BackgroundPatients with cancer are particularly vulnerable to stress and anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic. Social distancing is critical for patients with cancer; however, it can also reduce their access to psychosocial coping resources. ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to explore patient experiences to generate a model of how virtual mind-body programs can support the psychosocial well-being of patients with cancer. MethodsWe conducted a qualitative study among patients (aged ≥18 years) who participated in a virtual mind-body program offered by a National Cancer Institute–designated Comprehensive Cancer Center during the COVID-19 pandemic. The program consisted of mind-body group therapy sessions of fitness, yoga, tai chi, dance therapy, music therapy, and meditation. Live integrative medicine clinicians held each session via Zoom videoconferencing for 30-45 minutes. In semistructured phone interviews (n=30), patients were asked about their overall impressions and perceptions of the benefits of the sessions, including impacts on stress and anxiety. Interviews were analyzed using grounded theory. ResultsAmong the 30 participants (average age 64.5 years, SD 9.36, range 40-80, 29 female), three major themes were identified relating to experiences in the virtual mind-body program: (1) the sessions helped the patients maintain structured routines and motivated them to adhere to healthy behaviors; (2) the sessions enhanced coping with COVID-19-related-stressors, allowing patients to “refocus” and “re-energize”; and (3) the sessions allowed patients to connect, fostering social relationships during a time of isolation. These themes informed the constructs of a novel behavioral-psychological-social coping model for patients with cancer. ConclusionsVirtual mind-body programming supported patients with cancer during the COVID-19 pandemic through a behavioral-psychological-social coping model by enhancing psychological coping for external stressors, supporting adherence to motivation and health behaviors, and increasing social connection and camaraderie. These programs have potential to address the behavioral, psychological, and social challenges faced by patients with cancer during and beyond the COVID-19 pandemic. The constructs of the conceptual model proposed in this study can inform future interventions to support isolated patients with cancer. Further clinical trials are needed to confirm the specific benefits of virtual mind-body programming for the psychosocial well-being and healthy behaviors of patients with cancer.

Abstract B-Myb has received considerable attention for its critical tumorigenic function of supporting DNA repair. However, its modulatory effects on chemotherapy and immunotherapy have rarely been reported in colorectal cancer. Bortezomib (BTZ) is a novel compound with chemotherapeutic and immunotherapeutic effects, but it fails to work in colorectal cancer with high B-Myb expression. The present study was designed to investigate whether B-Myb deletion in colorectal cancer could potentiate the immune efficacy of BTZ against colorectal cancer and to clarify the underlying mechanism. Stable B-Myb knockdown was induced in colorectal cancer cells, which increased apoptosis of the cancer cells relative to the control group in vitro and in vivo. We found that BTZ exhibited more favourable efficacy in B-Myb–defective colorectal cancer cells and tumor-bearing mice. BTZ treatment led to differential expression of genes enriched in the p53 signaling pathway promoted more powerful downstream DNA damage, and arrested cell cycle in B-Myb–defective colorectal cancer. In contrast, recovery of B-Myb in B-Myb–defective colorectal cancer cells abated BTZ-related DNA damage, cell cycle arrest, and anticancer efficacy. Moreover, BTZ promoted DNA damage–associated enhancement of immunogenicity, as indicated by potentiated expression of HMGB1 and HSP90 in B-Myb–defective cells, thereby driving M1 polarization of macrophages. Collectively, B-Myb deletion in colorectal cancer facilitates the immunogenic death of cancer cells, thereby further promoting the immune efficacy of BTZ by amplifying DNA damage. The present work provides an effective molecular target for colorectal cancer immunotherapy with BTZ.

ABSTRACTThis study primarily analyzed the response of cold tolerance and phenology periods of four pear cultivars to climate differences in central (Gongzhuling) and eastern (Longjing) Jilin, which could provide a theoretical basis for the regional division and cultivation. It showed that there was a significant difference in the cold tolerance of the same cultivars between the two regions. Soluble sugar and soluble starch contents are the most important physiological indicators that determine the cold tolerance of the pear cultivars in Gongzhuling is stronger than that in Longjing. In phenology, only the cessation of terminal shoot extension and growing season length of pear cultivars were significantly related to their contents of soluble sugar and soluble starch. Furthermore, the gray correlation analysis identified the district’s effective accumulated temperature as the key meteorological factors affecting the cessation of terminal shoot extension. The precipitation in the growing season was another major meteorological factor affecting the growing season length. Therefore, in this study, the influence of the main district meteorological factors on the key phenology periods of four pear cultivars, which decided the different accumulation of sugar and starch, eventually lead to the difference in cold tolerance of the same pear cultivar in two regions.

IntroductionPain, comorbid fatigue and sleep disturbances are common and distressing symptoms for patients with advanced cancer, negatively impacting their quality of life. Clinical guidelines recommend non-pharmacological interventions, including acupuncture and massage, for pain management in adult patients with cancer in adjunct to conventional care. However, high-quality evidence about the comparative effectiveness and long-term durability of these therapies for symptom management is limited.Methods and analysisWe describe the design of a two-arm, parallel group, multicentre randomised controlled trial that investigates the use of acupuncture versus massage for musculoskeletal pain among 300 patients with diverse types of advanced cancer. The primary aim is to evaluate the long-term effectiveness (26 weeks from randomisation) of acupuncture vs massage for pain (primary outcome) and comorbid symptoms (fatigue, sleep disturbance and quality of life). The secondary aim is to identify patient-level demographic characteristics (eg, sex, race, age), clinical factors (eg, insomnia, pain severity) and psychological attributes that are associated with a greater reduction in pain for either acupuncture or massage. Patients will receive weekly acupuncture or massage treatments for 10 weeks, followed by monthly booster sessions up to 26 weeks. The primary endpoint will be the change in worst pain intensity score from baseline to 26 weeks. We will collect validated patient-reported outcomes at multiple time points over 26 weeks.Ethics and disseminationThe Institutional Review Board at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York approved this protocol. Results will be disseminated via peer-reviewed scientific journals and conference presentations. Our findings will help patients and healthcare providers make informed decisions about incorporating non-pharmacological treatments to manage pain for patients with advanced cancer.Trial registration numberNCT04095234.

BackgroundAs the incidence of H1N1 increases, the lay public may turn to the Internet for information about natural supplements for prevention and treatment. ObjectiveOur objective was to identify and characterize websites that provide information about herbal and natural supplements with information about H1N1 and to examine trends in the public’s behavior in searching for information about supplement use in preventing or treating H1N1. MethodsThis was a retrospective observational infodemiology study of indexed websites and Internet search activity over the period January 1, 2009, through November 15, 2009. The setting is the Internet as indexed by Google with aggregated Internet user data. The main outcome measures were the frequency of “hits” or webpages containing terms relating to natural supplements co-occurring with H1N1/swine flu, terms relating to natural supplements co-occurring with H1N1/swine flu proportional to all terms relating to natural supplements, webpage rank, webpage entropy, and temporal trend in search activity. ResultsA large number of websites support information about supplements and H1N1. The supplement with the highest proportion of H1N1/swine flu information was a homeopathic remedy known as Oscillococcinum that has no known side effects; supplements with the next highest proportions have known side effects and interactions. Webpages with both supplement and H1N1/swine flu information were less likely to be medically curated or authoritative. Search activity for supplements was temporally related to H1N1/swine flu-related news reports and events. ConclusionsThe prevalence of nonauthoritative webpages with information about supplements in the context of H1N1/swine flu and the increasing number of searches for these pages suggest that the public is interested in alternatives to traditional prevention and treatment of H1N1. The quality of this information is often questionable and clinicians should be cognizant that patients may be at risk of adverse events associated with the use of supplements for H1N1.
