Purpose: The use of e-cigarettes can worsen mental health symptoms in young adults. However, little is known about how young adults' mental health may relate to their reasons for using e-cigarettes (vaping). We examined the association of mental health and vaping reasons among young adults who currently vape. Methods: Data were analyzed from a sample of young adults who vape (N = 436, Mage=25.19) who participated in an online survey assessing mental health (stress, anxiety, and depression) and vaping reasons (vape for tension reduction or relaxation, user experience, product or substance, or utility). We conducted multiple regressions and ANCOVAs, controlling for age, gender, past 30-day e-cigarette use, and past 30-day cigarette smoking. Results: Experiencing higher levels of stress, anxiety, and depression were associated with vaping for tension reduction or relaxation among young adults who vape (ps < 0.001) and for those who dual use e-cigarettes and cigarettes (ps < 0.01). Experiencing severe anxiety level was associated with vaping for tension reduction or relaxation than among those experiencing minimal, mild or moderate anxiety (ps < 0.05). Conclusions: Findings show that higher stress, anxiety, and depression are associated with greater likelihood of vaping for tension reduction or relaxation. More research should examine the association of stress, anxiety, and depression on vaping in young adults to identify and determine appropriate interventions to help with vaping cessation. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify more detailed use behaviors and motivations for same-day co-use of tobacco and cannabis among U.S. young adults, compared to previous literature on co-use. Methods: We conducted an online cross-sectional survey among N = 303 U.S. young adults (ages 18–30, mean 25.9) during February 2024 through Prolific. The questions included co-use behaviors of tobacco and cannabis within the same day, and motivations for tobacco, cannabis, and their co-use. Using R, paired two-sample t-tests were used to compare mean differences of separate motivations to use measures for cannabis and tobacco among participants with same day co-use. Results: Among participants who reported past-30-day co-use of tobacco and cannabis (n = 176), a majority (94%; n = 160) reported same-day co-use. Participants who engaged in same-day co-use (n = 160) reported craving nicotine (60%), craving cannabis (54%), and feeling stressed (49%) as reasons for co-use. Among participants who engaged in same-day co-use, motivations for using cannabis (vs. tobacco) were higher for the level of effect, satisfying feeling, control over how much used, time to feel the effect, liking, purity, price, variety of product, amount to feel the effect, feeling less judged (p's < 0.024), and motivations for using tobacco (vs. cannabis) were higher for convenience, when feeling angry, and when feeling uncomfortable or upset (p's < 0.044). Conclusions: Findings show that young adults may be co-using tobacco and cannabis on the same day due to cravings for both substances and stress and yet have different motivations for using cannabis and tobacco. Taking inspiration from diverse interlocking and adhesion structures found in nature, a biaxially interlocking interface is developed in this work. This interface is formed by interconnecting two electrostatically flocked substrates and its mechanical strength is enhanced through the incorporation of enoki‐mushroom‐shaped microfibers and deposited extracellular matrix (ECM). Tips of flocked straight fibers can be transformed into mushroom shapes through thermal treatment. The tensile strength of interlocked scaffolds with mushroom‐shaped tips drastically increases when compared to scaffolds made of straight fibers, which is not reported previously. More cells proliferate within interlocked scaffolds with mushroom‐shaped tips than scaffolds with straight fibers. Additionally, the mechanical strength (e.g., compressive, tensile, and shear) of cell‐seeded interlocked scaffolds increases proportionally to the amount of ECM deposited by dermal fibroblasts. The biaxially interlocking interface developed in this study holds promise for applications in engineering interfacial tissues, modeling tissue interfaces, investigating tissue–tissue interactions, and facilitating tissue bridging or binding. Background: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is the cornerstone intervention for cardiac arrest, with extracorporeal CPR (ECPR) demonstrating enhanced survival and neurologic outcomes in in‐hospital cardiac arrest. This study explores the time interval between CPR initiation and the onset of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in ECPR recipients, investigating its impact on survival outcomes. Methods: This retrospective analysis included 1950 adults who received CPR at a single medical center between March 2019 and April 2023. Data from 198 adult patients who had ECMO inserted during CPR were analyzed. The interval from CPR initiation to ECMO initiation was quantified and categorized as ≤20, 20–40, and >40 min. Cox regression analysis assessed associations between CPR‐to‐ECMO time and short‐ and long‐term mortalities. Results: Among the 198 patients who underwent ECPR, 116 (58.6%) experienced 30‐day mortality. Initiation of ECMO within 20 min occurred in 46 (23.2%), whereas 74 (37.4%) had ECMO initiated after 40 min. Cox regression revealed a significant association between time from CPR to ECMO initiation and 30‐day mortality (adjusted hazard ratio [HR]: 2.20 in >40 min, HR: 2.63 in 20–40 min, p = 0.006) and 6‐month mortality (HR: 1.81, in >40 min, HR: 1.99 in 20–40 min, p = 0.021). Conclusions: This study revealed that, in ECPR recipients, a shorter duration between CPR initiation and ECMO flow commencement is associated with improved short‐ and long‐term patient prognoses. How families function plays a central role in individuals' self-management of Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and prediabetes (preDM; Baig et al., 2015; Lee et al., 2017; Rintala et al., 2013). [...], Introduction: How families function and provide support plays a central role in patients&apos; self-management of Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and prediabetes (preDM). Families would benefit from communication training, which is rarely incorporated into diabetes self-management education (DSME). Mothers are especially in need of this support. Women are at a higher risk of T2DM, and when mothers are patients, they can prioritize their family role and family&apos;s well-being over their personal needs as a patient. Method: To identify family communication that affects mothers&apos; ability to self-manage T2DM/preDM, we interviewed 17 mothers aged 36-64 (M = 56). Transcripts were thematically analyzed. Results: Women described four family communication experiences affecting self-care: (a) family-of-origin communication (e.g., weight/diet messages during childhood), (b) communal coping communication (e.g., adopting healthy behaviors as a family), (c) communication inhibiting communal coping (e.g., negative response to mothers&apos; lifestyle changes), and (d) mothers taking the lead (e.g., leading conversations or communicating control over family&apos;s lifestyle decisions). Discussion: Findings highlight the need for a family systems approach to DSME. Communication from multiple bonds (e.g., spouse, children) and past family-of-origin experiences impact self-care. Communal coping (appraising diabetes as "our" problem) was critical to self-management as mothers struggled to balance their needs with family members&apos; preferences/attitudes. When not supported, mothers who took the lead communicatively could facilitate communal coping or prioritize self-care needs. Findings can inform a family-centered approach to DSME that highlights the importance of communal coping, provides all members communication skills training, and addresses the need for mothers to prioritize personal well-being. Public Significant Statement This study illustrates how family communication (across relationships and generations) is central to mothers&apos; ability to self-manage T2DM or pre-DM, demonstrating the need for diabetes self-management education to be family-centered. Mothers struggle to balance their own disease management needs with the preferences of their family members with regard to diet and exercise habits. When families communally cope together, mothers&apos; ability to manage T2DM/pre-DM is enhanced. When families do not cope together, it is important that mothers take the lead in making lifestyle changes they need to promote better disease management. Orthotospovirus tomatomaculae (tomato spotted wilt virus, TSWV) is transmitted by the western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis. Epoxyoctadecamonoenoic acids (EpOMEs) function as immune-suppressive factors, particularly in insects infected by viral pathogens. These oxylipins are produced by cytochrome P450 monooxygenases (CYPs) and are degraded by soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH). In this study, we tested the hypothesis that TSWV modulates the EpOME level in the thrips to suppress antiviral responses and enhance its replication. TSWV infection significantly elevated both 9,10-EpOME and 12,13-EpOME levels. Following TSWV infection, the larvae displayed apoptosis in the midgut along with the upregulated expression of four caspase genes. However, the addition of EpOME to the viral treatment notably reduced apoptosis and downregulated caspase gene expressions, which led to a marked increase in TSWV titers. The CYP and sEH genes of F. occidentalis were identified, and their expression manipulation using RNA interference (RNAi) treatments led to significant alternations in the insect's immune responses and TSWV viral titers. To ascertain which viral factor influences the host EpOME levels, specialized RNAi treatments targeting genes encoded by TSWV were administered to larvae infected with TSWV. These treatments demonstrated that NSS expression is pivotal in manipulating the genes involved in EpOME metabolism. These results indicate that NSs of TSWV are crucially linked with the elevation of host insect EpOME levels and play a key role in suppressing the antiviral responses of F. occidentalis. Older adults living in a community are looking for alternative and complementary methods to improve their healthy longevity and quality of life. This study aimed to examine the effects of the Qigong therapy on psychological well-being, physical health state, sleep state, and life satisfaction of older adults living in community. This study used a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design. The study samples were 69 older adults (intervention, n = 34; control, n = 35) over 65 years old in community in South Korea. Qigong therapy was performed 50 minutes per session, twice a week for a total of 20 times over a 10-week period in a comfortable and quiet environment without external noise. Measures were the study participant's general characteristics survey, psychological well-being scale, Cornell Medical Index—Korean version, sleep scale, and life satisfaction scale standardized for the elderly. Effects of Qigong therapy according to interaction effect over time and the group showed statistically significant differences in psychological well-being, physical health state, sleep state, and life satisfaction. This study suggests that Qigong therapy was an effective nursing intervention for improving the psychological well-being, physical health state, sleep state, and life satisfaction of older adults living in community. Background and Objective: Lung transplantation is the only life-extending therapy for end-stage pulmonary disease patients, but its risks necessitate an understanding of outcome predictors, with the frailty index and nutritional status being key assessment tools. This study aims to evaluate the relationship between preoperative frailty and nutritional indexes and the postoperative mortality rate in patients receiving lung transplants, and to determine which measure is a more potent predictor of outcomes. Materials and Methods: This study reviewed 185 adults who received lung transplants at a single medical center between January 2013 and May 2023. We primarily focused on postoperative 7-year overall survival. Other outcomes measured were short-term mortalities, acute rejection, kidney complications, infections, and re-transplantation. We compared the predictive abilities of preoperative nutritional and frailty indicators for survival using receiver operating characteristic curve analysis and identified factors affecting survival through regression analyses. Results: There were no significant differences in preoperative nutritional indicators between survivors and non-survivors. However, preoperative frailty indicators did differ significantly between these groups. Multivariate analysis revealed that the American Society of Anesthesiologists Class V, clinical frailty scale, and Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) were key predictors of 7-year overall survival. Of these, the CCI had the strongest predictive ability with an area under the curve of 0.755, followed by the modified frailty index at 0.731. Conclusions: Our study indicates that for critically ill patients undergoing lung transplantation, frailty indexes derived from preoperative patient history and functional autonomy are more effective in forecasting postoperative outcomes, including survival, than indexes related to preoperative nutritional status. This study developed and validated a machine learning model to accurately predict acute kidney injury (AKI) after non-cardiac surgery, aiming to improve patient outcomes by assessing its clinical feasibility and generalizability. We conducted a retrospective cohort study using data from 76,032 adults who underwent non-cardiac surgery at a single tertiary medical center between March 2019 and February 2021, and used data from 5512 patients from the VitalDB open dataset for external model validation. The predictive variables for model training consisted of demographic, preoperative laboratory, and intraoperative data, including calculated statistical values such as the minimum, maximum, and mean intraoperative blood pressure. When predicting postoperative AKI, our gradient boosting machine model incorporating all the variables achieved the best results, with AUROC values of 0.868 and 0.757 for the internal and external validations using the VitalDB dataset, respectively. The model using intraoperative data performed best in internal validation, while the model with preoperative data excelled in external validation. In this study, we developed a predictive model for postoperative AKI in adult patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery using preoperative and intraoperative data, and external validation demonstrated the efficacy of open datasets for generalization in medical artificial modeling research. Accidents on gas pipelines cause significant damage to the national economy and the economy of the state. Thus, it is necessary to always be prepared for such situations in order to restore the normal operation of the gas pipeline as soon as possible. An important role is played by the execution time of the control actions to localize the accident, pump out the gas, and change the operating modes. It is essential that such control be undertaken, especially if such a situation occurs near a gas-measuring installation for measuring the amount of vented gas. Therefore, the control actions must be error-free in order to quickly stop the non-stationary process, which can lead to undesirable consequences. The paper presents a mathematical model of the operation of the pipeline, developed for the management of the pipeline in an emergency. The analysis of the problem of the occurrence of accidents was carried out, and the effect of liquid on its walls was modeled when the operating mode of the pipeline changed. An example is presented using a numerical model carried out in ANSYS, as well as being analyzed analytically. The results of the calculations are presented, and special attention is paid to the parameters influencing the change in the operating mode of the pipeline.

Pralidoxime chloride, a highly hydrophilic antidote, cannot be effectively separated by reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC), unless the mobile-phase composition is varied. However, the use of ion-pairing reagents for pralidoxime separation is hindered by the persistent contamination of the stationary phase or chromatography system inside the HPLC system. Thus, this study aimed to develop a simple, rapid, and robust method based on RP-HPLC to determine pralidoxime chloride in antidote autoinjectors using a chaotropic salt as the mobile-phase additive. The use of UV detection at 270 nm allowed for the simultaneous detection of pralidoxime chloride and the internal standard, pyridine-2-aldoxime. The addition of chaotropic salts (NaPF6, NaBF4, and NaClO4) and an ionic liquid ([EMIM]PF6) increased the retention time of pralidoxime chloride. Among them, NaPF6 exhibited the highest capacity factor in the reverse-phase C18 column. Increasing the salt concentration increased the capacity factor and the number of theoretical plates. Analytical method validation was performed to assess the linearity, accuracy, precision, recovery, and repeatability, according to the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety guidelines. Additionally, this newly developed method exhibits an adequate separation capability, making it a potential substitute for the current method employed in the United States/Korean Pharmacopoeia, and it ensures the necessary durability to maintain the robustness and reliability of the analytical system. Introduction We examined the impact of financial disclosures and warning labels on pro-e-cigarette Instagram posts and their association with attitudes toward the ad and product among youth and young adults. Methods During March to May 2021, we conducted a factorial experiment using an online convenience sample of youth and young adults (N = 1687, M age = 21.54). Participants were randomized to one of four conditions: pro-e-cigarette Instagram posts with only a financial disclosure, only a warning label, both a financial disclosure + warning label, or no financial disclosure or warning label. After viewing the posts, participants answered questions regarding their attitude toward the ad and the product. We used one-way ANOVA to estimate the association of condition on outcomes controlling for demographics. Results Young adults who viewed Instagram posts with only a financial disclosure reported more positive attitudes toward the ad than those who viewed posts with both a financial disclosure + warning label (p <.05). Young adults who viewed posts with only a financial disclosure reported more positive attitudes toward the product than those who viewed posts with only a warning label, both a financial disclosure + warning label, and without either (p s <.05). Differences were not statistically significant for youth. E-cigarette use status was associated with increased positive attitudes toward the ad (p <.001) and product (p <.001) for all participants. Conclusions Our results can inform policy interventions to mitigate the effects of e-cigarette social media marketing among youth and young adults. Including financial disclosures may not decrease appeal of e-cigarettes compared to posts without either. Implications Findings from the study suggest that a warning label may be more effective in reducing the effects of pro-e-cigarette social media posts than a financial disclosure among young adults. Public health officials should examine additional strategies beyond financial disclosures and warning labels (eg, social media peer mentoring program) to offset the persuasive effects of pro-e-cigarette social media marketing posts on young people. An important part of regenerative endodontic procedures involving immature permanent teeth is the regeneration of the pulp–dentin complex with continuous root development. Hydraulic calcium silicate cements (HCSCs) are introduced for the pulpal treatment of immature permanent teeth. The stem-cell-derived secretome recently has been applied for the treatment of various damaged tissues. Here, we evaluated the biocompatibility and osteogenic differentiation of HCSCs combined with secretome on human dental pulp stem cells. In the Cell Counting Kit-8 test and wound healing assays, significantly higher cell viability was observed with secretome application. In alkaline phosphatase analysis, the activity was significantly higher with secretome application in all groups, except for RetroMTA on day 2 and Endocem MTA Premixed on day 4. In an Alizarin Red S staining analysis, all groups with secretome application had significantly higher staining values. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction results showed that the day 7 expression of OSX significantly increased with secretome application in all groups. SMAD1 and DSPP expression also increased significantly with secretome addition in all groups except for Biodentine. In conclusion, HCSCs showed favorable biocompatibility and osteogenic ability and are predicted to demonstrate greater synergy with the addition of secretome during regenerative endodontic procedures involving immature permanent teeth. Background: In the U.S., 9.3% of young adults currently vape. However, little is known about how vaping identity (i.e., internalizing vaping as an important part of oneself) can influence young adults' e-cigarette perceptions. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between vaping identity and e-cigarette perceptions among young adults. Methods: Young adults who vape (N = 252, Mage = 24.7) were recruited to participate in an online survey assessing a trusted source of health information, e-cigarette harm perceptions, and intentions to abstain from vaping. We estimated associations between vaping identity on outcomes and the interaction of vaping identity and combustible cigarette use on outcomes. Results: Participants with higher vaping identity reported lower trust in government health agencies and a doctor, and higher trust in the tobacco industry and e-cigarette industry (ps < 0.05). Those with higher vaping identity also reported lower e-cigarette harm perceptions and intentions to abstain from vaping (ps < 0.05). Conclusions: Findings show that higher vaping identity is associated with greater trust in the tobacco industry, lower trust in health experts, lower e-cigarette harm perceptions, and lower intentions to abstain from using e-cigarettes. This suggests that efforts to reduce vaping among young adults may need to leverage messages that reduce the credibility of the tobacco industry and prevent nonsmoking young adults from developing a vaping identity.
