Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are formed after neutrophils expelled their chromatin content in order to primarily capture and eliminate pathogens. However, given their characteristics due in part to DNA and different granular proteins, NETs may induce a procoagulant response linking inflammation and thrombosis. Unraveling NET formation molecular mechanisms as well as the intracellular elements that regulate them is relevant not only for basic knowledge but also to design diagnostic and therapeutic tools that may prevent their deleterious effects observed in several inflammatory pathologies (e.g., cardiovascular and autoimmune diseases, cancer). Among the potential elements involved in NET formation, several studies have investigated the role of microRNAs (miRNAs) as important regulators of this process. miRNAs are small non-coding RNAs that have been involved in the control of almost all physiological processes in animals and plants and that are associated with the development of several pathologies. In this review, we give an overview of the actual knowledge on NETs and their implication in pathology with a special focus in cardiovascular diseases. We also give a brief overview on miRNA biology to later focus on the different miRNAs implicated in NET formation and the perspectives opened by the presented data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

AbstractBackgroundObjectiveMethodsResultsConclusionHIV-1-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) in stable patients undergoing antiretroviral therapy (ART) may result from ongoing immune dysregulation and chronic inflammation. A contributing factor may result from the unstable HLA class I allele, HLA-C*07.To assess the genetic profile of killer-cell immunoglobulin-like receptors (KIR), human leukocyte antigens (HLA), and immune activation or senescence markers and their association with HAND in stable HIV-1 patients receiving ART.An observational cross-sectional study was carried out with 96 patients with asymptomatic or symptomatic HAND. HLA and KIR as well as immune activation/senescence biomarkers in peripheral blood cells were assessed by SSO-Luminex typing and flow cytometry, respectively.HLA-C*07 is associated with symptomatic HAND. The frequency of two copies of HLA-C*07 was higher in patients with symptomatic than with asymptomatic HAND (12.0 vs. 2.2%, ρ < 0.001). The percentage of senescent CD8+CD28- T-cells was higher in patients with two copies of HLA-C*07 (ρ < 0.05). In patients with symptomatic HAND, the percentages of non-senescent CD8+CD28+ T cells were inversely proportional to the number of copies of the HLA-C*07 (ρ < 0.05).Patients with symptomatic HAND showed a higher frequency of the homozygotic unstable HLA-C*07 allotype, which could be associated with neurocognitive complications. In this study, ZnO nanoparticles were incorporated in PLA (Polylactic Acid) coating layer for antimicrobial packaging application. The SEM images show that the nanoparticles were homogenously distributed across the surface thanks to its surface modification. The antimicrobial assay indicates that the active material was effective in inactivating E. coli and S. aureus . Furthermore, E. coli was found to be more susceptible to this type of agent, showing 3.14 log reduction for 0.5 wt% agent loading in the PLA coating layer. This result was compared across the publications using the same type of agent for treating both Gram-positive and Gram-negative microorganisms. The discrepancy between the results can be explained by an important fact that ZnO nanoparticle has multiple action mechanisms, and different antimicrobial testing methods may activate only part of the action mechanisms. Abstract: A chromogenic array for monitoring boiled marinated turkey meat freshness in a modified packaging atmosphere (30% CO2, 70% N2) has been developed. The chromogenic array was combined with commodity tools such as digital camera and Photoshop to extract and analyse the colour changes. The array was composed of 16 sensing materials prepared through the combination of 13 indicators (including pH indicators, nucleophilic sensing dyes, etc.) and three different inorganic supports (i.e., UVM-7, alumina and silica gel). The chromogenic data obtained from the array showed characteristic fingerprints for each sampling day (0, 3, 10, 17, 24, 31, 38 and 45 days post-package). Statistical analysis by HCA of the chromogenic data allowed classifying the samples as “fresh”, “not fresh” and “not edible”. Besides, microbiological and sensorial determinations on the packaged samples were also carried out. From these studies a shelf life of 38 days at 4°C was determined. Colour differences from the chromogenic array were employed to create PLS models for aerobic mesophilic bacteria count, sensory score and storage time with quite good results. Abstract: We report herein the development of a new optoelectronic nose composed of seven sensing materials prepared by the incorporation of pH indicators and chromogenic reagents selective to metabolites into inorganic materials (UVM-7 and alumina). The nose has been applied to monitor fresh pork sausage ageing. Sausages were packaged together with the disposable array in a modified packaging atmosphere (30% CO2, 70% N2) and colour changes were measured at seven day intervals. Simultaneously, microbiological and sensory analyses were performed. Colour modulations of the chromogenic array were processed with standard analytical tools, including principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares (PLS). According to the PCA, the array was able to monitor the sausage spoilage process and to distinguish between each sampled day. Moreover, the PLS statistical analysis of the chromogenic data displayed a linear correlation between the predicted and measured values of the storage days, mesophilic bacteria (cfu g−1) and the sensory score with regression coefficients of 0.9300, 0.9472 and 0.9381, respectively. A new optoelectronic nose to monitor chicken meat ageing has been developed. It is based on 16 pigments prepared by the incorporation of different dyes (pH indicators, Lewis acids, hydrogen-bonding derivatives, selective probes and natural dyes) into inorganic materials (UVM-7, silica and alumina). The colour changes of the sensor array were characteristic of chicken ageing in a modified packaging atmosphere (30% CO(2)-70% N(2)). The chromogenic array data were processed with qualitative (PCA) and quantitative (PLS) tools. The PCA statistical analysis showed a high degree of dispersion, with nine dimensions required to explain 95% of variance. Despite this high dimensionality, a tridimensional representation of the three principal components was able to differentiate ageing with 2-day intervals. Moreover, the PLS statistical analysis allows the creation of a model to correlate the chromogenic data with chicken meat ageing. The model offers a PLS prediction model for ageing with values of 0.9937, 0.0389 and 0.994 for the slope, the intercept and the regression coefficient, respectively, and is in agreement with the perfect fit between the predicted and measured values observed. The results suggest the feasibility of this system to help develop optoelectronic noses that monitor food freshness.
