Speciation traits of paramere, paraproct and aedeagus were applied to find initial split criteria with fine structure analysis in order to prepare diverged trait matrices for delimiting phylogenetic incipient species of unsettled limnephilid taxa in the early stages of reproductive isolation. A brief history is presented how this phenotypic taxonomic tool of the speciation traits was discovered and applied in caddisfly taxonomy. The theoretical basis was elaborated for the phenotypic speciation trait by reviewing several relevant topics in the sciences of taxonomy, molecular genetics and phylogenetics. Perspectives of integrative taxonomy is discussed in context of phenotype versus genotype, immensely complex phenotype versus phenomic challenge, taxonomic impediment versus genetic expedient, taxonomic adaptation of genetic vocabulary versus genetic sophistication and virtualization, New Systematics of Huxley and Mayr versus New Taxonomy of Wheeler. Debates on magic trait, speciation phenotype, speciation trait and super traits are discussed concluding that evolution works with phenotype and why the cryptic species concept is irrelevant. Briefly summarized how speciation traits evolve in sexual selection, through accelerated reproductive isolation with genital evolution through sex-limited speciation traits, including minor sex chromosomes. Why neutral molecular markers are blind compared to the adaptive speciation traits sensitized by fine structure analysis and backed by the potential of high-tech and high-throughput phenotyping and cyber-infrastructure broadly accessible and fed by computable phenotype descriptions. What sort of genetics could really help taxonomy to describe biodiversity of the over 100 million unknown taxa? Collecting new and re-examining old type materials deposited in various collections, the following taxonomic actions were elaborated by speciation traits. To estimate the potential loss of fish larvae to downstream stretches, the downstream drift behaviour of fish eggs and larvae, in particular barbel, Barbus barbus (L.), was examined in the River Lee, a small, nutrient-rich chalk stream in England, using drift nets over nine consecutive 24-h periods in June 1993 at one location and over ten 24-h periods, once a week for 10 weeks from May to July 1995 at a location slightly more upstream. The density of drifting fish larvae was not correlated with river discharge in 1993 or 1995. A clear diel pattern was found in the drift of fish eggs and larvae, with barbel being a predominant species. Almost all fish larvae drifted at night both in 1993 and 1995, but the drift of eggs in 1995 occurred regardless of luminosity, although most eggs drifted during the day and at dawn. The highest densities of drifting fish larvae (in particular barbel) were found in the nets set in the highest water velocities, with the opposite pattern observed for fish eggs, suggesting either active response to the water current or shape-related differences in the drift behaviour of passive particles. The annual mean density of Brachycentrus subnubilus a trichopteran species with a univoltine life-cycle was 572 ind. m-2. It constituted of only 2.1% of the total macrozoobenthos abundance, whilethis species in terms of biomass exceeded 11.9% of the total benthicbiomass. A biomonitoring technique was employed to assess metal contamination of several degraded urban streams in the Łódź agglomeration. Presence of heavy metals (Zn, Cu, Fe, Cd, Pb, Cr, was determined in whole bodies of Hydropsyche angustipennis larvae. Larvae of H. angustipennis were the only caddisflies living in most of  investigated streams. These metals as well as other environmental variables were investigated in sediments or free waters of urban streams and in a stretch of a similar size of the Grabia River (reference site), outside the city but still in the vicinity of the Łódź agglomeration. The results of our research demonstrated different levels of contamination of urban streams as well as a correlation between environmental and larval tissue concentrations of heavy metals. Significant differences among sites were observed for metal concentrations in H. angustipennis larval bodies and larval responses to metals were time specific. The highest concentration of heavy metals was observed during the spring months. Differences were evident among various heavy metal levels in the bodies of larvae collected from different streams and at different sampling stations in the same stream.

Hydropsyche angustipennis (Insecta, Trichoptera) larvae were used as indicators of stream contamination in the city of Łódź, Poland. The larvae of H. angustipennis were present at 9 sampling sites established for this study. Significant differences between the sampling sites were noted for environmental parameters as well as concentration of chemicals in water and biodiversity of aquatic invertebrates. Statistical analyses showed significant correlations between quantity and quality of water pollutants and density of H. angustipennis larvae, concentration of metals in larval bodies, and the appearance of morphological anomalies in tracheal gills and anal papillae. In comparison to literature data, the level of contaminants in water, including heavy metals, for each of the studied streams of Łódź was surprisingly low while concentration of these metals in the whole bodies of H. angustipennis larvae was very high. Some of the heavy metals present in the water might be identified only after conducting analyses of their concentration in the larval bodies. Therefore, long life cycle of H. angustipennis and heavy metal tolerance with a possibility of their accumulation in the larval bodies may constitute a support to traditional chemical assessment of water quality or traditional biomonitoring.
