This article discusses a comparison of the two focal primary school third-grade Korean bilingual students' language use with their previous language use when they were first-graders by examining their heritage language (HL) use at a Korean language school. For children of immigrant families in the U.S., there has been a pervasive hypothesis that their heritage language (HL) might be jeopardized due to their minimum exposure to it and its reduced status in the U.S., which can easily lead them to experience HL shift or loss (Montrul, 2018; Valde´s, 2014). However, the present study shows that the focal third graders who were attending all-English schools during the week did not appear to lose their HL. Instead, the comparison of findings indicated that they had developed a certain degree of oral proficiency in their HL, including vocabulary knowledge, thanks to the parents' involvement and practices towards their children's HL learning as well as other socio-cultural influences on the students' HL language use and development over the years.

AbstractEmploying the Third Space as a theoretical framework, the present study explores how the teacher and transnational students co-constructed a transformative Third Space in their fifth-grade Korean heritage language classroom. The teacher implemented transnational literacy practices and transformative pedagogy by embracing the students’ linguistic hybridity and cultural diversity from their dynamic transnational lifeworld. The findings reveal that transnationally inclusive literature works as a great medium and a powerful pedagogical tool for the students in utilizing their transnational funds of knowledge, incorporating translanguaging, and (re)constructing their multifarious identities. The fluid classroom discourses during their literature discussions provided possibilities and opportunities for the Third Space to be established and developed in the classroom as a hybrid, transformative, and democratic learning space. This study provides educators and researchers insights into the unique ways that both teachers and students can collaboratively create Third Spaces in learning contexts to offer hybrid, transformational, and democratic educational experiences. Using Border Pedagogy (Giroux, H. 2005. Border Crossings: Cultural Workers and the Politics of Education. New York, NY: Routledge.) as a guiding lens, this study examines the third-grade Korean American students' responses to multicultural children's literature that illustrates different kinds of borders (i.e. racial, religious, linguistic, and physical). 14 different multicultural children's picture books (Asian, Hispanic, European, and African) are introduced to the Korean students from transnational families in a Korean heritage language school in the U.S. throughout the semester. The findings present that the students' responses during book discussions showed that using multicultural children's literature supported the value of facilitating their border crossing. The findings provide implications for educators that using multicultural children's picture books can be an influential pedagogical instrument to provide experiences of crossing borders between cultures of themselves and others. This border crossing perspective can potentially help the students construct their own cultures, experiences, and histories to better understand those of others. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This qualitative study utilized sociocultural and heteroglossic perspectives to examine the oral translanguaging practices of four Korean-American first-graders in a Korean heritage language (HL) classroom. The research method was discourse analysis. The students attended all-English American schools during the school week and a Korean HL school on Saturdays. All four students drew from their integrated linguistic resources to translanguage for sociolinguistic, metalinguistic, metacognitive, and sociocultural purposes. The three students who preferred English and who had older siblings translanguaged more and for a wider range of translanguaging practices than the student who preferred Korean and who had a younger sibling.

An ideal hydrogel for stem cell therapy would be injectable and efficiently promote stem cell proliferation and differentiation in body. Herein, an injectable, single‐component hydrogel with hyaluronic acid (HA) modified with phenylboronic acid (PBA) and spermidine (SM) is introduced. The resulting HAps (HA‐PBA‐SM) hydrogel is based on the reversible crosslinking between the diol and the ionized PBA, which is stabilized by the SM. It has a shear‐thinning property, enabling its injection through a syringe to form a stable hydrogel inside the body. In addition, HAps hydrogel undergoes a post‐injection "self‐curing," which stiffens the hydrogel over time. This property allows the HAps hydrogel to meet the physical requirements for stem cell therapy in rigid tissues, such as bone, while maintaining injectability. The hydrogel enabled favorable proliferation of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) and promoted their differentiation and mineralization. After the injection of hMSCs‐containing HAps into a rat femoral defect model, efficient osteogenic differentiation of hMSCs and bone regeneration is observed. The study demonstrates that simple cationic modification of PBA‐based hydrogel enabled efficient gelation with shear‐thinning and self‐curing properties, and it would be highly useful for stem cell therapy and in vivo bone regeneration. This qualitative study employed a discourse analysis methodology to compare Korean bilingual students in first and third grades by examining different functions and forms of translanguaging in Korean heritage language (HL) classrooms in the U.S. By identifying linguistic functions and forms of each translanguaging occurrence, the study presents that the bilingual students engaged in translanguaging practices in support of their meaning- and sense-making processes. Overall, six translanguaging functions were commonly identified by the first and third graders, but different forms of translanguaging are presented in each grade in support of the functions. The comparison findings from constant comparative analyzes display that the older graders employed translanguaging in more varied forms and for more various purposes than the younger graders because they recognized when to use which language by regulating a higher level of their cognitive thinking skills. As a result, the third graders' translanguaging performance appears to be more strategic and sophisticated than its use by the younger graders. Using the transactional theory (Rosenblatt, 1995, 2001) and translanguaging pedagogy (García, 2009) as guiding lenses, this study explores how 1st-grade Korean-English bilingual students engage in storytelling and meaning construction using two languages when they encounter one of the chosen wordless picturebooks. The findings indicate that although visualizing is the main strategy to create the plot from the wordless picturebook, the students incorporate other reading comprehension strategies (i.e. using prior knowledge, making connections, predicting, revising and verifying their predictions, and inferencing) to construct the meaning of the story. Since storylines are delivered through illustrations only in wordless picturebooks, the bilingual students flexibly translanguage by deploying their linguistic resources from both languages during their story creation. The findings imply that using wordless picturebooks can be an influential pedagogical instrument to help bilingual students employ a broader language repertoire in their oral narrative production so that their responses from different perspectives and experiences are valued during literary activities in the classroom. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a complex autoimmune disease with multiorgan manifestations, including pleuropulmonary involvement (20–90%). The precise mechanism of pleuropulmonary involvement in SLE is not well-understood; however, systemic type 1 interferons, circulating immune complexes, and neutrophils seem to play essential roles. There are eight types of pleuropulmonary involvement: lupus pleuritis, pleural effusion, acute lupus pneumonitis, shrinking lung syndrome, interstitial lung disease, diffuse alveolar hemorrhage (DAH), pulmonary arterial hypertension, and pulmonary embolism. DAH has a high mortality rate (68–75%). The diagnostic tools for pleuropulmonary involvement in SLE include chest X-ray (CXR), computed tomography (CT), pulmonary function tests (PFT), bronchoalveolar lavage, biopsy, technetium-99m hexamethylprophylene amine oxime perfusion scan, and (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography. An approach for detecting pleuropulmonary involvement in SLE includes high-resolution CT, CXR, and PFT. Little is known about specific therapies for pleuropulmonary involvement in SLE. However, immunosuppressive therapies such as corticosteroids and cyclophosphamide are generally used. Rituximab has also been successfully used in three of the eight pleuropulmonary involvement forms: lupus pleuritis, acute lupus pneumonitis, and shrinking lung syndrome. Pleuropulmonary manifestations are part of the clinical criteria for SLE diagnosis. However, no review article has focused on the involvement of pleuropulmonary disease in SLE. Organic–inorganic hybrid perovskites are widely utilized in solar driven chemistry such as photocatalysis, hydrogen evolution, and oxygen reduction. Hybrid perovskites contain various components with high polarity and/or charge values, which undergo transformations due to ion exchange, photoinduced phase segregation, or ion migration. These variable characteristics make perovskites "soft materials". Meanwhile, optoelectronic devices often operate under electrochemical reactions in the presence of an electrical field. To examine the effect of this field on the material/photophysical properties of hybrid perovskites, hybrid FAPbBr3 (FA+: CH(NH2)2+) perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) were synthesized. In this study, we report the spectroelectrochemical investigation of the hybrid FAPbBr3 PQDs to understand the electrochemical stability and degradation process. We also found that the electrochemical condition played an important role in inducing defect-mediated oxidation/reduction reactions, changing the photophysical properties of hybrid PQDs, and causing their irreversible transformations to various lead halide plumbate complexes. Making high-quality raw materials is the key to open the versatile potential of next generation materials. All-inorganic CsPbX3 (X: Cl−, Br−, and/or I−) perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) have been applied in various optoelectronic devices, such as photocatalysis, hydrogen evolution, solar cells, and light-emitting diodes, due to their outstanding photophysical properties, such as high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), absorption cross-section, efficient charge separation, and so on. Specifically, for further improvement of the PLQY of the PQDs, it is essential to diminish the non-radiative charge recombination processes. In this work, we approached two ways to control the non-radiative charge recombination processes through synthetic and post-synthetic processes. Firstly, we proposed how refinement of the conventional recrystallization process for PbI2 contributes to higher PLQY of the PQDs. Secondly, after halide exchange from CsPbI3 PQDs to CsPbBr3, through an in situ spectroelectrochemical setup, we monitored the positive correlation between bromide deposition of on the surface of the perovskite and photoluminescence improvement of the CsPbBr3 perovskite film through electrodeposition. These two strategies could provide a way to enhance the photophysical properties of the perovskites for application to various perovskite-based optoelectronic devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In modern society, high-quality material development and a large stable supply are key to perform frontier research and development. However, there are negative issues to address to utilize high-quality resources with a large stable supply for research, such as economic accessibility, commercialization, and so on. One of the cutting-edge research fields, perovskite-related research, usually requires high-quality chemicals with outstanding purity (>99%). We developed an economically feasible PbI2 precursor with around 1/20 cost-down for perovskite/perovskite quantum dots through recrystallization and/or hydrothermal purification. Following the methodology, the quantum dots from both as-prepared and purified PbI2 demonstrated identical photophysical properties, with a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 52.61% using the purified PbI2 vs. 45.83% PLQY using commercial PbI2. The role of hydrothermal energy was also checked against the problematic PbI2, and we checked whether the hydrothermal energy could contribute to the hindrance of undesired particle formation in the precursor solution, which enables them to form enlarged grain size from 179 ± 80 to 255 ± 130 nm for higher photoconversion efficiency of perovskite solar cells from 14.77 ± 1.82% to 15.18 ± 1.92%.
