Windthrow (i.e., trees broken and uprooted by wind) is a major natural disturbance in Amazon forests. Images from medium-resolution optical satellites combined with extensive field data have allowed researchers to assess patterns of windthrow tree-mortality and to monitor forest recovery over decades of succession in different regions. Although satellites with high spatial-resolution have become available in the last decade, they have not yet been employed for the quantification of windthrow tree-mortality. Here, we address how increasing the spatial resolution of satellites affects plot-to-landscape estimates of windthrow tree-mortality. We combined forest inventory data with Landsat 8 (30 m pixel), Sentinel 2 (10 m), and WorldView 2 (2 m) imagery over an old-growth forest in the Central Amazon that was disturbed by a single windthrow event in November 2015. Remote sensing estimates of windthrow tree-mortality were produced from Spectral Mixture Analysis and evaluated with forest inventory data (i.e., ground true) by using Generalized Linear Models. Field measured windthrow tree-mortality (3 transects and 30 subplots) crossing the entire disturbance gradient was 26.9 ± 11.1% (mean ± 95% CI). Although the three satellites produced reliable and statistically similar estimates (from 26.5% to 30.3%, p < 0.001), Landsat 8 had the most accurate results and efficiently captured field-observed variations in windthrow tree-mortality across the entire gradient of disturbance (Sentinel 2 and WorldView 2 produced the second and third best results, respectively). As expected, mean-associated uncertainties decreased systematically with increasing spatial resolution (i.e., from Landsat 8 to Sentinel 2 and WorldView 2). However, the overall quality of model fits showed the opposite pattern. We suggest that this reflects the influence of a relatively minor disturbance, such as defoliation and crown damage, and the fast growth of natural regeneration, which were not measured in the field nor can be captured by coarser resolution imagery. Our results validate the reliability of Landsat imagery for assessing plot-to-landscape patterns of windthrow tree-mortality in dense and heterogeneous tropical forests. Satellites with high spatial resolution can improve estimates of windthrow severity by allowing the quantification of crown damage and mortality of lower canopy and understory trees. However, this requires the validation of remote sensing metrics using field data at compatible scales.

With current observations and future projections of more intense and frequent droughts in the tropics, understanding the impact that extensive dry periods may have on tree and ecosystem-level transpiration and concurrent carbon uptake has become increasingly important. Here, we investigate paired soil and tree water extraction dynamics in an old-growth upland forest in central Amazonia during the 2018 dry season. Tree water use was assessed via radial patterns of sap flow in eight dominant canopy trees, each a different species with a range in diameter, height, and wood density. Paired multi-sensor soil moisture probes used to quantify volumetric water content dynamics and soil water extraction within the upper 100 cm were installed adjacent to six of those trees. To link depth-specific water extraction patterns to root distribution, fine root biomass was assessed through the soil profile to 235 cm. To scale tree water use to the plot level (stand transpiration), basal area was measured for all trees within a 5 m radius around each soil moisture probe. The sensitivity of tree transpiration to reduced precipitation varied by tree, with some increasing and some decreasing in water use during the dry period. Tree-level water use scaled with sapwood area, from 11 to 190 L per day. Stand level water use, based on multiple plots encompassing sap flow and adjacent trees, varied from ∼1.7 to 3.3 mm per day, increasing linearly with plot basal area. Soil water extraction was dependent on root biomass, which was dense at the surface (i.e., 45% in the upper 5 cm) and declined dramatically with depth. As the dry season progressed and the upper soil dried, soil water extraction shifted to deeper levels and model projections suggest that much of the water used during the month-long dry-down could be extracted from the upper 2-3 m. Results indicate variation in rates of soil water extraction across the research area and, temporally, through the soil profile. These results provide key information on whole-tree contributions to transpiration by canopy trees as water availability changes. In addition, information on simultaneous stand level dynamics of soil water extraction that can inform mechanistic models that project tropical forest response to drought.

The Cerrado has high plant and vertebrate diversity and is an important biome for conserving species and provisioning ecosystem services. Volume equations in this biome are scarce because of their size and physiognomic diversity. This study was conducted to develop specific volumetric models for the phytophysiognomies Gallery Forest, Dry Forest, Forest Savannah, and Savannah Woodland, a generic model and a model for Cerrado forest formation. Twelve 10 m × 10 m (100 m²) (National Forest Inventory) plots were used for each phytophysiognomy at different sites (regions) of the Federal District (FD) where trees had a diameter at breast height (DBH; 1.30 m) ≥5 cm in forest formations and a diameter at base height (Db; 0.30 m) ≥5 cm in savanna formations. Their diameters and heights were measured, they were cut and cubed, and the volume of each tree was obtained according to the Smalian methodology. Linear and nonlinear models were adjusted. Criteria for the selection of models were determined using correlation coefficients, the standard error of the estimates, and a graphical analysis of the residues. They were later validated by the chi-square test. The resultant models indicated that fit by specific phytophysiognomy was ideal; however, the generic and forest formation models exhibited similar performance to specific models and could be used in extensive areas of the Cerrado, where they represent a high potential for generalization. In the forests of Amazonia each year, previously unentered stands are logged, which usually results in some degree of soil compaction. Consequently, the soil chemical properties in compacted areas are altered. The aim of this study was to determine how these changes may help or hinder site recovery in the context of seasonal variation and increased levels of compaction. To investigate these changes, an experiment was established in the Central Amazon. This consisted of tractor trails compacted at three incrementally increasing traffic intensities of one, three, and twelve machine cycles in the wet and dry seasons. Results revealed that elevated moisture in the wet season combined with heavy compaction from twelve machine cycles had the greatest impact on soil chemical properties. This was indicated by diminished total nitrogen, organic carbon, available phosphorus, cation exchange capacity, and elevated ammonium and Fe2+. Nevertheless, heavy compaction in the wet season led to lower Al3+ and higher base saturation, which could be beneficial for future site recovery. Study Implications: Annually, vast swathes of old-growth forest are logged for the first time in Amazonia. These areas require an extensive skid trail network to facilitate movement of logging machinery and subsequent log skidding. Skid trails always entail some level of soil compaction, especially in the heavily used primary skid trails. This compaction influences the soil chemical properties. Some impacts are only apparent in the wet season and may not be present in the dry season. Therefore, to reduce overall impacts to soil chemical properties, skid trail coverage should be planned to reduce the coverage of the logging site. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Forest phytophysiognomies have specific spatial patterns that can be mapped or translated into spectral patterns of vegetation. Regions of spectral similarity can be classified by reference to color, tonality or intensity of brightness, reflectance, texture, size, shape, neighborhood influence, etc. We evaluated the power of accuracy of supervised classification algorithms via per-pixel (maximum likelihood) and geographic object-based image analysis (GEOBIA) for distinguishing spectral patterns of the vegetation in the northern Brazilian Amazon. A total of 280 training samples (70%) and 120 validation samples (30%) of each of the 11 vegetation cover and land-use classes (N = 4400) were classified based on differences in their visible (RGB), near-infrared (NIR), and medium infrared (SWIR 1 or MIR) Landsat 8 (OLI) bands. Classification by pixels achieved a greater accuracy (Kappa = 0.75%) than GEOBIA (Kappa = 0.72%). GEOBIA, however, offers a greater plasticity and the possibility of calibrating the spectral rules associated with vegetation indices and spatial parameters. We conclude that both methods enabled precision spectral separations (0.45–1.65 μm), contributing to the distinctions between forest phytophysiognomies and land uses—strategic factors in the planning and management of natural resources in protected areas in the Amazon region. Aim: Water availability is the major driver of tropical forest structure and dynamics. Most research has focused on the impacts of climatic water availability, whereas remarkably little is known about the influence of water table depth and excess soil water on forest processes. Nevertheless, given that plants take up water from the soil, the impacts of climatic water supply on plants are likely to be modulated by soil water conditions. Location: Lowland Amazonian forests. Time period: 1971–2019. Methods: We used 344 long‐term inventory plots distributed across Amazonia to analyse the effects of long‐term climatic and edaphic water supply on forest functioning. We modelled forest structure and dynamics as a function of climatic, soil‐water and edaphic properties. Results: Water supplied by both precipitation and groundwater affects forest structure and dynamics, but in different ways. Forests with a shallow water table (depth <5 m) had 18% less above‐ground woody productivity and 23% less biomass stock than forests with a deep water table. Forests in drier climates (maximum cumulative water deficit < −160 mm) had 21% less productivity and 24% less biomass than those in wetter climates. Productivity was affected by the interaction between climatic water deficit and water table depth. On average, in drier climates the forests with a shallow water table had lower productivity than those with a deep water table, with this difference decreasing within wet climates, where lower productivity was confined to a very shallow water table. Main conclusions: We show that the two extremes of water availability (excess and deficit) both reduce productivity in Amazon upland (terra‐firme) forests. Biomass and productivity across Amazonia respond not simply to regional climate, but rather to its interaction with water table conditions, exhibiting high local differentiation. Our study disentangles the relative contribution of those factors, helping to improve understanding of the functioning of tropical ecosystems and how they are likely to respond to climate change. Tropical forests play a critical role in the global carbon cycle, storing 40–55 % of terrestrial plant carbon and significantly contributing to primary productivity. However, uncertainties persist in estimating carbon stocks and fluxes, exhibiting variation across the Neotropics, Africa, and Asia tropical forest regions. Despite hosting some of the most densely sampled forests, significant uncertainties persist in biomass and forest carbon stock estimates in the Neotropics. Although the Southwestern Amazon (SWA) forests span over 20 million hectares, no specific biomass or above- and below-ground carbon model has been calibrated for this region thus far. In our study, we conducted direct forest inventories in the SWA to address the following question: Do the allometric patterns, biomass, and carbon stocks observed in the Southwestern Amazon differ from those found in other regions of the Amazon or Pantropical? Our research reveals substantial differences in water and carbon content, biomass stocks, above- and below-ground oven-dry biomass ratios, and allometric patterns between SWA forests and other Amazonian and Pantropical forests. We have demonstrated that these differences result in overestimations of forest biomass when applying allometric equations developed for other Amazonian and Pantropical regions to the open forests of Southwestern Amazonia. This overestimation can reach up to 37 % when using equations from the eastern Amazon, and between 26 % and 46 % depending on the applied Pantropical equation. The use of an inappropriate factor for the root-to-shoot ratio in the Southwestern Amazon (SWA) can lead to overestimates of belowground oven-dry biomass by up to 20 %. To reduce uncertainties related to estimates of forest carbon stock and flux in Neotropical forests, it is necessary to enhance the density of direct biomass measurements, particularly in southwestern Amazonia. • Improvement of tropical forest carbon stock estimates depends on increasing the direct biomass measurements. • We developed the first set of allometric equations for Southwestern Amazon (SWA) Forests. • The allometric patterns of the forests of the SWA are distinct from the Pantropical regions. • Equations derived from other regions may overestimate SWA forest biomass by up to 46 %. • Our results fill a significant gap in biomass estimation for SWA Forests. In the forests of the Amazon Basin, there are still few studies on soil compaction caused by logging activities. This study evaluated an operation located on the property of a timber company in Central Amazonia, which uses harvesting techniques based on the harvesting system developed by the Centre for Agricultural Research in Suriname. The timber-extraction method employed by the timber company consists of three activities: (1) skid trail construction with a track-type tractor, (2) log winching with a winch attached to the tractor, and (3) log skidding with a rubber-tired skidder. Soil bulk density and soil penetration resistance were quantified to 20 cm in depth. After a single tractor ingress and egress for trail construction, the soil incurred an increased root growth-limiting bulk density and penetration resistance. However, log winching did not cause significant soil compaction. The conclusions of the study were: (1) the greatest impact from this harvesting system came from the skid trail construction, (2) the technique of log winching limited forest floor compaction and disturbance that damages forest regeneration, and (3) log skidding during dry soil conditions limited increases in compaction and track formation. Abstract: Precise estimation of biomass at a regional scale is required for evaluating forest carbon stocks throughout the Amazon. We examined six types of allometric models to identify the best estimator of biomass in primary forests (terra firme) in the northwestern sector of the Brazilian Amazon. We also tested six regression models for estimating tree height. We developed each allometric model using measurements of 101 trees excavated in a primary forest distributed along the upper Rio Negro. A simple power function with stem diameter at breast height D as a single variable was selected as the best model for estimating each biomass component, i.e. above-ground total mass AGW, below-ground total mass BGW, and whole individual mass. Among models developed to estimate tree height H from D, we selected a regression model with a coefficient corresponding to an asymptotic height as the best fit. The D–AGW relationship at our study site differed significantly from models developed previously for other regions of the Amazon. We explain this regional variation in part by regional differences in D–H relationships of sample trees. The D–BGW relationship at our site also differed significantly from that in the central Amazon. However, AGW–BGW relationships were consistent between the upper Rio Negro forest and other forests in the central Amazon, in that the BGW–AGW ratio was constant as 0.136 regardless of tree size. On the basis of D-based allometry and census data from 23 plots established in the upper Rio Negro region, we estimated a stand-level total biomass (dry mass) of 252.6Mgha−1. This estimate is at least 73% lower than the potential stand biomass for the region previously suggested by several meta-analyses. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Each year, thousands of km2 of humid tropical forest are logged in the Brazilian Amazon. Many of these areas are underlain by clay soils dominated by non-expansive kaolinite. Logging operations often entail the use of heavy machinery to drag logs through the forest on skid trails, which causes substantial soil disturbance. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate if soil recovery occurs over time in the studied Ferralsol. The hypothesis is that soil recovery has indeed occurred and that the trend of recovery is observable. In this endeavor, a chronosequence was established composed of four logging units that were logged 13, 19, 23, and 26 years ago, as well as a control in undisturbed old-growth forest. Samples in the upper topsoil were collected for soil bulk density (BD), fine root biomass (FRB) and various soil chemical properties. Results indicated a sequential recovery. Prior to the study period of 13–26 years after logging operations, FRB recovered. The predicted recovery of the cation exchange capacity was at approximately 15 years, which was followed by soil organic carbon at 20 years. Lastly, BD was recovered within 25 years. Overall, soil organic carbon demonstrated the greatest associations with recovery variables as it accumulated over time. Although surface soils in skid trails did indeed recover, it was a lengthy process that occurred over several decades. Most of the planet's diversity is concentrated in the tropics, which includes many regions undergoing rapid climate change. Yet, while climate-induced biodiversity changes are widely documented elsewhere, few studies have addressed this issue for lowland tropical ecosystems. Here we investigate whether the floristic and functional composition of intact lowland Amazonian forests have been changing by evaluating records from 106 long-term inventory plots spanning 30 years. We analyse three traits that have been hypothesized to respond to different environmental drivers (increase in moisture stress and atmospheric CO 2 concentrations): maximum tree size, biogeographic water-deficit affiliation and wood density. Tree communities have become increasingly dominated by large-statured taxa, but to date there has been no detectable change in mean wood density or water deficit affiliation at the community level, despite most forest plots having experienced an intensification of the dry season. However, among newly recruited trees, dry-affiliated genera have become more abundant, while the mortality of wet-affiliated genera has increased in those plots where the dry season has intensified most. Thus, a slow shift to a more dry-affiliated Amazonia is underway, with changes in compositional dynamics (recruits and mortality) consistent with climate-change drivers, but yet to significantly impact whole-community composition. The Amazon observational record suggests that the increase in atmospheric CO 2 is driving a shift within tree communities to large-statured species and that climate changes to date will impact forest composition, but long generation times of tropical trees mean that biodiversity change is lagging behind climate change., (© 2018 The Authors.
