Opiate overdose is a significant cause of mortality among injection drug users (IDUs) in the United States (US). Opiate overdose can be reversed by administering naloxone, an opiate antagonist. Among IDUs, prevalence of witnessing overdose events is high, and the provision of take-home naloxone to IDUs can be an important intervention to reduce the number of overdose fatalities. The Drug Overdose Prevention and Education (DOPE) Project was the first naloxone prescription program (NPP) established in partnership with a county health department (San Francisco Department of Public Health), and is one of the longest running NPPs in the USA. From September 2003 to December 2009, 1,942 individuals were trained and prescribed naloxone through the DOPE Project, of whom 24% returned to receive a naloxone refill, and 11% reported using naloxone during an overdose event. Of 399 overdose events where naloxone was used, participants reported that 89% were reversed. In addition, 83% of participants who reported overdose reversal attributed the reversal to their administration of naloxone, and fewer than 1% reported serious adverse effects. Findings from the DOPE Project add to a growing body of research that suggests that IDUs at high risk of witnessing overdose events are willing to be trained on overdose response strategies and use take-home naloxone during overdose events to prevent deaths.

Background and Objectives: Congenital syphilis (CS) is increasing in the United States and is associated with intersecting social and structural determinants of health. This study aimed to delineate birthing parent characteristics associated with CS in an adjusted model. Methods (n = 720): People diagnosed with syphilis during pregnancy from 2017 to 2018 who were interviewed and linked to infants in the California state surveillance system were included (herein, "birthing parents"). Sociodemographic and clinical CS risk factors informed a stepwise multivariable logistic regression model in which the outcome of interest was infants born with CS. CS prevention continuums delineated the proportion of pregnant people with syphilis who completed steps (e.g., prenatal care entry, syphilis testing, treatment) needed to prevent CS; the outcome was delivering an infant without CS. We stratified continuums by homelessness and methamphetamine use to explore differences in CS outcomes. Results: Of 720 birthing parents, 245 (34%) delivered an infant with CS. Although CS was initially associated with homelessness (odds ratio [OR] = 2.5, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.6, 4.0) and methamphetamine use (OR = 2.1, 95% CI: 1.4, 3.1), the addition of prenatal care into a final adjusted model attenuated these associations to not significant. In CS prevention continuums, delivering an infant without CS was less likely for people who reported methamphetamine use (p <.001) and/or homelessness (p <.001). However, when examining only those who received prenatal care, statistical differences for these predictors no longer existed. In the final adjusted model the following were associated with CS: no prenatal care (OR = 16.7, 95% CI: 9.2, 30.3) or late prenatal care (OR = 2.9, 95% CI: 1.9, 4.2); early stage of syphilis (OR = 2.6, 95% CI: 1.8, 3.7); living in Central California (OR = 2.1, 95% CI: 1.1, 4.2). Conclusions and Scientific Significance: This is the first analysis to explore birthing parent characteristics associated with delivering an infant with CS in an adjusted model. We demonstrate that prenatal care, when accessed, can result in effective CS prevention among people who are unhoused and/or using methamphetamine equally well compared to counterparts without these risk factors. The paper illustrates and discusses how the performance management systems in a UK local authority are transformed into a surveillance system. A case study analysis reveals that the surveillance is engendered by central government and enacted by senior managers who conform to policies demanding the introduction of strict performance management systems that dehumanize work processes because employees are deemed untrustworthy. The paper shows that employees resist this government rendered surveillance because they believe it undermines their interests as well as the interests of the public by damaging the quality of the services delivered. Clinical flow cytometry is a reliable methodology for whole blood cell phenotyping for different applications. The BD FACSLyric™ system comprises a flow cytometer available in different optical configurations, BD FACSuite™ Clinical software, and optional BD FACS™ Universal Loader. BD FACSuite Clinical software used with BD™ FC Beads and BD CS&T Beads enable universal setup for performance QC, instrument control, data acquisition/storage, online/offline data analysis, and instrument standardization. BD Biosciences sponsored the clinical evaluation of the BD FACSLyric 10-color configuration at seven clinical sites using delinked and de-identified blood specimens from HIV-infected and uninfected subjects to enumerate T-, B-, and NK-lymphocytes with the BD Multitest™ reagents (BD Multitest IMK kit and BD Multitest 6-color TBNK). Samples were analyzed on the BD FACSLyric system with BD FACSuite Clinical software, and on the BD FACSCanto™ II system with BD FACSCanto clinical software and BD FACS 7-Color Setup beads. For equivalency between methods, data (n = 362) were analyzed with Deming regression for absolute count and percentage of lymphocytes. Results gave R2 ≥0.98, with slope values ≥0.96, and slope ranges between 0.90–1.05. The percent (%) bias values were <10% for T- and NK cells and <15% for B- cells. The between-site (n = 4) total precision was tested for 5 days (2 runs/day), and gave %coefficient of variation below 10% for absolute cell counts. The stability claims were confirmed (n = 186) for the two BD Multitest reagents. The reference intervals were re-established in male and female adults (n = 134). The analysis by gender showed statistically significant differences for CD3+ and CD4+ T-cell counts and %CD4. In summary, the BD FACSLyric and the BD FACSCanto II systems generated comparable measurements of T-, B-, and NK-cells using BD Multitest assays. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper gives a voice to a range of community and individual stakeholders who would not generally be heard in the conventional town planning process. We present a methodological technique, described as creative prototyping, that has at its heart, the capability to enable full stakeholder inclusivity into the future imagining of the smart city. Actively involving these individuals and community representatives in the research process enables deeper understanding of how technology and people can interact productively to create smart cities that are socially inclusive while still being commercially relevant. The research data for this paper are drawn from the findings of a workshop conducted by the authors that utilised Science Fiction Prototyping andLego Serious Play. This research activity was driven by questions focusing upon the current complex interplay and tensions of technology and the UK’s physical high street. We first explore these issues theoretically in previous literature and then drawn upon this review to analyse the outcomes of the workshop. Three themes emerge from this analysis that have operational and strategic relevance to the development of future high streets; the importance of ever present but invisible technology, the forefronting of people in the smart city and the need for wide-ranging stakeholder input and participation into planning. The findings also illustrate that not all future imaginings of the retail high street are immediately practical or realistically applicable. However, in examining the many issues facing the current high street and in negotiating the multiplicity of voices with their competing demands and expectations, we offer the conclusion that the future smart city must become a place of truly shared sociality – rather than just mere proximity, customised convenience or a concentration point for multiple forms of entertainment. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine how independent social and commercial activities have developed in response to the perceived decline in the UK High Street and in response to the challenges of increasing digital retailing opportunities. This examination is undertaken through the lens of the social supply chain as a means to understanding, suggesting and expanding on current research regarding retailing and the UK High Street. The authors reveal some of the challenges being posed by the changing patterns of growth and consumption in cities and couple these with shifting supply chain trends. Design/methodology/approach – A case study approach is used to explore the rapid advances and influence of digital technologies on businesses operating on the primary business street of suburban centre, towns or cities (described in the UK collectively as the “high street”). The research is conducted through the analytical lens of the social supply chain. Findings – Theoretically extending the “social” in the social supply chain, the authors illustrate the usefulness of the nuanced concept of the “social supply chain” with two related strategies concerning delivery and balance. These strategies are themselves interlinked with the actions of co-creation, co-production and co-consumption. Examples of social supply chain strategies presented include retail businesses giving away something as an incentive, where the underlying requirement from the customer is that they will bring their own specialist product, skill or social network to a specified location (real or virtual). Originality/value – For the purpose of this paper, the authors use two distinct strategies relating to delivery and balancing and in relation to the actions of co-creation, co-production and co-consumption to emphasise and analyse changes currently occurring in the UK High Street. The authors take a social supply chain management (SCM) perspective to undertake a systematic critical review of the various recent efforts undertaken by local governments, communities and trader groups to revitalise the High Street. Purpose -- The purpose of this study is to gain insight into craft and do-it-yourself (DIY) communities of practice (COPs) and how the use of technology provides ways for participants to connect, share and create. Gaining deeper insights into the practices of these communities may provide new opportunities to utilise within this flourishing domain. Design/methodology/approach -- Qualitative methods were adopted to collect data and analysed through an interpretivist lens. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with members of craft and DIY COPs to gain a deep understanding of the broader ethnographic study. Existing theoretical perspectives surrounding COPs have been applied to further current perspectives. Findings -- Findings from this study suggest that being part of a COP allows participants to connect to others, build creative enterprise and learn or enhance skills. Insights gained from this study indicate some of the detailed ways in which the application of technology redefines craft and DIY COPs. Research limitations/implications -- This study provides a succinct exploration of a vast and fluid domain; if presented with more time and wider resources, the research would include further exploration of virtual COPs. Originality/value -- The investigation provides a rich insight into the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) within craft and DIY COPs. The application of theoretical perspectives from the area of Information Systems (IS) and Technology Management to this domain is regarded as an original research and furthers knowledge in these areas. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of the digital culture on football supporters through analysis of official and unofficial websites and media reports. At first glance it would appear that technology has brought about greater opportunities to communicate, to share views which previously could not be widely published, and to organise against the commercial power of the large football clubs. However, surveillance, censorship and control continue to impact on supporters to restrict and ultimately prevent the ideal speech situation that is necessary to empower fans and promote greater participation in their clubs. Current media manipulation and corporate interests restrict and alienate fans who often have more of a historically constituted (over generations) sense of ownership and culture within their local clubs. Design/methodology/approach – A critical social theory approach is adopted to examine structures and processes related to communication between fans, the media, football clubs and the public. Habermas' theory is draw upon using the concepts of "colonization of the Lifeworld" and "communicative action" to inform a theme and discourse analysis of official and independent football club websites and media reports. How corporate interests (the system) are manipulating public opinion and freedom to speak openly within an overall goal of profit maximization for club owners and the large media corporations are explored. Findings – Although steps to enable free communication have been made we are still a long way off supporters having a powerful enough voice to organise against the commercial power of the large football clubs and media conglomerates. The ideal speech situation remains elusive and the hegemonic state remains unchallenged. Football supporters are increasingly constructed as "consumers" and the ultimate power remains in mass media and broadcast rather than personal "narrowcast". Originality/value – This paper extends debate on the impact of the developing "digital culture" focusing on football supporters, a specific and prevalent community within British society. Background and Objectives: The Tick programme of the National Heart Foundation (NHF) is the longest standing voluntary front of pack signpost nutrition logo in New Zealand. It provides a platform for collaboration with the food industry to encourage development of healthier products. This study evaluated the impact of the Tick programme on sodium in processed food.Methods and Study Design: Fifty-two Tick programme products from food categories known to contribute substantially to sodium intake were identified. Sales volumes (kg) from January 2011 to December 2013 were multiplied by changes in sodium content over that time, producing an estimate of programme impact. Five semi-structured interviews with industry representatives were conducted, to look at other influences for sodium reduction, and themes identified through methods of thematic analysis.Results: Over the period, the Tick programme influenced food companies to remove approximately 16 tonnes of salt through the reformulation and formulation of 52 Tick-approved breakfast cereals, edible oil spreads, cooking sauces and processed poultry products. Other factors influencing sodium reduction reported by company representatives included increased consumer and industry interest in healthier product nutrition profiles and other sodium reduction programmes targeting reformulation/formulation.Conclusions: The Tick remains a credible and well-recognized brand and may provide a competitive edge for participating food manufacturers in the current market. The Tick programme is effective in influencing industry to reduce sodium in processed foods in New Zealand. The combined impact of the Tick and other NHF programmes has the potential to reduce population sodium intake and improve health outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
