Renewable energy will potentially make an important contribution towards the dual aims of meeting carbon emission reduction targets and future energy demand. However, some technologies have considerable potential to impact on the biodiversity of the environments in which they are placed. In this study, an assessment was undertaken of the realistic deployment potential of a range of renewable energy technologies in the UK, considering constraints imposed by biodiversity conservation priorities. We focused on those energy sources that have the potential to make important energy contributions but which might conflict with biodiversity conservation objectives. These included field-scale solar, bioenergy crops, wind energy (both onshore and offshore), wave and tidal stream energy. The spatially-explicit analysis considered the potential opportunity available for each technology, at various levels of ecological risk. The resultant maps highlight the energy resource available, physical and policy constraints to deployment, and ecological sensitivity (based on the distribution of protected areas and sensitive species). If the technologies are restricted to areas which currently appear not to have significant ecological constraints, the total potential energy output from these energy sources was estimated to be in the region of 5,547 TWh/yr. This would be sufficient to meet projected energy demand in the UK, and help to achieve carbon reduction targets. However, we highlight two important caveats. First, further ecological monitoring and surveillance is required to improve understanding of wildlife distributions and therefore potential impacts of utilising these energy sources. This is likely to reduce the total energy available, especially at sea. Second, some of the technologies under investigation are currently not deployed commercially. Consequently this potential energy will only be available if continued effort is put into developing these energy sources/technologies, to enable realisation of their full potential.

Colonial breeding is widespread among animals. Some, such as eusocial insects, may use agonistic behavior to partition available foraging habitat into mutually exclusive territories; others, such as breeding seabirds, do not. We found that northern gannets, satellite-tracked from 12 neighboring colonies, nonetheless forage in largely mutually exclusive areas and that these colony-specific home ranges are determined by density-dependent competition. This segregation may be enhanced by individual-level public information transfer, leading to cultural evolution and divergence among colonies.

Purpose: To review the clinical presentations, risk factors, medical and surgical management, and outcomes of patients with Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK)., Methods: Retrospective review of laboratory and medical records of all patients suspected of having AK from January 1999 through May 2008 at Cole Eye Institute., Results: Twenty-nine eyes of 26 patients were identified as having either culture- or tissue-proven AK or presumed AK based on clinical examination and complete response to full course of treatment. The most common risk factors identified for AK were history of contact lens wear (89.7%) and exposure to contaminated water (27.6%). Clinical presentations included early AK (superficial disease) in 37.9% of eyes or late AK (deep stromal disease with or without epithelial disease) in 62.1% of eyes. All early AK cases had best-corrected visual acuity of 20/30 or better at last follow-up, whereas only 55.6% of late AK cases achieved 20/30 or better. Eight eyes underwent penetrating keratoplasty. One patient demonstrated viable-appearing cysts in the corneal button, despite 15 months of maximum medical treatment and 5 months off all medical treatments. Over the nearly 10-year period, there was no significant increase in the number of cases seen each year., Conclusions: The most common risk factor for AK continues to be contact lens wear. AK requires prolonged and intense treatment, although good final visual acuity can be achieved. Potentially viable Acanthamoeba cysts can still persist in a noninflamed cornea after extensive medical therapy, supporting the practice that corneal transplantation after presumably resolved cases of AK should be followed with vigilance to detect the earliest signs of recurrent disease.

The authors report the successful use of Descemet's stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) to treat a 45-year-old woman with amantadine-associated corneal edema. Discontinuation of the medication and treatment with corticosteroids did not result in resolution of the edema. The patient underwent sequential phakic DSAEK in both eyes with significant anatomic, visual, and functional improvement. Histopathologic analysis of Descemet's membrane by light microscopy revealed a paucity of endothelial cells. This case highlights the importance of considering amantadine toxicity in the differential diagnosis of corneal edema without an identifiable ocular cause and suggests the utility of DSAEK in the treatment of this rare condition., (Copyright 2010, SLACK Incorporated.)

Purpose: To describe the clinical features of 3 patients with amantadine-associated corneal edema, including the histopathologic findings from 1 patient who underwent corneal transplantation for irreversible corneal edema., Design: Interventional case series., Participants: Three patients who sought treatment at the authors' institution with abrupt-onset, bilateral, diffuse corneal edema associated with systemic amantadine use., Methods: Retrospective chart review., Main Outcome Measures: Visual acuity, corneal thickness, slit-lamp observations, and histopathologic findings., Results: The duration of use of amantadine ranged from 2 months to 6 years before onset of corneal edema. Discontinuation of amantadine resulted in resolution of corneal edema in both eyes of 2 patients. A third patient underwent a full-thickness corneal transplantation, and subsequently, edema developed in the grafted cornea. Cessation of amantadine therapy in this patient resulted in resolution of corneal edema in both eyes, but the ungrafted corneal eventually decompensated and became edematous, requiring corneal transplantation. Histopathologic analysis of the cornea buttons showed significant loss of endothelial cells., Conclusions: Amantadine can cause corneal edema that begins a few months to several years after institution of therapy, and the edema can occur even in a corneal graft. Prolonged corneal edema in the setting of amantadine use can be irreversible. In cases of corneal edema without an obvious causative disease, the systemic medication list of the patient must be reviewed, and amantadine must be considered as a possible cause.

Cataract surgery has evolved into an outpatient procedure that requires minimal anesthesia and significantly improves visual function for about 90% of patients. With the help of their primary care physician and ophthalmologist, patients can decide when cataract surgery is appropriate for them. In addition, patients may have a choice about the type of synthetic lens implant that fits their visual needs.

There is extensive literature on avian mortality due to collision with man-made structures, including wind turbines, communication masts, tall buildings and windows, power lines, and fences. Many studies describe the consequences of bird-strike rather than address the causes, and there is little data based on long-term, standardized, and systematic assessments. Despite these limitations, it is apparent that bird-strike is a significant cause of mortality. It is therefore important to understand the effects of this mortality on bird populations. The factors which determine avian collision risk are described, including location, structural attributes, such as height and the use of lighting, weather conditions, and bird morphology and behavior. The results of incidental and more systematic observations of bird-strike due to a range of structures are presented and the implications of collision mortality for bird populations, particularly those of scarce and threatened species susceptible to collisions, are discussed. Existing measures for reducing collision mortality are described, both generally and specifically for each type of structure. It is concluded that, in some circumstances, collision mortality can adversely affect bird populations, and that greater effort is needed to derive accurate estimates of mortality levels locally, regionally, and nationally to better assess impacts on avian populations. Priority areas for future work are suggested, including further development of remote technology to monitor collisions, research into the causes of bird-strike, and the design of new, effective mitigation measures.

Purpose: To describe a case of anterior scleritis in a patient with stiff-person syndrome., Methods: Case report., Results: A 55-year-old woman with stable stiff-person syndrome and off immunomodulatory therapy developed unilateral anterior scleritis, which resolved over three weeks with systemic nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory therapy., Conclusions: The authors are unaware of reports regarding the association of scleritis with stiff-person syndrome.

Purpose: To report a patient with superficial hypertrophic dendritic epitheliopathy that occurred in 1 eye after keratoplasty and in the other eye that had not undergone previous corneal transplantation. In both eyes, the epitheliopathy recurred even after subsequent penetrating keratoplasties., Methods: Case report., Results: A patient with chronic eyelid and ocular surface disease secondary to psoriasis was monitored over a 17-year period. During this time, the patient developed a superficial hypertrophic dendritic epitheliopathy of the left eye 3 years after corneal transplantation. In the right eye, which had not undergone a penetrating keratoplasty, the patient was also noted to have a superficial hypertrophic dendritic epitheliopathy that changed morphologies over the ensuing 5.5 years. Both eyes subsequently required penetrating keratoplasties for decreased vision secondary to subepithelial scarring. After surgery, both corneas suffered recurrences of the superficial hypertrophic epitheliopathy., Conclusion: In addition to the original findings that superficial hypertrophic dendritic epitheliopathy occurs in postkeratoplasty eyes, this condition can also occur in corneas that have not been transplanted previously. The morphology of these lesions can vary.

Purpose: We studied a case of postoperative coagulase-negative Staphylococcus endophthalmitis in a 79-year-old man who had undergone cataract extraction in which vancomycin had been used intraoperatively in the infusion fluid., Methods: The medical records were reviewed for the clinical history, ocular findings, and the vitreous and anterior chamber culture results., Results: Acute, postoperative coagulase-negative Staphylococcus endophthalmitis developed in the patient in whom vancomycin had been used intraoperatively in the infusion fluid., Conclusions: Restraint is urged in the prophylactic use of vancomycin in the infusion fluids.

While the chances of corneal decompensation following lens implantation are low, they are greater than in nonimplant cataract surgery and increase with the passage of time postoperatively. All the factors leading to corneal decompensation are not known, but available evidence suggests the most significant is trauma at the time of surgery. The likelihood of corneal decompensation can be limited by careful patient selection and surgical techniques and by appropriate management of postoperative complications. In the event of irreversible corneal decompensation, penetrating keratoplasty, with or without removal of the implant lens, offers a substantial chance of visual rehabilitation.

The search for an ideal intraocular irrigating solution is of paramount importance to te ophthalmic surgeon. An intraocular irrigating solution, as well as surgical technique, can have deleterious effects on ocular tissues. Since an intraocular irrigating solution comes in contact with the cornea, lens, trabecular meshwork, uvea, vitreous, and retina, and ideal irrigant would be ome that ensures biological function for all of these tissues. In a practical sense, the best irrigant is one that causes the least possible damage to the structural integrity and function of the intraocular environment. This paper summarizes the development, uses, and efficacy of intraocular irrigating solutions as currently used during intraocular surgery.

Thirty-three eyes of 25 patients with previously unrelieved recurrent erosion syndrome were treated with soft contact lenses. Marked improvement was obtained in 16 cases, moderate in 6, and 11 patients showed no improvement. Patients with visible anterior membrane dystrophies and spontaneous recurrent erosion syndrome responded best. Patients with posttraumatic recurrent erosion syndrome and with recurrent erosion syndrome and with recurrent erosion syndrome associated with aphakic corneal edema did poorly. In addition to having less frequent episodes of stabbing pain, those patients who were improved also had less minor irritation and some had improved vision.

Masked controlled rabbit studies were done to determine the toxic effects on corneal wound healing of the antiviral ointments 0.5% idoxuridine, 3% Ara A, and 3% acyclovir, and the antiviral drops 0.1% idoxuridine, 3% Ara AMP, and 1% trifluridine. Ara A, acyclovir, trifluridine and idoxuridine drops had no significant effects on the rate of closure of epithelial wounds. Idoxuridine ointment given 5 times a day significantly retarded the rate of epithelial wound closure, but not when given 4 times a day. Only Ara AMP caused a retardation of epithelial healing and an actual increase in the defect after 4 days of treatment. Histopathologically all drugs, except acyclovir, showed a toxic effect on the regenerating epithelium. All drugs, except acyclovir, showed retarded stromal wound healing with reduced bursting strength and collagen content. Ara AMP had increased bursting strength and collagen content possibly because of greater inflammation. Acyclovir, in comparison to all the other medications studied, appeared to have minimal to no toxic effects on experimental epithelial and stromal wound healing, and on this basis is the agent of choice for use in herpes simplex stromal keratitis with ulceration and as a prophylactic agent for long-term use after penetrating keratoplasty.

Five patients developed corneal edema presumably caused by accidental preoperative ocular exposure to Hibiclens. In all cases, the patients complained of ocular pain after surgery. Conjunctival inflammation and corneal epithelial defects were found in all patients. Between two and ten weeks after exposure, stromal and epithelial edema, with a predilection for the inferior cornea initially, developed in all patients. The corneal edema resolved in three patients in approximately six months, leaving mild stromal scarring and reduced endothelial cell counts. The corneal edema in the other two patients progressed to diffuse bullous keratopathy, which eventually required penetrating keratoplasty. We recommend that Hibiclens be avoided in preoperative preparation of the facial skin to prevent accidental ocular exposure.

Acanthamoeba keratitis is becoming an increasingly well-known clinical entity. The Acanthamoeba species in their encysted state are resistant to antimicrobial agents, resulting in corneal infections that are refractory to medical therapy. Corneal cryotherapy has been used to treat Acanthamoeba keratitis with varying and equivocal success. We subjected trophozoites and cysts of two species of Acanthamoeba recovered from corneal infections to trials of in vitro freeze-thaw-refreeze cryotherapeutic methods. The trophozoites of both species were killed in all trials. However, the cysts of both species survived all trials. Cryotherapy may not be an effective means to eliminate Acanthamoeba cysts from the cornea.

In three patients (three men, 44, 67, and 83 years old) an unusual keratopathy characterized by white, branching, crystalline stromal opacities produced lesions that were insidious, that increased in size slowly, and that were clinically and histopathologically associated with little corneal inflammation. Intraocular inflammation eventually became evident in two of the patients. The keratopathy developed while the patients were using topical corticosteroids. In two cases, histopathologic studies disclosed accumulations of gram-positive cocci in the corneal stroma; a viridans streptococcus agent was isolated on culture. In one case, the viridans streptococcus was determined to be a dextran producer, which may have contributed to the pathogenesis of the keratopathy. Despite aggressive treatment with a variety of drugs, epithelial healing, and resolution of the corneal infiltrate, residual scarring persisted in two cases and neovascularization and graft edema in one case each.

Comparative evaluation of the corneal endothelium with the Heyer-Schulte specular photomicroscope, the McIntyre CEB reticle affixed to a slitlamp, and a slitlamp alone found the reticle-slitlamp combination to give results within a 10% average of endothelial cell counts determined with the specular microscope. The reticle also compared favorably in time and cost savings. All three methods of corneal evaluation were effective for observation of polymegathism. Because of its lower magnification, the slitlamp without the reticle was best suited for evaluation of cornea guttata.

Members of the genus Acanthamoeba are increasingly recognized as agents of indolent, chronic, infectious keratitis. Recently, Acanthamoeba corneal infection has been reported in some persons who wear soft contact lenses. In this study, three "heat" and three "cold" soft contact lens disinfection systems were tested according to the manufacturers' instructions against Acanthamoeba castellanii and Acanthamoeba polyphaga in separate trials, and with appropriate controls. Suspensions of Acanthamoeba cysts or trophozoites of each species were tested individually. Each of the three heat disinfection units killed all acanthamoebae in one cycle in all trials. A chlorhexidine 0.005%/thimerosal 0.001% solution killed A. castellanii trophozoites and cysts, but those of A. polyphaga survived. Trophozoites and cysts of both species survived an alkyl triethanol ammonium chloride 0.013%/thimerosal 0.002% solution and a hydrogen peroxide 3% preparation. Heat disinfection overall appears to be more effective in killing Acanthamoeba trophozoites and cysts as compared to cold disinfection methods.

Therapy of acute Herpes simplex keratitis in rabbits with idoxuridine-releasing ocular inserts showed that an application rate of 30mug/hr gave significantly better results than conventional treatment with idoxuridine drops and ointment while exposing the eye to 40% less drug. Delivery rates lower than this were equal or not as effective as drop and ointment therapy and rates up to 100 mug/hr did not produce significantly better results than rates of 30mug/hr. Serial viral cultures demonstrated the persistence of virus beyond the period of clinical resolution of disease in all treatment groups, indicating that therapy should be continued longer than apparent resolution of disease.

The outlook for keratoplasty in herpetic keratitis has improved significantly over the past decade. While only two out of three grafts in vascularized and regrafted eyes and in eyes with active disease are clear after two years, in quiet eyes with no significant vascularization, the success rate exceeds 80 percent. The significant factor in the improved results, in both favorable and unfavorable cases, is the improvement in surgical technique, involving the operating microscope, the 10-0 nylon suture, and the increased understanding of the pathophysiology of corneal grafting, which has resulted in more sophisticated postoperative care. In our experience, the routine use of high levels of topical steroids in the immediate postoperative period, followed by a rapid tapering of these medications, has been particularly successful.

Ligneous conjunctivitis is a rare, usually bilateral, chronic membranous conjunctivitis, which begins acutely in childhood and persists for many years. In view of the poor results obtained with other forms of therapy in the past, the resection of the involved conjunctiva and tarsus with the grafting of donor sclera is offered as another alternative in the management of this distressing condition.

It has been demonstrated in clinical trials that (1) the antimetabolites Ara A and F3T are both significantly better than IDU in the treatment of many forms of ocular herpes, and (2) they are not significantly different from each other. In preclinical trials, the IDU ocular insert also has shown itself to be significantly better than IDU drop-ointment therapy, while exposing the eye to 40 percent less drug and adding tremendous convenience and ease of compliance by patients to an otherwise difficult medication schedule. Both photodynamic inactivation and cryotherapy have been shown in clinical trials to have notable therapeutic efficacy against herpes, but undesirable and occasionally severe side-effects have slowed down and possibly stopped the further development of these techniques.

Intraocular lens implantation has been developing over the past 15 years in Europe and is now becoming popular in the United States. Lens materials and designs as well as surgical techniques are still being evaluated. The overall results are excellent, with a small increase in complications being the price paid for a dramatic increase in visual rehabilitation.
