There have been reports of the transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) from humans to various mammalian species. Some infected animals show clinical signs and may even die in rare cases. Outbreaks of SARS-CoV-2 have been reported in zoos where susceptible animals are bred in high population densities. However, there have been few reports of omicron variant outbreaks in zoo animals. From late 2022 to 2023, an outbreak of the SARS-CoV-2 omicron variant occurred in one Japanese zoo. A total of 24 lions were housed in the zoo; 13 of them showed respiratory symptoms, and the three oldest lions died. Molecular and histopathological analyses revealed that the deceased lions were infected with SARS-CoV-2 omicron BF.7.15. Virus-neutralization tests showed that all 21 lions were positive for antibodies against the omicron variant, but not against the delta variant. In addition, three tigers and one bear in the same or neighboring building as the lions possessed antibodies against the omicron variant. This is a very rare report on the outbreak of a SARS-CoV-2 omicron variant infection that resulted in the death of animals. This finding demonstrates the importance of continuous countermeasures to protect non-vaccinated animals from SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Abstract Marine mammals possess a specific subcutaneous fat layer called blubber that not only insulates and stores energy but also secretes bioactive substances. However, our understanding of its role as a secretory organ in cetaceans is incomplete. To exhaustively explore the hormone-like substances produced in dolphin subcutaneous adipose tissue, we performed seasonal blubber biopsies from captive female common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus; N = 8, n = 32) and analyzed gene expression via transcriptomics. Analysis of 186 hormone-like substances revealed the expression of 58 substances involved in regulating energy metabolism, tissue growth/differentiation, vascular regulation, immunity, and ion/mineral homeostasis. Adiponectin was the most abundantly expressed gene, followed by angiopoietin protein like 4 and insulin-like growth factor 2. To investigate the endocrine/secretory responses of subcutaneous adipose tissue to the surrounding temperature, we subsequently compared the mean expression levels of the genes during the colder and warmer seasons. In the colder season, molecules associated with appetite suppression, vasodilation, and tissue proliferation were relatively highly expressed. In contrast, warmer seasons enhanced the expression of substances involved in tissue remodeling, immunity, metabolism, and vasoconstriction. These findings suggest that dolphin blubber may function as an active secretory organ involved in the regulation of metabolism, appetite, and tissue reorganization in response to changes in the surrounding environment, providing a basis for elucidating the function of hormone-like substances in group-specific evolved subcutaneous adipose tissue.

Herein, we describe the management of nasopharyngitis caused by Schizophyllum commune infection in a captive cheetah. Computed tomography revealed a nodule in the nasal cavity and pharynx, and an endoscopic biopsy was performed. As a result, the nodule was surgically resected because of a suspected carcinoma. However, the surgical specimen was histologically re-evaluated and a fungal granuloma was diagnosed. Sequence analysis of DNA from formalinfixed, paraffin-embedded samples revealed S. commune infection. The cheetah was administered fluconazole orally for 73 days. However, the drug was ineffective and itraconazole was administered for 14 days. Symptoms such as nasal discharge and sneezing have completely resolved for 4 years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A white, lobular mass was found in the right ovary of a pregnant Risso's dolphin (Grampus griseus) at necropsy. The mass was unilateral and occupied most of the pre-existing ovarian tissue. Histologically, the mass was composed of diffuse sheets of polyhedral cells with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm and oval nuclei, separated by fibrous connective tissue. Only a few ovarian follicles were observed at the periphery of the mass. Immunohistochemically, the large eosinophilic cells were positive for vimentin and negative for pan-cytokeratins. Based on the histopathological features, the present case was diagnosed as luteoma. In human medicine, luteoma of pregnancy, a tumor-like proliferative lesion occurring in pregnant women, is well described. In veterinary medicine, luteoma associated with pregnancy has never been described. The present study would provide useful information for understanding the characteristics of luteoma in animals. The article presents a study which reports on the hispathological examination of a female sea otter that exhibited symptoms such as convulsions, arrhythmia and hyperthemia, dying a week after. Findings included neoplastic proliferation of small round cells with scant cytoplasm in the thalamus, the cerebral parenchyma and perivascular areas and were immunopositive for the cluster of differentiation 3 (CD3) T-cell protein. This is the first case of primary cerebral T-cell lymphoma in sea otter.
