In this paper, we describe the geohazard-related elements of the Eastern Tyrrhenian Sea continental margin, situated between the 40° and 41° North latitude. These features were recognised principally through morphological analysis. The investigation utilized medium – and high-resolution digital models of the submarine landscape, produced within the framework of the Magic project (Marine Geohazard along Italian Coasts), and primarily focusing on the bathymetric range of 50–700 meters. The surveyed area encompasses a recently formed continental margin, which connects the internal segments of the Apennine fold-and-thrust belt, verging NE, to the Tyrrhenian Sea bathyal plain, a 3000-m-deep back-arc basin that has developed since the Middle-Late Miocene. Several classes of hazard-related elements have been identified offshore, primarily associated with high-gradient slopes and a large number of volcanic edifices and banks. These include canyon systems, erosive scarps, landslide complexes, fault – and volcanic-related features, such as the products of the volcanic edifices instability, which claim to varying degrees of geo-hazard. Additionally, bedforms, fluid seepages and creeping phenomena in the prodelta slopes suggest high morpho-tectonic and environmental dynamics.HighlightsThis article reports on the thematic maps developed along the Lazio – Campania offshore (Central-eastern Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy) within the framework of the Magic Project, based on geomorphological analysis of the HR Digital Elevation Model of the seafloor.Several classes of hazard-related elements have been identified offshore, mainly associated with high-gradient slopes, volcanic activity and intense morphodynamic processes.The entire suite of maps created in the context of the Magic Project serves as a valuable base of knowledge, extending to the national scale and benchmarks for future monitoring of critical sites and geo-hazard-related features, as well as for maritime spatial planning actions.

ABSTRACTThe MaGIC project (Marine Geohazard along the Italian Coasts) had the aim of mapping the geohazard in the Italian seas and resulted in the production of numerous maps covering parts of the Italian Seas. In this paper, we present the maps: ‘The submerged portions of the Aeolian volcanic islands and the north-eastern Sicilian margin’, located in the south-eastern Tyrrhenian Sea. Both areas are affected by active geological processes, which represent important geohazards elements. Inthe submarine parts of the Stromboli volcanoremobilization of volcaniclastic deposits occur along the Sciara del Fuoco, where small-scale instabilities may represent a source of geohazard. Hydrothermal activity occurs on Enarete and Enaretino conical seamounts. The north-eastern Sicilian margin has a narrow continental shelf. Numerous canyon heads indent the shelf and, sometimes, reach close to the coast. Canyons have often a retrogradational trend and further eventual landward shift through sliding can iendangeri coastal or offshore infrastructures. Many of the canyons connect with leveed channels with widespread sediment instability. In the Gioia Basin, some of the channels connect to form the Stromboli slope Valley. Volcanic unrest or local and regional earthquakes are proven to have caused submarine landslides and tsunamis.

ABSTRACTThis paper accompanies the Maps of Geohazard features of the Cilento and the Calabro-Tyrrhenian continental margin in the southern Tyrrhenian Sea (Italy). The main geohazard-related features were derived from extensive seafloor mapping through the collection of high-resolution multibeam data acquired during several oceanographic cruises. They encompass many fluids seepage features, fault scarps, landslides scars, gullies, channels, and canyons. Hazards related to coastal landslides and shelf-indenting canyons are very high in these sectors (especially in southern Calabria) due to active seismicity coupled with rapid uplift, high sedimentation rates and narrow or totally absent continental shelf, thus promoting a direct connection between steep slopes and coastal areas. In this setting, mass-wasting features can directly impact coastal or submarine infrastructures or indirectly create local tsunami waves, as observed in historical times. Moreover, this physiographic setting of the margin facilitates the transfer of marine litter toward deep-sea areas.

ABSTRACTWe present maps of geohazard features identified across north-western Sicily and Pantelleria in the framework of the Magic project (MArine Geohazard along Italian Coasts), which involved Italian marine geological researchers in 2007-2013. These seafloor features were recognized using high-resolution bathymetry data and rely on the morphological expression of the seafloor and shallow sub-surface processes. The north-western Sicily is a complex continental margin, affected by morphodynamic, depositional, and tectonic processes. The Egadi offshore is controlled by fault escarpments and alternating retreating and progradational processes. Ustica and Pantelleria submerged edifices show the effect of volcanic activity. The Ustica seafloor is interested in volcanic, tectonic, and gravitational instability processes, while the Pantelleria offshore underwent erosive-depositional processes and the effect of bottom currents. Two levels of interpretation are represented: the physiographic domain at a scale of 1:250.000 and the morphological units and morpho-bathymetric elements at a 1:100.000 scale.

ABSTRACTWe present a very high-resolution bathy-morphological map of the offshore sector around the Scoglio d’Affrica islet (northern Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy). The study area covers a sector of 45 km2, between 3 and 85 m depth. Its central part, i.e. the apex of the Ridge, is characterised by a flat or gently sloping seafloor, where three mud volcanoes, and 250 pockmarks are recognised. Differently, the western and eastern Ridge flanks are steeper and characterised by 60 quasi-rectilinear escarpments and small ridges, more than 20 morphological highs, and elongated channels occasionally floored by bedforms. The seafloor shallower than 40 m is covered by Posidonia oceanica, forming compact and continuous or fragmented meadows intermingled with sandy patches. The main map represents the bathy-morphological setting of the area, which is largely affected by fluid seepage, providing insights for habitat mapping and preliminary marine geohazard assessment due to the violent gas outburst from mud volcanoes.

Abstract By combining real-field observations and theoretical predictions, we describe role and relationships among north-propagating internal solitary waves (ISWs) generated by tidal currents in the Messina Strait (Mediterranean Sea), buoyancy deformation, sediment resuspension, and mixing effects. In particular, our results show that the presence of ISWs traveling along the Gioia Basin (north of the Strait) is not strictly related to seasonality. During winter, when the remote observation of ISWs from satellite is particularly rare due to the weak water column stratification, we observe elevation-type ISWs from hydrographic data. This finding reveals a different scenario with respect to the summer one, when the high stratified water column gives rise to depression-type north-propagating ISWs and the subsequent sea surface manifestations, detectable from satellite imagery. Moreover, our beam transmission observations and theoretical predictions of the induced near-bottom horizontal velocity suggest that these elevation-type ISWs induce sediment resuspension over the seafloor, as well as mixing effects as they break on the frontal slope nearby Capo Vaticano.

Marine litter is one of the most pervasive and fast-growing aspects of contamination in the global ocean, and has been observed in every environmental setting, including the deep seafloor where little is known about the magnitude and consequences of the problem. Submarine canyons, the main conduits for the transport of sediment, organic matter and water masses from shallow to abyssal depths, have been claimed to be preferential pathways for litter transport and accumulation in the deep sea. This is supported by ongoing evidence of large litter piles at great water depths, highlighting efficient transfer via canyons. The aim of this article is to present an overview of the current knowledge about marine litter in submarine canyons, taking a geological, process-based point of view. We evaluate sources, transport mechanisms and deposition of litter within canyons to assess the main factors responsible for its transport and accumulation in the deep sea. Few studies relate litter distribution to transport and depositional processes; nevertheless, results from available literature show that canyons represent accumulation areas for both land-based and maritime-based litter. Particularly, accumulation of fishing-related debris is mainly observed at the canyon heads and walls and is related to fishing activities carried out in and adjacent to canyons, while transport and accumulation of general waste and plastic along canyon axes can be related to different mechanisms, encompassing enhanced bottom currents, dense water cascading and turbidity currents, and is related to the proximity of canyons to shore. Global assessment of canyons exposure to riverine plastic inputs and fishing-related debris indicates varying susceptibility of canyons to litter, also highlighting that most of the canyons prone to receive large amounts of anthropogenic debris have not yet been surveyed. Considering that litter research in canyons is still in its infancy, several knowledge gaps need to be filled before the role of canyons as litter traps and the implication for benthic ecosystems can be fully understood.

Coralline algal beds are comprised of biogenic calcareous formations considered a habitat of high conservation interest, hosting a high great biodiversity. To assess the status of this habitat in the Italian seas, we report results from a systematic analysis of the available scientific literature. Italian rhodolith/maerl beds are reported on 31 Italian sites mostly located around islands, shoals, banks, terraces, and gentley sloping shelves, from 9 m to 130 m water depth (with a mean depth of about 56 m). The dominant species occurring in the Italian submarine sites are Phymatolithon calcareum and Lithothamnion corallioides, with a rich associated fauna including sponges, bryozoans, hydrozoans, polichaetes, molluscs, amphipods, gastropods, echinoderms. Despite the high biodiversity characterizing the Italian rhodolith/maerl beds, only seven submarine sites hosting this sensitive habitat are part of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). This evidence highlights the need for actions focused on the implementation of effective management and proper conservation measures to preserve such precious habitats. Protection of this habitat cannot be effectively provided without access to multidisciplinary data (e.g., geospatial, biological, geophysical, geomorphological data) capable of assessing its spatial distribution and biological characteristics over wide areas. An increased research effort to improve the production of fine-scale distribution maps and monitoring activities is therefore needed.

In recent years, the introduction of alien and invasive marine species in the Mediterranean Sea has rapidly increased. Laonome triangularis is a sabellid worm, native to the Australian coasts. Its first record in the Mediterranean Sea dates back to 2009 and, in this area, it is currently labeled as an allochthonous species. In the present work, we report the fìrst record of this polycheate in Italian waters and we provide some diagnostic features that are useful to identify the species.

Analyses of benthic foraminiferal assemblages were carried out on sediment samples collected in the Gulf of Patti (NE Sicily, Tyrrhenian Sea), where high sedimentation rates in front of the Mazzarrà River led to the growth of a prodelta. The study aimed to assess the spatial distribution of benthic foraminiferal assemblages and sediment grain size along different sectors of this prodelta to define any relationship between the foraminiferal assemblages, the environmental gradients and the sedimentary processes. In particular, we focused on the role of the highly energetic impulsive torrential inputs that dominate the depositional environment and likely affect food supply and its control on the foraminiferal density and biodiversity. The dominance of opportunistic agglutinated taxa associated with hyaline eutrophic species is a distinctive character likely related to organic matter enrichment and physical disturbance associated with inputs from torrential rivers.

Living (rose Bengal stained) and dead benthic foraminiferal assemblages were studied from 23 stations located between 60 and 670 m depth along the Gioia Canyon and the adjacent continental shelf and slope (Southern Tyrrhenian Sea). The aim of this study is to investigate the relationships among sedimentary processes, hydrological patterns and benthic foraminiferal distribution, in a highly dynamic environment. High sedimentation rates on the shelf and occasional turbidity flows along the canyon, lead to unstable environmental conditions at the seafloor that reflect on the microbenthic community influencing faunal density, diversity, species composition and distribution inside the sediment. The foraminiferal distribution seems to be controlled by sedimentary processes, nutrient supply and organic matter recycling, which in turn are strongly controlled by the seasonal variability of riverine inputs and current dynamics in the Gulf of Gioia. From the inner shelf to the upper continental slope (550 m depth), the living foraminiferal assemblage is dominated by agglutinated taxa, likely favored by the high terrigenous supply. Frequent eutrophic taxa ( Valvulineria bradyana and Nonionella turgida ) tolerant high turbidity ( Leptohalysis scottii ,) and low oxygen ( Bolivina spp. and Bulimina spp.) are recorded on the edge of the inner shelf, where channeling, deposition of coastal deposits and occasional sediment gravity flows occur. In the outer sector of the shelf a turnover of species is observed; L . scottii replaced by the opportunistic species Reophax scorpiurus , and taxa indicative of high energy conditions ( Cassidulina spp.) become dominant in association with mesotrophic species like Globocassidulina subglobosa . Along the continental slope, lower sedimentation rates and more stable environmental conditions support richer and more diversified foraminiferal assemblage. The abundance of Bulimina marginata indicates eutrophic conditions at the shallower station (300 m depth) whereas at greater depth (550 m) typical open slope species dominate ( Gyroidina spp., Uvigerina mediterranea ). Within the Gioia Canyon, benthic assemblage indicates environmental conditions similar to those observed in other Mediterranean and extra-Mediterranean canyons. The assemblage is characterized by eutrophic and low oxygen taxa ( Bolivina spp., Bulimina spp.) in relation to periodical fluxes of sediment and organic matter. Similar relationships arise from the analysis of dead foraminiferal assemblages. However, the comparison between living and dead faunas highlight compositional and structural changes related to taphonomic processes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
