36. Flowering phenology and trap pollination of the rare endemic plant Ceropegia thaithongiae in montane forest of northern Thailand

Abstract

Although Ceropegia species are well known for their complex pitfall flowers that temporarily imprison their pollinators, various aspects of their pollination ecology are still unknown. This study investigated flowering phenology, functional floral traits, and insect visitation in a natural population of a rare endemic lithophyte, Ceropegia thaithongiae Kidyoo. Flowering of C. thaithongiae was not synchronous but staggered. Anthesis lasted mostly 1-2 days, but its duration was shorter in flowers with a pollinium inserted into the stigmatic chamber. Several different insects visited flowers, but only chloropid and milichiid flies were effective pollinators. At anthesis, the epithelial osmophores on the corolla lobes emitted a floral scent that was simple in composition. Nectar of high viscosity was exuded from the nectaries hidden behind the guide rails. When transported by an insect, the pollinarium was attached to bristles on the mouthparts. Size and shape of the thin pellucid margin of the pollinium enable it to fit into the stigmatic chamber in a lock-and-key arrangement. The pollen transfer efficiency was 6.8%. The plant's staggered flowering and pollination-induced ending of anthesis are advantageous in decreasing competition for pollinators when flower-visiting insects are scarce. Meme si les especes de Ceropegia sont bien connues pour leurs fleurs-pieges complexes qui emprisonnent de facon temporaire leurs pollinisateurs, plusieurs aspects de l'ecologie de leur pollinisation sont encore inconnus. Cette etude s'est penchee sur la phenologie de la floraison, les caracteristiques florales fonctionnelles et la frequentation par les insectes chez une population naturelle d'un lithophyte endemique rare, Ceropegia thaithongiae Kidyoo. La floraison de C. thaithongiae n'etait pas synchrone, mais etalee. L'anthese durait habituellement 1-2 jours, mais sa duree etait plus courte chez les fleurs portant une pollinie inseree dans la chambre stigmatique. Plusieurs insectes differents visitaient les fleurs, mais seules les Chloropides et les Milichiides etaient des pollinisateurs efficaces. A l'anthese, les osmophores epitheliaux sur les lobes des corolles emettaient une odeur florale simple dans sa composition. Un nectar de haute viscosite exsudait des nectaires caches derriere les guides. Lorsque transporte par un insecte, le pollinaire etait attache aux poils des pieces buccales. La taille et la forme de la marge pellucide mince de la pollinie lui permettent de s'integrer a l'interieur de la chambre stigmatique comme une cle dans une serrure. L'efficacite du transfert de pollen etait de 6,8 %. La floraison etalee des plantes et la fin de l'anthese provoquee par la pollinisation sont avantageuses en diminuant la competition pour les pollinisateurs lorsque les insectes visiteurs des fleurs sont rares. Abstract

Abstract. Intraspecific variation in plants is a major ecological mechanism whose local determinants are still poorly understood. In particular, the relationship between this variation and human practices may be key to understanding human–nature relationships. We argue that it is necessary to consider how human practices both influence and depend on the phenotypic variability of species of interest. Arnica montana (arnica) is a good model to study the complex interactions between human actions and plant phenotype, as (i) its ecological niche is shaped by human management actions and (ii) its variability has consequences for harvesters. Using a functional trait approach, we examined feedback loops linking management actions, plant phenotype and harvesting practices. In 27 sites in southeastern France, we measured vegetative and reproductive functional traits of arnica of interest for harvesters, and recorded management actions (grazing; mowing) and ecological variables (including height of surrounding vegetation and tree cover). We examined their effects on plant traits with linear mixed models and used path analysis to test if the effects of human management on traits are mediated by the height of surrounding vegetation. Management actions affected functional traits of arnica. Biomass removal practices (grazing, mowing) were associated with smaller plants producing smaller leaves with reduced specific leaf area. We uncovered the core role of the height of surrounding vegetation in determining this phenotype. Tree cover was associated with reduced flowering. The observed intraspecific variation in response to management actions differentially impacts the two main harvesting practices. Flower-head harvesting depends on reproductive traits that are not impacted by mowing (which is done in winter) but adversely affected by tree cover. In contrast, traits associated with large biomass under tree cover or with high surrounding vegetation are favourable for whole-plant harvesters. Our trait-based approach unveiled clear links between management actions and plant phenotype, with impacts on both vegetative and reproductive traits. These changes induced by management also affect the practices of harvesters. We thus demonstrated a feedback loop between human actions and plant phenotype and provided a novel perspective on human-related causes and consequences of plant intraspecific variability.
