In order to effectively mitigate the risk of bird strikes, it is imperative that radomes situated in areas prone to such incidents possess the capability to endure the impact loads caused by bird collisions. Additionally, these radomes must maintain their electromagnetic transparency. Therefore, glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) with Nomex honeycomb sandwich material is used for radome structural design. The current research is intended to examine the dynamic behavior of sandwich composite panels in order to determine the penetration velocity by testing them at three distinct bird impact velocities, such as 88 m/s, 135 m/s, and 153 m/s. It is necessary to find the velocity at which the bird will penetrate / rupture the radome for the safety of Antenna / Electronic units mounted behind the radome. Finite element explicit code LS-DYNA simulates all three impacts. Extension of the simulation estimated the threshold bird impact velocity to be 146 m/s at which it penetrates the sandwich panel under fixture-controlled boundary condition.

The enhancement of composites’ mechanical characteristics (tensile, compressive, and hardness) is a constant demand for technological advancement. The stir casting process is used to make the hybrid aluminium alloy metal matrix composites Al 6061-SiC-AlN in our present study. To create mechanical qualities such as tensile, compressive, and hardness, silicon carbide and aluminium nitride (both 3% and 6%) were utilized as the reinforcement. The tensile strength, compressive strength, and hardness of the Al 6061-SiC-AlN hybrid composites samples were determined. The tensile, compressive, and hardness parameters of Al 6061-SiC-AlN hybrid composites are estimated and evaluated to those of the matrix Al 6061 alloy. With the inclusion of silicon carbide and AlN nanoparticles, the tensile strength, compressive strength, and hardness increased from 328 to 385 MPa, 145 to 178 Mpa, and 302 to 724 VHN, respectively.

The current work focuses on peanut shells and agricultural wastes richly in many nations subjected to pyrolysis treatment at various temperatures in the range of 500–800°C to determine the feasible physiochemical characteristics of the biochar. The biochars with the high surface area were employed to adsorb Pb2+ (lead) ions, the heaviest pollutants in the water bodies. The raw material, biochar, and pyrolyzed biochar were characterized by SEM, FTIR, partial and elemental analysis, and BET tests. The adsorption characteristics of the biochar, pre- and postpyrolysis treatment, were studied with the assistance of batch adsorption tests under varying test conditions. Adsorbing conditions were determined by evaluating the effects of adsorbing parameters like initial concentration of the lead in water, pH of the adsorbent, contact time, and mixing speed on the effective adsorption of Pb2+ ions from water. Langmuir, Freundlich, and Themkin isotherm expressions were employed to study the experimental results. The adsorption kinetics study showed that the synthesized biochars were chemically stable enough to adsorb the Pb ions onto the surface.

Context and Aim: Diabetes mellitus (DM) can affect one's quality of life (QoL). Literature on the association of QoL among type II diabetics with drug compliance and diet quality among rural communities is poor. This study aimed to determine the QoL among those with type II DM attending an outpatient clinic at a secondary hospital in Tamil Nadu. Settings and Design: A cross-sectional, interview-based study was carried out among those with type II DM. A questionnaire comprising the WHO-BREF tool, Diabetes Healthy Eating Index, Hill-Bone Medication Adherence Scale was administered to participants selected via systematic random sampling. Results: The prevalence of good QoL was estimated to be 51.7% (n = 45, 95% CI: 41.20–62.20). There was no association between good QoL and medication compliance. None of the patients had a good diet quality. Bivariate analysis revealed significant association (p < 0.05) between good QoL and higher education (OR-2.70), those not on medication for complications (OR-2.81) and decreased frequency of general random blood sugar (GRBS) monitoring (OR-2.44). Multivariable analysis adjusting for gender, education, treatment/medication for complications, hospitalisation for DM and GRBS frequency demonstrated significant association between good QoL, lack of medication for complications/co-morbidities and decreased GRBS monitoring frequency with likelihood ratios of 3.25 and 3.44, respectively. Conclusions: The drop in QoL observed could be due to the aftermath of the COVID pandemic. Keeping in mind the impact of healthcare interventions on the QoL of type II DM patients, primary physicians must consider dietary and treatment plans suited to their socio-economic status.

Background: SARS-CoV-2 infection in children can present with varied clinical phenotypes and understanding the pathogenesis is essential, to inform about the clinical trajectory and management. Methods: We performed a multiplex immune assay analysis and compared the plasma biomarkers of Paediatric inflammatory multisystem syndrome temporally associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection (PIMS-TS), acute COVID-19 infection (COVID-19), SARS-CoV-2 seropositive and control children admitted to a tertiary care children's hospital in Chennai, India. Pro-inflammatory cytokines, chemokines and growth factors were correlated with SARS-CoV-2 clinical phenotypes. Findings: PIMS-TS children had significantly elevated levels of cytokines, IFNγ, IL-2, TNFα, IL-1α, IFNα, IFNβ, IL-6, IL-15, IL-17A, GM-CSF, IL-10, IL-33 and IL-Ra; elevated chemokines, CCL2, CCL19, CCL20 and CXCL10 and elevated VEGF, Granzyme B and PDL-1 in comparison to COVID-19, seropositive and controls. COVID-19 children had elevated levels of IFNγ, IL-2, TNFα, IL-1α, IFNα, IFNβ, IL-6, IL-17A, IL-10, CCL2, CCL5, CCL11, CXCL10 and VEGF in comparison to seropositive and/or controls. Similarly, seropositive children had elevated levels of IFNγ, IL-2, IL-1α, IFNβ, IL-17A, IL-10, CCL5 and CXCL10 in comparison to control children. Plasma biomarkers in PIMS-TS and COVID-19 children showed a positive correlation with CRP and a negative correlation with the lymphocyte count and sodium levels. Interpretation: We describe a comprehensive plasma biomarker profile of children with different clinical spectrum of SARS-CoV-2 infection from a low- and middle-income country (LMIC) and observed that PIMS-TS is a distinct and unique immunopathogenic paediatric illness related to SARS-CoV-2 presenting with cytokine storm different from acute COVID-19 infection and other hyperinflammatory conditions.

As conventional concrete repairs have shortcomings and impact the environment, multiple attempts exist to find alternative sustainable measures to address this issue. Microbial-induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) using microalgae is one of the proven methods that can heal microcracks. In this study, the method used in repairing micro-cracks is by spraying microalgae species, namely, Arthrospira platensis and Synechococcus elongatus, cultured in a high calcium-based medium onto the surface of the cement mortar. The crack healing was evaluated for 14 days after the cracks were induced by applying 65–70% of the maximum threshold load. The results show that the microalgal-treated specimens exhibited a higher strength recovery, crack closure, and less water absorption than the control specimen. It is also observed that over 75–80% (0.26 mm, approx.) of the cracks can be healed within the span of 14 days sustainably using microalgae. This research investigated the healing capacity of cracked cement mortar by applying a microalgal solution on the surface externally. The study proves that microalgae are a better and more eco-friendly way than other external chemical agents to crack repair. A maximum of 67% strength was regained in 14 days of treatment with Arthrospira platensis. Over 75–80% of cracks can heal after spraying microalgae. The internet of things (IoT) integrates plans, operations, data management, and strategies, because they continuously support businesses, they could be a new point of entry for cyberattacks. IoT security is being seriously threatened by viruses and illicit downloads. These dangers run the risk of obtaining sensitive information, damaging their reputation and their finances. The attack prevention in IoT is detected in this work using a hybrid optimisation mechanism and deep learning a frame. A cybersecurity warning system (CWS) is proposed in this paper, by first preprocessing the input, then classifying, and finally optimizing it. With the modified particle swarm optimization algorithm (MPSO), the IDS is more effective at identifying both normal and abnormal connection in the networks. The smart initialization phase combines various pre-processing strategies to ensure that the informational features incorporated in the early development phase have been enhanced. Then the dilated convolutional neural network (di-CNN) is used for classification and is optimized by using MPSO algorithm to detect the attack. The recommended method is implemented in MATLAB stimulator. The effectiveness of the proposed CWS method approach has been assessed utilising performance criteria such as accuracy, precision ratio, F1 score, specificity, and detection rate. Cellular lightweight concrete (CLC), also known as foamed concrete, has been extensively used in construction for decades. Foamed concrete's properties include low density, excellent thermal conductivity, great workability, and selfcompaction; these features enable foamed concrete to be utilized in various contexts. However, the excessive use of conventional materials in concrete production harms the environment. Therefore, using agro-waste as a material to construct ecologically sustainable structures has numerous practical and financial benefits. Palm oil clinker (POC) is a waste product resulting from solid waste combustion during palm oil extraction. This research focused on the properties of foamed concrete with POC at 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% as the fine aggregate replacement to develop lightweight foamed concrete (LFC) with a density of 1300 kg/m3. Besides, the potential of POC powder (POCP) and thermally activated POCP (TPOCP) at 0%, 10%, 20%, and 30% as cement replacements was examined. The development of compressive strength during a 90-day curing period was investigated. In addition, tensile and flexural strengths were assessed and reported, and the elastic modulus of the LFC was discussed. The transport properties of water absorption, porosity, and sorptivity were also investigated. The durability of concrete derivatives can exhibit the product's resistance to chemical attacks and environmental conditions. After 75 days of immersion in hydrochloric acid and magnesium sulfate, the chemical resistivity of the produced LFC was determined by measuring the loss in weight and compressive strength. In addition, the effects of elevated temperatures on the LFC were determined by analyzing the mass loss and compressive strength degradation of specimens exposed to temperatures ranging from 200 to 800 °C. The test results demonstrated that the complete replacement of sand with POC enhanced the compressive strength of LFC by more than 50%. Similarly, POC-based LFC had higher flexural and tensile strengths than normal LFC. Besides, substituting 20% of cement with TPOCP could improve the strength of LFC by 23% during the initial curing days. Utilizing the optimal proportions of POC and POCP could enhance the residual strengths of LFC. The excessive exploitation of natural resources, such as mining or river sand in concrete, has resulted in several catastrophic disasters worldwide. Furthermore, the low compressive strength of lightweight concrete (LFC) has limited its use as structural concrete. In this research, the feasibility of replacing natural mining sand (MS) as fine aggregates in the development of LFC with local agro‐industrial waste material, namely palm oil clinker (POC), which can be considered a sustainable material, at different replacement ratios of 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% was investigated. Because of the porous structure of POC, a volume‐based method was employed in the mix design of using the specific gravities to produce LFC with three different target densities of 1100, 1300, and 1500 kg/m3. The investigated parameters include workability, compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), and scanning electron microscope (SEM) images. Overall, 100% replacement of MS volume with POC with the sieve size below 0.6 mm resulted in a 90‐day compressive strength of 26.7 MPa in the LFC with a density of 1500 kg/m3. Similar to the compressive strength, the utilization of the sustainable POC as fine aggregates slightly improved the tensile and flexural strengths of LFC. On the other hand, replacing 100% of MS with POC with the sieve size below 0.6 mm reduced the flow test results of LFC from 405 to 350 mm. Foxtail millet, scientific name Setaria italica, is an annual grass grown for human food. It is the second-most widely planted species of millet, and the most grown millet species in Asia. Rich in vitamin B12, these tiny seeds can offer a daily dose of ample protein, good fat, carbohydrate and amazing dietary fiber content rich in flavonoids like lysine, thiamine, iron and niacin, it also offers copious amounts of calcium. The objective of the present work is to study the effect of roasting time and temperature on the physiochemical properties of foxtail millet flour to develop a functional beverage . The time and temperature for roasting are varied from 15 minutes to 30 minutes and 50°C to 100°C, respectively. The physical properties such as tap density, bulk density, angle of repose, color, moisture content are found out and compared with the unroasted flour which is the control sample and processing for formulation of beverage by using retort processing. In recent years, research work on the use of coal bottom ash (CBA) as a partial alternative for aggregate in concrete is on the rise. This research is aimed at examining the characteristics of lightweight foamed concrete with CBA as fine aggregate to produce environmentally sustainable product. With the volume replacement technique, CBA was used as 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% replacement for conventional mining sand with different sieve sizes of smaller than 4.75, 2.36, and 0.6 mm in concrete. Water absorption, porosity as well as mechanical characteristics tests, including compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and modulus of elasticity (MOE) were conducted and analyzed. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy microstructural investigations were also performed to correlate test results. The quality of concrete was investigated using a non-destructive ultrasonic pulse velocity test. According to the findings, the highest replacement level of CBA with a sieve size smaller than 0.6 mm had an impact in reducing workability. The effect of CBA particles on water absorption, MOE, compressive strength, and tensile strength depends on the size of the fine aggregate, the replacement ratio and the density. In general, substituting mining sand with CBA aggregate improved the mechanical performance of concrete, notably for the aggregate size of less than 0.6 mm. We study the generation of a single photon perfect W-state. An important aspect of this perfect W-state is that it can be used for perfect teleportation and superdense coding, which are not achievable with maximally entangled W-state. Our scheme for generation involves entanglement between various path degrees of freedom of a single photon in a compact and weakly coupled integrated waveguide system, which can be fabricated precisely with a femtosecond laser direct writing technique. These platforms are interferometrically stable, scalable, less sensitive to decoherence and ensure a very low loss factor of 0.1dBcm−1 during photon propagation, and hence are ideal for generation of a perfect W-state. In the recent decades, rapid transit system (RTS) plays a significant key role to form most affordable and comfort travel zone to humans. With increase in population and usage of RTS, safety measures are concerned to be most notable factor in the world. Moreover, during emergency cases internal wired safety setups of any RTS does not prevents drastic disaster and allows negative impact for on-demand reliable changes. As an alternative to other expensive technologies, wireless sensor network (WSN) system provides fast communicative and compact applications to RTS. Inorder to reduce causalities, designing such a network application to RTS always poses challenging problems in terms of fault tolerance and time bounded packet delivery. Integrated fuzzy-logic based synchronized data transmission (IFSDT) algorithm has been designed to optimize those challenges, especially in RTS. IFSDT is a synchronized energy aware algorithm that prevents the occurrence of potential faults during unexpected emergencies in the coaches of RTS and ensures the fast transmission of critical broadcast signal and response in a limited time span. Furthermore, the results of the proposed design performs better than the existing reliable and energy optimized WSN design and exhibits the optimized response time for broadcasting emergency signals which is below 0.02 s. Lung perfusion scan provides a map of the spatial distribution of lung perfusion. This can be used to design radiation portals to spare functional lung (FL), potentially reducing lung toxicity. The purpose of this study was to assess the utility of lung perfusion single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) in treatment planning for lung cancer patients. Materials and Methods: Radiotherapy treatment planning computed tomography (CT) scans and SPECT scans of 11 patients of lung cancer suitable for external radiotherapy were co-registered. Conventional treatment plans (anatomic plan) and plans with FL information (functional plan) was generated. The difference in dose volume parameters (V20, V30 and mean lung doses) due to these two plans were compared using Bland-Altman plots. Results: Functional plans produced a more favorable plan compared with anatomic plan in all except three cases. FL V20 values and FL mean lung dose were reduced for all patients by an average of 5.45 Gy and 7.72 Gy respectively which were statistically significant. Conclusions: Lung perfusion scans provide functional information which is not provided by CT scans. SPECT-guidance aids in reducing the dose delivered to highly perfused regions which could reduce the incidence of pneumonitis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructure with polar and non-polar constituents has been shown to exhibit interface metallic conductivity due to fractional charge transfer to the interface. This avoids the divergence of the electrostatic potential, as the number of layers are increased, producing an oscillatory electric field and finite potential. Akin to the description of charge fractionalization in quasi–one-dimensional polyacetylene by the field-theoretic Jackiw-Rebbi model with fermions interacting with a topologically non-trivial background field, we show an analogous connection between the polar catastrophe model and the Bell-Rajaraman model, where the charge fractionalization occurs in the soliton free sector as an end effect. Introduction: Middle meningeal artery (MMA) is the largest and very important branch of maxillary artery which supplies the meninges. It directly attaches to the cranial bones (is incorporated into periosteal layer of dura mater), favors common injuries in course of head trauma. In several neurological diseases, the lesions occur in either the MMA itself and treatment is necessary or the MMA is used as the pathway to treat the lesions. Thus, a clear knowledge of the anatomical organization of MMA is of great importance in neurosurgery and radiology; the main aim of the study is to investigate the anatomical organization of the MMA through the bony groove measurements from human skulls, through morphometrical measurement. Materials and Methods: A total of 50 dry human skull bones (cranial cavity opened) were obtained from the Department of Anatomy, Saveetha Dental College and Hospitals, Chennai. Using a flexible orthodontic wire and Vernier caliper, the length of the main trunk of MMA, the length of the frontal and parietal branches, and the length of the bony tunnel were measured and recorded. The pattern of middle meningeal vessel impression was analyzed using "ImageJ" software analysis. Results: As per our observations in this study, there was no significant difference found between the morphometric measurements of the left and right side of the MMA. Conclusion: The study provides vivid observations and also reveals important insights about some aspects of the anatomical organization of the MMA impression and its arterial pattern bilaterally. Thus, our observations on the morphometry of MMA undoubtedly will be useful to increase the detailed knowledge about this vital arterial segment of the skull that has extensive clinical implications. Introduction: The corrosion casting technique by using resin is usual technique to demonstrate luminal patterns of bronchus, blood vessels, etc… in life science. A corrosion cast of a lung can give a detailed study of the bronchial patterns. Corrosion cast is done using various resin solutions. The aim of the present work is to study the bronchial tree pattern of a goat lung using corrosion casting method. Materials and Methods: Deflated lungs along with intact trachea of a goat were collected from the slaughterhouse. Commercially available rubber silicone has been injected into the lungs through the trachea so that the bronchial patterns can be easily appreciable. After complete filling, the specimen is kept undisturbed for the next 24–48 h. The tissue surrounding the cast is alone removed away and washed with plain water to remove the bloodstains. Results: After dissecting out the tissues using forceps, the cast was washed in plain water. According to the observation of the specimen, it is found that the trachea is branched into the right and left primary bronchi. The secondary bronchi are further branched to form the tertiary bronchi which resemble like fine bristles. In the right lung, it is observed that before the branching of primary bronchus from the trachea, it is known as the apical bronchus supplying the apical lobe of the right lung. Conclusion: Demonstration of bronchial pattern with its various branches is not easy without a corrosion casting preparation. This study can be a valuable teaching aid and museum specimen. In the present era, rapid transits are one of the most affordable means of public transport with various useful integrated application systems. The majority of the integrated applications are deployed in concern over safety and precautionary measures against the worst side-effects of unfortunate emergencies. For such cases, high-end reliable and autonomous systems provide possible positive solutions. Wireless Sensor Network is one of the suitable choices for rapid transit applications to gain positive results with inexpensive implementation cost. However, managing few network consequences like fault tolerance, energy balancing and routing critical informative packets are considered to be the challenging task due to their limited resource usage restriction. In this paper, a novel fuzzy logic-based fault tolerance and instant synchronized routing technique have been proposed specifically for the rapid transit system. On utilizing the fuzzy logic concepts, most of the computational complexities and uncertainties of the system is reduced. The central thematic of the proposed design is concerned over the synchronized routing and permanent faults which abruptly depicts the non-functional nature of the sensor nodes during normal operations. Moreover, our proposed simulation outcomes proved to be improvised evidence on obtaining maximum packet delivery ratio which tends to handle an emergency situation in the compartments of rapid transits.

Highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), consisting of three or more antiretroviral drugs, is recommended for patients with HIV infection. HAART effectively reduces HIV RNA levels, lowers the risk of opportunistic infections, and improves immune function and survival rates. However, it is also associated with an increased risk of liver injury in HIV-infected individuals. This review aims to summarize the mechanisms underlying HAART-induced liver injury. A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed and EMBASE using keywords such as "Antiretroviral/ARV drugs and drug-induced liver injury (DILI)," "HAART and DILI," "Antiretroviral therapy and DILI," and "HIV infection and DILI." Relevant papers published before March 2024 were included. Experimental studies have demonstrated that zidovudine and efavirenz can cause structural alterations in mitochondria, impair the respiratory chain, generate free radicals, and deplete mitochondrial DNA, leading to oxidative and endoplasmic reticulum stress, as well as the accumulation of advanced glycation end products in liver tissue. Zidovudine disrupts lipid homeostasis by increasing fatty acid synthesis and reducing metabolism. Efavirenz and its metabolite, 8-hydroxyefavirenz, induce hepatocellular death and activate proapoptotic markers through c-Jun N-terminal kinase signaling. Additionally, lamivudine has been shown to induce liver injury and oxidative stress in rats. HAART regimens that include efavirenz, lamivudine, and tenofovir impair glucose and lipid homeostasis in rats, highlighting the need for caution in HIV patients with fatty liver disease. Patients with viral hepatitis coinfection, those taking antitubercular drugs or cotrimoxazole, and those on nevirapine-containing regimens are at particularly high risk. Regular monitoring of liver function is essential to prevent liver damage associated with HAART in HIV-infected patients. The roots of Coleus vettiveroides (CV) have been traditionally used in Indian medicinal systems such as Ayurveda and Siddha for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antidiabetic effects. This study examines the antifibrotic potential of CV ethanolic root extract (CVERE) against thioacetamide (TAA)-induced liver fibrosis in Wistar rats. TAA was administered via i.p., thrice weekly for 11 weeks to induce liver fibrosis in rats. In separate groups, rats were administered with TAA and were concurrently treated with CVERE 125 mg/kg, CVERE 250 mg/kg, and silymarin (SIL) 100 mg/kg. Liver marker enzymes of hepatotoxicity, oxidative stress markers, proinflammatory marker gene expression (TNF-α, NF-κB, COX, and ILs), fibrotic marker gene expression (collagen I and III), immune histochemical expression of fibrosis marker proteins, and histopathologic changes were analyzed. TAA administration led to a significant (p < 0.001) increase in the serum level of hepatotoxic marker enzymes. The TAA-treated group showed higher levels (p < 0.001) of MDA and reduced activities of SOD and CAT in the liver. TAA administration increased CYP2E1 expression, proinflammatory, and fibrotic marker gene expressions in rat liver. The histopathology of the liver confirms TAA-induced architectural distortion and fibrotic changes. CVERE and SIL simultaneous treatments significantly protected against TAA-induced oxidative stress, inflammation, and liver fibrosis. In conclusion, CVERE inhibited TAA-induced liver fibrosis through downregulation of TAA metabolic activation, redox imbalance, and inflammation through repression of the NF-κB pathway., (© 2024 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

Accurate estimation of coastal and in-land water quality parameters is important for managing water resources and meeting the demand of sustainable development goals. The water quality monitoring based on discrete water sample analysis is limited to specific locations and becomes less effective to offer a synoptic view of the water quality variability at different spatial and temporal scales. The optical remote sensing techniques have proved their ability to provide a comprehensive and synoptic view of water quality parameters. In conjugation with other products, the optical remote sensing data products can be utilized for the effective management of water bodies while addressing the socio-economic issues faced by local governments and states. In recent years, multiple machine-learning (ML) models have been reported on the estimation of water quality using remote sensing data, but their performance is limited when extended to diverse water types within coastal and inland water environments. In this study, we present an ensemble machine-learning model for estimating the primary water quality parameters in coastal and inland waters, such as Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration, colored dissolved organic matter (a CDOM 440), and Turbidity. It utilizes the in-situ measurements to train and optimize the ensemble machine-learning models for the spectral measurements data (400-700 nm) provided by MODIS-Aqua, Sentinel-2 Multi Spectral Instrument (MSI), and PlanetScope (Planet). To develop the prediction models, these in-situ measurements data were split into two parts: a training dataset (70 %) and a testing dataset (30 %). The ensemble machine-learning models were validated using the 5-fold cross-validation method. These models were trained and tested against distinct datasets encompassing a broad range of variations in water quality parameters collected from open ocean, coastal and inland waters. The validation results demonstrated a superior performance of the present ensemble ML models compared to other ML models (Chl-a: R 2  = 0.96, RMSE = 4.93, MAE = 2.89; a CDOM 440: R 2  = 0.93, RMSE = 0.057, MAE = 0.025; Turbidity: R 2  = 0.95, RMSE = 4.52, MAE = 1.009). To realize the importance of this study, the ensemble ML models were applied to MODIS-Aqua monthly composite measurements from 2003 to 2022 and captured pronounced seasonal variations in water quality parameters (WQP) and Water Quality Index (WQI). For instance, in the Gulf of Khambhat, turbidity decreased at an annual average rate of ∼0.08 NTU and Chl-a increased at an annual average rate of ∼0.004 mg m -3 for the past 20 years. Furthermore, we investigated the occurrences of Noctiluca scintillans (here after N. scintillans) bloom between 2019 and 2021 near the fin fish cage culture sites in Mandapam, on the southeast coast of Tamil Nadu, within the Gulf of Mannar, India which serves as a documentation of the Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) incidents. The performance of ensemble model is further demonstrated using Planet images from inland turbid waters of the Muthupet lagoon (Brackish water) and Adyar river (Urban River) and MSI image from Chilika lagoon. Reducing wastewater contaminants is an emerging area of particular concern for many industrialized and developing countries in improving the ecological quality of their water sources. In this case, the use of algae-based microbial reactors for wastewater treatment has attracted increasing attention in recent years. The advantages of both conventional microbial membrane bioreactors (MBRs) and algae-based treatment are combined in algae-based MBRs. According to the literature, previous studies did not fully discuss the techniques and performance of algae-based bioreactor systems in the treatment of wastewater. In particular, little attention has been paid to the types of waste, their consequences, and the ways in which they are treated. This makes it more difficult to develop and scale up efficient systems to treat waste discharge from industry, agriculture, and urban areas. Thus, the objective of this study is to critically evaluate algae as a valuable biological resource for wastewater treatment, with the goal of reducing emerging contaminants and increasing the chemical oxygen demand (COD) in wastewater. The most common wastewater treatment techniques employed for addressing these wastes are examined together with a brief discussion on contaminants in wastewater. Furthermore, algae-based wastewater treatment arrangements, particularly hybrid configurations, are carefully studied in relation to techniques for removing contaminants using algae. After analysing the key physicochemical characteristics that affect the ability of algal-bioremediation to remove developing contaminants, the benefits of algal-bioremediation systems are compared to those of other techniques. Sustained liver injuries predominantly promote oxidative stress and inflammation that lead to the progression of chronic liver disease (CLD), including fibrosis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Boldine, an alkaloid isolated from Peumus boldus, has been shown to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Currently, there is no definitive treatment option available for CLD. Therefore, we investigated the hepatoprotective effect of boldine against carbon tetrachloride (CCl 4 )-induced chronic liver injury in rats. CCl 4 (2 mL/kg., b.w., i.p.) was administered twice weekly for 5 weeks to induce chronic liver injury in rats. Separate groups of rats were given boldine (20 mg/kg b.w., and 40 mg/kg b.w.) and silymarin (100 mg/kg b.w.) orally, daily. Serum transaminases, lipid peroxidation, and antioxidant levels were measured, and nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), cyclooxygenase-2 (cox-2), interleukin-1 β (IL-1β), and α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) gene and protein expressions were evaluated. CCl 4 administration increased liver marker enzymes of hepatotoxicity in serum and oxidative stress markers, inflammatory genes and α-smooth muscle actin expression in liver tissue. Boldine concurrent treatment suppressed CCl 4 -induced elevation of transaminase levels in serum, restored enzymic and non-enzymic antioxidants, and downregulated NF-κB, TNF-α, Cox-2 and IL-1β expressions, thereby suppressing hepatic inflammation. Boldine administration also repressed α-SMA expression. The results of this study demonstrate the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antifibrotic properties of boldine, and it can be a potential therapeutic candidate in the treatment of CLD., (© 2024 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

Accurate retrieval of the water-leaving radiance from hyperspectral/multispectral remote sensing data in optically complex inland and coastal waters remains a challenge due to the excessive concentrations of phytoplankton and suspended sediments as well as the inaccurate estimation and extrapolation of aerosol radiance over the visible wavelengths. In recent years, reasonably accurate methods were established to estimate the enhanced contribution of suspended sediments in the near-infrared (NIR) and shortwave infrared (SWIR) bands to enable atmospheric correction in coastal waters, but solutions to derive the dominant phytoplankton contribution in the NIR and SWIR bands are less generalizable and subject to large uncertainties in the remotely-derived water color products. These issues are not only associated with the standard atmospheric correction algorithm in the SeaDAS processing system but with the non-traditional algorithms such as POLYMER (POLYnomial-based approach established for the atmospheric correction of MERIS data). This study attempts to enhance the POLYMER algorithm to enable atmospheric correction of hyperspectral and multispectral remote sensing data over a wide range of inland and ocean waters. The original POLYMER algorithm is less suitable owing to its complete reliance on a polynomial approach to model the atmospheric reflectance as a function of the wavelength and retrieve the water-leaving reflectance using two semi-analytical models (MM01 and PR05). The polynomial functions calculate the bulk atmospheric contribution instead of using an explicit method to estimate aerosol radiance separately, resulting the erroneous water color products in inland and coastal waters. The modified POLYMER algorithm (mPOLYMER) employs more realistic approaches to estimate aerosol contributions with a combination of UV and Visible-NIR bands and enables accurate retrievals of water-leaving radiance from both hyperspectral and multispectral remote sensing data. To assess the relative performance and wider applicability of mPOLYMER, the original and enhanced algorithms were tested on a variety of HICO, MSI and MODIS-Aqua data and the retrieved L wn products were compared with AERONET-OC and OOIL-regional in-situ data. Expectedly, the mPOLYMER algorithm greatly improved the accuracy of L wn (in terms of magnitude and spectral shape) when applied to MODIS-Aqua and HICO data in highly turbid productive waters (with higher concentrations of phytoplankton or with dense algal blooms) in Muttukadu Lagoon, Lake Erie, Yangtze River Estuary, Baltic Sea and Arabian Sea. In contrast, the original POLYMER algorithm overestimated L wn in the visible and NIR bands and produced unphysical negative L wn or distorted L wn spectra in turbid productive waters. The mPOLYMER yielded a relative mean error reduction of more than 50% (i.e., from 79% to 34%) in L wn for a large number of matchup data. The improved accuracy and data quality is because the mPOLYMER algorithm's funio and coefficients sufficiently accounted for the enhanced backscattering contribution of phytoplankton and suspended sediments in optically complex waters.

An efficient synthesis of the enantiomerically pure 3,3'-bis-arylated BINOLs is accomplished through decarboxylative iodination of the dimethyl ether derivative of BINOL-3,3'-dicarboxylic acid followed by Suzuki-Miyaura coupling using a one-pot protocol. The decarboxylative iodination is effected with the dimethyl ether derivative of BINOL-3,3'-dicarboxylic acid using iodine as a terminal oxidant and the cheaply available K 3 PO 4 as a base under neat conditions. This protocol facilitated the introduction of the aryl group at the 3,3'-position on the binaphthyl system using aryl boronic acid through a palladium-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction.

Background Drug-induced liver injury is a common cause of acute liver failure. Isoniazid (INH) is used as a first-line treatment for tuberculosis. Clinical and experimental studies have reported abnormal liver function after INH therapy. Lagerstroemia speciosa Pers., commonly known as banaba, has been traditionally used to treat various ailments including diabetes and obesity due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Aim To investigate the hepatoprotective effect of ethanolic banaba leaf extract (EBLE) against INH-induced hepatotoxicity in rats. Materials and methods A total of 30 male Wistar albino rats (150 - 200 g) were divided into five groups (n = 6). Group I rats were served as a control and were administered dimethyl sulfoxide for the first 30 days and water for the next 30 consecutive days. Group II rats were administered INH (50 mg/kg, p.o.) once in the first 30 consecutive days and sacrificed at Day 30. Group III rats were administered INH for 30 consecutive days and left without treatment for the next 30 days. In Groups IV and V, rats were post-treated orally with EBLE 250 and 500 mg/kg, p.o. (0.3 ml/rat) for 30 days after INH administration. At the end of Day 60, the remaining group of animals were sacrificed. The blood and liver tissues were collected. The marker enzymes of hepatotoxicity, oxidative stress markers, inflammatory markers, and histopathology were analyzed. Results INH administration induced significant elevation of marker enzymes (aspartate transaminase, alanine transaminase, alkaline phosphatase, lactate dehydrogenase, bilirubin, gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase) of hepatotoxicity in the serum. This treatment also increased lipid peroxidation and proinflammatory marker expression (tumor necrosis factor-alpha, transforming growth factor-beta, and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) except inhibitor of NF-κB) and decreased antioxidants such superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione in the liver tissue. All these abnormalities were significantly mitigated after treatment with EBLE. Acetaminophen (APAP) in high doses causes acute liver injury and acute liver failure. Ethyl gallate (EG) is a natural polyphenol, possessing antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-microbial properties. Therefore, in this study, we evaluated the protective role of EG against APAP-induced acute liver injury in mice. Acute liver injury was induced by a single dose of APAP (400 mg/kg., i.p.). In separate groups, EG (10 mg/kg), EG (20 mg/kg), and N-acetylcysteine (NAC; 1200 mg/kg., i.p.) were administered concurrently with APAP. The mice were sacrificed after 24 h of treatment. Liver marker enzymes of hepatotoxicity, antioxidant markers, inflammatory markers, and histopathological studies were done. APAP administration caused a significant elevation of marker enzymes of hepatotoxicity and lipid peroxidation. APAP administration also decreased enzymic and nonenzymic antioxidants. Acute APAP intoxication induced nuclear factor κ B, tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-1, p65, and p52 and downregulated IκB gene expressions. Our histopathological studies have confirmed the presence of centrilobular necrosis, 24 h after APAP intoxication. All the above abnormalities were significantly inhibited in groups of mice that were concurrently administered with APAP + EG and APAP + NAC. Our in silico analysis further confirms that hydroxyl groups of EG interact with the above inflammatory proteins at the 3,4,5-trihydroxybenzoic acid region. These effects of EG against APAP-induced acute liver injury could be attributed to its antioxidative, free radical scavenging, and anti-inflammatory potentials. Acute liver injury is caused by various factors, including oxidative stress and inflammation. Coleus vettiveroides, an ayurvedic medicinal plant, is known to possess antioxidant, antibacterial, and antidiabetic properties. In this current study, we investigated the protective effect of C. vettiveroides ethanolic root extract (CVERE) against thioacetamide (TAA)-induced acute liver injury in rats. A single dose of TAA (300 mg/kg, b.w., i.p.) was administered to induce acute liver injury. The treatment groups of rats were concurrently treated with CVERE (125 and 250 mg/kg, b.w., p.o.) and silymarin (100 mg/kg, b.w., p.o.), respectively. After 24 h of the experimental period, TAA-induced liver injury was confirmed by increased activity of serum transaminases and malondialdehyde levels in liver tissue, decreased levels of antioxidants, upregulated expression of the inflammatory marker gene, and altered liver morphology. Whereas CVERE simultaneous treatment inhibited hepatic injury and prevented the elevation of serum aspartate and alanine transaminases, alkaline phosphatase, and lactate dehydrogenase activities. CVERE attenuated TAA-induced oxidative stress by suppressing lipid peroxidation and restoring antioxidants such as superoxide dismutase, catalase, and reduced glutathione. Further, CVERE treatment was found to inhibit nuclear factor κB-mediated inflammatory signaling, as indicated by downregulated pro-inflammatory cytokines including tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-1β.
