Mesoporous spherical cerium oxide@reduced graphene oxide (CeO2@RGO) and mesoporous spherical cerium oxide@multi-walled carbon nanotube (CeO2@MWCNT) nanocomposites were synthesized through facile hydrothermal and annealing processes, respectively. The CeO2@RGO nanocomposites (60 mg, 30 wt%), with a thickness of merely 1.39 mm, show an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 6.46 GHz and a minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of −55.03 dB at 13.03 GHz (1.39 mm). Furthermore, the CeO2@MWCNT (100 mg, 30 wt%) nanocomposites show an EAB of 6.51 GHz at 1.77 mm and a RLmin surpassing −35.00 dB at 4.66 mm. The as-prepared nanocomposites were significantly better than those of previous reports. CeO2@RGO and CeO2@MWCNTs effectively enhance the electromagnetic parameters to improve the impedance match. Meanwhile, the three-dimensional conductive structure formed by the mesoporous spherical CeO2@RGO and CeO2@MWCNTs provided many reflection paths and improved the interfacial polarization and conduction loss. Considering the complex construction processes involved, there are significant risks during the construction of long-span cantilever casting arch bridges. In this study, a risk assessment method for the construction process of cantilever casting concrete arch bridges was developed. The compositional elements and characteristics of safety risks in the construction of cantilever casting concrete arch bridges were clarified, and a safety risk source list that includes seven major risk sources and thirty-three minor risk sources was formed. Then, a Bayesian model for the risk analysis of cantilever casting concrete arch bridge construction was established, and a method was proposed to determine the prior and posterior probabilities of the Bayesian network using triangular fuzzy numbers. This method fully utilizes the experience of experts while avoiding the subjectivity of expert opinions. A cantilever casting concrete open spandrel arch bridge (Bridge A) with a total span length of 287 m was taken as an example, and a safety risk assessment was conducted during its construction process. The calculation results show that the construction safety risk level of Bridge A was level III. We propose a humidity sensor using an excessively tilted fiber grating (Ex-TFG) coated with agarose fabricated using femtosecond laser processing. The processed grating showcases remarkable differentiation between TE and TM modes, achieving an exceptionally narrow bandwidth of approximately 1.5 nm and an impressive modulation depth of up to 15 dB for both modes. We exposed the agarose-coated TFG sensor to various relative humidity levels and monitored the resonance wavelength to test its humidity sensing capability. Our findings demonstrated that the sensor exhibited a rapid response time (2–4 s) and showed a high response sensitivity (18.5 pm/%RH) between the humidity changes and the resonant wavelength shifts. The high sensitivity, linearity, repeatability, low hysteresis, and excellent long-term stability of the TFG humidity sensor, as demonstrated in our experimental results, make it an attractive option for environmental monitoring or biomedical diagnosis. Nanomechanical resonators made from suspended graphene combine the properties of ultracompactness and ultrahigh detection sensitivity, making them interesting devices for sensing applications. However, nanomechanical systems can be affected by membrane stress. The present work developed an optomechanical resonator for thermal stress sensing. The proposed resonator consists of a section of hollow core fiber (HCF) and a trampoline graphene–Au membrane. An all-optical system that integrated optical excitation and optical detection was applied. Then, the resonance frequency of the resonator was obtained through this all-optical system. In addition, this system and the resonator were used to detect the membrane's built-in stress, which depended on the ambient temperature, by monitoring the resonance frequency shift. The results verified that the temperature-induced thermal effect had a significant impact on membrane stress. Temperature sensitivities of 2.2646 kHz/°C and 2.3212 kHz/°C were obtained when the temperature rose and fell, respectively. An all-fiber glucose sensor is proposed and demonstrated based on a helical intermediate-period fiber grating (HIPFG) produced by using a hydrogen/oxygen flame heating method. The HIPFG, with a grating length of 1.7 cm and a period of 35 μm, presents four sets of double dips with low insertion losses and strong coupling strengths in the transmission spectrum. The HIPFG possesses an averaged refractive index (RI) sensitivity of 213.6 nm/RIU nm/RIU in the RI range of 1.33–1.36 and a highest RI sensitivity of 472 nm/RIU at RI of 1.395. In addition, the HIPFG is demonstrated with a low-temperature sensitivity of 3.67 pm/°C, which promises a self-temperature compensation in glucose detection. In the glucose-sensing test, the HIPFG sensor manifests a detection sensitivity of 0.026 nm/(mg/mL) and a limit of detection (LOD) of 1 mg/mL. Moreover, the HIPFG sensor exhibits good stability in 2 h, indicating its capacity for long-time detection. The properties of easy fabrication, high flexibility, insensitivity to temperature, and good stability of the proposed HIPFG endow it with a promising potential for long-term and compact biosensors. It is increasingly appreciated that steroid hormones such as aldosterone and estradiol can mediate important cardiovascular effects. Many of these effects occur over a time course not consistent with the genomic actions of these hormones acting through classical nuclear receptors / transcription factors. Further, multiple receptors have been implicated in mediating these rapid effects of both aldosterone and estradiol, including a newly appreciated G-protein-coupled receptor, GPR30. In previous studies we demonstrated that both aldosterone and estradiol mediate contraction in vascular smooth muscle cells, as assessed in single cell assays. However, the receptor mechanisms underlying these effects remained unclear. Therefore, we studied the actions of estradiol and aldosterone on rat aortic vascular smooth muscle cells. Both aldosterone and estradiol mediated a concentration-dependent increase in contraction, as assessed in substrate deformation assays with E[C.sub.50]s in the range of nanomoles per litre. These effects paralleled increased myosin light chain phosphorylation. The effects of aldosterone were inhibited by the mineralocorticoid selective antagonist eplerenone. Further, aldosterone's contractile effects were enhanced by increased expression of the mineralocorticoid receptor. The contractile effects of estradiol were inhibited by estrogen receptor (ER)-selective antagonists, tamoxifen, and ICI 182780, as well as eplerenone. Further, estradiol's effects were enhanced by the increased expression of both ERα and the mineralocorticoid receptor (MR). To assess the potential role of GPR30 in mediating the effects of aldosterone and estradiol, GPR30 was re-introduced, since these cells lose endogenous GPR30 expression in culture. Re-expression of GPR30 enhanced both estradiol- and aldosterone-mediated contraction. These studies demonstrate that in rat aortic vascular smooth muscle cells, both aldosterone and estradiol mediate vascular smooth muscle contraction and that these effects can be mediated by MR, ERα, and by GPR30. On comprend de plus en plus que des hormones steroidiennes comme l'aldosterone et l'oetradiol peuvent induire des effets cardiovasculaires importants. Un grand nombre de ces effets se produisent pendant une periode qui ne respectent pas les actions genomiques de ces hormones qui agissent par le biais des recepteurs nucleaires/facteurs de transcription classiques. De plus, de multiples recepteurs ont ete impliques dans la mediation de ces effets rapides de l'aldosterone et de l'oestradiol, dont un nouveau recepteur couple a la proteine G (GRP30). Dans des etudes anterieures, des essais sur cellules isolees ont demontre que l'aldosterone et l'oestradiol medient la contraction dans les cellules musculaires lisses vasculaires. Toutefois, les mecanismes des recepteurs a l'origine de ces effets demeurent obscurs. Par consequent, nous avons examine les actions de l'oestradiol et de l'aldosterone sur des cellules musculaires lisses vasculaires de l'aorte de rats. Tant l'aldosterone que l'oestradiol ont medie l'augmentation concentration-dependante de la contraction, comme demontre dans des essais de deformation du substrat avec des CE50 dans la plage du nanomoles par litre. Ces effets ont coincide avec l'augmentation de la phosphorylation de la chaine legere de myosine. Les effets de l'aldosterone ont ete inhibes par l'antagoniste selectif des mineralocorticoides, eplerenone. De plus, les effets contractiles de l'aldosterone ont ete stimules par l'expression accrue du recepteur des mineralocorticoides (RM). Les effets contractiles de l'oestradiol ont ete inhibes par les antagonistes selectifs du recepteur d'oestrogenes (RE), tamoxifene et ICI 182780, mais aussi par l'eplerenone. Par ailleurs, ses effets ont ete stimules par l'expression accrue de Era et du RM. Pour evaluer le role potentiel de GPR30 dans la mediation des effets de l'al dosterone et de l'oestradiol, nous avons reintroduit GPR30, puisque, en culture, ces cellules perdent l'expression de la GPR30 endogene. La reexpression de GPR30 a stimule tant la contraction mediee par l'stradiol que celle mediee par l'aldosterone. Ces etudes demontrent que, dans les cellules musculaires lisses vasculaires de l'aorte de rats, l'aldosterone et l'stradiol induisent une contraction du muscle lisse vasculaire et que ces effets peuvent etre medies par RM, Era et GPR30. The increasing concern for decarbonization and sustainability in construction materials is calling for green binders to partially replace cement since its production is responsible for approximately 8% of global anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. Supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), including fly ash, slag, silica fume, etc., can be used as a partial replacement for ordinary Portland cement (OPC) owing to reduced carbon dioxide emissions associated with OPC production. This study aims to investigate the sustainable use of waste oyster shell powder (OSP)-lithium slag (LS)-ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) ternary SCM system in green concrete. The effect of ternary SCMs to OPC ratio (0%, 10%, 20%, and 30%) on compressive strength and permeability of the green concrete were studied. The reaction products of the concrete containing OSP-LS-GGBFS SCM system were characterized by SEM and thermogravimetric analyses. The results obtained from this study revealed that the compressive strength of concrete mixed with ternary SCMs are improved compared with the reference specimens. The OSP-LS-GGBFS ternary SCMs-based mortars exhibited a lower porosity and permeability compared to the control specimens. However, when the substitution rate was 30%, the two parameters showed a decline. In addition, the samples incorporating ternary SCMs had a more refined pore structure and lower permeability than that of specimens adding OSP alone. In order to control energy consumption and reduce pollution, the use of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) instead of cement to produce green cementitious materials can save energy, reduce emissions and achieve sustainable development. This study demonstrates the possibility of developing SCMs with iron tailings (IOTs), fly ash (FA) and ceramic powder (CP) ternary system, as well as the optimization and improvement scheme of gelation activation. The effects of activator dosage, mix ratio and substitution rate on mechanical properties of ternary SCMs system were investigated. The formation and evolution of hydration products were analyzed by differential thermogravimetric analysis (DTA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results of the study show that there is synergy in the system. The results show that there is synergy in the system and the hydration reaction is sufficient. At the substitution rate of 30%, the doping ratio of IOTs, CP and FA is 1:2:2 and the Ca(OH)2 is 0.6%, the strength reaches 39.9 MPa and the activity index is 91.5%, which can provide a basis for the application and more in-depth study of IOTs multi SCMs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As cement manufacturing accounts for 8% of global CO2 emissions, there is an urgent need to tackle the environmental impacts of cement production and address the decarbonization of construction materials. Adopting supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), including fly ash, slag, silica fume, etc., can be used as a partial replacement for ordinary Portland cement (OPC) to reduce CO2 emissions related to the OPC industry, while providing benefits for waste valorization. This study aims to explore the sustainable utilization of a waste oyster shell powder (OSP)–lithium slag (LS)–ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) ternary SCM system in green concrete. The effect of OSP fineness on compressive strength, hydration products, pore structure, and transport properties in ternary SCM-based mortars was studied using a wide array of experimental techniques, including thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis, Mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), the water absorption test and the rapid chloride penetration test (RCPT). The results revealed that the concrete with the ternary SCMs showed equivalent compressive strength compared to reference specimens. The water absorption and chloride ion charge of the RCPT in the concrete containing the ternary SCMs decreased by up to 30% and 81.4%, respectively. It was observed that the specimens incorporating the OSP with a mesh size of 3000 exhibited the highest compressive strength and the most refined microstructure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A considerable amount of carbon dioxide is released during the preparation of traditional Portland cement, which is not in conformity with the sustainable road. Developing supplementary cementitious material (SCMs) and reducing cement consumption are safe ways to solve this problem. Iron tailings (IOTs), a type of mining waste from the beneficiation process of iron ore concentrate, can be used as SCMs in concrete. In order to tackle the problem of low compressive performance of IOTs as SCMs in concrete, this study develops a multi-SCMs system based on IOTs. Mechanical properties and microstructure of samples with different activator contents and ratios were analyzed by compressive strength, differential thermal–thermal gravimetric analysis (DTA-TG), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results show that the compressive strength of the composite gel blocks in different gel systems changed as follows: ternary SCMs system > binary SCMs system > unary SCMs system. The ternary SCMs system (IOTs: Steel slag(SS):Phosphorus slag(PS) = 1:2:2) without activator was added so that it resulted in the highest compressive strength in multi-SCMs system. With the increase in the content of activators, the compressive strength with ternary SCMs system shows a decreasing trend. It is well known from DTA-TG, as well as SEM, that NaOH and Na2SiO3 have an inhibitory effect on the secondary hydration reaction and inhibit the formation of C-S-H gel. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Diesel engines are important for heavy-duty vehicles. However, particulate matter (PM) released from diesel exhaust should be eliminated. Nowadays, catalytic diesel particulate filters (CDPF) are recognized as a promising technology. In this work, a series of monolith Mn1−nKnCo2O4 catalysts were prepared by the simple citric acid method. The as-prepared catalysts displayed good catalytic performance for soot combustion and the Mn0.7K0.3Co2O4 catalyst gave the best catalytic performance among all the prepared samples. The T10 and Tm of Mn0.7K0.3Co2O4-HC catalyst for soot combustion are 310 and 439 °C, respectively. The physical and chemical properties of catalysts were characterized by means of SEM, XPS, H2-TPR, Raman and other techniques. The characterization results indicate that K substitution is favorable for the formation of oxygen vacancies, enhancing the mobility of active oxygen species, and improving the redox properties and so on. In-situ Raman results prove that the strength of Co-O bonds in the catalysts became weak during the reaction at high temperatures. In addition, SEM and ultrasonic test results show that the peeling rate of the coat-layer is less than 5%. The as-prepared catalysts can be taken as one kind of candidate catalyst for promising application in soot combustion because of its facile synthesis, low cost and high catalytic activity. A three-parameter sensor based on a point-by-point fiber Bragg grating (PBP-FBG) is proposed. The fabricated sensor is 40 mm long. The spectrum loss at 1336.15 nm is selected to measure the surrounding liquid level. The sensitivity for liquid level sensing is −0.046 dB/mm. The temperature is measured using the Bragg dip shifts with sensitivity of 10.06 pm/ °C. The cut-off mode shift is used to measure the surrounding refractive index with sensitivity of 535.14 nm/RIU. As a benefit of femtosecond laser direct inscription fabrication, the grating length is controllable and the liquid level sensing range is expandable. Background: Chinese materia medica processing is a distinguished and unique pharmaceutical technique in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) used for reducing side effects, and increasing or even changing therapeutic efficacy of the raw herbs.Changes in the essential components induced by an optimized processing procedure are primarily responsible for the increased efficacy of medicinal plants.The kidney-yang invigorating effect of rice wine-steamed Cistancha deserticola (C. deserticola) was stronger than raw C. deserticola (CD). Methods: A comparison analysis was carried out using the UPLC-Q-TOF-MSE with the UNIFI informatics platform to determine the influence of processing. In vitro studies were performed for the characterization of constituents as well as metabolites in vivo. The chemical components were determined in CD and its processed products. The multivariate statistical analyses were conducted to evaluate variations between them while OPLS-DA was used for pairwise comparison. Results: The results of this study revealed considerable variations in phenylethanoid glycosides (PhGs) and iridoids after processing. A total of 97 compounds were detected in the extracts of CD and its processed product. PhGs having 4'-O-caffeoyl group in the 8-O-β-d-glucopyranosyl part, like acteoside, cistanoside C, campneoside II, osmanthuside decreased after being processed, while PhGs with 6'-O-caffeoyl group in the 8-O-β-d-glucopyranosyl part, such as isoacetoside, isocistanoside C, isocampneoside I, isomartynoside increased, especially in the CD-NP group. The intensity of echinacoside and cistanoside B whose structure possess 6'-O-β-d-glucopyranosyl moiety also increased. In in vivo study, 10 prototype components and 44 metabolites were detected in rat plasma, feces, and urine. The obtained results revealed that processing leads to the considerable variation in the chemical constituents of CD and affected the disposition of the compounds in vivo, and phase II metabolic processes are the key cascades of each compound and most of the metabolites are associated with echinacoside or acteoside. Conclusions: This is the first global comparison research of raw and processed CD. Volumetric, sub-micron to micron level resolution imaging is necessary to assay phenotypes or characteristics at the sub-cellular/organelle scale. However, three-dimensional fluorescence imaging of cells is typically low throughput or compromises on the achievable resolution in space and time. Here, we capitalise on the flow control capabilities of microfluidics and combine it with microoptics to integrate light-sheet based imaging directly into a microfluidic chip. Our optofluidic system flows suspended cells through a sub-micrometer thick light-sheet formed using micro-optical components that are cast directly in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). This design ensures accurate alignment, drift-free operation, and easy integration with conventional microfluidics, while providing sufficient spatial resolution, optical sectioning and volumetric data acquisition. We demonstrate imaging rates of 120 ms per cell at sub-μm resolution, that allow extraction of complex cellular phenotypes, exemplified by imaging of cell clusters, receptor distribution, and the analysis of endosomal size changes. The desert-dwelling Cistanche herb was first recorded in the "Shen Nong Herbal Classic" and is listed as the top-grade herbal medicine in this publication. The Chinese Pharmacopoeia records that pieces of Cistanche deserticola (CD) and rice wine-steamed Cistanche deserticola (WCD) can be used in the clinic as the main types of decoctions. After being steamed with rice wine, the antiaging and tonifying kidney-yang effects are enhanced. In this study, we detected the chemical content of CD and WCD and the pharmacological mechanism of invigorating kidney-yang deficiency in model rats. Aim. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of CD and WCD on the neuroendocrine-immune function of kidney-yang deficiency in glucocorticoid-overdosed model rats. Materials and methods. Sprague Dawley (SD) rats were selected. The rats were subcutaneously injected with corticosterone water suspension for the glucocorticoid-overdosed model rats. The positive control rats were gavaged with Jinkuishenqi pills and high-, medium-, and low-dose CD/WCD suspensions (1.646 g/(kg day), 5.48 g/(kg day), 2.74 g/(kg day), and 1.37 g/(kg day), respectively); the blank control (BC) and model control (MC) groups were given the same volume of distilled water as those in the drug group for 40 consecutive days at a dose of 1 mL/100 g. After the last administration, the blood was collected from the abdominal aorta, and serum levels of T, CRH, ACTH, CORT, cortisol, IL-10, IL-6, IL-2, TNF-α, and IFN-γ were measured. Organ indexes of the thymus gland and the spleen were calculated. The expression of Bax, Bcl-2, caspase-3, Fas, and FasL in the adrenal gland was measured by immunohistochemistry. The pathological changes in the thymus gland and the adrenal gland were observed by HE staining (×200). T lymphocyte subsets in peripheral blood were detected by flow cytometry, and the expression of CaM mRNA in the hypothalamus and hypophysis tissues was also measured by RT-PCR. Results. Compared with the MC group, the CD and WCD groups exhibited increases in activity, the organ index of the thymus and the spleen, the serum levels of T, CRH, ACTH, CORT, cortisol, IL-2, and IL-10, the ratio of CD4+/CD8+, and the expression of Bcl-2, caspase-3, Fas, FasL, and CaM in the hypophysis tissue. The CD and WCD groups also exhibited reductions in the IL-6, TNF-α, and IFN-γ levels in serum and the expression of CaM mRNA in the hypothalamus. Conclusions. Each dose of CD and WCD could counteract the dysregulated sex hormone and immune factors in glucocorticoid-overdosed model rats, enhancing and restoring the effect of the hypothalamic nerve cells and improving immune function. At present, there is an increasing incidence and mortality of liver cancer. Despite surgery and chemoradiotherapy, there is a lack of effective oral medications with low side effects. In East Asia, Coicis Semen (CS) is used as both food and natural medicine and has a significant impact on the treatment of liver cancer. However, due to its multicomponent and multitarget characteristics, the mechanisms of CS against liver cancer remain unclear. This study collected CS compounds and target proteins in SymMap, then cross-matched with the liver cancer targets in the CTD database to construct an interaction network of CS-liver cancer proteins, and visualized by Cytoscape software. DAVID database was used to perform pathway enrichment analysis to find target proteins in core pathways and the related small molecules in CS. The results showed that a total of 103 common genes shared by CS and liver cancer were obtained, which were enriched for precancerous lesion pathways such as hepatitis B and fatty liver and biological signaling pathways such as HIF-1 and TNF. The combination of sitosterol and CASP3 in CS, acting on "pathways in cancer" and restoring normal cell apoptosis, could be the core mechanisms of CS in the treatment of liver cancer. Based on the system biology analysis, it is speculated that CS may not only participate in multiple mechanisms of action to treat liver cancer synergistically but may also be involved in factors that reduce the incidence of liver cancer.
