However, the protective effect of antiplatelet agents is counterbalanced by an increase of bleeding events that impacts on patients’ mortality and morbidity. Over the last years, great efforts have been made toward personalized antithrombotic strategies according to the individual bleeding and ischemic risk profile, aiming to maximizing the net clinical benefit. The development of risk scores, consensus definitions, and the new promising artificial intelligence tools, as well as the assessment of platelet responsiveness using platelet function and genetic testing, are now part of an integrated approach to tailored antithrombotic management. Moreover, novel strategies are available including dual antiplatelet therapy intensity and length modulation in patients undergoing myocardial revascularization, the use of P2Y12 inhibitor monotherapy for long-term secondary prevention, the implementation of parenteral antiplatelet agents in high-ischemic risk clinical settings, and combination of antiplatelet agents with low-dose factor Xa inhibitors (dual pathway inhibition) in patients suffering from polyvascular disease. This review summarizes the currently available evidence and provides an overview of the principal risk-stratification tools and antiplatelet strategies to inform treatment decisions in patients with cardiovascular disease.Keywords: antiplatelet therapy, cardiovascular disease, P2Y12 inhibitor, aspirin

BACKGROUND: Patients with severe aortic stenosis and a small aortic annulus are at risk for impaired valvular hemodynamic performance and associated adverse cardiovascular clinical outcomes after transcatheter aortic-valve replacement (TAVR). METHODS: We randomly assigned patients with symptomatic severe aortic stenosis and an aortic-valve annulus area of 430 mm2 or less in a 1:1 ratio to undergo TAVR with either a self-expanding supraannular valve or a balloon-expandable valve. The coprimary end points, each assessed through 12 months, were a composite of death, disabling stroke, or rehospitalization for heart failure (tested for noninferiority) and a composite end point measuring bioprosthetic-valve dysfunction (tested for superiority). RESULTS: A total of 716 patients were treated at 83 sites in 13 countries (mean age, 80 years; 87% women; mean Society of Thoracic Surgeons Predicted Risk of Mortality, 3.3%). The Kaplan-Meier estimate of the percentage of patients who died, had a disabling stroke, or were rehospitalized for heart failure through 12 months was 9.4% with the self-expanding valve and 10.6% with the balloon-expandable valve (difference, -1.2 percentage points; 90% confidence interval [CI], -4.9 to 2.5; P<0.001 for noninferiority). The Kaplan-Meier estimate of the percentage of patients with bioprosthetic-valve dysfunction through 12 months was 9.4% with the self-expanding valve and 41.6% with the balloon-expandable valve (difference, -32.2 percentage points; 95% CI, -38.7 to -25.6; P<0.001 for superiority). The aortic-valve mean gradient at 12 months was 7.7 mm Hg with the self-expanding valve and 15.7 mm Hg with the balloon-expandable valve, and the corresponding values for additional secondary end points through 12 months were as follows: mean effective orifice area, 1.99 cm2 and 1.50 cm2; percentage of patients with hemodynamic structural valve dysfunction, 3.5% and 32.8%; and percentage of women with bioprosthetic-valve dysfunction, 10.2% and 43.3% (all P<0.001). Moderate or severe prosthesis-patient mismatch at 30 days was found in 11.2% of the patients in the self-expanding valve group and 35.3% of those in the balloon-expandable valve group (P<0.001). Major safety end points appeared to be similar in the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Among patients with severe aortic stenosis and a small aortic annulus who underwent TAVR, a self-expanding supraannular valve was noninferior to a balloon-expandable valve with respect to clinical outcomes and was superior with respect to bioprosthetic-valve dysfunction through 12 months. Ischemic heart disease is the primary cause of cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality in both men and women. Strategies targeting traditional modifiable risk factors are essential – including hypertension, smoking, dyslipidemia and diabetes mellitus – particularly for atherosclerosis, but additionally for stroke, heart failure and some arrhythmias. However, challenges related to education, screening and equitable access to effective preventative therapies persist, and are particularly problematic for women around the globe and those from lower socioeconomic groups. The association of female-specific risk factors (e.g. premature menopause, gestational hypertension, small for gestational age births) with CVD provides a potential window for targeted prevention strategies. However, further evidence for specific effective screening and interventions is urgently required. In addition to population-level factors involved in increasing the risk of suffering a CVD event, efforts are leveraging the enormous potential of blood-based 'omics', improved imaging biomarkers and increasingly complex bioinformatic analytic approaches to strive toward more personalized early disease detection and personalized preventative therapies. These novel tactics may be particularly relevant for women in whom traditional risk factors perform poorly. Here we discuss established and emerging approaches for improving risk assessment, early disease detection and effective preventative strategies to reduce the mammoth burden of CVD in women. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) in women remains understudied, under-recognized, underdiagnosed and undertreated. Initiatives such as the Lancet Women and Cardiovascular Disease Commission help to identify sex and gender-related gaps in research, care and outcomes and to guide next steps in addressing them. This article highlights important aspects of the Lancet Commission report and expands on the evidence and proposed strategies for reducing the global burden of CVD in women. Furthermore, the article explores the benefits of cross-specialty collaborations for the treatment and prevention of CVD in women and discusses the impact of gender-related disparities in academic cardiology. Abstract Background In developing nations, myocardial infarction (MI) remains a significant contributor to deaths from sudden cardiac arrest, with diet playing a key role in its incidence through oxidative stress mechanisms. Although the connection between the Dietary Antioxidant Index (DAI) and cardiovascular diseases has been demonstrated in some studies, the relationship between DAI and MI has not been extensively explored. Therefore, this research aims to investigate this association. Methods We conducted a nested case-control study involving 156 MI cases and 312 healthy controls, utilizing data from the Fasa Adults Cohort Study (FACS), a population-based study of individuals aged 35–70 residing in Fasa, Iran, with 11,097 participants included at baseline. The DAI was determined by normalizing the intake values of six dietary vitamins and minerals, adjusting by subtracting the global mean, and then dividing by the global standard deviation. MI diagnosis was established by an experienced cardiologist using electronic medical records. Conditional logistic regression was employed to examine the association between DAI and MI. Results There were no significant differences between the case and control groups in terms of age (P = 0.96), gender distribution (P = 0.98), and education level (P = 0.38). In a multiple conditional logistic regression analysis, after adjusting for key variables—including body mass index (BMI), smoking status, education level, and serum levels of triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), total cholesterol (TC), fasting blood sugar (FBS), saturated fatty acids (SFA), and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA)—an inverse association was found between DAI and the risk of myocardial infarction (MI) [adjusted Odds Ratio (Adj OR) = 0.88, 95% Confidence Interval (CI): 0.85–0.92; P

Abstract A series of M/NiCo-Ferrite (M: Pt, Pd, Ru, and Rh) nanoparticles were successfully synthesized, through a facile sol–gel auto-combustion followed by impregnation-reduction approach, as a catalyst for hydrogen generation from hydrolysis of NaBH4. All synthesized samples were characterized by XRD, N2 adsorption–desorption method, ICP-OES, FE-SEM, and EDX analysis. Compared to the other samples, it was observed that the Rh/NiCo-Ferrite sample exhibited higher particle distribution and surface area. To evaluate the hydrogen generation rate, the hydrolysis was carried out at a temperature of 35 °C, with an aqueous solution containing 5 wt.% NaBH4 and 3 wt.% NaOH. The experimental findings indicate that the Rh/NiCo-Ferrite sample exhibited a superior rate of hydrogen generation, with an average value of 11,667 mL/min.gcat, compared to the other samples studied. Enhanced catalytic properties may be responsible for its high activity. In addition, the activation energy of hydrolysis of sodium borohydride over the Rh/NiCo-Ferrite sample was 54.5 kJ/mol which is lower than the activation energy of many Ferrite-based catalysts. Moreover, the re-usability test of the Rh/NiCo-Ferrite sample denoted a decline in the catalytic activity after 4 recycling experiments due to the alterations in morphology and the reduction in the quantity of active phase.

Abstract A leading cause of global warming is the increase of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions due to anthropogenic activities which prompts an urgent need for substantial reduction. Recently, CO2 absorption in deep eutectic solvents (DESs) has attracted scientific attention, because of their adaptability compared to traditional ionic liquids and aqueous amine solutions. This study employs the heating method to synthesize DESs using tetrapropylammonium bromide (TPAB) and formic acid (Fa) with molar ratios of TPAB-Fa (1:1) and TPAB-Fa (1:2). Absorption experiments by static method quantified CO2 solubility in the DESs under varied pressures and temperatures. TPAB-Fa (1:2) at 25.0 °C was the most efficient with the CO2 solubility of 0.218. Thermodynamic modeling was performed by employing the nonrandom two liquids activity coefficient model and the Peng–Robinson equation of state for the liquid and gas phases, respectively. The Henry’s law constant was determined from experimental data. CO2 physical absorption was confirmed via nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) analyses. TPAB-Fa (1:2), as the superior DES, exhibited regeneration efficiency of 99% after five absorption/desorption cycles.

Abstract Aim Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a prevalent chronic condition associated with significant pain, disability, and healthcare costs, particularly among the elderly population. Despite the considerable burden of KOA, effective treatment options for managing the condition’s underlying causes remain limited. This case-control study aims to investigate the relationship between dietary total antioxidant capacity (DTAC) and knee osteoarthritis. Methods This case-control study was conducted on 105 patients with confirmed KOA and 210 controls. KOA was diagnosed based on the American College of Rheumatology criteria. Dietary total antioxidant capacity (DTAC) was calculated based on the ferric-reducing antioxidant power method. Results The mean age and BMI of the participants were 53.6 ± 8.8 years old and 27.3 ± 2.7 kg/m2, respectively. The study participant’s DTAC score ranged from 3.56 to 25.32 with a mean and SD of 12.46 ± 5.12. In the crude model, individuals in the highest quartile of DTAC score had 71% lower odds of having knee osteoarthritis compared to those in the first quartile (OR: 0.29, 95%CI: 0.15 to 0.58, P-trend

Abstract Objective This study was designed to evaluate the impact of VLCKD on cardiovascular risk factors in patients with T2DM. Methods Until March 2024, extensive searches were conducted on PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, and other relevant databases. The purpose was to identify clinical trials examining the impact of VLCKD on glycemic control, lipid profile, and blood pressure. The GRADE (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation) method was used to assess the evidence’s degree of certainty. Results Our initial search found a total of 2568 records and finally 29 trials were included in final analysis. Abstract Background The dietary inflammatory index (DII) serves as a tool to assess the inflammatory impact of an individual’s diet. This study aimed to investigate the association between DII and some cardio-metabolic risk indices among patients with T2DM. Methods Data from the Hoveyzeh Cohort Study, encompassing 2045 adults with T2DM, were analyzed. DII scores were calculated based on food frequency questionnaires. Anthropometric measurements and biochemical tests were performed to assess cardio-metabolic risk factors. Results Higher DII scores were positively associated with elevated triglyceride levels, triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index, lipid accumulation product (LAP), anthropometric indices including a body shape index (ABSI), body roundness index (BRI), body mass index (BMI), hip, waist circumferences (WC), and waist-to-height ratio (all Ptrend < 0.05). Notably, no significant association was observed between DII and fasting blood sugar (FBS) levels (Ptrend > 0.05). Additionally, dietary intake analysis revealed a negative correlation between DII scores and intake of fiber, fruits, vegetables, legumes, fish, seafood, dairy products, magnesium, and vitamins A, C, D, and E (all Ptrend < 0.05). Conversely, higher DII scores were associated with increased consumption of red meat, processed meat, refined cereals, potatoes, and soft drinks (all Ptrend < 0.05). Conclusion This study underscores the critical link between dietary inflammation, assessed by the DII score, and a multitude of cardio-metabolic risk factors in patients with T2DM. Notably, while the study did not find a significant association between DII and fasting blood sugar levels, it identified robust associations with novel anthropometric and biochemical indices indicative of cardio-metabolic risk. These findings highlight the potential of dietary interventions as a cornerstone strategy for managing T2DM and mitigating its associated complications.

This study investigates bimetallic and multimetallic catalysts tailored for the reverse water gas shift (RWGS) reaction. Promoting with potassium and iron, while maintaining a constant copper content of 15 wt% on γ-alumina, revealed that bimetallic catalysts containing 7.5 wt% iron and 5 wt% potassium exhibit superior catalytic activity and stability. Among the multimetallic catalysts, the optimal composition was found to be in the 15 wt% Cu-5 wt% Fe-2.5 wt% K/γ-Al2O3 catalyst for the RWGS reaction. The prepared catalysts underwent assessments using various techniques such as N2 adsorption-desorption, XRD, H2-TPR, CO2-TPD, and FESEM. Stability assessments conducted over 72 hours showcased sustained long-term performance for the optimized catalysts, highlighting the influential role of the hierarchical structure. Mesopores extended the catalyst lifetime by reducing permeation limits, while macropores facilitated diffusion process, enhancing selectivity and stability. This hierarchical design also improved mass transfer, amplifying reaction rates. The synthesized catalysts exhibited exceptional specificity, demonstrating 100 % selectivity for the RWGS reaction. Particularly, under H2/CO2=1, these catalysts displayed remarkable carbon dioxide conversion rates, indicating potential for enhancing Cu-based catalysts in RWGS reactions by maximizing active sites.

Mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) syndromes are a group of heterogeneous genetic disorders in terms of genetic basis and clinical manifestations, ranging from mild to fatal forms. There are a number of applied or prospective treatment modalities for MPS, including bone marrow transplantation, enzyme replacement therapy, targeted gene therapy and substrate reduction therapy. Recently, CRISPR/Cas9 technology has emerged as a novel tool for several metabolic disorders, such as MPS. This review concentrates on the application of this technique in the treatment of MPS, particularly MPS I, and modeling of disease-causing mutations.

Background/Aims Colorectal cancer (CRC) and colorectal polyps are intimately linked, with polyps acting as precursors to CRC. Understanding the molecular mechanisms governing their development is crucial for advancing diagnosis and treatment. Employing a systems biology approach, we investigated the molecular similarities between polyp and CRC. Methods We analyzed gene expression profiles, protein-protein interactions, transcription factors, and gene ontology to identify common differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and unravel shared molecular pathways. Results Our analysis revealed 520 commonly dysregulated genes in polyps and CRC, serving as potential biomarkers and pivotal contributors to disease progression. Gene ontology analysis elucidated distinct biological processes associated with upregulated and downregulated DEGs in both conditions, highlighting common pathways, including signal transduction, cell adhesion, and positive regulation of cell proliferation. Moreover, protein-protein interaction networks shed light on subnetworks involved in rRNA processing, positive regulation of cell proliferation, mRNA splicing, and cell division. Transcription factor analysis identified major regulators and differentially expressed transcription factors in polyp and CRC. Notably, we identified common differentially expressed transcription factors, including ZNF217, NR3C1, KLF5, GATA6, and STAT3, with STAT3 and NR3C1 exhibiting increased expression. Conclusions This comprehensive analysis enriches our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying polyp formation and CRC development, providing potential targets for further investigation and therapeutic intervention. Our findings contribute substantively to crafting personalized strategies for refining the diagnosis and treatment of polyps and CRC.

Abstract In this study, a series of cobalt-based spinel ferrites catalysts, including nickel, cobalt, zinc, and copper ferrites, were synthesized using the sol–gel auto-combustion method followed by a chemical reduction process. These catalysts were employed for accelerating hydrogen generation via the sodium borohydride hydrolysis process. A continuous stirred tank reactor was used to perform catalytic reactor tests. All samples were subjected to analysis using XRD, FESEM, EDX, FTIR, and nitrogen adsorption–desorption techniques. The results revealed that the cobalt-based copper ferrite sample, Co/Cu-Ferrite, exhibited superior particle distribution, and porosity characteristics, as it achieved a high hydrogen generation rate of 2937 mL/min.gcat. In addition, the higher electrical donating property of Cu-Ferrite which leads to the increase in the electron density of the cobalt active sites can account for its superior performance towards hydrolysis of NaBH4. Using the Arrhenius equation and the zero-order reaction calculation, activation energy for the sodium borohydride hydrolysis reaction on the Co/Cu-Ferrite catalyst was determined to be 18.12 kJ/mol. This low activation energy compared to other cobalt-based spinel ferrite catalysts confirms the catalyst's superior performance as well. Additionally, the outcomes from the recycling experiments revealed a gradual decline in the catalyst's performance after each cycle during 4 repetitive cycles. The aforementioned properties render the Co/Cu-Ferrite catalyst an efficient catalyst for hydrogen generation through NaBH4 hydrolysis.

Abstract Background Oxidative stress after ischemic stroke contribute to neuronal cell injury. Unhealthy and unbalanced dietary patterns can increase the risk of several diseases, including stroke and cardiometabolic ones. However, the association between dietary total antioxidant capacity (DTAC) of antioxidant and stroke is controversial. Our study aimed to establish a correlation between DTAC and its impact on the occurrence of stroke. Methods This nested case–control study included 79 stroke cases and 158 healthy controls. We used data from the Fasa Adults Cohort Study (FACS) comprising 10,035 individuals at baseline. To assess the nutritional status of each individual, a 125-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) has been used to evaluate their dietary habits and intakes over the past year. DTAC was calculated using the ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) international databases. The stroke was confirmed by an experienced neurologist using standard imaging methods. Conditional logistic regression analyses were performed to evaluate the association between DTAC and stroke. Results The assessment of DTAC revealed that there was no statistically significant distinction between cases (mean ± SD: 5.31 ± 2.65) and controls (5.16 ± 2.80) with a p-value of 0.95. Even after adjusting for the potentially important confounding factors such as age, sex, event time, energy intake, smoking, hypertension, and diabetes, the association remains non-significant (adjusted odds ratio (OR) = 1.06, 95% CI: 0.94, 1.20, p-value = 0.33). Conclusions Our results did not confirm a significant link between DTAC and stroke risk. These findings emphasize the intricate interplay of factors influencing stroke risk and highlight the need for further research to unravel these relationships more comprehensively.

Abstract Background In the present systematic review and meta-analysis, the association of maternal exposure to the endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) with cardio-metabolic risk factors in children during childhood for the first time. Method The PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, and Web of Science databases were systematically searched, up to Feb 2023. In total 30 cohort studies had our inclusion criteria. Abstract In this cross-sectional investigation, the primary objective was to explore the correlation between the consumption of polyphenols and the likelihood of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in the adult population participating in the Hoveyzeh cohort. Data from the Hoveyzeh cohort study, part of the Persian Cohort Study, involving 10,009 adults aged 35–70, were analyzed. Exclusions were made for missing data, extreme energy intake, and liver cancer patients. Dietary habits were assessed using a food frequency questionnaire, and polyphenol intake was calculated using the Phenol Explorer database. Logistic regression analyses, adjusted for confounders, were performed to assess the relationship between polyphenol subclasses (total polyphenols, total flavonoids, phenolic acid, and lignin) and NAFLD. Gaucher disease (GD) is a metabolic disorder caused by mutations in the GBA1, located on 1q22. This gene encodes glucocerebrosidase (glucosylceramidase) enzyme. GD has a wide range of clinical manifestations from a perinatally lethal type to an asymptomatic form. While different types of targeted therapies and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation have been suggested as therapeutic options for patients with GD, success rates were not optimal. Recent advance in the CRISPR technology has raised the hope for treatment of metabolic disorders such as GD. This technology has also facilitated identification of the molecular mechanisms underlying pathologic events in this disorder. The current review addresses both mentioned aspects of application of CRISPR technology in the field of GD.

Background Appropriate treatment reduces the severity and duration of relapses in demyelinating diseases of Central Nervous System (CNS). If high-dose corticosteroids treatment fails, therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) is considered as a rescue treatment. Objectives This study aimed to investigate early clinical response and complications of TPE and prognostic factors in CNS demyelinating relapses. Design This prospective observational study was designed in a tertiary center during one year. Methods All adult patients diagnosed corticosteroid-resistant Multiple Sclerosis (MS), NeuroMyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder (NMOSD), idiotypic Transverse Myelitis or Clinical Isolated Syndrome relapses, were eligible. Clinical response is defined based on Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) at discharge. Clinical and laboratory complications recorded. Results Seventy-two patients were analyzed which 58.3% patients were female. MS was diagnosed for 61.1% of cases. Thirty-five patients (48.6%) responded and the mean differences of EDSS significantly decreased 0.60 score (CI95%:0.44-.77). Electrolyte imbalances and thrombocytopenia occurred in 80.6% and 55.6% of cases respectively and 40.3% of patients had systemic reactions. However, 26.4% patients experienced moderate to severe complications. In patients with moderate to severe disability, responders were younger (MD: 8.42 years, CI95%: 1.67-15.17) and had lower EDSS score at admission (median:6, IQR: 5.5-6 against 7.5 IQR: 6.5-8). The risk of failure was higher in active progressive MS patients compared with RRMS patients (OR: 6.06, CI 95%:1.37-26.76). Patients with thrombocytopenia were hospitalized more than others (MD: 1.5 days, CI 95%: 0-3). Females were more prone to hypokalemia and systemic reactions (OR: 3.11, CI 95%:1.17-8.24 and OR: 6.67, CI 95%:2.14-20.81 respectively). Conclusion The most common indication of TPE was corticosteroid-resistant severe MS relapses. About half of the patients presented an early clinical response. Lower disability, younger age and RRMS diagnosis are prognostic factors of better response. One out of four patients experienced moderate to severe complications, mainly electrolyte imbalances and systemic reactions. Appropriate interventions against these complications should be considered during TPE, especially in females.

Abstract Background Over the last decade, the results of several studies have indicated that adults' food preferences, consumption, and dietary choices vary depending on their genotype characteristics. However, the results of studies related to genes and polymorphisms involved in this phenomenon are contradictory. This study is a systematic review designed to evaluate the genetic determinants of food preferences. Methods This study was conducted following the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). Searches were conducted to identify articles testing the impact of genotypes on food choices, preferences, and intake in healthy adults. The search included all relevant keywords, and studies published between 1/1/1994 and October 2022 were considered. We assessed the quality of included studies and evaluated the risk of bias using the Newcastle–Ottawa Scale (NOS) for observational studies. Results A total of 8,510 records were identified through our search method, and finally, 50 studies were included in this study. The majority of the studies evaluated the association of genetic variants with preferences for macronutrients, sweet, bitter, and fatty foods. The results of our study suggest a significant correlation between TAS2R38 variants (rs713598, rs1726866, rs10246939) and bitter and sweet taste preferences. Additionally, we found a considerable association between the T102C polymorphism of the 5-HT2A receptor gene and a higher intake of protein, and rs1761667 (CD36) was associated with fat preference. Conclusion In conclusion, this study revealed a significant association between certain genetic variants and food preferences among adults.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to assess the connection between FTO rs9939609 (A/T) polymorphism and food preference. The study included 77 participants, 36 of whom were obese and had a low-calorie intake, and 41 non-obese participants with a high-calorie intake. Using a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ), the researchers calculated sweet and fatty food propensity scores. Genomic DNA was extracted from a peripheral blood sample from all participants, and FTO rs9939609 (A/T) polymorphism was assessed using standard methods. The study found no significant differences between the two groups in terms of sweet food preference (15.64 ± 10.53 in obese groups vs. 14.72 ± 7.95 in the non-obese group, p = 0.711) and fatty food preference (16.81 ± 8.84 vs. 17.27 ± 8.75; p = 0.833). Additionally, the study did not find any significant correlation between FTO rs9939609 (A/T) polymorphism and sweet and fatty food preferences in the fully adjusted models (p > 0.05). Therefore, the results of this study do not support the hypothesis of different food preferences.

Abstract Background This study aims to investigate the association between dietary insulin index (DII) and load (DIL) with cardiometabolic risk factors and the risk of developing metabolic syndrome (MetS) among patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among 500 T2DM patients. Dietary intake was assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire, and DII and DIL were calculated based on insulin response and energy content. Logistic regression analyses were performed to determine the odds ratios (ORs) for MetS. Results Participants in the highest quartile of DIL had significantly higher odds of MetS (OR: 2.16; 95% CI: 1.02–4.25, P = 0.039) and hyperglycemia (OR: 1.69; 95% CI: 1.08–4.96, P = 0.032). We also discovered that patients in the highest quartile of DII had higher odds of MetS (OR: 1.69; 95% CI: 1.08–4.96, P = 0.034) and hyperglycemia (OR: 1.39; 95% CI: 1.04–4.12, P = 0.019). Furthermore, participants in the highest quartile of DIL (OR: 1.64; 95% CI: 1.00-2.59, P = 0.03) and DII (OR: 1.42; 95% CI: 1.05–1.95, P = 0.026) had higher odds of high waist circumference. When it came to hypertriglyceridemia, we found a significant association between DII and DIL only in the crude model, not the fully adjusted model. However, we didn’t observe any significant association between DII and DIL with hypercholesteremia, Low HDL, and high blood pressure (P > 0.05). Conclusion Our study provides evidence suggesting that a higher DII and DIL may be associated with an increased risk of cardiometabolic risk factors and MetS in patients with T2DM.

This review article discusses the epigenetic regulation of quiescent stem cells. Quiescent stem cells are a rare population of stem cells that remain in a state of cell cycle arrest until activated to proliferate and differentiate. The molecular signature of quiescent stem cells is characterized by unique epigenetic modifications, including histone modifications and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) methylation. These modifications play critical roles in regulating stem cell behavior, including maintenance of quiescence, proliferation, and differentiation. The article specifically focuses on the role of histone modifications and DNA methylation in quiescent stem cells, and how these modifications can be dynamically regulated by environmental cues. The future perspectives of quiescent stem cell research are also discussed, including their potential for tissue repair and regeneration, their role in aging and age-related diseases, and their implications for cancer research. Overall, this review provides a comprehensive overview of the epigenetic regulation of quiescent stem cells and highlights the potential of this research for the development of new therapies in regenerative medicine, aging research, and cancer biology.

Key Clinical Message This case report illustrates that in vitro fertilization (IVF) may be a potential risk factor for pregnancy‐associated osteoporosis (PAO), highlighting the need for awareness and monitoring of bone health in women undergoing IVF treatments. PAO is a rare disease resulting from an imbalance of calcium in the body during pregnancy and lactation and presenting with fragility fractures. PAO occurs in late pregnancy or early postpartum period. A 28‐year‐old woman who conceived through IVF experienced severe back pain 2 days after delivery. Magnetic resonance imaging of the spine showed wedge‐shaped fractures of T9‐T12 vertebrae. Bone mineral density (BMD) was low on dual‐energy x‐ray absorptiometry. The laboratory tests were within the normal range. Based on the clinical manifestations, osteoporotic spine fracture, results of BMD, and exclusion of other causes of osteoporosis, the patient was diagnosed with PAO. Considering the deleterious effect of treatment with gonadotropin‐releasing hormone and repeated superovulation on bone, we hypothesized that IVF may be an etiological factor for PAO.

Glycerol dry reforming presents an intriguing approach for converting CO2, a greenhouse gas, and glycerol, a renewable resource, into syngas. This study delves into the impact of introducing 5 wt% of ZrO2, CeO2, La2O3, and Y2O3 to the Al2O3 support. Additionally, the study examines the influence of the optimal metal oxide ratio within the support formula on both structural properties and catalytic performance in the glycerol dry reforming process. To investigate these aspects, various catalyst supports were synthesized using a mechanochemical method. Subsequently, nickel-based catalysts were prepared through a wet impregnation technique. The catalysts underwent comprehensive characterization employing techniques such as XRD, BET, H2-TPR, CO2-TPD, TPO, and FESEM analyses to determine their physicochemical properties. The results demonstrated that the sample enhanced with 5 wt% ZrO2 exhibited remarkable performance metrics. Notably, it achieved a catalytic activity of 85.4% glycerol conversion at 650 ℃, while also displaying better stability and resistance to carbon deposition compared to the unpromoted catalyst throughout a 600 minutes reaction period. These enhanced attributes were attributed to the heightened specific surface area of the support (241.95 m2/gr), the effective dispersion of Ni on the support and the increase in basic sites.

Wood is a main material in the construction of musical instruments and speaker boxes, especially in developed countries. This study investigated the changes in acoustic properties of pine wood during the processes of fermentation, water washing, and organic washing solvent. The results indicated that both methods of water washing and ethanol-acetone mixture washing of the samples improved the values of density, modulus of elasticity, elastic stiffness, acoustic coefficient, vibration damping, and acoustic conversion efficiency. The effect of ethanol-acetone mixture washing was greater than water washing the samples. Additionally, results revealed that pretreatment before ethanol-acetone mixture washing had the most effect on vibration damping and acoustic conversion efficiency values. In general, the values obtained from ethanol-acetone mixture washing resulted in more improvement in acoustic properties compared to water washing, but the results showed that the pretreatment before water washing had a greater effect on the values of density, modulus of elasticity, elastic stiffness, and acoustic coefficient.

Abstract Background This study was designed to evaluate the association between dietary total antioxidant capacity and clinical and biochemical variables in patients with osteoarthritis. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted among 160 patients with mild-to-moderate knee osteoarthritis. The Likert version of the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC Index) was used to assess the severity of clinical symptoms in patients with knee osteoarthritis. The secondary outcomes included inflammatory and oxidative stress biomarkers. The participants' usual diets were assessed using a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ), and the dietary total antioxidant capacity (TAC) was calculated based on the ferric reducing antioxidant power method. Additionally, clinical and biochemical variables were evaluated using standard methods. Results The mean age of the participants was 57.2 ± 8.1 years, and 55.6% of them were females. The dietary TAC scores in this study ranged from 3.67 to 24.72, with a mean of 12.05 ± 5.3. We found a significant inverse trend between the dietary TAC score and the total Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis (WOMAC) score (P = 0.001), as well as the WOMAC stiffness (P = 0.008) and WOMAC physical function scores (P = 0.001). Abstract River run-off has long been regarded as the largest source of organic-rich suspended particulate matter (SPM) in the Great Barrier Reef (GBR), contributing to high turbidity, pollutant exposure and increasing vulnerability of coral reef to climate change. However, the terrestrial versus marine origin of the SPM in the GBR is uncertain. Here we provide multiple lines of evidence (13C NMR, isotopic and genetic fingerprints) to unravel that a considerable proportion of the terrestrially-derived SPM is degraded in the riverine and estuarine mixing zones before it is transported further offshore. The fingerprints of SPM in the marine environment were completely different from those of terrestrial origin but more consistent with that formed by marine phytoplankton. This result indicates that the SPM in the GBR may not have terrestrial origin but produced locally in the marine environment, which has significant implications on developing better-targeted management practices for improving water quality in the GBR.
