The prevalence was 14.9% for Borrelia spp., 10.6% for Babesia spp. and 17.7% for Rickettsia spp. No Anaplasma phagocytophilum was detected. Spirochaetes B. afzelii, B. garinii and B. burgdorferi s.s. were detected only in I. ricinus ticks (20.2%). The differences in the infection rates of Babesia spp. between I. ricinus (7.7%) and D. reticulatus (18.9%) were not significant. DNA of B. canis and B. venatorum were identified in both tick species. B. microti were detected in D. reticulatus ticks. The prevalence of Rickettsia spp. was significantly higher in D. reticulatus (37.8%) than that in I. ricinus (10.6%). R. raoultii was identified only in D. reticulatus and R. helvetica in I. ricinus. The paper presents the method of determining the impact of an external explosion on construction barriers, taking into account the angle of the shock wave. For the presented two variants of the analysis, i.e. for the load placed at a distance of 5 and 10 m from the construction barrier, the initial pressure of the reflected wave, the duration of overpressure and the course of load variability over time were determined. For the assumed parameters of the barrier and the blast load, the values of overpressure were determined, taking into account the angle of incidence and the angle of reflection. Additionally, a comparative analysis of the proposed method with other methods available in the literature was made. The convergence of the results did not exceed 10%. Swimmer's itch or human cercarial dermatitis (HCD) appears as a skin rash caused by an allergic reaction to larval (cercariae) flatworm parasites of the family Schistosomatidae. In our study, two cases of HCD were analyzed; both of them were reported in people swimming in Lake Pluszne. In the summer of 2018, a sample of 397 snails was collected at swimming sites in that area. Five Lymnaea stagnalis (1.9%) were found to host cercariae of bird schistosomes. Positive samples were selected by amplification of the Internal Transcribed Spacers (ITS) gene region. Sequence analysis confirmed that they were homologous with European isolates of Trichobilharzia szidati. The cases reported in this article are the first confirmed cases of HCD in this lake. Introduction: Demodex mites are associated with various symptoms pertaining to facial and eyelid skin in humans. Demodicosis is often reported in elderly people, above 50 years of age. In young adults, the Demodex spp. infection is less common and is asymptomatic or the symptoms are mild. Aim: The aim was to evaluate the occurrence of Demodex spp. in healthy young adults in Poland and analyze the associations between the presence of mites, participants gender and skin type, with regards to hygienic practices and symptoms. Material and methods: The content of facial sebaceous glands and eyelash follicles was examined in a group of 94 people, aged 18-32 years. Metric data and information about face and eyelid skin symptom occurrence, skin type and hygienic practices were collected by diagnostic survey. Results and discussion: Demodex spp. was identified in 21.3% of subjects. In 45% and 30% of carriers Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis occurred, respectively. A mixed infestation in 25% of subjects was detected. Demodex infestation was slightly higher in people with oily and mixed skin (23.5%), compared to those with dry and normal skin (18.6%). No significant influence of shared hygienic accessories on the level of Demodex spp. infection were observed. The skin symptoms of the face and eyelids were reported at 75% for subjects positive for Demodex. Conclusions: Demodex mites are often prevalent in healthy young adults in Poland in both the sebaceous glands of the face and hair follicles. Structuring of aqueous suspensions of colloidal silica nanoparticles near an isolated planar silica–water interface is studied by specular neutron reflectivity. The reflectivity data clearly show that the suspensions develop a damped, oscillatory concentration profile in the normal direction to the interface. The wavelengths of these oscillations agree well with those independently determined by direct force measurements in the slit-geometry. The reflectivity data further demonstrate that the oscillatory structure persists over several layers and that the first particle layer is separated from the interface by a particle-free region. Bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) produced by Komagataeibacter hansenii has received significant attention due to its unique supernetwork structure and properties. It is nevertheless necessary to modify bacterial nanocellulose to achieve materials with desired properties and thus with broader areas of application. The aim here was to influence the 3D structure of BNC by genetic modification of the cellulose producing K. hansenii strain ATCC 53582. Two genes encoding proteins with homology to the MotA and MotB proteins, which participate in motility and energy transfer, were selected for our studies. A disruption mutant of one or both genes and their respective complementation mutants were created. The phenotype analysis of the disruption mutants showed a reduction in motility, which resulted in higher compaction of nanocellulose fibers and improvement in their mechanical properties. The data strongly suggest that these genes play an important role in the formation of BNC membrane by Komagataeibacter species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With arrival of information technology, interaction between consumers and companies become more common. It has implications for the way business function and for business models. The aim of the paper is to analyze crowdsourcing and compare crowdsourcing business models of three product and content crowdsourcing companies, their common features and differences. These companies differ considerably in many respects. The business model framework used is based on Osterwalder and Pigneur's approach. The paper shows various consequences of using crowds. It shows that having crowds as a key asset implies a necessity to take care of the crowd and network effect before launching a crowdsourcing initiative. The paper gives those involved in crowdsourcing insight about factors crucial for their company and points to where they need to concentrate their resources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Carbon-bearing compounds (glucose, sodium acetate, methanol, yeast extract, and nutrient broth) were added in different proportions to cultures to stimulate methanogenesis in a lignite incubation experiment. Their addition significantly influenced the isotopic composition of methane generated during the fermentation of lignite. Glucose was degraded mainly in the first 2 weeks of incubation, when the atmospheric air was present in the headspace and used for biomass growth. Sodium acetate, methanol, and, presumably, lignite were decomposed in the next phase, in which anaerobic conditions occurred. The simultaneous decomposition of sodium acetate and methanol (as single substrates or as a mixture) with lignite resulted in the formation of methane with δ13C(CH4) values typical for methyl-type fermentation. The identification of decomposed compounds in the mixture of sodium acetate and methanol was accomplished via isotopic analysis of carbon and hydrogen in the methane. The δ2H(CH4) values in the case of methanol biodegradation were characterized by a negative trend over time, in contrast to a positive trend observed when sodium acetate decomposed. This observation may help to identify a very good tracer for the determination of methane precursors during methyl-type fermentation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Drought periods have an adverse impact on the condition of oak stands. Research on different types of ecosystems has confirmed a correlation between plant species diversity and the adverse effects of droughts. The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes that occurred in an oak stand (Krotoszyn Plateau, Poland) under the impact of the summer drought in 2015. We used a method based on remote sensing indices from satellite images in order to detect changes in the vegetation in 2014 and 2015. A positive difference was interpreted as an improvement, whereas a negative one was treated as a deterioration of the stand condition. The Shannon-Wiener species diversity was estimated using an iterative principal component analysis (PCA) algorithm based on aerial images. We observed a relationship between the species indices of the individual forest divisions and their response to drought. The highest correlation between the index differences and the Shannon-Wiener indices was found for the Green Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (GNDVI) index (+0.74). In addition, correlations were observed between the mean index difference and the percentage shares in the forest divisions of species such as Pinus sylvestris L. (P. sylvestris) (+0.67 ± 0.08) and Quercus robur L. (Q. robur) (-0.65 ± 0.10). Our results lead us to infer that forest management based on highly diverse habitats is more suitable to meet the challenges in the context of global climatic changes, characterized by increasingly frequent droughts. Reports published in recent years on the increased risk in the Baltic Sea of fish infection with larvae of nematodes potentially pathogenic to humans have prompted a study of European smelt Osmerus eperlanus with respect to the presence of these parasites in the Vistula Lagoon. Additionally, samples of this fish from Lake Hańcza were comparatively considered. The body cavity, the surface of internal organs, the alimentary tract and the swimbladder of fish from two environmentally different water bodies were taken into account in the analysis. Only the tapeworm Proteocephalus longicollis was found in the alimentary tract of the fish from Lake Hańcza. Depending on the period of study, the prevalence ranged from 60% to 100%, and the mean intensity from 11.5 to 42.0. The helminth fauna of smelt from the Vistula Lagoon was more diverse: Cystidicola farionis occurred with a prevalence from 25.9 to 75.0% and a mean intensity of infection from 2.7 to 66.0%, Proteocephalus longicollis and cystacanths of Corynosoma with a prevalence ranging in different years from 12.0 to 44.0% and from 14.8 to 50.0%, respectively. Zoonotic parasites, such as nematode larvae of the Anisakidae family (Contracaecum sp., Anisakis simplex), occurred in the intestine with a prevalence of 31%, 72% and 22% in consecutive years of the study.
