Abstract With the COVID-19 pandemic came what media has deemed the “port congestion pandemic”. Intensified by the pandemic, the commonplace anchoring of high-tonnage ships causes a substantial geomorphologial footprint on the seabed outside marine ports globally, but isn’t yet quantified. We present the first characterisation of the footprint and extent of anchoring in a low congestion port in New Zealand-Aotearoa, demonstrating that high-tonnage ship anchors excavate the seabed by up to 80 cm, with the impacts preserved for at least 4 years. The calcuated volume of sediment displaced by one high-tonnage ship (> 9000 Gross Tonnage) on anchor can reach 2800 m3. Scaled-up globally, this provides the first estimates of the footprint of anchoring to the coastal seabed, worldwide. Seafloor damage due to anchoring has far-reaching implications for already stressed marine ecosystems and carbon cycling. As seaborne trade is projected to quadruple by 2050, the poorly constrained impacts of anchoring must be considered to avoid irreversible damage to marine habitats.

On inner continental shelves, a variety of coarse grained bedforms, such as gravel dunes, are shaped by hydrodynamic and morphodynamic processes. The formation and evolution of bedforms reflect a balance between seabed and coastal morphology, sediment type and availability, and regional hydrodynamics. Yet, observing bedform evolution directly in the marine environment is rare, mostly due to the lack of repeat seafloor mapping surveys. In this study we use repeat bathymetry from 3 surveys over 4 years from the western Cook Strait/Te Moana-o-Raukawakawa region, New Zealand/Aotearoa. We integrate seabed morphology characterisation with sediment classification and regional hydrodynamic modelling, to investigate the evolution of gravel dunes under multi-directional current conditions. The repeat seafloor mapping reveals morphological changes to plan-view dune geometry and bifurcation of crestlines, with maximum observed vertical changes up to 3 m at water depths between 60 and 80 m. However, no dune migration was detected. Our hydrodynamic model shows that the most prominent morphological changes over the gravel dunes are spatially correlated with eddy formation, and high multi-directional near-bottom currents, reaching maximum speeds of ∼4 m s−1 and bottom stress of >25 N m−2 in each tidal cycle. We demonstrate that the average hydrodynamic conditions in this region are capable of mobilising coarse-grained sediment (i.e., sand to gravel), indicating that the observed morphological changes over multi-year time scales are a result of continuous remobilisation by currents, rather than extreme or storm events. Our findings demonstrate the highly dynamic nature of the seabed in Cook Strait, and the need for regular, repeat mapping surveys to ensure up-to-date seabed morphology information.

Recycled sources of phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N), such as struvite extracted from wastewater, have the potential to substitute conventional manufactured fertilizers and mitigate environmental problems such as water eutrophication or the depletion of non-renewable resources. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of struvite as a nitrogenous and phosphate fertilizer in the Spanish Mediterranean region. Two experiments were carried out using struvite recovered from sewage sludge and different representative soils from the area. Since knowing the rates at which their nutrients are released is key for efficient use, experiment I determined the struvite N-releasing rate for 16 weeks. Experiment II studied the effect of different struvite doses (50, 100, 200 kg P2O5 ha−1) on crop growth compared to superphosphate + ammonium nitrate. The results indicated N-releasing rates that fall in line with a slow-release fertilizer. More than 20% of applied struvite-N was unavailable for plants or in the longer term, which suggests struvite fractionation as the most efficient application method. Struvite showed similar fertilization capacity, which was even better at some points, than conventional mineral fertilization, plus adequate plant growth and good nutrient concentration at the 50 kg P2O5 ha−1 dose. Based on this study, struvite can be considered an interesting and effective option for sustainable fertilization in the Mediterranean region.

The shallow marine environment represents a region of high biological productivity, ecological diversity, and complex oceanographic conditions, and often supports various human activities and industries. Mapping of the seafloor in shallow marine environments reveals seafloor features in detail, shedding light on a range of natural and anthropogenic processes. We present a high-resolution (2-m) multibeam dataset, combined with geologic samples that reveals a complete map of the seafloor from the land-water interface to ∼350 m water depth within Queen Charlotte Sound/Tōtaranui (QCS) and Tory Channel/Kura Te Au (TC), Marlborough Sounds, New Zealand. These data reveal that the seafloor geomorphology and distribution of natural and anthropogenic features varies spatially from the inner QCS to the Cook Strait. Tidal currents play a large role in the erosion, transport, and deposition of sediments in QCS and TC. The distribution and depth of seafloor scouring suggests that tidal flow is locally intensified by coastal geometry and bathymetric barriers, resulting in concentrated scouring where tidal flow is restricted or redirected. In addition, superimposed bedforms reflect localized variations in flow direction that have likely developed across a range of spatial and temporal scales. Evidence for extensive seafloor fluid expulsion is preserved in > 8500 pockmarks mainly located within the inner and central QCS. The size and spatial distribution of pockmarks suggest multiple fluid sources in the region. The cumulative anthropogenic footprint on the seafloor within QCS represents 6.4 km2 (∼1.5%) of the total seafloor area and is predominantly related to maritime activities including anchor dragging (47.5%) and mooring blocks (24%). This study provides a unique example of the information that can be revealed by a comprehensive survey programme that mapped from the land-water interface to the subtidal zone. Results presented in this study form a robust basis upon which to develop improved hydrodynamic models and benthic habitat maps and to assess the full extent of anthropogenic activities in the shallow marine realm.

The effect of integrated and organic management on the levels of dehydrogenase and alkalyne phosphomonosterase (EC 3.1.3.1) activities was determined in a horticultural soil during a four year crop rotation, finding no statistically-significant differences. Since soil tillage and fertilization were similar, the absence of effects suggests that the well-reasoned use of small rates of agrochemicals in the integrated management for weed and pest control may have negligible effects on soil microbiological activity.

In the sustainable organic waste management context, this study was carried out to explore the potential of easily available composts and organic by-products for Pinus halepensis forestry in Mediterranean areas. The study consisted in four experiments using locally abundant organic waste: experiments I and IV evaluated their suitability as fertilizers for nurseries and pine replanting respectively; experiment II considered vermicompost efficiency as a root-growth promoter; experiment III assessed the aptitude of organic waste as a component of forestry substrates. Different plant measurements, morphological attributes and analytical determinations were used to assess seedling quality and to evaluate substrates and fertilizers' aptitude. Fertilization experiments run under nursery conditions showed that organic waste produced plantlets with similar morphological and nutritional states to mineral products with good quality standards. In pine replanting, organic fertilization clearly increased soil organic matter levels, enhancing soil nutritional and structural conditions. When evaluating different mixtures as substrate, no large differences appeared among treatments, except for the seedlings grown in virgin or recycled coconut fiber, where greater aerial development was achieved. Further research is needed to comprehend why the use of vermicompost as a root-growth promoter did not produce the expected effects. The obtained results indicate that organic by-products and composts can substitute the mineral fertilizers and substrates usually employed in the Mediterranean Region in P. halepensis forestry to contribute to develop a local circular economy.

Severe problems are caused by site burning of rice straw in Valencia, the third largest Spanish city. Removal, incorporation or composting are being tested as alternatives to burning, and the changes they produce in selected soil biological properties have been studied in two field trials. One compares removal, burning and incorporation the straw, and a second evaluates the application of straw-derived compost for rice production. No statistically-significant effects on the measured indicators of biological activity were found in either experiment, indicating that management-induced changes are small. Unexpectedly, burning did not affect negatively enzyme activities or microbial biomass contents since there were no differences between treatments, or usual levels were recovered in a few months. The changes induced by straw removal or incorporation were also not statistically significant. When straw-derived compost applications were assayed, dehydrogenase activity was slightly variable and apparently unaffected by N and compost rates or compost/mineral N combinations, but phosphomonosterase activity seems to increase parallel to compost to mineral N ratio.

Clinoform depositional features along the Iberian Mediterranean margin are investigated in this study, with the aim of establishing the causes of their varied shapes and other characteristics. We have analyzed the broad-scale margin physiography and seismic stratigraphic patterns based on high-resolution bathymetric data and previously interpreted seismic data. In addition, we have evaluated regional supply conditions and the uplift-subsidence regime of the different shelf sectors. The upper Quaternary record is strongly dominated by shelf-margin regressive wedges affected by the prevailing 100 ka cyclicity. However, the margins exhibit considerable lateral variability, as the result of the balance between the amount of sediment supply and the uplift-subsidence relationship. Three major shelf sectors with distinct morpho-sedimentary features have been defined. The relatively narrow northern shelves (Roses, La Planassa and Barcelona) are supplied by discrete river outlets that collectively constitute a linear source and are mainly affected by tectonic tilting. The wide middle shelves (Ebro Shelf, the Gulf of Valencia, and the Northern Arc) receive the sediment supply from the large Ebro River and other medium rivers. Although the tectonic regime changes laterally (strong subsidence in the north and uplift in the south), shelf growth is maintained by lateral advection of sediments. The southern shelves (the Southern Arc and the northern Alboran Shelf) are very abrupt and narrow because of the uplifting Betic Cordillera, and the torrential fluvial regimes that determine a very efficient sediment by-pass toward the deep basin. Submarine canyons deeply incised in the continental margin constitute a key physiographic feature that may enhance the transport of sediment to the deep sea or individualize shelf sectors with specific sedimentation patterns, as occurs in the Catalan margin.

Background: We investigated the impact of Indocyanine Green (ICG) angiography on reducing anastomotic leakage (AL) after elective left segmental colon resection, including transverse resection. While ICG is widely used in colorectal surgery to assess vascularization, its true effect on AL, particularly in left segmental resections, remains unclear. Study design: This retrospective, monocentric cohort study included patients undergoing left and transverse colon resection from January 2017 to July 2023. Patients were divided into ICG and no-ICG groups. The primary outcome was AL, with secondary outcomes including postoperative morbidity and length of stay. Results: Of the 115 patients enrolled, 53 received ICG and 63 did not. AL occurred in 6 patients in the no-ICG group, but none in the ICG group. No significant correlation was found between ICG use and other confounding factors. Postoperative length of stay was also shorter in the ICG group. Conclusions: The use of ICG was associated with a reduction in AL, with no cases in the ICG group. These findings suggest a potential benefit of ICG, warranting confirmation in future large-scale studies. Clinical trial registration: clinicaltrial.gov (NCT05981937).

Abstract Background Huntington’s disease (HD) is a motor and cognitive neurodegenerative disorder due to prominent loss of striatal medium spiny neurons (MSNs). Cell replacement using human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) derivatives may offer new therapeutic opportunities to replace degenerated neurons and repair damaged circuits. Methods With the aim to develop effective cell replacement for HD, we assessed the long-term therapeutic value of hESC-derived striatal progenitors by grafting the cells into the striatum of a preclinical model of HD [i.e., adult immunodeficient rats in which the striatum was lesioned by monolateral injection of quinolinic acid (QA)]. We examined the survival, maturation, self-organization and integration of the graft as well as its impact on lesion-dependent motor alterations up to 6 months post-graft. Moreover, we tested whether exposing a cohort of QA-lesioned animals to environmental enrichment (EE) could improve graft integration and function. Results Human striatal progenitors survived up to 6 months after transplantation and showed morphological and neurochemical features typical of human MSNs. Donor-derived interneurons were also detected. Grafts wired in both local and long-range striatal circuits, formed domains suggestive of distinct ganglionic eminence territories and displayed emerging striosome features. Moreover, over time grafts improved complex motor performances affected by QA. EE selectively increased cell differentiation into MSN phenotype and promoted host-to-graft connectivity. However, when combined to the graft, the EE paradigm used in this study was insufficient to produce an additive effect on task execution. Conclusions The data support the long-term therapeutic potential of ESC-derived human striatal progenitor grafts for the replacement of degenerated striatal neurons in HD and suggest that EE can effectively accelerate the maturation and promote the integration of human striatal cells.

Machine learning is usually associated with big data; however, experimental or clinical data are usually limited in size. The aim of this study was to describe how supervised machine learning can be used to classify astrocytes from a small sample into different morphological classes. Our dataset was composed of only 193 cells, with unbalanced morphological classes and missing observations. We combined classification trees and ensemble algorithms (boosting and bagging) with under sampling to classify the nuclear morphology (homogeneous, dotted, wrinkled, forming crumples, and forming micronuclei) of astrocytes stained with anti-LMNB1 antibody. Accuracy, sensitivity (recall), specificity, and F1 score were assessed with bootstrapping, leave one-out (LOOCV) and stratified cross-validation. We found that our algorithm performed at rates above chance in predicting the morphological classes of astrocytes based on the nuclear expression of LMNB1. Boosting algorithms (tree ensemble) yielded better classifications over bagging ones (tree bagger). Moreover leave-one-out and bootstrapping yielded better predictions than the more commonly used k-fold cross-validation. Finally, we could identify four important predictors: the intensity of LMNB1 expression, nuclear area, cellular area, and soma area. Our results show that a tree ensemble can be optimized, in order to classify morphological data from a small sample, even in the presence of highly unbalanced classes and numerous missing data.
