Climatic signals were extracted from ring-width chronologies of Scots pines (Pinus sylvestris L.) from natural stands of the northern, middle, and southern parts of the boreal forest belt in Finland. The strength of the common growth signals (forcing factors) were quantified as a function of time. This was achieved by mean inter-series correlations, calculated over a moving 30-year window, both within and between the regional chronologies. Strong regional signals and also evidence for common forcings were found, especially between northern and central, central and eastern, as well as central/eastern and southern chronologies. Response function analyses revealed that growing season temperatures govern the growth rates of northern pines, while towards south, pine growth becomes less affected by temperatures, and more affected by e.g. precipitation. During some periods, growing conditions seem to have been favorable in the south, while they have been unfavorable in the north (growth inversions). Going from the north to the south, the variability of radial growth clearly decreases, and the variance of ring-width series becomes smaller. Growth variability in the four regions was compared during the common interval of the chronologies, from 1806 to 1991. The spectral densities of the northern, central, eastern and southern chronologies were also compared as functions of frequency, viz. cycles per year. The variance is much greater and there is more periodic behavior in the north than in the south in high, medium, as well as lower frequencies.

The El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is a pacemaker of global climate, and the accurate prediction of future climate change requires an understanding of the ENSO variability. Recently, much-debated aspects of the ENSO have included its long-term past and future changes and its associations with the North Atlantic and European sectors, potentially in interaction with the North Atlantic Oscillation and the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation. Here we present the first European dendroclimatic precipitation reconstruction that extends through the alternating climate phases of the Medieval Climate Anomaly and the Little Ice Age. We show that northern Europe underwent a severe precipitation deficit during the Medieval Climate Anomaly, which was synchronous with droughts in various ENSO-sensitive regions worldwide, while the subsequent centuries during the Little Ice Age were markedly wetter. We attribute this drought primarily to an interaction between the ENSO and the North Atlantic Oscillation, and to a lesser (or negligible) degree to an interaction between the ENSO and the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation. This paper reviews the development of the current 'supra-long' pine chronology for northern Finnish Lapland. In the forest-tundra ecotone region of northern Finnish Lapland over 250 samples from living Scots pines (Pinus sylvestris L.) and over 1700 samples of subfossil pines have been collected for dendrochronological studies. In addition, over 1400 subfossils have been sampled from the forested area of Finnish Lapland. The goal of the research was to build a more than 7000-year long continuous pine ring-width chronology. The construction of the chronology is now completed. The intensive phase of the data collection and chronology building lasted about 10 years, 1989 to 1999. The major part of the Finnish Lapland master curve was constructed several years ago, but it was extremely difficult to bridge the c. 300-year gap, prior to 165 BC between the 'absolute' younger part of the chronology and the 'floating' older part. The crucial samples were identified and assembled in the chronology in early 1999, and there is now an unbroken pine chronology about 7500 years long constructed from the subfossil forest-limit pines of northern Finnish Lapland. The severe growth depression centred on 330 BC is likely to have been caused by increased wetness. A brief summary is presented of inferred tree-line changes from the location of the samples. Midsummer (July) temperatures are reconstructed for the last 7500 years using the long ring-width chronology of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) from northern Finland. The chronology was built using regional curve standardization (RCS), which allows for long-term (low-frequency) variability to be extracted from this annually resolved record of 1087 samples from living trees and subfossil timber. Short- and long-term changes in reconstructed July temperatures are presented. The regression model accounts for 37% of the dependent instrumental temperature variance between AD 1879 and 1992. The warmest 30-year periods were AD 560-531, AD 560-531, 1190-1161 BC and AD 1541-1570, and the coldest 5240-5211, 5150-5121 and 3710-3681 BC. The warmest 100-year periods were AD 1501-1600, 600-501 BC and 300-201 BC, and the coldest 5200-5101, 2500-2401 and 1500-1401 BC. Growth of subarctic Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) trees was investigated by a combination of process-based models and dendroecological approaches. Tree ring width indices were strongly autocorrelated and correlated with simulated photosynthetic production of the previous year and with organic matter N mineralization of the current year. An autoregressive model, with photosynthesis and N mineralization as external inputs, explained growth of the trees well. However, relationships for the period 1950-1992 differed significantly from relationships for the period 1876-1949; the slope of the regression of tree ring width index and photosynthesis was lower for the 1950-1992 period. Also, the autocorrelation structure of the data changed. First-order autocorrelation decreased and second-order autocorrelation increased from the earlier to the later period. This means that growth is becoming less sensitive to variations in photosynthetic production, whereas the relationships between growth and N mineralization are remaining fairly constant. We postulate that, although photosynthesis has increased in response to increasing CO2 concentrations, tree growth rate cannot parallel the increase in photosynthesis because potential growth rate is limited directly by temperature.
